Everything went fine and I would recommend them to any body that would ask me. I've used them for several years and have been very happy with the service.
Description of Work: They did the annual inspection and a cleaning as well. Since I didn't actually need a cleaning they didn't charge me for that though.

This is the second time I've used these guys. When I first moved into my house 2 years ago, I had them inspect my chimney. This year, I had them inspect and sweep the chimney and then clean my dryer vents. I made the appointment several months in advance and was happy to receive a confirmation call the night before. Tom and his young assistant Andy (I believe) came promptly between the time quoted to me. They worked as quietly as possible and were considerate that I was working from home. They kept booties on, put drop cloths down, and vacuumed up any mess so that my house stayed clean. Work took approximately two hours and these guys worked diligently. Besides sending out clean and diligent workers, I like this company because I think they are honest and don't suggest work that doesn't need to be done. They aren't looking to increase the billed amount just to make a buck- seems like that is harder to come by these days. Otherwise, I think their rates are fairly consistent with what I've seen. I'll be using these guys again, when it's time to have this necessary service performed.

We are purchasing a home and wanted a chimney inspection primarily to check for earthquake damage. These guys get all the points for responsiveness. We had booked a chimney inspection with another company and when we called that morning to get a better idea for when they would arrive, they had no appointment scheduled for us (although the receptionist remembered me calling to make it). My realtor called around to see who could inspect on short notice and these guys said they'd be there in 30 minutes! Two men promptly showed up. They ran the camera up from the bottom, recording what they saw on an ipad. Then they climbed on the roof and took some pictures from the top down. We were very pleased with the work. The only issue was a misunderstanding with the cost. We were quoted $149 for a camera inspection on the phone, and also on the appointment notice emailed to us from the office. After the work was done we were told a camera inspection costs $299. The level I vs level II inspection specifics were not explained to us when we made the appointment. All we knew was that we wanted a camera inspection. The man was very nice about it and did not accept payment right away. He told us to settle it with the office. As of right now we are still waiting to hear back from them.

The service was EXCELLENT. The team arrived on time, were very professional and friendly, knowledgeable about their services and EXTREMELY clean - they wore foot coverings in the house every time, no exceptions. At the end of the appointment, the tech gave me the overall assessment with recommendation for future work to prepare for installation of a gas fireplace but no pressure or salespitch for more work. I was very pleased with the service and would highly recommend them.

From the beginning to end the experience was EXTRAORDINARY. The owner did the estimate and conveyed information that was helpful and accurate -- he's a real expert on chimney repair. I appreciated that unlike others that provided estimates he did not try and "upsell". The repair team -- headed by Perry -- was punctual and professional. They keep me appraised of each step, they cleaned up as they went along and they were mindful to keep the yard gate closed so the dogs could watch but not go for a run. I highly recoomend Rooftop Chimney.

Rooftop Chimney Sweep folks have always showed up within pretty narrow expected time windows, and have worked straight through whatever the job was with no dawdling or unexplained absences. The only postponement I've had was them waiting for a custom fabrication to be completed by a third party. Costs have been clear and as agreed. Beware of one thing: they have a double-tier pricing system for inspections, which makes a ton of sense because it saves money for folks who don't need the higher-priced inspection -- but the way they advertise it I imagine people could feel blindsided if it turns out you really need a higher-level inspection, which is more than the base price. So if they arrive and find out that the stick-their-head-up-the-chimney plan will not be sufficient, than you might feel like you've just been subjected to bait-and-switch tactics. But they consult with you before they proceed. The one other note is, they do a good job of putting down paper, masking off the fireplace area, wearing shoe booties so they don't track soot, and vacuuming up -- but in my experience you will still need to clean after them, so expect that. Very fine soot escapes into the room and will leave some very fine black dust that's visible on, say, a white mantel, mostly just in the area right around where they work, say a six to ten foot radius.
Description of Work: I am the property manager of a church with an urban campus in D.C. We have five chimneys serving four fireplaces, a boiler, a furnace, and two hot water heaters. We have used these guys for service for a couple of years now, and I also use them at home (MD) where I have one fireplace and a hot water heater flue. They are very professional, straight-talking, efficient, and know their stuff. Service time will vary with season: all sweeps get busy in autumn. I have used them for routine cleaning and inspections, re-pointing and re-tiling chimney tops, and installing standard and custom caps. They have all the expected capabilities and skills including remote-camera inspection setups.

They not only discovered and diagnosed the problem quickly, they consulted with us on the solution. Additionally, their work was outstanding. They performed everything quickly and efficiently, cleaned up everything behind them, and informed us that the condo association would cover the cost (which is why we don't know how much it cost). Outstanding service! Compare this with the first company we used, Complete Chimney & Fireplace of some unknown location in Virginia (absolutely no brick-and-mortar address on their card, their website, or their forms---only "Dan" and a phone number (and a PO Box). They did a perfectly adequate job replacing the fireplace box tiles, and they also did a largely adequate job replacing our surround, except for the bad collective decision (between "Dan" and his helper and the two of us) to not make the bottom piece of granite long enough. -- This is work that they can do, but it's not their specialty, clearly. They also didn't give us half the advice that Mr. Raycroft did, and they never went on the roof to notice that the cap over our chimney was both smashed in--and the wrong cap. "Dan" and his guy were also nice enough, they got two jobs done for us, and they also cleaned up after themselves, but we just can't figure out how they got the highest ratings on Angie's List. Complete Chimney & Fireplace is a good hire if you already know all you need to know about chimneys, mantels, and surrounds, and you simply want to hire a company to carry out the specific instructions that you provide. Rooftop Chimney Sweeps, Ltd., is for the rest of us, IMHO.
Description of Work: Rooftop Chimney Sweeps, Ltd.'s Thomas Raycroft was contracted by our condominium property management to do inspections of our fireplaces and chimneys. Their staff was exceptionally professional, took the time to talk with us about the trouble we were having with our fireplace, and conducted a full sweep, cleaning, and inspection of the entire chimney to determine the problem.

They were excellent. I really liked that they seemed very thorough. They took pictures and showed us what was wrong instead of just taking our word for it because we had a lot of work done. We've had $2000 worth of work that on that chimney previously. They really knew what they were doing. We were very pleased with that. It was competitive. It was no more or less than anyone else in the area we had in.
Description of Work: We used Rooftop Chimney Sweeps. They came twice. These guys found issues that had been done with the previous company. They seemed to fix things. We had repairs done as well. We had to have part of the chimney flue rebuilt.

I have used Rooftop Chimney Sweeps for over 10 years. In addition to cleaning my chimney each year, they have repaired my Buck woodstove. I have been very happy with the services provided by Rooftop Chimney Sweeps. In addition to being courteous and friendly, they are always punctual; explain everything; and note when additional work is recommended without a hard sell. They are also very neat, and take care to cover areas near the fireplace/woodstove with drop cloths to protect the floor and carpeting. I highly recommend Rooftop Chimney Sweeps.

This was the second time we used Rooftop Chimney sweeps, and we're as delighted this time as we were last time. Aside from the fact that these guys detected major problems with the chimney of a house we bought and did a bang up job of fixing it, they left the house in impeccable condition AND the crew was made up of just about the nicest guys EVER. They're friendly, helpful, and very respectful of the property where they're working. Andy responded to multiple phone calls I made with questions, he followed up every time, was able to explain what needed doing and why in a way I understood clearly. Can't say enough good things about these guys!! Rooftop Chimney Sweeps rule.

We had a carbon monoxide issue in our basement where our gas furnace and gas water heater are located in an enclosed space. RCS came out to inspect our chimney for blockage and do a sweep for any debris. This cost approximately $200 with a 10% Angie's List discount. RCS also determined that our current chimney liner size was 3x larger than necessary and recommended a stainless steel chimney liner to help with venting. The owner Andy was very thorough in explaining to me over the phone exactly what this process entailed. Initially, we were going to have to wait a week for installation, but there was a last minute opening and we were able to schedule the installation within a few days. The actual installation went well, it only took 5 hours rather than the estimated 8 hours. However, we were still charged the entire 8 hours of labor. I asked the technician about that and he told me that it was a standard billing policy for them to charge for the entire time. Pros: Thorough, used shoe covers and sheets to protect furniture and floors. Cons: Does not accept credit card, charges for labor hours not actually used. Bottom line: No more carbon monoxide issues, stainless steel liner solved the backdrafting problem.

I was referred to Rooftop Chimney Sweeps by Woodburners Two for chimney cleaning and fireplace repair services. I called their telephone number and left over a dozen messages over several months leaving a brief description of what I needed and asked for a call back, but received none. Adding insult to injury, after no returned telephone calls, I started receiving their post cards in the mail advertising their services. I called that number as well, but again received no returned calls.

We regret to hear about his frustrations and are happy that he was so determined to use our services. Upon hearing this we scoured our records in order to contact him and rectify the issue. We keep complete records of every phone message that we have, and have gone over our entire record for the past 6 months in an attempt to find him and locate where the line of communication was lost. We were unable to find even a single message from anyone by that name or address, and have no record of every having scheduled anything under his name or address. If he was recommended to us by Woodburners, it is possible that he was accidentally given an incorrect phone number, or that we were confused for another company by the recommender. We still look forward to providing him with our top quality services, and and nvite him to contact us at 703 836 7858, or by email, at info@rooftopchimneysweeps.com, where we will be happy to work with him to get to the bottom of this, and to get him into our schedule as soon as possible.

Smoothly! In spite of terrible weather they were right on time and very upfront about the need for the work to be done. Didn't try to upsell/hard-sell the need for the cleaning...and that let me decide if I wanted to get it done as opposed to being pushed into "needing" to having it done. POSITIVE: The company was wonderful to deal with. I got an email confirmation about my appointment and when they had an opening, they called and were able to reschedule about 2 weeks earlier. Cost was what was quoted to me over the phone and the crew came when I was expecting them. The two young men that came to do the work were polite and respectful of my home. I didn't see a single spot of dirt after they left. NEGATIVE: Generally speaking, I am suspicious of companies that come to do work and then tell me I need additional work done. After the chimney sweeping was done, they told me that some work that was done previously inside the chimney was inferior and needed to be repaired. I haven't been able to have someone come and give me a second opinion, so I don't really know if this is a criticism or not.

What a delight it was to work with this group. The scheduler was pleasant and accommodating. The crew was on time, and extremely efficient. We had two chimney's cleaned in a 4 story townhouse. The first went relatively easy. The second was the fireplace most used for over 40 years and evidently the chimney had never been cleaned so it took much longer than expected and was quite a job. The sweep never lost his sense of humor during the entire process, even when huge chunks of soot were falling on him. The camera inspections are quite interesting and all of the defects were explained in layman's terms along with the various fixes available. All in all these folks were just wonderful and seemingly knowledgeable about all things chimney/fireplace related. I would definitely use them again and have already recommended them to several friends.

Response from Rooftop Chimney Sweeps
We have attempted to contact her several times in the past six weeks in order to explain her situation and have been given no response. The reason that the basic cost was so high was that [member's name removed]'s chimney was in such extreme disrepair that to have installed a chimney cap as she originally requested without the further work would have been both pointless and potentially dangerous. [removed member's name] was made aware of this by the technician on site. It should be noted that [member's name removed] originally called us asking for work noting that there was a small sapling growing out of the brick chimney. The brick work at the top of the chimney was loose for several courses and in danger of falling off the chimney. The terra cotta liners did not extend beyond the top of the chimney, so there was no way to affix a cap without adding an extension to the liner. However, the chimney was in such poor condition, that the technician on site was concerned that if he only added a liner section without repairing at least some of the structure, that it might not be strong enough and both the cap and liner extension could be become unattached and could fall off potentially damaging the house or injuring any people below. Again, all of this was explained to [removed member's name] by the technician during the inspection. We recommended that the sapling be removed from the roots, and that the top courses of the chimney be rebuilt with new liner extensions and a new crown (the last of which was nonexistent), for a price of $1146.40. If [removed member's name] were to look for a second opinion, we believe she would find this to be a very competitive price. By not removing the sapling, its continued growth and blowing in the wind risked loosening the chimney further and any cap that we might install. Our further recommendations were to repair the fireplace flue, which had gaps in the terra cotta lining and several broken sections, and to reline the furnace flue, which similarly had no mortar joints between the liner sections. We also recommended a repair to the hearth extension of [removed member's name] fireplace, which was out of standard as it was supported by combustible materials. All of this is a standard recommendation that must be noted by any certified chimney technician lest he or she be liable of professional negligence. The total of these recommendations would have cost $6453.85 At no time was [removed member's name] told that she "had to" do anything. All of our technicians are trained to fully inspect every chimney, note any issues which are out of standard, make recommendations for the relevant repairs using cost effective, high quality solutions. We are sorry that she was disappointed by the cost, but we ask her to keep in mind that our technician did exactly what he is trained to do, and that the pricing of the recommendations is quite competitive, and a reflection poor state of repair of her chimney. We encourage her not to take our word for it and seek out a second opinion if she is disappointed. We also note that she was informed during her inspection that if she were to order the repairs, that the initial inspection fee would have been credited to the repairs along with the 5% discount. We offer a 5% discount as standard when customers buy certain combinations of larger repairs not as a sales incentive but as doing several repairs at once affords us some economy of scale, we simply pass those savings along to our customers. We hope that she understands the reason behind our recommendations and understands that they were just that - recommendations based on professional knowledge and according to industry standards, and that she now better understands the reasoning behind the prices of the work we recommended. If she has any further questions or remarks, we would be happy to discuss them with her at 703 836 7858 or info@rooftopchimneysweeps.com

Great! They said they'd arrive between 8 and 8:30 am. They arrived around 8:15. They put covers on their shoes to protect our floors/carpets. They explained everything they were doing. They did the inspection and said that a cleaning wasn't necessary. They did recommend having the exterior of the chimney clear-coated to seal/protect the bricks. We opted to not do that at this time - the price for that service was $300 and they would have scrubbed the chimney and then coated it.

I have had two encounters with rooftop chimney in the past one month. Their staff is very thorough and at no time did I feel that they were trying to rush through their inspection (they took over an hour to go over various scenarios and reasons for the water leak).T hey are extremely professional, very courteous, and most importantly they do not try to provide you with services you do not need. Their responsiveness to my call has been very impressive at short notice. You can see that this is a family run business and they work to make sure the customer is satisfied with the services provided.
