Michael & Son is family owned & operated and has been servicing the Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC area for over 30 years. We take great pride in providing our customers with the highest quality plumbing services. Our professional and courteous staff are here to help you with whatever projects you need to get done.
The service was great. Their customer service and everything about them was horrible. They never got back to my multiple emails and phone calls. When I started asking detailed questions they dropped me as a customer pretty much. Their sales guy was excellent, knowledgeable and very engaging. Once he was done with the estimate and handled it off they were non responsive to my phone calls and emails. As soon as I asked for details on the estimate as I wanted to sit down and talk about it, they dropped me as a customer and stopped engaging with me at all. The price was reasonable. I read reviews on Angie’s list for them and people either had good time or real bad time with them.

It was a horrible experience. They are all about the up sell, the tech told me my indoor filtration system was bad and that I need a new system, he left it lying in pieces on the floor. Then he tried to sell me a 300 dollar service contract. When I declined and ask him to just service the outdoor system. He found a different problem with a valve. He did not have the part, and said the service manager would call, no one ever did. We had to call twice to finally get someone who quoted us 1000 dollars to replace a 69 dollar part.

We purchased the house in the past year and knew the hot water heater was ready for replacement. The service technician arrived on time and did a thorough inspection of the entire plumbing system. As expected, he found a lot of issues caused by the previous homeowner (self-described handy-man that really didn't know what he was doing when it came to plumbing). I expected him to find some things that were not up to code, I was somewhat surprised at the cost of additional services (>$150 to replace a $10 valve). After applying a number of discounts, credits, etc. I was able to negotiate the price down to a reasonable level. My advice......NEGOTIATE, don't pay retail when they are already in your house.

DO NOT CALL THIS COMPANY. I had seen their advertisements/trucks all over and figured such a large company to be so successful had to be good and honest. I was wrong. Their success must be in the outrageous prices and in trying to get unknowing customers to buy new HVAC systems, rather than perform simple repairs. The quotes they gave me were not only high, it is price gouging. When your air conditioner stops functioning, most folks must be willing to pay anything to get it running quickly. Not me. I must have seemed an easy target for the technician: young female. What he didn't know is that I have an advanced degree in mechanical engineering and I am very familiar with HVAC systems. Let me start at the beginning. When I switched from heat to AC, this spring, I noticed my AC wasn't cooling, and I immediately suspected I had a refrigerant leak. I checked the filter and coil to make sure it was clean. Not the issue. A friend at work told me to call Michael and Sons. So I called and booked an appointment for Saturday early afternoon. I had a dinner party at friends on the other side of town that evening, so I was hoping they would show up on time and get my AC fixed. They gave me a 3 hour window. If they showed up on the later part of the window, I might not make the dinner. 2.5 hours into the 3 hour window, they called me to let me know they were running behind. They ended up busting the 3 hour window. First bad sign. The technician that showed up (Larry), while nice, was incredibly slow. He took about 45 minutes to confirm I was low on refrigerant and had a leak. My compressor is under my deck, so I couldn't see what he was doing, but I hoped he was searching for the leak. He then told me he needed to go to his van for parts and to prepare me a quote for repair. I waited another hour before he came back to give me a range of quotes ranging from $1738 (best case scenario) to $2196. These quotes all were on the assumption that it was a single.simple leak. He explained that if it was a more complicated, or multiple leaks, it would be much more. He also spent time trying to sell me a home care agreement ($389). He did not appear to search for the leak, not even a cursory look. That would have cost me $275 plus refrigerant cost on top of the $89 service call. He then asked if he could look at the inside system. I said sure, and showed him my utility closet. Before i knew it, he had slapped stickers on my HVAC and my water heater advertising Michael and Sons. As part of the quote, he told me when he looked at my system, he noticed I didn't have a liquid line drier filter and included a new one as part of the quote. I thought that was odd. First, if you have a leak, you need to install a new liquid line drier filter anyway, but I couldn't believe I didn't have one. He then asked if I wanted to schedule an appointment for repair. I laughed and told him no. Are you kidding? He then gave me a bill for $89 for the 'service call'. $89 for me to waste my entire Saturday, miss a dinner party, and be told what I already knew. I had a refrigerant leak. The worst part of the quote, was $85 for the first pound of R-410 refrigerant and $75 for each additional pound. Ridiculous! This did not include labor. You can buy a 25-lb tank of R-410 for $130 (go look on Amazon). This is the biggest scam going right now for AC repairs. R-22 is more expensive sure, but R-410 (puron) is available for a lot less. (Even the company I ended up hiring charged me $40/lb and he admitted it was a scam. He didn't charge me extra for the labor to "charge the system". ) It is near impossible to get straight forward answers/info on the cost of recharging you system anywhere on the internet. After he left, I went to see if I could see what he had done under the deck. I discovered I did have a liquid line drier filter (it was hidden under some leaves), and i noticed it was rusted/corroded. The source of the leak! I don't know how he missed it, and I suspect (but no proof), that he had noticed it, knowing that this was a straight forward fix. The fact he told me I had NO liquid line drier filter and needed a new one is entirely suspect. You can get a new one for around $30. It does take some work to replace it, evacuate the system, and then recharge it, but not for $1700! I ended up paying a total of $575 for the repair (not including the $89 I had to pay Michael and Sons for a sales call). BTW--I am still trying to scrape the stickers off.
Description of Work: Confirmed that my inoperable ac had a refrigerant leak and then provided quotes for repair.

They lied to me and said they fixed 60 feet and charged me accordingly. After getting another opinion, it was brought to my attention that they really only fixed 33 feet. They have said twice that it is not their problem. They eventually came back and fixed it after I had a contractor call them and they were scared of the damage it would do to their reputation. Michael and Son Service never even apologized for all of the trouble that they caused.

One of the worst, most unprofessional experiences I have ever had. After working with my employer to work from home the technician gave me a call within the repair time window and told me he couldn't find a parking spot and that he was turning around and service would have to occur another day. It was incredibly unprofessional. I can't remember a time when I had a professional commitment like a meeting and I couldn't find a parking spot so I just gave up and went home. Disgraceful. After I called the dispatcher to complain and get him to come back he called me and asked me if I would pay for any parking tickets he might get. Absolutely ridiculous. Finally, after about 2 hours of this crap he parked after much complaining and took a look at my HVAC. He took a look at it and came to the conclusion that I might need to replace the entire unit. He then told me I would have to get a second opinion. This was after he tried to sell me a bunch of crap I didn't need. The technician then told me he would try to call me back and setup a time for a second technician to come back. I never heard back from him. An utter and complete waste of my time and money. This is exactly why the industry has a bad name and attracts the lowest form of employee. There is no accountability and they will try to rip you off the first chance they get. Never again. UPDATE: Michael and Sons did actually get back to me after posting this review. We walked through the entire experience. My experience was my experience, but I'm glad they actually got back to me. For that reason I'm raising my Review from a D to a C.

The experience with Michael & Son Services Inc was positive, they were punctual and helpful. They did not charge what we thought we would, it was a much lower charge and they could have charged us for more and we wouldn't have known if it was needed or not. They were very polite, helpful and explained a lot. It was a situation where if the person had not been honest, we would not have known, they could have said anything and charged us 300 or 500 dollars but he said it was something simple and charged us very little. They seem to have a good have a very good reputation and that is important to them and they work hard to keep it at a high level.

He was very knowledgeable and provided us with guidance on what other things that we should have done so we don't have this problem again. Michael & Son Services Inc did a much better job than their competition of really figuring out what we needed so their Sales Engineer was terrific. The issue was the condenser had to be placed on the roof of a 4-storey condo which meant they had to bring in an 80-foot crane which doubled the price. The issue was a failure of communication betwee them and the people they sub-contracted to for the crane which cause a 3-hour delayed in the construction. We tied up the parking lot because with the crane, they need a bog foot print to put the truck in. The issue was sub-contractor management. The quality of their work was excellent. I probably could have gotten me a better price.

They were very professional and performed good work. Showed up on time, and called when they were on their way. And they didn't take very long to complete the work. The only downside was the price - but I suppose for the amount of work performed, the price wasn't terribly outrageous. They charge based on projects completed versus the time they spend working, so when they work quickly but complete a lot of projects, it can seem as though the price per hour is crazy expensive. But, again, they completed good work and got a lot done for us. I might try a different company in the future just for the sake of comparison, but I have no complaints with Michael & Son. If you need to get something done well and don't mind paying what I would consider a bit more, then this is your company.

In April of 2013 we had another back-up in the downstairs. We called Michael and Sons to check what was wrong. Fortunately, that day a contractor friend of ours came over and determined that Michael and Sons only replaced 30 feet from the house going to the street, instead of the 60 feet that we paid for. If it wasn't for this man helping, Michael and Sons would have charged us more money to replace pipes going further out to the street when we already paid for 60 feet and they cheated us out of the 30 feet that was never done. Our contractor advised us that we should sue Michael and Sons for their dishonestly and for cheating us out of so much money.

Very poor customer service. If you call a business on the phone and explain to them you do not have electrical in a room and want a ceiling fan installed and they will have to pull it from the attic, they should be able to provide a ballpark figure. I think their reasoning is if the technician is already here you are going to pay to get the job done. I gave him his $29 check and said have a nice day! I then immediately scheduled with the other company, who will do it for $250. I will never call M & S again for anything -- what a ripoff and bad business practice!!! The bright side is even with paying them $29 (for nothing!) I am still saving over $100 by not hiring them!!!
Description of Work: I took a day off from work for them to install a ceiling fan. First of all they would not even give me a ballpark figure over the phone as to how much it would cost. I had to pay $29 just for them to come out and look at it, and then when they got here they gave me a price of $385. I had called around and was given another estimate of $250, but I thought they would be cheaper so I scheduled with them.

Thank you for your response and for speaking to me today. We are very sorry for your experience and wish this didn't happen. I understand another company arrived and totally went against the evaluation that we offered to get your unit up to shape. When we were called it was to tune up your unit for the summer. Michael & Son Technician found some concerns but during our conversation June 6,2013 you verified that not only did you not need a new unit but the other company never found a concern or needed to charge your unit. Michael & Son take all concerns very serious and this will also be handled accordingly. We asked if we would be allowed to return to your home to verify what we have learned and you declined a manager visit. Again, thank you for speaking to us and we will make sure to continue to train and upgrade our technicians on this concern to make sure nothing like this happen again to you or others in the future.

My initial call was handled very professionally and I was impressed. A plumber was scheduled for Saturday from 8-12, and an electrician on Monday from 12-4. I specifically talked about 8 being kind of early, if it could be a 9 or 10 that would be better, and the associate said she'd make a note of that. I don't like these 4 hour windows, but it seems I don't have any say in that with any company. The one complaint I have about the upfront scheduling, is that they charge a $29 fee for the trip just to show up. On Thursday, I received a call from the company advising that the plumber was not the right person for my heat/ac call, and that a different tech would need to come out, but the fee was going to be $89 instead of $29. I agreed to the change and waited for the appointment window to arrive. This call was slightly under par when graded for professionalism. Saturday morning arrived, and here I sat from 8 to 12, with no call, no tech driving up. A four hour window is a long time out of my weekend to start with, but now I feel cheated. I called the company at a quarter after 12, to inquire about the lack of service. I was advised that my appointment was from noon to 4, not 8 to noon. I am looking right at my notes and this is not what was agreed too, specifically having noted that the associate was taking a note about 8 being kind of early. There is no way I misunderstood the time slot. I canceled the afternoon appointment (that I had not agreed to) as well as the electrician appointment on Monday (I do not want to repeat the same issue) I have no doubt there are other professionals out there who can make schedules and keep to them who would like my money.

The quality of Michael & Son's work was excellent -- but I feel their prices are quite high, even for this market. They charge by the project rather than by the hour; this is of course marketed as a benefit to the customer, but it is also a benefit to the company because they can get substantial payment for a job that takes only an hour or so. Installation of the lighting fixtures was about $300, and installation of the garbage disposal I felt was particularly high at nearly $600. This included the cost of the unit, which was provided by the workman so certainly had convenience value to me, but the unit itself retails for less than $100 in stores which means I was still paying more than $500 for installation. When I called to speak to Customer Service about it they were prompt and polite, but offered me only a credit against future work, not a refund. (They tried hard to convince me that "value-adds" like their service warranty help justify the price, but I was not persuaded. I've lived in DC for 30 years and I know what services tend to cost.) As a result, while I may use up that credit, I will be reluctant to use this company in the future unless I have a challenge that I feel a less pricey company couldn't handle well. By the way, I dinged them on responsiveness because I had first tried contacing them by email at the address provided by Angie's List, but got no response to it so had to call them to make an appointment.

Badly, overall. Upon arriving, the plumber from Michael and Son said he would have to a "leak seach" which would cost $180. Because this is what I had called Michaels to do, and after some back and forth, I authorized the search. He then took out his hammer and removed large portions of the ceiling in our living room. He was able to then confirm that the water was coming from the bath room that sits over that section of our living room. Duh. He then asked me to turn on and off the water at the tub and then the shower in the upstairs hall bath room. I did this but he was not able to identify the source of the leak. He then surmised that the only possibility was that leak was coming from the drain hole in the bath tub and said that I (not he) would need to replace the washer around the drain plug. Job done, bill rendered, and off he went. I immediatle called the Michael's phone number I had but could only confirm the price of their leak searches. Maybe I did something wrong myself, but it seems to me this was absolutely awful service from the get to. I later discovered on my own that the shower spout was not securely fastened and needed another twist to stop the leak. I fixed it and after considerable time, expense, and stress the living room ceiling was repaired and repainted. I am not sure of the date of this "service"; it was some time ago and I only recently became an Angie member and when I saw the Michael listing, . I could not resist sharing my experience. I sincerely hope it was a rare exception for Michael & Son.
Description of Work: Tried to find the source of a water leak. Water was seeping through the ceiling of our living room and obviously was coming from a tub in the bath room over our living room.
