Rooftop Chimney Sweeps has been our go-to company for any and all work on our chimney for several years now -- following another company that tried to scam us by telling us our chimney was detaching from the house and needed to be torn down and rebuilt. We know this to be a scam as other friends and family have been delivered the same news and we've seen more than one chimney in our area being rebuilt. Chimneys simply don't detach from homes that often. For this reason, we switched to Rooftop Chimney Sweeps after a full diagnosis revealed no serious problems with our chimney structure. Moreover, the previous company supposedly sealed our chimney crown, but within a year the sealant was peeling -- probably nothing more than grey paint. This year we knew we would have to make some repairs to our chimney. Griffen and his crew come in to perform a cleaning and inspection and upon completion of the work he suggested the chimney be relined and the crown replaced/repaired. Griffen used a camera to show us where joints were missing mortar and where some of the ceramic tiles were cracked. Total cost of repairs would be $4,200 (we have a 4' wide fireplace and a correspondingly large smoke chamber and chimney so prices will vary as to size), no small amount. Some research on the internet revealed that water that gets behind the ceramic tiles can freeze and eventually impact the exterior brick structure and for peace of mind we decided to go ahead with the work. Sam and Johnny arrived at our home shortly after 0800 as scheduled and immediately went to work, later being jointed by two additional gentleman to assist. Sam and Johnny did a fantastic job!!! They were very pleasant to work with -- professional, respectful, and personable throughout the day. Nothing short of FANTASTIC! Before doing anything, they moved two large chairs (we had previously removed everything away from the hearth and mantle) and then covered the entire room with drop cloths -- furniture and floor. Even more important -- and this is essential -- they removed our new fireplace door and thoroughly sealed the fireplace so that dust and debris would not come flying out of the fireplace as the old ceramic tiles were mechanically broken apart. Throughout the day, they carefully removed the ceramic tiles, dropped a new stainless steel liner (lifetime warranty) into the chimney, and then installed full insulation around the liner. Upon completing that effort they next repaired our crown, finding two detaching bricks in the process. The two bricks were reset and the crown installed. Once all of the work was completed, everything in the room was returned to order - exactly as it was found. The fireplace door was reattached and when we found that it was slightly off center, Sam and Johnny managed to reset it again to our satisfaction. It looks exactly as it was installed only a few weeks back. The room in which they were working has one wall lined with bookcases, all of which are filled with books. The amount of dust resulting from this work could have been overwhelming, but upon leaving at the end of the day it is as if Sam and Johnny had never been io our home. They did a great job and we would unequivocally use them again. I have read some comments about Griffen's hard sell. We didn't find him trying to sell so much as he recommended what needed to be done. His suggestion to reline the entire chimney was unexpected and homeowners should always do some online research to learn about the "hows" and "whys." This is exactly what we did and it was from our effort that we concluded that with a lifetime warranty on the stainless steel liner and a 15 year warranty on the new crown it made sense to go with peace of mind as we use the fireplace almost every weekend during the cold weather. We didn't rate the cost of the work as we trusted Rooftop Chimney Sweeps and for that reason we did not price shop and have nothing with which to compare their price.

I am very pleased. The need for this work was discovered during the annual inspection and chimney cleaning that I schedule with Rooftop. During the inspection, the inspector, Mynor Maldonado, ran a wireless camera and light up the flue. He showed me the damage using a tablet to display the wireless picture. We discussed the options I had and I was provided a detailed estimate for the work. I scheduled the work for late in the summer. There was a two man crew, Trevor and Johnny. The job took two full days. I would say that about a third of the time was spent by the two men doing preparation and taking precautions not to cause undo damage or dirt in our home. Once they started, they worked carefully and steadily. I like to ask a lot of questions about larger jobs done in my home. Both Trevor and Johnny were very knowledgeable about the job, the properties of the materials they were installing, etc. These are men who know what they're doing and are proud of the quality of work they perform. I have had good experiences with Rooftop Chimney Sweeps over the years and this latest work they performed was the quality I have become accustomed to. I recommend this firm for any work you need performed on fireplaces, chimneys, etc.

They gave us several options on the smoke problem, Try this fix first and then if it does not work we can work on it more rather than spend a lot of money now. While they were working on the chimney they also noticed that the vent Furnace for the looked very bad. We had no idea because no one ever looked at – even all the other chimney cleaners we used! WE had it fixed and once again, very professional and informative. I would recommend them to anyone and will continue to use them in the future.

This was the 3rd chimney sweep that I had out to my home for a Level 2 inspection. The first was outrageous and talked about my insurance paying for the repairs. They were there maybe 1/2 an hour. The second one was there about 15 minutes and was so low in price it was ridiculous. Rooftop came out on short notice (a +) and spent 3 hours inspecting the chimney inside and out. Jon and Dan were great. Extremely neat...freshly washed sheets were put down everywhere. They even went up into the attic to inspect the walls where the chimney runs alongside the house. Their inspection came back with the same issues that the first company had but their repair recommendations weren't anywhere near as drastic. I highly recommend them for inspections. I can only assume that the repairs would be made with the same high level of quality.

UPDATE: Rooftop Chimney Sweeps CEO Dylan Raycroft reached out to me to figure out what went wrong with my experience and was responsive and apologetic. I believe that he will be addressing the communications issues that caused the problem. I have changed my rating to reflect this outreach. Thanks for reaching out Dylan. They quoted me about $300 to replace the cap and I said fine. They came, looked at the job and sent me an invoice. Thinking the job was completed, I paid the invoice. Imagine my surprise when I received an email from the technician telling me he would give me a quote for the work that needed to be done. So it hadn't been completed yet. It took them 4 or 5 days to reimburse the money. In the meantime, the technician sent me a quote for over $2000. Needless to say, I said no thanks and went with another company.

Perfect. They were prompt, professional, friendly, courteous. I was having a new roof put on my house and the roofers discovered that my chimney needed some repair work done. Trevor and John, from Rooftop Chimney Sweeps, came promptly, gave me an estimate and did the repairs. The lead person from the roofing company even commented to me what a "top notch" job that they did.

I have revised my initial review after a long discussion with the owner of Rooftop. He took considerable time to explain the situation and offered some suggestions to alleviate the problem. He also explained the restrictions, requirements and costs of performing outside work in Old Town Alexandria. On top of that, he refunded 50% of the Service Call Charge; although I told him it was not necessary. Should I require services again, I would use Rooftop Chimney Sweeps in the future.

We have used Rooftop Chimney Sweeps for nearly 30 years. Historically they have been great - neat, clean and never recommended unnecessary work. While they were punctual and very neat, the price for cleaning went up to almost $300 (used to be about $100-150), then they said I needed additional work of almost $5000 - $4000 of which was for a situation I have had for 20 years, that they have personally inspected many times and never said a thing about. The issue is that in my second flue, that used to be for the furnace before I got a high efficiency furnace, was now only for the ?Orphaned? water heater vent that they said is undersized and needs an entire new flue liner (for close to $4000). I?ve never had a problem with it and no one - including the HVAC folks I trust a lot who just replaced the furnace - or previous inspectors from Rooftop, ever mentioned. They also said that the chimney cap was cracked and needed to be sealed and the flashing was decomposing and need to be replaced. On top of those really high prices, I really resented the very hard sell that their guy, Griffin, pushed on me - with a meaningless explanation for why I need the new flue after 20 years (he had some crazy mathematic answer that came down to "It's ten times bigger than it ought to be.") or why the other things - like a simple coating on the cap, were so expensive. I went with the cap and it took them about 5 minutes to do (for $525!) - a little internet reading later found that it?s easily a DIY project for about $20 in materials and should have two coats - they just brushed on one and left it. I decided I should do the cap seal because it will get worse with the freezing weather and had thought they would do a more professional job (which I don't think they did - since they only put one coat on). Needless to say, I didn?t go with the rest of it. Griffin called back after several days trying the hard sell again. When I said I wanted to get another quote, he quickly ended the call.

We had initially contacted Rooftop Chimney Sweeps for a clean and inspect of our chimney 4-years ago, when they cleaned and inspected our chimney after the August 2011 earthquake in Northern VA. The service and workmanship were excellent. We contacted them again this year (2015). Upon the requested service (clean and inspect chimney), all actions were undertaken in a satisfactory manner. The technician (Griffin) drafted a recommended list of repairs for the chimney and proceeded to "hard sell" (in used car salesmanship fashion) the comprehensive list -- without asking about how we use the fireplace. The total recommended cost was over $6000.00. We were very put-off by the technician's demeanor and method. Later, I called the owner (Andy) to discuss the recommendations. Andy took the time to explain the repairs recommended by his technician, and after understanding how we use the fireplace (wood-burning, 2-3 chords of wood per season) he stated that we only required a portion of the repairs in the original estimate. We settled on a crown coat seal, flashing seal repair and firebox re-build. On 18 September the Rooftop crew of Drake, Tristan and Minor arrived shortly after 8 a.m. and began work. The professionalism, cleanliness and quality of work were all excellent. Andy stopped by during the work to speak with me and ensure the job was proceeding as agreed-upon. The team finished all work and cleaned-up by 4:30 p.m. I would definitely recommend Rooftop Chimney Sweeps to anyone requiring fireplace/chimney service. Excellent overall - cannot be more impressed. Will definitely use them again for my chimney service.

A couple of years ago I had a very negative experience with another chimney inspection company that resulted in and approximately $10k estimate for repairs. I found my own $10 solution to get me by a couple of years but needed to revisit the original issue. I started by scheduling 3 inspections to make sure that I got a "2nd opinion" and I'm delighted that I started with Rooftop Chimney Sweeps, LTD because their customer friendly, thorough, clean and experience filled process provided me with the confidence to cancel my other inspections. Both Perry and Eddie were fantastic, they came in and confirmed why they were there, they listened intently to make sure they understood the symptoms associated with my issue and then inspected the chimneys from the inside. They cleaned the 1 chimney I use regularly for burning wood and then performed a Level 2 inspection which included a GoPro video of the entire chimney lining. I watched the entire thing live on an iPad while they explained what they were seeing. In addition to the video, they took pictures for the report. After retracting the camera, they played the video again to show additional details about what they captured before we repeated the process for the 2nd flue on that chimney. From the inspection, they made a recommendation to address the issue starting with a $99 flue tile extension; compared to $10k I was very happy. In addition, we have a series of next steps to try if the issue continues ranging in price from another $100 through to a more in depth improvement that might cost as much as $2,500; again, happy to have options. Afterwards, they inspected the furnace flue from the inside (something I did not ask for but am happy I have), walked around the house to inspect the 3 chimney structures and then went to the rooftop. They added the flue tile extension and noted a couple of other minor areas for improvement that I'll likely address on their next visit. Worth nothing that their dedication to customer serviced was also experienced through their notification of their [slight] delay. The Rooftop services were scheduled between 1:00-3:00 and showed at 1:30. I received two notification calls about their delay; one from the office and one from the team in route. The team was apologetic both before, during and after their visit and it had absolutely no bearing on me or the service provided.
Description of Work: 1) Visually inspected 3 chimneys (4 flues) from inside, outside and rooftop. 2) Diagnosed one flue needed to be cleaned and cleaned it. 3) Performed Level 2 Inspection of 1 chimney (2 flues) to diagnose issue. 4) Provided recommendations to address issue starting from least expensive. 5) Installed flue tile extension

Very easy to work with, very responsive and helpful. The ductwork installed in basement was not insulated, and I have been trying to get them to come back and replace with pipe that won't be hot to the touch. I've been waiting a few weeks while they try to work out a question about what DC code requires. That's been a little frustrating, but in general, I'd be happy to use them again. Prices were fair and technicians were polite, informative, quick and left very little mess.

The service was outstanding. We have used two other companies from Angies' in the past but felt they have not done a great job. Rooftop technicians (Perry and Sam) were very professional and knowledgeable explaining everything along the way. Very clean and careful of our things. They used video to inspect and took lots of pictures. There were some cracks on the crown which they repair with a latex coat. While on the roof, they went the extra mile (at no cost) by removing some rust on our hvac vent pipe and painting it to protect it. They even took down some small dead branches that were sitting on the roof and also attached a new vent for the dryer ....fantastic! Will hire them again next year.

We'd like to tip our hat to Rooftop Chimney Sweeps for the excellent job they performed installing a direct vent gas stove. We live in a 19th century home in Old Town Alexandria, and two other chimney companies had told us that putting our masonry chimney back in use for a direct vent stove wouldn't be possible. Tom Raycroft and his top-notch team knew otherwise and enthusiastically took on the project. You can tell Tom is a true master of his craft and throughout the process Tom and Tristan were unfailingly polite, patient, and professional. It was a pleasure to work with Rooftop and we love our new direct vent stove.

It seemed to go fine. I called them because I was having smoke leaking back into the house through one fireplace when we used the other fireplace. My chimney is brick with three flues, and the two fireplace flues are next to each other. The third flue is the furnace flue. Roof Top was courteous and seemed to understand the problems. They showed me pictures of interior cracked flue tiles, a cracked crown and moss growing on the exterior of the chimney. The estimate came a few days later via email with the pictures. They were recommending that I replace the few worn bricks, replace the chimney crown, waterproof the outside of the chimney, and line the two flues with stainless steel liner pipes. They were going to do this for about $12,000. I was in shock, and called two other chimney repair companies. One company looked at the pictures only and offered to do the same job for $6000. The third company came to inspect the chimney without charge. They could see the interior of the chimney without a camera and told me I had 6 cracked flu tiles among the three flues. They pointed out that the cracked tiles were near the top of the chimney and could be easily replaced. This third company also pointed out that the smoke leakage was probably due to the close proximity of the two fireplace flues. They said that as the smoke from one flue was leaving the chimney it was being sucked down into the adjacent flue due to negative pressure. They recommended flue damper caps to keep the smoke from entering the house due to negative pressure. I hired this third company because they were knowledgeable about the physics of the system. They replaced the four worn out bricks, the chimney crown, the cracked flu tiles, waterproofed the chimney exterior, resealed the flashing, and installed two flue damper caps for the price of $3000. Both fireplaces work really well and there is no smoke leakage. I am pretty sure that Roof Top's $12,000 solution would not have fixed the smoke leakage problem due to negative pressure.
Description of Work: I hired them for $200 to check my chimney both inside and out because I smoke was leaking back into the house when I burned wood in a fireplace. They used a camera for the inside of the chimney and found cracks in some of the flue tiles. They also found a cracked crown, and talked about water problems due to a few worn out exterior bricks. He showed me the pictures of the interior and exterior problems. I gave him $200 and waited for the written estimate.

We appreciate the fireplace/chimney inspection and they did a good job with our dryer vent cleaning. We had requested a Level 2 chimney inspection, but they didn't have a ladder tall enough to get on our townhouse roof, so they said they would contact us to let us know when they would come back out to finish the inspection. We did not hear back from them, so we called and spoke to Michelle Leissler who said she would have someone get back to us about finishing the inspection. We never heard back from them. They did, however, only charge us for the service performed, so we did not pay the extra fee for the Level 2 inspection.
Description of Work: Inspected our chimney, gas fireplace, and cleaned our dryer vent.
