They were great - they arrived on time, and thoroughly assessed both the furnace and fireplace chimneys. Gave us different options to choose from, and answered all my questions with regard to safety. Work was performed on time, and done in a way that kept our house clean (drop cloths and booties). Price was right on, so we were very satisfied.
Description of Work: They fixed a cracked crown on the chimney, painted the chimney hip to prevent water leakage, painted the furnace cap with rustoleum and fitted a new internal furnace pipe that allows it to go from five inches in diameter, to four inches.

It went great. The workers were polite, personable and seemed to know what they were doing. They also were very thorough and spent more than twice as much time as the previous chimney sweeps. I hope they now consider me a regular customer!

Workers arrived on time, were professional and pleasant. Set up tarps/sheets and got to work, finished quickly. I took before and after photos of my chimney and flue out of my own curiosity. They were thorough in spite of the quick service. That's called efficiency. I'd use them again, but might consider some price shopping first to make me feel better about the cost.
Description of Work: Simple chimney sweep and inspection. My landlord had previously used Rooftop, so I adopted them after buying a home. This was the second time they have come out to my house two years. They've been great to work with, professional, punctual, very clean. I was surprised at the price tag this last time around, had not remembered it being quite that pricey. I'm sure there are lower costs out there (I may shop around a bit next time), but I definitely trust Rooftop's work. That's worth something.

They came and did what I contracted them to do. It was a very old insert and they were very careful in putting down protectors on my carpet. They did what they were supposed to do.
Description of Work: He cleaned and inspected the chimney; they also removed a wood burning insert and hauled it away. They then recommended another company who came out and installed the gas insert.

He was excellent. My outlook file even says "good guy." He is totally honest, which is incredibly rare in that business. I would say, he is honest, ethical and reliable. I would say again that that is very very rare in that business. I would give him all "A's" across the board. You have to book him way in advance, as you are not going to get him at a two-day notice.

I like the company a lot. The owner's son did the work - he was very professional, educated, and nice. We elected not to do the additional work simply bc of price. They quote to repair the chimney was around $3,000

Rooftop Chimney Sweeps were very professional. The staff member who made my appointment was very pleasant and easy to work with. She explained the services they could provide and the costs up front. On the day of my appointment 2 chimney sweeps arrived right on time. They covered their shoes when they entered the house. They also covered the carpet and furniture near the fireplace. They did an inspection of the fireplace and told me I did need a sweep, but overall the tiles in the fireplace were in good shape and the chimney did not require any other services. They cleaned up when they were finished. I will use Rooftop Chimney Sweeps the next time I need my chimney cleaned.

They were great from beginning to end and I plan to use them in the future.
Description of Work: I have two fireplaces and was experiencing smoke in the basement when using the one in the living room. Rooftop arrived on time, put down clean sheets before they started work and inspected the chimney and both fireplaces. The found that the downstairs fireplace did not need to be cleaned, but the upstairs one did. They also discovered the problem that caused the smoke in the basement, that the downstairs fireplace flue is exposed in the upstairs fireplace smoke chamber, which is not up to code. Andy sent me a detailed quote for the repair work the next day. The cost of the repair will be $1,700, so I plan to have Rooftop do the work over the summer.

They came right on time and took care to protect my furnishings and rugs as they worked. The work was completed in a reasonable amount of time, and an extra service was explained and costed out for my approval before they did the work. My only negative comment is that they don't take credit cards, just checks. Luckily I had enough funds in my checking account to cover the bill.

They laid down white sheets that kept my house completely clean. They also brought in an industrial vacuum cleaner to eliminate the potential of dust from the sweep infiltrating my house. They explained every step in the process and their findings. I found the process informative and helpful.
Description of Work: They inspected my chimney, swept the chimney, and then used a camera to take pictures at every seam in the chimney. They then emailed me the pictures for my future reference, along with an estimate should I choose to have the work performed at this time.

Not much of a story to tell; they answered the phone, scheduled the service at my convenience, showed up on time, did the job in under an hour, and left the place as clean as when they arrived (and I have a white carpet). Save yourself $99 and a lot of frustration. Call Priddy Clean instead. Their estimate was free, they gave it to me immediately after inspection, it was much lower and the difference in customer service was like night and day.
Description of Work: I paid $99 for them to come out and give me an estimate for putting in a chimney liner. Initially, the guy Andy on the phone was pleasant and 2 guys came on time to look at the chimney. I paid $99 for an estimate but it was like pulling teeth trying to get the estimate from them. First they said they would send it to me in the mail but it never came so I started calling the office. I called numerous times trying to get the estimate. The older woman who answers the phone was the opposite of customer friendly. Every time I called she acted like she had no idea who I was so I had to explain myself repeatedly. She wouldn't put me through to anyone else and when I tried to pin her down on when I would actually get the estimate she became defensive and rude and acted like I was asking for something unreasonable. I eventually reached Andy and he was apologetic for the delay and agreed to email me an estimate and said he wanted to make up for the delay somehow. Hollow words. He emailed the estimate--it was very high and included a lot of things I told the estimators I was not going to do (to a second chimney). Andy said to call him directly to discuss the estimate which I tried to do but he never answered or returned my messages. When I tried reaching him through the office the woman would say he had just left or wasn't there. Requests for him to return my call were ignored (or never passed on). They really didn't seem to want the business. Dealing with them was aggravating. I would have given up sooner if I hadn't already paid them $99. I expected more professional follow-through after they took my money.

The Rooftop crew arrived as scheduled and got right to work. I had used Rooftop before for many years for basic inspection and repair, so I was confident their work would be top-notch. This is a family business, so the crew chiefs are Ray's sons, a brother, and others. All seem very professional and knowledgeable about the work of fireplaces, chimneys, and flues. They were careful about protecting floors and furniture inside the house; they explained what steps they were taking and why. When an unexpected problem was encountered (See "Part 3" above), they and/or Andrew fully explained what had come up, what the pros and cons were, and offered options for doing the work. In addition, Dylan fully checked out aspects of the flues that weren't planned for work: A separate "insert" fireplace, as well as the exhausting of the new furnaces. On the latter he suggested the setup might lead to a carbon monoxide hazard and recommended I have my HVAC company check it for me (which I did). Changes were accommodated quickly; the new flue liner (Part 3) had to be obtained on short notice but nevertheless arrived fast enough to be installed the same day. The job had originally been planned for one day with a possible need to extend a few hours into a second day; I was not surprised that the complications that were found required more time, but everything was finished anyway by the end of the second day. (The waterproofing treatment on the crown, because the new concrete needed to cure for a while, was done about a week later but did not require me to be at home.) Overall, I was very pleased with the quality of the work, the professionalism of everyone I dealt with, the price, and the complete, thorough explanations I received.
Description of Work: As the total price indicates, I had fairly major work done, in three parts: Part One was repair to the exterior of the chimney, and (from my perspective) essential to prevent further deterioration. Based on an inspection/cleaning done earlier (and not separately reported here on Angie's List), Rooftop Chimney Sweeps (RCS) had determined that the crown atop my chimney was loose and breaking up, allowing water to get in underneath it. The company redid the crown (and ultimately the base below it, which was also deteriorating), replaced two raincaps, and waterproofed. The total for this part of the job was $1335. Part Two was more an option, as firm owner Andrew Raycroft made clear to me on the phone. This part of the work was the most expensive, at nearly $4,000, accounting for two-thirds of the total job. Overall, however, I concluded it would improve and preserve the interior of my chimney, so I chose to go ahead with it now. This part included removing the old cast iron damper to provide access to the smoke chamber; parging the chamber; applying a "Heat Shield" repair coating to the entire flue; and installing a new top-mounted damper cap. Part Three developed during the job and was also, I thought, essential. While working on the exterior of the chimney they found that the masonry inside the flue that exhausts my hot water heater was very damp and in danger of deterioration. That, they said, was probably because after installation of a new furnace (that vents horizontally rather than vertically), the flue which had originally been sized to accommodate both the furnaces and the water heater, was too large to carry just the exhaust from the hot water heater; exhausted gases cooled before escaping all the way up and out, leaving moisture behind in the flue. [I checked this with my HVAC service, who confirmed that this can/does often occur in this circumstance.] Andrew offered two solutions for the problem; I chose to have him install a stainless flue liner running directly from the hot water heater up through the old flue to the outside. Cost of this final part was about $1150.

The experience went well. They were on time and performed the work expected. They were very professional. They cleaned and checked the two fireplaces in our home. Rooftop came and looked and said they saw no evidence of any obvious leak, thought it was a freak storm (it has never occurred since) and recommended not doing anything. They were ready to leave with no charge, but i asked if they would do a routine cleaning which they did cleanly and efficiently. they also recommended a wood delivery service (Miller Firewood, Clinton, MD) which I used and also found to give great service and very good, dry and reasonably priced wood.

Arrived on time for appointments for estimate and repair work. Repair work was required for sale of the house. Repair crew was not given the proper bricks to match against existing chimney bricks but they offered to get the bricks and also proposed a reasonable alternate solution using the existing bricks that I went with and I'm happy with the results. Consequently, the final cost of the chimney repair was lower than originally estimated.
Description of Work: Replaced chimney crown and installed 4" s.s. flue liner in HVAC 7" flue duct.
