I hired Rick's to install sheet vinyl and replace my existing carpet with new heavy duty carpet designed for use in offices. The installation of the sheet vinyl seemed to be good. The installation of the carpet was not. The workers did not have the correct materials. This particular carpet is designed to have a felt padding not the thick padding that was installed. This created problems with laying the carpet smoothly on the floor. When I contacted Rick's an installer came out and indicated that this was the padding indicated on the order. Not being a professional carpet installer I relied on Rick's to insure that the materials used were correct type. Part of the job was to install new molding which was installed leaving a gap between the molding and carpet. In general the work done on the carpet did not look professional! A few days after the installation of the vinyl and carpet was completed I noticed a strong odor in the room. I assumed that it was a result of the residual fumes from carpet dyes or the vinyl. After months the fumes had not lessened and actually gotten worse so I had the carpet removed and replaced with sheet vinyl to match what had been previously installed. That only made the fumes worse. They finally became so bad I had to seal off part of the basement. I contacted several companies to help determine where the fumes were coming from. I found an environmental company to help get rid of the fumes. They discovered that so much adhesive had been used when the vinyl was installed that one year later it was still gooey and came up in big blobs. This was the source of my smell. Unfortunately the adhesive also contaminated the bottom of the walls and the fumes actually have discolored the walls. Now one year and THOUSANDS of dollars later I have a basement rec room encased in plastic to prevent the fumes from spreading any further into my house. But the worst part of this is that a job that was done incorrectly has forced me to move from a house that I love.
