As I said above, everything went very very well. I can't believe that the prices were so good, the service so immediate, and the windows installed so well. This is definitely a good way to go, and the prices and quality are hard to beat. Hope helps! Good luck.
Description of Work: Dan installed for me 18 replacement windows, 16 double hung and two picture windows--all the windows were capped with aluminum siding. The old windows were single pane wood, rotting, putty coming off, some panes cracked, impossible to clean since no tilt etc. and I'm on two floors. It was time! Holy heavens! The new windows are absolutely lovely! And the whole process of getting them was such a relief and a surprise: it was courteous, smooth, and completely upfront on pricing. I recommend Dan's service with no reservations at all. Simply fantastic. I came across Dan because he runs a window review site, called Windowdog.com, where he had reviewed many windows, one of which sounded spot on to me (Revere Berkshire Elite windows). I had been hunting windows for a while--had looked at Sunrise (who sent a salesman) and some Simenton windows (which my own contractor friend would have installed). I'd poked about Home Depot and Lowes, and all over the web as well, reading comparisons, and what people paid and all the rest. The Sunrise quoted me $13000, (charging for everything, including taking down the blinds, which are just clipped on!), They put on the hard sell, and after we balked, they called back offering to take another $1000 off the price etc.). We liked their windows but not their tactics or prices. Anyway, I read the review of the Berkshire Elite and liked the sound of them. They have thin vinyl frames, (unlike the siminton which, though also at at a decent price (though no capping) are really very bulky--the frames are much fatter than the wood I was replacing). These Berkshire Elite are thin, let in more light, they are energy star, and they use a good balance mechanism (not the the coil and spring, which in my old wood windows had worn out completely). Anyway, I had become obsessed with looking up various windows, and these sounded perfect, well-rated, mid-range affordable window. I looked for them in Alabama, but I couldn't find them. I called Alside corporate office, but the place they recommended in Alabama didn't have them. Finally, I wrote a message on Dan's site asking if he knew where I could find them. He messaged me privately the next day, that he could arrange it for me. He works for Window Universe in Virginia and could order the windows to the Window Universe in Birmingham. He emailed me with a quote. It was a plain quote sheet with prices clearly listed and the cost for any adjustments if you picked upgrades (extra energy radiant barriers etc.). The install price was broken out separately. There was no gimmick. I was a bit nervous not having seen the windows, but he said they were very similar to the Alside Mezzo (but with the better balance system) and he arranged for me to see these Mezzo in a place in Birmingham. My wife and I went and liked them. I used the basic argon, ecoating energy star package which comes standard. I emailed Dan in mid-December, got the quote a day later. I had some questions that Dan promptly answered on email. He had one of the seasoned installers install them from Brimingham. Ricky, the installer, came within two days to take measurements. They took about two-three weeks to make the windows in Pennsylvania somewhere and ship them south. Then Ricky, put them in over a couple of days in January. One picture window upstairs was mismeasured, but Ricky quickly ordered its replacement and installed it (two weeks later--they had to make it over). The install went just fine. Ricky worked well, replaced and caulked two rotted sills (at no extra cost). And put very elegant capping on all the windows. Really. The capping is not as bulky as I've seen, fits neatly with only the corner seams caulked. No more painting! Overall, I highly valued the upfront pricing and low pressure. I can't say enough about how smooth, friendly, courteous, and direct this whole process has been. My wife and I simply love the new windows. I was prepared, from what I had read on the web to spend almost double what we did. Final note, the argon or ecoating has a slightly greenish tint, but from the inside you cannot at all tell. It is perfectly clear, and bright, much clearer than our single panes, partly because they were a bit grimy upstairs, but also partly because they had full screens. These have nice half screens which can be slid either up or down. The screen is also very well made (the seam part is on the inside, so fully flush on the outside. We got Colonial grids too. And both up and down slide, and tilt in for cleaning.
