They had to repair leaks in the same area several times; I found this suspicious. I requested an estimate for complete replacement of the pipes. It was considerably higher than other estimates, so I chose another company to do the work.
Description of Work: They repaired poly pipe leaks and sold me a service agreement. They came to my house and conducted a complete inspection as part of the service agreement and found no problems. Soon afterwards my hot water heater thermostat stopped functioning properly.

I would like to applaud Michael and Son Services for their stellar professionalism and the quality of their people and products!! I will be a customer for life after the fantastic experience I had working with the staff and technicians at Michael and Son! When you think of the stress and discomfort of not having a working air conditioner, the last thing you want to think about is how much a company is going to rip you off and provide sub-par quality. I am happy to say this was not my case in the slightest! I had Michael and Son Services come out previously and was impressed with them, even when I elected to not have any work performed at the time, the technician thanked me and I even received a thank you note and $25 gift card to apply to any future service. This is why I have referred them to my sister who had her air conditioner break down on her this summer. The technician repaired her unit and she was so impressed that she shared the name of who did the work with me when my air conditioner stopped functioning. The technicians name is, Nate Hoffman, and I was lucky to have him and Michael and Son Services is even luckier to have him as part of their team!! First, Nate placed a Michael and Son's door mate at my door before entering my home and also put on booties to cover his work boots. Nate asked what the issue was and then told me what he was going to do, and then went straight to work. After hours of work, Nate actually got my AC unit up and running but it was over heating and there we were losing cool air in the house. He said that the unit must have been damaged/contaminated when it was installed, because it was a good brand (refreshing to hear since most techs say your unit or appliance is builder grade!) and shouldn't have burned out after 6yrs when the 2nd unit is running just fine. The final verdict was that the unit had to be replaced. I spoke with Nate about the options and said that I was not trying to upgrade to something bigger and replacing my furnace in order to handle a larger unit, I just wanted to replace it with a good quality unit. I asked for Nate?s opinion and he showed me a book with the units which displayed the cost too, so you know it wasn?t just a number he made up in his head. We went with a Carrier Comfort Series, 13 Seer, final price tag (after 10% discount military/home protection program) was $3912 (included unit, coil, installation, and ground leveling for platform). I inquired with Nate about financing and he showed me how to go on Michael and Son?s website and apply, I did, and was approved in a matter of minutes!! I also spoke with Nate about protecting my unit and even my 2 nd existing unit. He explained their annual home protection plan that covers all of your units, plus there is an electrical and plumbing inspection done (I believe twice a year). This also includes free house calls and 10% off any services. I signed up!! It costs approx. $689 per/yr, and totally worth it!! I recommend to all who have a major appliance replaced and just to ensure all your appliances and electric and plumbing are operating properly. Nate called and set up the installation and then explained to me what to expect on installation day. I will write a separate review on the installation which was great! And the two installation technicians who came out were Pros!! I hope that Nate Hoffman will get the appropriate recognition for a job well done!! Thank you Nate!! This is one HAPPY customer!!

I woke up Saturday of a three day weekend to find the ceiling in my living room bubbling with water, right underneath the toilet. I got on Angie's List and started calling. Michael and Sons was the only service that picked up. They could have someone out that day, but couldn't guarantee a time since it was an emergency and I was put in the queue. A few hours later, as promised, Lawrence Smith called and said he was on his way. He suspected a broken seal, confirmed it and replaced it in short order. He was professional, courteous and nice to my animals. It was a huge relief to have this taken care of.

The experience was so dreadful that I'm not inclined to try again, even though I suspect that they happened to hire a complete incompetent who happened to be willing to answer the phone on Sunday. After hearing their slogan, "If you can't, we can -- Michael & Son(s)," nearly every morning on WRC NBCTV Channel 4 in DC, I had come to think of them as a reputable firm. Their online presence is respectable and they even had an inquiry page where I was able to solicit the condenser pan drain clearing that I sought. The unit requiring attention is part of a closed system which requires no service: Chillers on the roof supply hot and cold water, which heats and cools the coils in every residence throughout the building. An obstructed tube prevents the condensation from the cooled condenser coil from draining into the channel provided in the garage beneath the floor. I neither own nor have control of the structure beneath me, though standard access rules allow my condensation coil to drain through the basement/garage. After service was scheduled first for Sunday (which is permitted only in emergencies), the receptionist called back to ask that the unit be "turned off," so I explained the aforesaid to illustrate that there was nothing to "turn off." Corollary to that, I asked for service on a later date so that I would not have to get special permission from building management to allow service personnel to enter a secure area. The $89 consultation was rescheduled for Tuesday and I offered that it would be lovely if the technician could clear the drain on the first visit, but if for any reason they didn't want to do the work, I would like the cause of the problem to be documented for the building engineer so that it would not be discounted as malfunction from the slightly bent coil fins that scarcely even need combing. There was no way that I could "turn off" a building-wide system, and furthermore there was nothing to be "turned off," so the receptionist cancelled my appointment, feigning that it was in the interest of "saving my money." Never in my life have I ever spent more time trying to explain simple notions to someone who had so little need to know or understand it, and much less than that, I have not once had a receptionist cancel a service appointment because he failed to understand the business of a service technician.
Description of Work: Waste time on the phone, misunderstand all the details, call back for clarification, got the details of the repair wrong, misunderstood the kind of equipment involved.

Nate showed up on time and was very professional and personable. Prior to his inspection to the unit he offered several options to us if the repairs couldn't be made and was very conscious of cost. He was quick to diagnosis the issue and luckily he even had a conductor with him so our AC was fixed the same day!! He also filled it with Freon and inspected the other unit we had as well. We appreciated Nate's honesty and integrity ( rare qualities among some repair companies!) . Since we truly enjoyed our experience with Nate we signed up for the service plan for our entire home:) and I have even recommended him to my sister who needs AC work done. Overall, Nate provided excellent quality service!

I signed the contract last October, I did not get the generator turned on until July. It was kind of a fiasco. I didn't have any problems with the work, in fact the final inspection will be next week. The problem was that the estimate that I got from them, they totally underestimated what was involved in this particular job but they did have to contract price when they realized that they had to tear down a wall and move my electrical service in order to make it work. They did honor the contract. They did the job. They did everything they need to do. But, they did kind of dragged their feet because knew they were eating the job, a lot of it. They have great PR. When you sign the contract, they send you this neat little tin lunchbox shaped like a Michael and Son truck with all the proper markings and everything and you open it up and it's full of very good chocolate chip cookies. But, I could not feel that they gave my job the priority. I should have had it way before I had it. I think they were just dragging their feet because they knew they were eating quite a bit of labor on it. The mechanic who installed it was absolutely wonderful. It works, it comes on every Saturday. I'll probably never loose power again. I would give the guys who did the work an A for professionalism but administratively, they're a C.

They were supposed to come between 2:00 and 6:00 to provide an estimate on some work. I waited for them to come or call and they didn't do anything. When I called them the next day, today, they told me that I had been on their schedule but that the technician that they assigned couldn't do it. They offered to come today and again gave me a 4 hour window at which point I said that I was not going to wait one minute for them. Do not send anyone!

Oscar and Williams were EXCELLENT. The job was very professionally done, cleaned after themselves every step of the way. The have worked together long enough to anticipate what the other needed at any stage of the repair, and alwys had the tool/part ready.Oscar measured at least three times before every cut, and every thing was tested for fit before going to the next step. This is how its done, folks... Michael and Son are on the expensive side, but at this quality of workmanship, i can live with it.

It went terrible. I was in Iraq and my poor wife was back here in the states. They tried to get her to do a $8,000 system replacement and I told her not to do it. We had a reputable company come out 6 months latter (when I had finished a tour in Iraq), and they said nothing was needed. We have not had any problems with the system and it was a new house. Now it is September 2013 and it is still working fine with routine checks (from reputable deales) saying it is fine. Isn't it terrible that they tried to take advantage of a poor woman whose husband was in Iraq? How low can you go? Never use this company!!!

I contacted Michael & Son for an estimate on a plumbing and HVAC job which was part of a larger home renovation project. Unfortunately my initial experience with M&S was a poor one. However they have made up for it. It started when I booked an appointment for the estimate in the 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. window on a Friday. I received a phone call at 5:00 p.m. from the dispatcher that the technician was running late due to an emergency call but they would still be coming to the house. The next call I received was at 7:30 p.m., the dispatcher said their technician was just finishing up a call and would be on his way to my house shortly. The last call I received was at 10:30. The dispatcher said the technician was on his way to which I replied it was too late that evening and they could cancel the estimate. The following Monday (after I a review here expressing my displeasure) I got a call from the head of their customer service department. The gentleman explained that what happened is not normal for M&S and they would like to make it right. I appreciated the call and set up a time for them to come back on a Saturday to give an estimate for an HVAC job. More to follow after the estimate is completed. FYI-Michael & Son charges a "dispatch fee" for their estimates. It's anywhere from $29 to $89 so if you're looking to compare several companies to shop for the best price on a job go with companies who offer free estimates. M&S completed the estimate and will be doing some HVAC work soon. They technician was very polite and professional. He covered his shoes with little booties before he walked in the house and he carefully explained everything as we talked through the estimate. I'm looking forward to have him back in my home to complete the job.

They showed up twice and then never showed. The plumbing guy was very good, he came out and gave us all the information, but the electric guy didn't come out. The electric guy came out once, saw what we needed, and then said that he will get in touch with us, so we waited almost a month, then I called, and got no response. Then I got a response from him one day, and said that he will contact us again, and that was 6-8 months ago. He told me that we needed another panel and he needed a go ahead from PEPCO. I specifically went to them, because I know the owner from church. I was very extremely disappointed with the electrician. We were extremely pleased with the plumber, although we didn't use him. He was very professional, he knew his job. I already knew some of this stuff as my dad was a contractor. The way he talked about things, and he went and looked around and said he could run a line from the main house, and you could tell he knew what he was doing, and what to do. We decided not to get the gas stove. He was creative, polite, knew his stuff and I thought his quote was not bad. I would use him if I had the need to.

I only used them for the diagnosis, which they diagnosed incorrectly. If I had used them to fix what they said needed done, they would have charged about $2,200. I ended up using someone else, who diagnosed it correctly, and charged less than $800. Michael & Sons also left a whole in my living room wall, which they wanted to use as an access point, instead of from my bedroom, which would have been closer. Luckily, the people I ended up using used the better access point and saved me alot of money. Because of Michael & Sons, I also had to pay $300 to fix the drywall in the living room.

I wouldnt recd using them unless u r desperate. My reg plumber was not avlble n I needed to fix a leak before the weekend. The plumber was punctual and the work performed has held up well. What I didn't like was the pricing and the use of scare tactics to get other work done. For example, they charged about 300 just to turn off the main water line. Really? Plumber then mentioned that ball valves on water shut off valves could bust n flood the house n offered to fix them for over 300 each. If you are forced to use them, be sure to get a competing quote and negotiate.

The price just kept sky-rocketing after I'd agreed to the original price. An hour and a half later I get a bill that should have come from a corporate lawyer or a brain surgeon for the hour and a half of work that he did. After talking to some other people about what the work should have cost, I wish I had laughed him out of my house. Will not use them again.

My husband and I had tried to snake out a drain and unfortunately snapped the snake off into this drain. We were unable to get it out ourselves, so contacted Michael and Sons for a free camera inspection to determine the location of the snake, at which time we would have them remove it. When they were done with their "free" camera inspection, we were told that we needed new sewer pipes all the way from our bathroom to the street, which would entail breaking up the floors in the bathroom and family room and digging up our landscaping in the front yard. All to the tune of $30,000!!! My husband called me at work to relay this info which made both of us sick to our stomachs because we don't have $30,000 laying around and would have to refinance our house to pay for this. We decided to take a step back and not have the work done at this time even though the technician really tried to pressure my husband into signing the contract immediately and also told us how dire our sewer issue was. We contacted another plumber who got the snake out of the drain for a couple hundred dollars and was nonplussed that Michaels had told us we needed all this additional work done. Later we found out they had told some acquaintances exactly the same thing and wanted to charge them $30,000 also! I find it unconscionable that they would dupe people like this. Oh..by the way, the $30,000 did not include the expense of replacing two floors and landscaping. If they were they only company in the area...I would never use them.

Previously, the techs this company's sent out have always seemed competent and confident?not cocky, but like they trusted their skills and experience. This time, the man they sent seemed completely baffled, like he'd never worked with an A/C unit before. He was on the older side?maybe in his 60s??and tried to make a lot of small talk. We just wanted our AC fixed. After TWO HOURS working on it, he was still basically scratching his head. I had to go to work (and I'd warned him an hour before I had to leave that I would need to go) and about 30 minutes before I had to leave he decided I needed a new thermostat. He could not have sounded less certain that this would fix the problem, and I felt the same, but he's the professional, right? He says he might not have the type of model we need in his truck, but that it will be about $450 if he does. (It comes to $385 after the discount for having a home care agreement.) That sounds outrageously expensive to me, but if it fixes the problem, fine. I tell him alright, and he immediately gets out his pad to have me sign. I ask what he's doing, and say I'm not going to sign to pay something before he even knows if he has the product. So he goes out to get it, installs it, and can't get the thermostat to work or the a/c to come on. I have to go, so I ask him to take the thermostat with him. He says no, and that he'll come back tomorrow and make it work. I REALLY HAVE to go at this point, so I say whatever and sign. A few hours later, I call the company to request that they send someone different tomorrow morning because this guy clearly has no idea what he's doing. They assure me it will be someone different. Who appears the next morning but the same guy? I call the company again while he's outside (I don't want to be completely rude) and tell them that I requested someone else, was promised someone else, and need someone else to come out. Because the same guy had already had another half hour to make it work, and nothing had been repaired. They can't get anyone else out until the next day. Argh. Another sweaty night. Not to mention that the guy had opened my unit, left screws and the metal panel on the floor and then just WALKED OUT leaving everything like that, never telling me he was going. I guess the company called and told him he was off the job, and he was p*****? So unprofessional. The new guy comes out, and he's much nicer and seems to have a better handle on things. But the issue is stumping him as well. After a little over an hour, he says he's fixed it. I can't feel any cold air coming out?the fan always worked, but the air it was blowing wasn't cold?but I figure it will just take a while for it to start cooling down. I call the company while the tech is there and tell them that I was wrongly charged for a thermostat, which was entirely unnecessary, and the tech from before took my old one. Someone there speaks with the new tech, who confirms that the thermostat was unnecessary. I'm told they will call me back. Later that day, I speak with someone who agrees that the thermostat was unnecessary, didn't solve the problem, and therefore should be fully refunded. I call a different company to fix the real problem with the AC, it works again, and all is right with the world. Right? Not quite.... Two weeks later and three calls later and the nearly $400 thermostat STILL hasn't been refunded. How much more of my time and energy does this company?who didn't accomplish anything in my home?expect to get from me? I will never use them again.
Description of Work: We've used Michael and Sons before and have a home care agreement with them. For the first time, we called them to fix our A/C unit. (Have previously used them to install a new water tank.) They were unable to fix it, but it took about a week to determine that, and cost us $400 for a new thermostat we didn't need.

About 6 weeks ago, we used Michael and Son to repair a drainage problem with our air conditioning unit. The first technician that they sent did not resolve or correct the problem. When we complained, Michael and Son sent out a second technician, Mr. Tim Le. Mr. Le fixed the proximate cause of the problem but did not necessarily identify other potential blockages in the drainage system. On 9 Aug 13, we again noticed a leak (which subsequently turned out to be a drainage problem) with our air conditioning unit. We contacted Michael and Son to schedule a repair visit. They told us the following: (1) Since it was over 30 days since their previous visit, this was not covered by any of their warranties and would be charged as a new visit. (2) They could not send a technician (Mr. Le) out until between Noon and 4:00 PM on Sunday, 11 August 2013. We agreed to the service window of 12:00 (Noon) to 4:00 PM on 11 August 2013, On 11 August 2013, here is the sequence of what occurred (or didn't occur): 3:05 PM - Received a call from Michael and Son saying that the technician was running late and was still on a call in Ashburn, VA. COMMENT: Ashburn, VA is 25 miles away from house and without traffic, the drive time is 35 minutes. 4:45 PM - We called Michael and Son to get an update and were told that the technician was still not finished with the call in Ashburn, VA. Am told that I am eligible for a 10% discount by way of compensation. 5:17 PM - We called Michael and Son to get an update and were told told by "Chantel" that the technician was "on the way to our house." 6:15 PM - We called Michael and Son to get an update. Chantel put me in touch with "Meagan in dispatch." Meagan said that the technician was still on the job in Ashburn, VA and that she would call me back with an update. 6:30 PM - Meagan from dispatch at Michael and Son calls me back. She says that the technician still has to do one more job in Ashburn, VA and that he will not likely be at my house until after 9:00 PM. She says that the she will ensure that a "manager" from Michael and Son will call me tomorrow (i.e., 12 August). I provide her with both my home and cell phone numbers. 8:20 PM - The technician, Mr. Tim Le, from Michael and Son arrives. He promptly diagnoses the problem as a blocked drainage line and takes action to clear the blockage. 9:00 PM (approximately) - The technician departs after I pay a bill with the following notations: Discount HVAC ($25.00) Flush Drain Line $163. 50 Diagnostic $ 89.00 Total Bill: $227.50 It is now 5:38 PM on 13 August which is well after when a "manager" from Michael and Son was supposed to contact me, and I have yet to hear from anyone. I pointed out to everyone I talked to at Michael and Son that the reason I contacted and used them initially was because of the reviews they had received on Angie's List. I also went on to note that I found the lack of responsiveness and willingness to live up the commitments made to me concerning the scheduled appointments was unsatisfactory. I pointed out that if did the same in my profession, I would be held accountable and that I was deeply disappointed with their performance and customer service. Other than a perfunctory 10% discount, all I was offered was apologies. This reminded of the practice of commercial airlines in overbooking flights; however, the compensation offered for overbooking was significantly less than what the airlines are compelled to offer due to legal requirements. Based on my experience, I will never use Michael and Son again, and will share my experience with my friends and colleagues. This has also caused me to question the reliability and accuracy of the reviews/recommendations contained on Angie's List.

I was very upset because the rate they charge to snake one drain was over $300.00. I thought that was way over priced. They gave me a 10% discount and an option to have my drains video recorded after I called and complained about the price being too high. For something that does not require much work I felt that was too expensive. They told me it was a basic drain stoppage so there wasn't additional work needed. They didn't have to isolate it or go through the home because that was done upfront. When I tried to get a price upfront before they came out they would not do that. I feel they should have been upfront and gave me the quote and then said if additional work was needed it cost extra.

The sink and toilet were really well installed. I am having some problems with the shower head and faucets. I am also having some issue with the trash compactor. I am going to call them back to check on these issues. They were very clean, and punctual. I do think they are a little pricey.
Description of Work: They put in a sink, toilet, installed a shower head, and faucets in the bathroom. They also installed a trash compactor in the kitchen.
