I called Michael and Sons because I have electrical, plumbing, and HVAC issues I need to take care of to sell my place. When I first called, the person on the phone said for she would have all three come out for a set price. The first person (HVAC) came out and was very professional and knowledgeable, but as the numbers for the work started added up drastically. I ended not using them and paid for the "diagnostic fee". I ended up using another HVAC company who charged 70% less for same work. The second person (plumber) came, but arrived 2 hours early so I could not get to him. The third person (electrical) came and I had to pay him a steep hourly fee for him to look at things. He seemed knowledgeable. He even tried to charge me the service fee which he managed to waive even after I spoke to him about customer service not charging me for that fee. The estimated work is adding up to $500 without the hourly fee for an estimated 2 hours of work. I called other company to get an estimate and that is currently 70% less than estimate. Despite the knowledgeable staff, I feeling very ripped off and will not use them in the future.

The M&S rep was very nice, looked over the entire gas line and commented about a few things they would do differently. In the end, none of those things were required for the job and he provided an estimate as requested. The estimate included: turning the gas off, removal of a single approx. 3' piece of pipe, removing the connection/shutoff on the stove end of that piece, cutting that piece of pipe to about 18" length, threading the bare end, reconnecting the stove end connection/shutoff, and turning the gas back on. The projected cost was $675! You've got to be kidding me! I declined to have the work done. I called Michael and Son to let them know of my disappointment. The first lady indicated she could understand my concern completely and offered to have someone call me back. I told her I didn't plan on waiting around the house for a return call and she asked me to hold. Another lady picked up and started on how I got a guarantee and maybe they could apply a senior citizen or military discount. I advised I considered 10% discount off a ridiculously high estimate and insult. She then asked what I thought would be a fair price; I advised under $200. She said she'd have the plumbing service manager call me back. We'll see if he does. I don't mind them making a profit, but $675 seems grotesquely high for a very small job. I can't imagine this taking longer than 1/2 an hour to an hour, no new parts and minimal work. I'd hate to see what a real project with Michael and Son would cost. I doubt I will ever call on Michael and Son again. Update: I spoke with the Plumbing Service Manager. He stated that they use a flat rate pricing structure and that accounted for their price, though he couldn't explain what that meant in this case regarding replacing one piece of standard length pipe with another piece of standard length gas pipe and charging $675. He did say he could talk with the technician and see if they couldn't lower the price a "little"; seems the Michael and Son technicians can estimate whatever they want and the Service Manager has no power to alter. By the way the piece of pipe needed costs $5.71 at the local Home Depot, a can of pipe dope costs $2.78 for a whole can, and the time necessary to do the swap out less than an hour. Seems Michael & Son is just out to gouge we customers for all they can.
Description of Work: Michael & Son provided an estimate to reduce the height of the gas pipe sticking out of the floor behind our new stove from about 20" above the floor to about 10" above the floor so the stove could be moved back against the wall and more flush with the cabinets.

When the line was first installed, I was told an inspector would be out to review the work. That never happened. Apparently it was up to me to arrange the inspection with the county. I haven't had any other contractors push this part off. So once the inspector did arrive, the installation failed. M&S came out a second time to fix the work. The inspection failed again. The third time was the charm and everything went ok. I had done a price comparison, and Michael and Son is far more expensive than others. I went with them because I didn't want to mess around when it came to a gas line install. When their work failed twice, it totally defeated the purpose of paying more money.

Installed furnace and a/c coil in wrong sequence, which contributed to mold/mildew problem in MBR. During installation also tore ducting and did not repair it, and left trash in attic. Ultimately had to have another vendor repair the entire project at a cost of an ADDITIONAL $4000. Disastrous experience; we will never have them in our house again.

Mr. Winston was my technician and he arrived at the appointed time. A complete tune-up of my gas heating system was performed, checked for carbon monoxide (none detected) and asked if I had carbon monoxide, which I did, and lastly, changed the furnace filter. In addition, he answered my question ( I always ask a lot of questions) to my satisfaction. Yes, I will use Michael and Sons again. Actually, I have used Michael and Sons since January 27, 2009 for electrical (major) and plumbing. bingbing

Over all I am please with the quality of work however there price point clarifies to me how they can afford to advertise so much in the Northern VA and DC area and be a corporate sponsor at various arenas. The cost of the actual hot-water heater was $1499.61 which is 3X the amount of a comparable hot-water heater at Lowes or Home Depot. Given the emergency situation I was left with little time or choice to refuse the service and or negotiate for a better price. The technician (sole person) did not offer me a choice of hot-water heaters. I would think that they are big enough to stock more than one type of 50 gallon hot-water heater. The price was the price or so I was told when I asked about other options. It was also surprising to me that they would send only one technician to complete such a job which involved removal of a 30 gallon hot-water heater and various pipe repair. Over all I'm happy with the service but to "stick-it" to the customer because of the situation and inflate prices does not show integrity in my book. I would call on them again but only to contain the situation and then I would go back through Angie's List to get others who could fairly bid on the work.
Description of Work: M&S came out for an emergency call late on Sunday night after the hot-water heater busted in one of my rental properties. They assessed the situation and drew up an estimate. The technician then stabilized the situation so the renters could still use the water in the home but would have to go with out hot water until the next day. They then contained the situation until they could come back the next day for the full on repair.

When the HVAC men came to check the unit he found it to be in perfect conditions, only checked the unit outside and said it would email the bill, that never came. Once I called the company they sent it by email with a list of things that were done, while he was in the attic I was also there and I did not see him doing anything to the unit. I called William and Son to express my concern and the supervisor told me he would call back after talking to the employee, he did call back and said his employee remembered exactly our unit and he was very impressed how good it looked. I told him I was not satisfied with the way they operated and he finally decided to send another technician the following day. The second technician found everything wrong, the unit is so bad that needs to be replaced, he found even the fuses in the condenser were the wrong type. $897 for new lever water valve, new washer machine faucets including the $236 for replacing the the hoses for the washer machine, the ones I had were brand new from Home Depo, flood safe but after he replaced the faucets the hoses did not work (?) and I did not have any other choice than to replace them for the ones he had in his truck. When he left we noticed that there was a leaking from the hose he said had the wrong extension, came back the following day to fix it. For the prices they charge, they should have an impeccable service, which was not our experience.

We have experience drain backup about every 18 months, usually at a most inconvenient time. The problem is a sewer line that does not leave the home at the proper angle, so there is buildup in spite of the fact that very little goes into the disposal. Michael and Son came on a Sunday, but later than expected, took longer than our usual plumber, and charged way too much, but we expected that when we called for someone on Sunday.

I contacted Michael and Sons and spoke with Michelle Wilson mid-day on Friday. I explained my situation to Michelle and within a few hours she worked miracles!!! She scheduled Plumbing for that same day and scheduled HVAC, Electric, and Handyman Services for the following day!! All of the Technicians called before their arrival and arrived within their designated time slot. I explained my situation and I reviewed with them each deficiency outlined in the Home Inspection Report that pertained to their specific area of expertise. They were all extremely knowledgeable, professional, and very honest. Each Technician clearly articulated whether the issue was a potential safety hazard and/or violated county or state enforcement codes. Based on their assessment, I was able to determine the deficiencies I was willing to remedy and more important feel comfortable with my decision. They even had the necessary tools and equipment on hand to fix the majority of issues I requested. In my opinion, Michael and Sons and the Technicians who serviced my home went above and beyond my expectations. Therefore, I personally want to thank Danielle Wilson - Scheduling Mike Megel ? Plumbing David Hubbard ? HVAC Gus Hagi ? Handyman Brenton Mullins ? Electric

We obtained 3 proposals for our new heat pumps. This process is extremely valuable for the knowledge obtained from each person that is trying to sell you the units. It helps you to know what questions to ask, as most of us don't know much about heat pumps. Michael & Son was our first proposal and the one we decided to go with. After obtaining the proposals, we asked Thomas to come back and did the final proposal. Michael & Son is the only one that provided detailed information in writing, as to the work that would be done. Two of the proposals only stated the models and unit numbers with the price. Sorry, for that amount of money, I did expect the details of what they were to include with the installation of the units. Michael & Son gave us the best price as well as some extras. Our Salesman was Thomas Dixon, he was great about explaining all the equipment and features available to help us make the best choices for our needs. Many options are available such as air cleaners, filters, thermostats, and more. Both units were installed in one day, the crew of 6 or maybe 7 were careful of our home, polite, cleaned up after the work and did a great job, it was a very long day for all of us. They did have to come back another day to complete a few missing items, this involved special air filters and the air cleaner that they failed to order with the original units. This work was completed as scheduled on October 8, 2013. One cannot expect perfection with such a large job, however, they came close, Considering the size of the job, I felt that they deserved an A rating. We would not hesitate to use them again or recommend them to others.

I contracted with Michael and Sons for my tenant. The representative said the technician would arrive between 10 am and 2 pm and would call before they came. Also, the technican was to call me prior to doing any work so I could approve. The technician showed up after 7 pm and performed work with no approval. Michael and Sons refused to accept responsibility for work performed withough approval. There was a lot of back and forth for days, hours, to obtain some kind of compensation. Finally they agreed to refund the money, they never refunded it so had to put a claim into the credit card company

Two technicians worked approx. 5 hours to replace the heat exchanger, which was installed 14 years ago but was under manufacturer warranty. Because I have a maintenance agreement with Michael & Son, they charged me nothing for parts or labor. We needed to have small handyman work performed in addition to A/C work. We called Michael & Son Services since they handle both of these. The first time I called, the answering service apologized for the longer than usual hold time, despite the fact that it was in the middle of the day (not lunch time) in the middle of the week. After being on hold for 15 minutes, I hung up. I called back later and was able to speak with someone after only a 5 minute wait time. The receptionist with whom I spoke was professional, but not overly friendly. She first transferred me to the A/C group, as their handyman department was completely separate. The A/C group receptionist was extremely helpful, friendly, and professional. He was able to schedule a Saturday appointment for me, which was ideal. He then gave me his direct line in case I needed to make any appointment changes. He then put me in touch with the handyman group. The handyman group receptionist informed me that they charge extra for weekend visits, which would be expected (as a customer, it would be nice for some of these service providers to follow suit of the barbers and take Sunday and Monday for their weekends, but it's understandable). I said ok, what appointment do you have during the week? They said that my area is only serviced on Fridays. Ok, I have time before going to work, a short lunch break, and after work. The receptionist informed me that they only do windows of time, so it would have to be 8:00 - 12:00. I informed her that I did not have the luxury of taking time off work just to wait around for a handyman to show up to give me an estimate on some work. Would she be able to nail down a specific time? After some negotiations, she gave me an appointment time of 8:00 a.m. Perfect! I could meet with the handyman before going to work. My wife then suggested that, since she would be home on Thursday, the A/C technician could come out then for the estimate and Saturday for the actual work. So I called the A/C receptionist back on the number he provided to provide the appointment update/request. He did not answer, so I left a message requesting a call-back. It is now a week after I left that voicemail and have yet to receive a return call. Then, a representative from the handyman group called late last night, the night before this morning's handyman appointment, to inform my wife that the 8:00 appointment could not be kept as scheduled. Instead they would be out anytime between 8:00 and 12:00. Uhhh.....no. So we called them back and cancelled both appointments. If we're having this much trouble (not much, but enough) before the first appointment even occurs, there's no way we are going to give them our hard earned money to potentially provide additional problems down the road. Note to Michael & Sons: A first impression goes a long way. You have some work to do to show your concern for customer service.

The original install was fine. However, WSSC inspection required a larger regulator. Once the new regulator was installed and the inspection was approved, The technician had to route the gas line from the meter to the generator to accommodated the larger regulator, thus causing what I considered a safety issue.
