It took them less than five minutes to complete to project and then charged me $215.00. I thought this was quite excessive. They said they would give me an estimate up front, but I never knew the price until after the project was completed.

Excluding small talk and the exchange of pleasantries, the actual job took whole 20 minutes, if that. $654 (including $89 rush fee). A bit steep, wouldn't you think? But, hey, they were the only ones (out of 3 calls) who agreed to come same day, and got the drains running...

We first contacted them in April to provide service on our ac unit. They schedule service but did not show during the allotted time. I contacted them that same day and felt I needed to force the issue in order to have someone show up. A repairman did come that day. He quickly identified what he thought was the problem. We paid a diagnostic fee and the unit appeared to be fixed. The ac stopped working again in June. I contacted the company and they offered an appointment that was several weeks out. I explained this was the second call on the same unit and we expected faster service. Again, after a lengthy discussion, I convinced them to get someone out the next day. A repairman came, diagnosed the problem and seemingly fixed it. This was the same problem as before, just with a different solution. We were charged a second diagnostic fee, but the repairman did find a way to give us a small discount on the charge. Now, here we are in July and the unit is once again not working. I contacted them on a Friday afternoon. I spent approximately 20 minutes on the phone with them, answering questions and encouraging them to drop the diagnostic fee, as we had already paid it. They promised to send someone the next day between 12-4. We stayed home waiting, but no one showed. I called the company and they claimed to have no record of our appt. After yet another long conversation, they agreed to have someone come on Sunday morning. They refused to grant us first call, even though we had already spent the previous afternoon waiting for them. I did not hear from them Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon I contacted another company who was able to send someone out to us. They arrived when they said they would, diagnosed the problem and we were talking about options when Michael & Sons arrived. Again, no call informing us of their eta or an explanation as to why we were kept waiting all day. On another note, they now send copies of their invoices via email. I was unable to locate copies of their last 2 service visits and asked them to resend, twice. I also asked to speak directly to a supervisor. None of my requests have been addressed. From customer service to the repairmen, everyone was polite. We have used this company for many years, but I am afraid the quality of service has declined significantly. If they were interested at all in customer loyalty, they would have tried harder to accommodate us after their scheduling mistake. I have lost confidence in their ability to meet their scheduling commitments and to accurately diagnose and fix problems. There are too many companies on Angie's list with excellent ratings to waste our time with this company. Update: Michael & Sons contacted me to apologize and offered a free one-year service agreement. I appreciate their effort to remedy the situation.
Description of Work: We contacted Michael & Sons to perform service on our ac unit. This was to be our third service call for the same issue.

At first he tried to repair and HVAC and charged roughly $200, he had a laptop to see how much a new pan would cost he quoted $309 and some labor cost, the next day the office called and stated it was cost roughly $1000, due to the part and 2 workers are needed, I canceled the future repair and tried to seek a credit for the first repair, also not sure if I can get paid for the broken pan?

I called Michael and Sons with an emergency water leak problem of an unknown origin. A previous plumber could not trace the origin of the problem so I called Michael and Sons. They sent Herb Thacker out and he arrived within 90 minutes of the call, in the DC area, that's fantastic!!! Herb called me (out of state landlord) and we discussed the issue, and he let me know he was unable to find the origin of the leak. He said he'd give it another really good search and do his best but we weren't optimistic becauseI didn't know much about the plumbing on the property. His second, detailed search for the problem was successful and boy was I relieved!! I'm so grateful for Herb's efforts!! Thanks so much! I will definitely use Michael and Sons for future issues, not just plumbing, but other services that they provide as well! Thanks!!

My elderly father n? law contacted Michael and Son to troubleshoot a malfunctioning fluorescent kitchen light. Michael and Son?s technician, Jimy Gonzales charged a vulnerable senior citizen $455.01 to change four light bulbs and ballast in the light fixture. Generally this light fixture cost approximately $75.00. In addition, Jim Gonzales convinced my father n? law that he needed a whole house surge protector and charged an additional $449.51. My father n? law paid a total of $1,224.51. Furthermore the technician recommended more electrical work that included replacing the main electric panel and the wiring connecting the meter and electric panel, which were unnecessary. My father n? law and his wife are senior citizens of the District of Columbia who contacted Michael and Son to provide a simple electrical service for a reasonable and honest price and the technician charged them inordinate prices for services they did not need. Michael and Son and the technician exploited my parents and we will never use or refer them as an honest vendor for electrical services.

The very nice young service technican arrived as scheduled in response to a call I made to M&S for plumbing help. He was perfectly polite and professional throughout this entire story. We were having discolored water in two of our toilets and since our tap water was clear and multiple flushings weren't clearing it up, we suspected some kind of backup in the toilet drainage plumbing. The technican asked how old the toilets were, and when I said 26 years... original to the house... he said they needed to be replaced. We have three toilets in the house and, strangely, only two were having this problem. He talked me into replacing the two and I was stunned with the price... essentially triple what a new toilet would cost at a big box hardware store. He said those were lousy an he was installing a high quality toilet. So we went ahead. It resolved the problem. When I pointed out our water heater was very old as well, he recommended replacing it before it ruptured. He did a fantastic job installing the new unit with a drain pan, moisture alarm, etc. It was a good decision on my part to do this replacement, but again, the cost was about triple what I now know we could have spent by buying it elsewhere. We had a leaking faucet in the kitchen, and the technican fixed it easily... and charged a very high fee to do so. He also installed a water pressure regulator for our incoming water supply price. Again, it was expensive and I don't really think we needed it. But I suppose it's a good thing. Given the very high cost of these two toilets, the water heater, and this extra repair, I chose to let him sell me a service contract, the cost of which One of the toilets developed a leak in the wax seal overnight and the technican came back and made a very fast repair at no addtional cost. Hey... accidents happen and it was promptly corrected with the appropriate apologies. So here are the problems: 1. The toilets really didn't need to be replaced. After thinking through the situation, we realized that a member of the family had just had a medical procedure done which required a special something to the digestive system. It was obviously a very gooey and sticky substance and it was adhering to the internal passages of the two toilets that person had used. The discoloration would have eventually cleared up on its own. Restult: Two new and very expensive toilets we really didn't need. But, I guess it's a good thing to have them replaced... the others were indeed 26 years old, after all. 2. The price of the toilets and the new water heater were, as said above, about three times what I've now learned they could have cost with another plumber and local purchase from Home Depot or Lowes. I feel I got ripped off. 3. The service contract meant we had to have our electrical and AC systems inspected, which required two more appointments where we had to be home... always an inconvenience. Thankfully, neither of them tried to sell me anything. Bottom line: Great, responsive, courteous service. Terrible prices. I don't expect to EVER use the service contract because I truly believe I'd be paying much to much for this "discounted" service. Do I regret calling Michael and Son? Not eally. I got some things done well... even though my bank account is now lighter. Would I recommend Michael and Son? Not very likely.

I used somebody else. That other company did a fabulous job for just under $2,000.
Description of Work: I got seven estimates on a water main. Everyone came in around $2,000 to $2,800. Michael and Son estimated $5,300. Of course, I did not use them. They said the job required a lot more work than everybody else in the industry advised. I felt they were just in it for the money and would shamelessly take all I would give regardless of fairness.

We realized during the evening of 12 June our house was not cooling adequately. I went outside to the HVAC fan and saw a ton of ice build-up and when we looked at the main blower system in the basement could see the same on the line coming in from the fan. We called several local shops that evening and got answering services. On 13 June we heard back from Michaels and Son and they offered to send a tech sometime before Noon. By the morning, with the system off, the ice had thawed which is always the first feedback the HVAC company gives you, "we can't work on the system until the ice thaws." We got out the fans, and did the best to get by waiting. Not having a choice for alternative solutions, we accepted the schedule. The tech did call sometime in the early afternoon and showed up to diagnose the problem. After diagnosing the system and thinking it may be a bad part, he did take it upon himself to drive to get a part and come back several hours later (kudos to him) even though he stated that he was concerned that it was another part (the ECM module) and that he didn't think he could get that part. After spending all afternoon around 4:00pm in a thunderous storm with our power going out he informed me that the part he installed was fine and it had to be the other part which he couldn't get until sometime tomorrow afternoon. Having informed the tech early in the day that we would be at a next of kin funeral all day on the 14th, he did attempt to get his organization to help him get the part earlier. He called me sometime Friday afternoon while I was attending the funeral indicated the ECM module was replaced and that he thought maybe it shorted due to the water that was thawing. He asked for my credit card, told me we were good to go, and left. During the day on the 13th he advised us that we really really needed a HVAC maintenance contract and that it would benefit us in scheduling in the future if we had that. So in addition to paying the large fee for the replaced ECM we also pre-paid for a year's maintenance. Ten days ago before a vacation we discovered the air purifier was never reconnected and made a note to call Michael's the day we returned. Unfortunately we could not get that far, as the day we returned from vacation (this morning) we woke to home that wasn't cooling. We quickly checked and noted freezing on the inside and outside. ****Here comes the good stuff***** Calling Michael's this morning to report that the same system that they repaired 23 days ago was not showing the same symptoms we were told we could either have an appointment for Thursday (yes two days from now) or we could be on call for POSSIBLY a late stop over tonight by a tech. After my wife shared that with me, I called back the main number and indicated to the "customer service" agent that they had just repaired my system and I couldn't wait for a possible on call visit late in the day. She politely indicated that there wasn't anything she could do. I respectfully indicated there was, and that she could get me to her supervisor. I was then told by the supervisor that "I didn't apparently understand her" when she emphasized that if I didn't want to wait for an appointment for Thursday that I was indeed being prioritized as an on call customer either later today or tomorrow. I told her that it was not acceptable that a system that they JUST repaired (I get that something might fail, thus the reason why you have a warranty), would not enable me to be put in a high priority status. She then said I could speak to the assistant manager in dispatch (I believe) to discuss it further with her. Coming back from hold she indicated she would ask the manager to call me directly on my home number. About 30-45 minutes later my wife received a call on her cell phone indicating a tech was on the way. We learned after several hours, the tech wasn't sure why the first tech would unwire the air purifier handler and tried to call him to ask. He was informed by the call on the other end the tech no longer worked for the company. He sat there for a while reading the installation instructions but was unable to figure it out. He then proceeded to try and diagnose the original issue and concluded the Freon level was fine, and everything was in working order. Possibly two additional filters were dirty and that may have caused the issue. Now I wonder if that was the original issue and the "failed ECM" wasn't the issue. He indicated to my wife that the system seemed to be working, to clean the two additional filters and he would return (this was around 11:30am) sometime tonight with someone who knew how to re-wire the system. I started writing this review (after I joined Angie's list to find an alternative vendor) around 8:45pm as we have not received a phone call or message as to why the tech did not return tonight. I will attempt to secure a refund for the maintenance agreement (oh by the way by signing the 1 year agreement we would have the office call and schedule a free inspection of our electrical AND plumbing systems within two weeks...that promise elapsed ten or so days ago) and look to my neighbors and Angie for an alternative contractor. There is a concept in customer satisfaction that refers to promoters, passives, and detractors. The net score (i.e., the percentage promoters minus the percentage detractors) is compared across regions and industry in the vertical of the business. The theory being based on a simple question how likely are you to refer us, our services or our products (if it's a product company) to a friend or family member. The low score range indicates the person will actively negatively not support the company in the market place, thus the name detractor. You could consider me a detractor for this company.
Description of Work: After 23 days from a repair (described below), we had a significantly difficult time getting the firm to come back out to our house to look at the same HVAC system that they "repaired" and reported on the original invoice as after the costly repair as "cooling system working correctly with no problems." Little did we know the tech left the premise not rewiring the main air purifier in the house and less than 30 days later, we had identical symptoms (i.e., ice freezing).

I had one tech come out to check the heat pump because it would stop blowing cold air from time to time. The unit is older about 11 years old so I was hoping it could be saved for now. He checked out the unit and said that it may last a few more months and that he tweaked it enough so that it would at least last a little while longer. He did put in a small amount of freeon in at no charge which was nice. He then said he would take a look at the other larger main unit to check and make sure it was cooling well. He said the main unit was fine but that he was going to send out another tech for a second opinion on the heat pump. This is where they lost my respect. The other tech came out the next day and went to the side of the house to check the unit. He then came and told me that yes the air conditioner needs to be replaced speaking of the main unit. I said wait a minute.. you were supposed to be looking at the heat pump not the main unit. He then said"you don't have a heat pump mam". First of all It clearly says heat pump on the unit itself. I have a dual system with a heat pump upstairs. I know what is in my house. I had to go out and show him the unit that kept stopping. He then said that one is blowing fine it's your other unit that isn't working. He then proceeded to write up 3 estimates for 3 different new units for us. Obviously they either have techs that don't know what they are doing or are just in it for the money. Ever since the first tech put the free on in our heat pump we have had no other issues with either of our units. I will never be using their services ever again.

Day one1: a young 1st year plumber came at the end of the time slot. I asked him to tighten the side screws and he told me he would have to pull the toilet to the tune of $297.00 I didn't want to put that much into it but I did. When he pulled it he found the contractor that refinished my bathroom did not do the toilet properly so the cost went up to $500.00. They had to put a hole in my ceiling in the family room. I asked if he was going to fix the hole and he said he doesn't do drywall repair. I did not let him do anything else till I called their office. They sent a manager who concurred with the plumber. He also said he would have a drywall guy come out with the plumber, he never materialized. Day two: the young man came 1 hour late, to give him credit he did call but after the time he was supposed to arrive, and got to work. He did not come with a drywall guy but later in the day I did get a phone call about the drywall which could not be fixed until day 3. The plumber cut the hole and fixed the toilet. He did a good job. Day 3: waiting for the drywall guy to fix the hole so I can paint the ceiling and sell my house. I had used them before for an electrical issue and the electrician, Matt, was awesome. I highly recommend their electrical division.
Description of Work: I wanted them to tighten a toilet because I was selling my house. They ended up pulling the toilet and cutting a hole in my ceiling.
