The technician arrived on time and was very courteous. He found the problem within about a half hour and took the time to explain the issue that caused the electricity to short out, which was apparently due to the way the initial electrical boxes were installed at the time the back yard was renovated. He needed to replace the box, but also indicated that I'd probably need to replace other conduits - at a cost of more than $1,000. I elected to get only the immediate problem fixed, on which I was required to "sign off". He then offered to give me a free house electrical analysis. The inspection and subsequent explanations took at least an hour. While there was one item that needed to be addressed, the rest were "nice to haves," costing at least another $1,500-2,000.While the technician seemed very knowledgeable, I felt that he was trying to "sell" me more services. I also thought the prices were very high, compared with other electrical services I have had, i.e. almost $200 to fix the chain and ground wire on a hanging fixture. After he left, he emailed me a list of all the work, plus estimated prices.
Description of Work: The lights and electricity were not working in my backyard, which seemed to happen after a bad storm in December.

A short section (about 8 feet) of flashing under the roofline of our house came loose during a windstorm and we needed to get it reattached. We also have two light fixtures mounted high up on the back of the house and needed to get the bulbs replaced. There are two old TV dishes mounted on the chimney and we wanted them removed. My husband could do all this himself but we don't have a big enough ladder and figured it would be cheaper to hire someone with the right size ladder than to spend around $400 for a 25 - 30 foot ladder. We had used Michael & Sons to replace a leaking hot water heater a few months earlier. Their work was expensive but not much higher than another plumber's estimate and with the hot water heater about to fail at any moment there was no time to get more estimates. Their work was good for the plumbing so we called them about the handyman work. Two guys showed up to give an estimate. They did not bring a ladder so they were not about to look at anything along the roofline. Our house is two stories, about 35 feet to the top of the chimney. The estimators claimed, without any way to measure, that the house is 45 feet tall. The estimate was $750 to replace the flashing. They claimed that the flashing was badly torn (there is a small tear which only needs a bit of caulk) and they would have to custom make and bend a new piece of flashing. They still deny that this is a standard piece of flashing that can be easily purchased for under $100. They wanted between $200 and $300 to replace the light bulbs (which I already had). I never did get a straight answer about their estimate on the satellite dishes. I was home alone when the estimators came and felt that they just tried to take advantage of a little housewife who wouldn't know any better. (This little housewife has refurbished six houses in the last five years and has a pretty good idea what this sort of work should cost.) Needless to say, we did did not accept their estimate. My husband is now so furious with MIchael & Son that he refuses to allow them back into the house to do an HVAC inspection which we already paid for. We don't believe that we can trust Michael & Son to give a fair opinion of anything because they are more interested in seeing how much money they can get out of us.
Description of Work: Reattach a short length of roof flashing, replace four light bulbs in two outdoor fixtures, remove two old satellite TV dishes from the chimney.

The man who presented himself was well spoken and presented the company well. They charged me about 600 dollars to put gutter guards on, but the people who they sent did not do well of the reinstallation of the gutters. They did do well on the soffits, but also did not do well on the gutter guards. When I advised them of the incorrect work they did I was advised that they were done doing work at my home and would not resolve the situation to stand behind their work. I would not recommend using them as they are overpriced in the market.

The first day 3 guys dug out the toilet in the basement and around the entry of the sewer pipe from under the floor reaching to the outside of the house. The other guys arrived with their machine which worked underground pushing out the old, damaged and rusted sewer line pulling in at the same time the new line. Once the old sewer line was removed (full of roots and rust) the angle of entry to the basement had to be made, and the internal pipe was then changed and connected. There were ofter 3-6 people working at a time. The drill which was pushing through my hillside (to avoid loss of trees along the way) broke three times and had to be changed, but the guys stayed on the job until it was done and stayed late until all was finished and secured after each days work. As it was Thanksgiving week I appreciated that they came early and stayed late until the area could be made secure waiting for DC inspectors, who came the next week. Then they filled in the holes and left. I should have asked for a last viewing of the site for a few adjustments such as painting but I did not. I was too eager to get the area cleaned up for holiday visitors. Yet in contacting customer service later, Vance Shephard at Michael and Son was a great help getting details complete putting the basement area back in shape. I realize that a last inspection and using their painting crew would probably have been a better idea.
Description of Work: Excavation of sewer line exterior and interior. Removed old line and projected new line from the property line to the house, under the floor of the laundry room and to the site of the toilet which had exploded. Install floor drain next to sump pump. Removed and re-installed toilet with new pipes. All of the area of the downstairs toilet toward the sump pump had to be dug out to access the pipes and change them before reinstalling the toilet. Oversaw all permits and inspections and securization of the work area from start to finish. Tamped back fill with seed and straw to protect lawn. Refilled the work area after inspection.

First time calling Michael and Sons. Initial receptionist was very courteous and professional. She took down all my information and transferred me to the "remodeling" group. The Receptionist at the remodeling group after I had explained the service I was looking for informed me that their company only did estimates in my area on Mondays and that for a $49.00 fee I would have to wait until Dec 24th to have someone come to the house. I then asked if it could be sooner because I was going to be at home on Dec 19th, I was quickly informed that since they had no one in my "area" that day I had to pay a $99.00 fee for the privilege of having them visit my house. My distinct impression unfortunately was that the remodeling group was doing me a favor by taking my call. They didn't seem to be too interested in providing a service, but were only concerned with their fees. I'll try someone else! UPDATE! Michael and Sons did send an estimator at no charge to me. The person was very professional, and seemed to know just what needed to be done based on the structural engineers report I provided. In the end we received a bid for about 13K which was 10K more than anyone else we contacted.
Description of Work: Just called for an appointment for an estimate to repair some drywall. The person came to the house and I showed him what we wanted done. About a week later he produced and estimate of close to $13,000.00 which turned out to be almost $10,000 more than the closest bid I had from three other sites. In the end we did not use the company.

When the new unit was install for the first year I several issues that were not resolved quickly. I am now in the second year and now the carrier unit is running fine. The main think have to watch with this company their prices are high. The mechanics they send out may not really be experience. I have learn to ask for certain mechanics that know how to fix my issues. They also charge you a yearly fee of $65.00 to check your unit. They claim thisis required to maintain the 10 year warranty I have on this unit.. I question how this has anything to do with a manufactures warranty. When you deal with this company on anything, make sure to get two other estimates from other companies. It may save you a lot of money.
Description of Work: The company was called to repair my AC Carrier heat pump because it was not cooling the house. They attampted to repair the unit and charged over $300.00 dollars. Thier repairs lasted one day. I call them out for a second time. They were able to talk me in to a new unit. The 300.00 I spent in repairs was credited on the new unit.

This morning I called Michael and Sons with an emergency repair. I received a call my from my 25 yr old grandson stating that water was pouring from soffit in kitchen. No sign of where it was coming from. I had him turn water off in our basement. I was out of town and said I would pay for repair with my credit card. They refused to do it. Fortunately, I was able to secure Cropp-Metcalfe to come out immediately. So if you have an immergency and you are out of town don't call Michael and Sons!!

I contacted Michael and Sons for replacing a relay on my Heat Pump. They stated they had to come out and see the relay themselves. An estimate cost $89. They came advised it was a relay, which I had previously told them over the phone. They gave me an estimate of $775.00 which was in addition to the $89 estimate. I contacted a second vendor who came out and gave me a free estimate. They replaced the relay for $283.00. how can there be more than a $500 difference in cost to replace a relay. Both vendors showed me the exact same part that needed to be replaced when giving me an estimate and I watched the second vendor replace the part (direct from the manufacturer). My Heat pumping is working just fine for a lot less money.

As with every other time I've used their services, they were extremely prompt, courteous, super clean and did the work perfectly. They gave me an estimate a few weeks prior and then finished the work, which was scheduled for two days, in one. They always leave the work area immaculately.
Description of Work: I've used Michael & Sons 4 times over the last 4 years, most for plumbing, once to install a sink and fix a dishwasher leak, this last time to caulk my window frames that had leaked water in the wild winds and rain from Hurricane Sandy and to fix the drywall where the water had leaked into the living room and garage from gaps in the roof sealing and to reseal those areas. While I always thought their prices were a bit on the high side, I have no complaints about their work. I trust them to not only do it well, but to honor their guarantees. I intend to keep using them for any more needed repairs, including carpentry.

I purchased an electric water heater from Lowe's and Michael & Sons was the installer that they subcontracted out for it. I don't know their regular rates, but they were quite a bit cheaper this way than a couple of their competitors which I called, and they were able to get me a new water heater by 1pm after making the appointment at 8am. The work looks as good as the previous install had been, and they left my basement as clean as it was. The water heater works great. No complaints. I would call them again for other plumbing work.

Michael and Son came to my house to diagnose a dishwasher leak. We bought our dishwasher in 2010. The gentlemen was professional and convincing of his diagnosis. The diagnosis was that my dishwasher's motor and pump valve were leaking. He also drew a diagram showing where the problem was and how it was causing damage. He did not pull out the dishwasher, but looked underneath it with a flashlight and used his hands to sense where the leak was coming from. With his recommendation that the motor and pump valve needed to be fixed, I called GE to get a technician to service my dishwasher. The GE technician said the motor and pump valve were working properly and said the tubing from the dishwasher to the garbage disposal was not high enough and up to company specifications. This resulted in fine food particles getting clogged in the tube, causing the water to flow back no where but back to the dishwasher. After the plumber readjusted the tubing, my dishwasher works fine now. I would not use Michael and Son again because I had to pay $195 for the GE technician to come to my house to explain such a simple plumbing problem. The Michael and Son plumber could have accurately diagnosed the problem, fixed it, and I would have not had to call the GE technician and waste $195. As a result, I had to get a plumber back to my house to accurately fix the problem because the GE technician was not a plumber. The commercials on Michael and Son are deceiving, since they seemed to have failed to successfully diagnose my dishwasher's problem. Pick another company if you want it done right.

The plumbing technician was fantastic when we used the company for that. The electrical was an absolute mess. He said he needed a permit from Pepco and went to get it and never came back. We received Michael and Sons name from a neighbor, but obviously have seen many of their advertisements in the media. We called shortly after the derecho storm, when everyone in the DC area was probably calling to get generators installed, so plumbers were likely in low demand. We had no trouble scheduling a time for them to evaluate the situation, and they provided an estimate on the spot. The estimate was higher than I would expect; they would have charged an evaluation fee if I had not used their services, so it was a sunk cost at that point. They brought two plumbers, one of whom didn't do or say hardly anything during that time. He could have been shadowing or training during this house call. The main plumber ran the line quickly, found the clog about 20' down the pipe, and cleared it quickly. They were in an hour in about half an hour, and I haven't had any problems since.

After repeated calls and requests to their office and requests to their service personal to not park in the loading zone at Our local Lowes I have been hung up on by their office and laughed at by their service personnel. It is with arrogance and lack of consideration for the other customers that park in the parking lot and then have to wait (in some instances) 20 minutes to load their purchases as Michael and Son's have illegally parked in the loading zone while they shop. Also, beware as their employees work on commision, and they will not give you even a ballpark figure even on a water heater over the phone. As other Angie's List customers have graded them, they consistently receive lower grades on price. I will NEVER use this ARROGANT company or allow them near my home!

We bought a brand new air conditioner unit from Sears. They installed it and from day one the unit was noisy with a high pitched whine when the unit powered up to regulate the temperature. Then it started displaying a message to "Call Technician". Sears would send somebody out to fix it then 2 or 3 days later the message would reappear. Finally, because it didn't seem that the Sears technicians knew what they were doing and taking off from work to meet somebody between a four hour window can be inconvenient, we decided to call Michael & Sons. I thought they were expensive but I've since decided they're worth every penny. We haven't had any problems since. All we have to do now is remember to change the filter. They really know what they're doing!

My house sitter let me know that my heat pump started freezing over while I was out of town for the holiday. I called Michael and Son while I was away to set up a service appointment. The person I spoke with on the phone was professional but claimed that the office was closing. It should be noted that their website claims 24/7 service. We rushed around to get a credit card authorization form signed and returned. Initially, we attempted to set up an emergency appointment but the person on the phone wanted us to return the form by unsecured e-mail. That should have been a huge red flag -- I generally don't do business with companies that don't take the security of their customers' personal/billing information seriously. I did some research online and found out we could set the heat pump to "Emergency Heat," which would turn off the outside unit and let it thaw. It turns out that this is a common feature of heat pumps. I feel like the person I spoke with should have been able to provide this information. It would have saved us a lot of worry and potential damage to the heat pump. We ended up setting up and appointment for the day after we got back. They gave us a 4 hour block during which they'd show up. I feel like that's excessive. I shouldn't have to take off a half day of work just to wait for them to show up. The technician arrived on time and was professional. He examined the system and replaced the air filters with filters we already had on hand. He diagnosed the problem as a bad defrost control board and bad sensor. The diagnosis took approximately an hour. The technician said that the repair would cost $845.50 ($89 service fee, $565 for the control board, and $191.50 for the sensor). I told him that was significantly higher than I was expecting. He then went on about if I had a service plan with the company, I wouldn't be paying so much. He tried to sell me one of their service plans for an additional $389. I told him I was going to have to get a second quote and thanked him for coming. The total due was $89. I then called a different company. They gave me an exact time that they'd be there the next day and repaired the unit for $265.65 ($85 service/diagnosis fee, $80 repair/check fee, $70 for the control board, $18 for the sensor). In short, I feel that Michael and Son provided poor service and tried to rip me off. To add salt to the wound, I feel like they were attempting to charge exorbitant fees just to con me in to an expensive service plan. I feel that their tactics are deceptive and dishonest. I will never again do business with this company.

Called Michael and Son when the kitchen light failed. Estimate on the phone for $125 for the visit, parts, and labor on short notice. Two electricians arrived the following day, very polite, no fuss. Took the cover off the light, removed the tubes, opened up the wiring case and found a very messy wiring harness from the original installation. They cut out the unnecessary lengths of wire, rewired a section, and installed the new ballast and starter. Put everything back in place, closed it up, and were done in about 45 minutes.
