I called back on Monday, and the gentleman said they called me aroung 1:15 pm. So I agreed to meet again Monday evening between12 and 4pm. I asked to call me 1 hour before someone come so I will be there. Abour 5 minutes after 3 pm I was called by the technician that he was at the location. So I had to rush at that time during rush-hour to meet him at the location. He was polite and professional and did a professional job, but I paid more than I had plan on for the problem. He was surprised how long I waited on Sunday and no one showed-up. Overall ; communication, time, special request for convience seems not to mean a thing to the company or the office in the DC area.
Description of Work: I made an appointment for Sunday from 8am to 12 o'clock to have an electrical repair done which I had a dead circuit, and was called at 11:30 am that there will be a delay. I ask to call me before 12 o'clock if no one will be at the location where I am waiting. No one called after wainting until 1 pm. So I went back home after waiting all morning. Not even a call at home.

Two very nice, clean cut alleged professionals arrived and where here for a couple of hours. Upon leaving, and after charging what I thought was a pretty high fee, one told me to remember if there was any problem to call them and someone would come back out. Sure enough, the plug didn't work and was in fact installed upside down. I fixed it myself and I'm a middle aged woman. Never again Michael and Sons. I don't know the actual date.
Description of Work: I needed a GFCI plug replaced.

The electrician was Ron Rosales and the simple truth is that I had an estimate for less, but Ron was so personable and willing to explain the nuances to me that I hired him on the spot. The original estimate (using a company guide) was $492.30, Ron called his boss, fully explained the work to be done and the other estimate I had and the boss agreed to come down to $325.00.The job was done perfectly and I would have Ron out here again for any further electrical needs.

I called them to do some work on a rental townhouse I own. The hot water heater was acting up and not doing its job. The guy arrived on time and was nice enough but wanted to charge me almost $90 for a small part that I knew was available at Home Depot for less than $5!! I challenged him on that, and he admitted that it was the case but just shrugged, implying that he was just doing what his company wanted him to do. I said forget it, I'll get someone else to do it, which I did. I could not believe that anyone would try to mark up a product so much, about 900% !!! What a rip off! I've been meaning to post this for the longest time, but just now got around to it after I saw this other company listed them in their directory as being one of the top local a/c people! Avoid them at all costs!
Description of Work: The hot water heater was not functioning and we called them to diagnose and fix it. We had a pretty good idea what the problem was but I needed it fixed fairly quickly so I had to get someone other than my regular contractor to do the work.

I called Michael & Sons the morning of August 1, 2012. I spoke with the person who schedules the appointments and I informed her that my water heater was not heating the water and that there was water pooling underneath my furnace/HVAC unit. It did not seem as though the pooling water was related to my hot water heater but since the units are all next to each other and I have no knowledge of these things, I did not want to speculate. The appointment scheduler (who was very professional and pleasant) informed me that I would probably need a plumber for the hot water heater and a AC tech for the water under the HVAC unit. She told me that the price for a diagnostic would be $29.00 for the water heater issue and if I would need an HVAC evaluation that would be $89.00. We both agreed that the most cost effective option would be to have the plumber come out first and if the problems are not related then I could have the AC tech come out on another day. This way it would be possible, in theory, that I would not have to pay $89.00 should the pooling water issue actually be related to the hot water heater. Since my current problem was the lack of hot water this seemed to be the best way to address the matter. I was scheduled for a same day appointment between 10 am and 2 pm. At about 10 am, I received a phone call from the technician (Matt). I did not hear the telephone so I did not answer it. Matt left me a voicemail message with his call back number. I was pleasantly surprised by this because I have dealt with another company in the past (the company that actually installed the water heater, furnace, and HVAC units) and they never seem to get the telephone thing correct which made scheduling and keeping and appointment with them very frustrating to say the least. I called the technician back and he answered right away. He thanked me for calling him back (wow!) and informed me of his current location. He told me that he would arrive at my home in about 45 minutes. He arrived about 45 minutes later as promised. He brought a door mat with him, which he put over my door mat, he wore shoe coverings, and was very respectful of my home. You can see above for the service he performed on the water heater, but the gist of it is that his initial opinion was that, since neither thermostat was getting voltage, the upper thermostat had blown (probably due to all of the power surges we have had lately). I know absolutely nothing about water heaters (even after reading the owner's manual). After Matt hooked the voltage reader up to the thermostat panels and showed me that there was no voltage coming to either thermostat, all I could think was "this job could cost a few hundred bucks." The unit is still under warranty but I figured the labor was going to be pricey. We then discussed the repair price for the upper thermostat Matt quoted me a price of $276.76. However, as we were talking, he reached over to the upper thermostat panel and pressed a small red reset button on the unit's upper thermostat panel and the water heater kicked back on. Now I looked in the owner's manual and can't recall whether there was any mention of a reset button and if I had seen it on my "look-see" prior to calling Michael & Son I would have pressed it. Perhaps in my frustration I missed it, who knows. Anyway, I say all this to say that Matt could have sold me a bill of goods and I would have bought it but he is apparantly an honest man. Because of Matt's honesty, courtesy, and professionalism, I will use Michael & Son for some of the other work that I need done, like the HVAC water leak issue which still needs to be resolved. As an aside, Michael & Son offered to test my water quality for free, which Matt did during his visit. He also suggested that I get a home surge protector and said that I should call one of their electricians to come out to give me a free electrical inspection and an estimate for the surge protector.
Description of Work: My water heater, which is two years old, stopped working yesterday. The hot water was coming out of the faucets cold. The technician (Matt) came out and felt the pipes coming out of the water heater. Feeling that both pipes were cold, he removed the upper and lower thermostat panel covers to the water heater and tested whether the thermostats were receiving voltage. When he tested them, neither of the thermostats were receiving any voltage. Matt explained to me how the thermostats work and he explained that the upper thermostat was the one that was not functioning properly. We discussed possible causes for the malfunction and the price to replace the thermostat. Matt then pressed the reset button in the upper thermostat panel and the unit fired up and began working again.

The initial experience was very positive. Michael & Son did the initial visit to begin our maintenance contract for the above. Their technicians were professional and on time - however we soon realized that the air condition tech didn't put any coolant in our unit! We lost our a/c twice after DC's derecho. Per our maintenance agreement, they sent a tech to our home who told us that the coolant hadn't been replaced during the initial visit. Then the technician proceeded to tell us how he didn't make any commission on his visit to us because we had a maintenance contract! That was more info than I needed. The a/c again quit within 8 hours of the visit. The next day the same tech arrived with the same comment about the commission. He did say that we would probably need to have the unit replaced. He told us he would have a "comfort consultant" contact us. He didn't. After not hearing from Michael & Son for a week, I called them to make the appt for a comfort consultant to visit us. Comfort consultants are given a 3 or 4-hour window to visit even though we were his first appointment of the day. Communication went from bad to worse. Short of the story is we don't plan to ever work with Michael & Son again.

Michael and Sons called near the beginning of the 12-4pm appointment window and said a technician would be there in 30 minutes, which he was. The technician was very personable, professional, and knowledgeable. I explained that another provider had made a repair and said my refrigerant was low and there was likely a system leak. He checked the system thoroughly and found it to be runny normally and assured me that there was no leak. He spent time providing information on maintenance and things to look for in the future. He charged me the $89 as expected for the visit, and while he did recommend his company's service contract, he did not pressure me to buy it right away and said I could check it out and sign up on line if I wanted to. I was very happy with the visit and will call them the next time I need service.

I realized the heater (gas furnace) was not working properly. The fan came on and worked but the heat did not come on. I called Michael and Sons and they were able to come out that day. The arrived and placed a mat at the front door and the technician put on surgical booties over his shoes when he entered the house. Nice touch. When I explained the problem, he instantly knew it was the starter switch/ignitor. He removed the access door and easily accessed one screw to remove the part and showed me the burnt out section. He said the part would be $175 to replace. I thought that seemed like a lot, especially since I had to pay the $90 for the service call on top of that. I declined the new replacement. Later I found that the part was actually only $29. If they had applied the $90 service call to the effort and charged a reasonable price for the part, my experience might have been different. But, as it stands...way overpriced.

Areas of drain problems were fixed the day after the call was placed or the day of the call if placed in the morning.
Description of Work: Michaels and Sons joined us on move in day to unclog a laundry sink line and camera the line. They returned to unclog a first floor toilet, snake the drain and camera the line. They came again to power jet the main sewer line, and returned to re-examine the problem when the drain backed up with a major storm, only to discover that the broken gutter was pouring too much water into the drain to handle. They did offer to jet the drain line again without further cost but advised against it given the type of line and the fact that the gutters were due to be repaired that week--advice that we consider fair and accurate. They spent time and effort to make sure our home was secure against water intrusion. We signed up for a home care plan. The drains are now working. We followed our favorite plumber to Michael and Sons from ARS and we are generally impressed with the responsiveness and knowledge of most service personnel, although prices are high, earning a B in that category.

Did not use them for obvious reasons....
Description of Work: Watch your wallet folks... I needed my 19' x 21' garage floor demo'ed and replaced. I got a total of four quotes for this work: $4,600, $4,800, $5,700 and from Michael and Sons (wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, wait for it) $`14,700 AND they used a lower grade concrete than the winning bidder, as well as only a ONE YEAR WARRANTY FOR CONCRETE, and the winning bidder has a lifetime warranty. I didn't see it in the quote, but it must have been 14K gold they were pouring....

I have used Michael & Sons twice before for electrical and plumbing service, and was very satisfied. However, I wrote the company to express my dissatisfaction with services performed at my home on May 1, 2012, by their technician. I requested that a plumber come to my house to repair a leak around the base of my bathroom toilet and a leaky bathroom faucet. The technicaian fixed the leaky bathroom faucet. The subject of my letter was regarding the work performed on the toilet. The technician performed unnecessary work that did not solve the problem and I requested a refund of the work performed on the toilet, $238.09. No refund was provided. I called the company back and requested that a plumber come back and fix the toilet. I was given a service appointment between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM on Friday, May 11, 2012. After not receiving a call until 2:00 to say that Mr. James was delayed at another job site and that they would call back when he was on his way, at 3:00 PM, the technician called and said that he was on his way. I told him that I was now unable to meet him at my home, and reminded him of what the appointment time was. Another technican came to our house at 4:30 PM and met my husband. He stated that the toilet needed to be pulled and additional work performed, where we paid an additional $450. The technician did a good job and faced some frustration from my husband and I and he remained professional throughout it. This recent experience was the worst experience I have ever had with a repair company.

We called Mr. Plumber and set up a time frame of 7 am to 11 am. The company called my husband at 10:50 am to let him know that the guy was finishing up a job and will be there shortly. My husband called Mr. Plumber again about 11:30am and they said that the service tech was in Manassas and would be there shortly. At that point, my husband called Michael and Sons and they came over before the scheduled tech from Mr. Plumber could make it.They took care of the issue. The only comment I would make is that the service tech from Michaels spent a lot of time on his cell phone and he had to leave to get the piece he needed to complete the job. We only paid for the work, not the time so we weren't too upset but it is distressing the amount of time some of these techs can waste. We were pleased with the completed job and no problems so far. Another thing - Michael's only charges $29 to show up. Mr. Plumber charges $75. I would call Micheal's again.

I'm selling my house and had a very specific list of stuff that needed doing. My handyman couldn't do the work and recommended Michael and Sons, who sent a plumber out that day. I expected I would get a written estimate before work began, but I didn't. He'd already started work when I called and asked for the estimate, which he gave me verbally, but later he increased it by several hundred dollars (from $1100 to over $1700). I kept telling him to just do what was on the inspection report, and he kept saying he would give me a deal, and not charge me for things, and give me a free inspection of the whole house, but that he would "clean up" some previous work -- and I kept telling him just to do what was on the house inspection report -- and he just kept talking about how it might cost a little more but would be better in the long run, blah, blah, blah. When I told my realtor how much they wanted, she jumped in her car and ran over to my house and kicked the plumber out. He was there for 1.5 hours and replaced one pipe and value for $540! She told me that Michael and Sons overcharges and I now know that to be true. Stay away from them!

Excellent. We highly recommend Michael & Son Services.
Description of Work: They came out and found the issue that our regular maintenance provider could not find and the old provider charged over $400 and made two visits to determine the problem. Michael & Son Services were reasonable and quick to respond without charging after hours fees like the other repair company had, and they replaced our air handler and heat pump for over hundred fifty dollars less than the competition could. I liked that they included a free plumbing inspection of the house and reported any issues they found. Because the job was plumbing and electrical, I felt like I had no choice but to get these guys. With the toilet visit, the gentleman was quite late arriving and ended up working while we were trying to have dinner. I thought charging us over $400 to replace a wax ring under the toilet was really exorbitant -- I doubt it took him half an hour to do the work. One of the toilets they "repaired" has been running ever since, so they did more harm than good there, but their rates are so high I have not called them back. I was afraid they would tell me that the toilet was running for an unrelated reason and charge me another $100. Their fee for the hot water heater was very high compared to other local plumbers, which I only discovered after the fact. With all the various add-on charges (permit, drip line, this and that) it came close to $2800 and it's not even a 75 gallon heater. It also is very slow to heat water in the winter (an hour between showers!) but again, their fees are so high I don't want to bring them back out for a visit. We used them several times because they came highly recommended by a neighbor but I think we could have gotten better, cheaper service.
Description of Work: In the most recent visit, the serviceman put a wax ring under the toilet to stop it from leaking. In other visits, they have replaced numerous faucets (kitchen and bath), repaired the flushing mechanism of several toilets, and replaced our gas hot water heater.

Went very well. It was a pleasure for him to be in our home. He was patient, caring. wearing booties and protecting things where he was working. He spent 3 days here, June 6,7, and June 12th. The only problem we had was when he finished the work in the laundry room . Harry accidentally bent the top of the dryer. It made a funny noise and I called Michael and Sons and they sent someone at our house late Saturday night to check it out. Felix came out and checked it and found out that the top of the dryer was bent. Called Sears and they fixed it. Michael and Son's rock! They worked around our busy schedules too! He came back Tuesday to replace the wires for the dryer, Needed to correct things from the Panel and he did. Passed a rein spection on Wednesday Morning. Kuddos to the team at Michaels and Sons. Very polite friendly and able to work with us. I would use them again and again. My Thanks Harry for his handwork. Felix who came out Saturday Evening after we had a meeting that day. And especially from the people who I talked on the phone too. Yes, It was expensive! Having an unsafe house and having a fire is expensive too! THANKS MICHAEL AND SONS.
Description of Work: Harry from Michaels and Sons worked for 3 full days in our house. Replacing all the wiring for a new circuit breaker, labeling the Breakers, putting up a Ceiling Fan with Lights in the kitchen, major overall on the wiring in the house. Changing the wiring for the dryer, Attic fans and a new hemostat for the attic. He did a great job and it was a pleasure for us to have him work in our house.
