Michael & Son is awesome. Had a small electrical problem (circuit breaker). Electrician Paul B., was professional, knowledgeable and just plain nice! Problem fixed in a very timely manner at a very reasonable cost. Paul took the time to explain to me exactly what was going on, and what to do if it were to happen again. Great company. Will definitely use this company again. Thank you!

Michael and Sons quickly sent out an extremely professional specialist to take care of it. He definitely deserves special mention--not only did he fix it, he checked in to see if it was working properly after his initial visit. His name is Ulice Kea...I would definitely request him anytime in the future I have any hvac problems!

My installation Tech, Joey Deslaurlers, called 15 minutes out as promised. He was early inside the 4 hour window of promised service. He listened to my desired work and promptly assessed my options and presented two options. He never "told me what he wanted to do", but presented great answers and concerns which enabled me to make an informed decision and save $$. I have worked with Michael & Sons before and am very, very satisfied. I would definitely recommend Requesting Joey for the install.

While the plumber that came was very professional and courteous, the price quoted for non-guarenteed work was ridiculous. The plumber said that if he started to fix it, something else would probably start leaking.
Description of Work: Our bathroom sink handle broke and we called Michael and Sons to repair it. They said that it would be $412 to repair the faucet, but there was no guarentee that it wouldn't get worse for fixing it. So, we chose to not use them.

Replace complete furnace and AC unit with installation of WIFI thermostat. Installation went well and was completed within the time frame promised; except some initial problems with thermostat internet connectivity. However Carrier later came out and fixed the problem. Michael and Son were always responsive and professional with any of my follow up phone calls or concerns. Overall i'm very satisfied and will be calling Michael and Son for future work.

I called Michael & Sons in June for an estimate to repair a gas furnace, I was given a quote to replace the igniter $260+&$89 service fee. I had M&S return in Sept once the weather started to turn to install the igniter, once the part was install the tech (same guy who came to give the est) tells me I need a control board and it would be $900 (including another $89 service charge). Why was this not noted before during the est. It was as if he didn't understand that the point of the estimate was to find out what it would take to make the furnace work!! I was able to order the control board for &$100 and a wonderful company AW Matthews installed it for $125!! Had M&S given a complete estimate in the first place, I probably wouldn't have looked any further, but I'm grateful that I did!! | |The ladies who wok in the office are AWESOME, but the tech leaves much to be desired. I was also told my a/c & water heater needed to be replace, which is completely not the case.

Michael and Son is the contact for work at my primary home and rental property. Whenever there are electrical and/or plumbing concerns, I or my property manager calls this company. They are very dependable and go the extra mile to ensure you are satisfied as a customer. I like to consider myself as a long-term customer. I have referred them to family members because they will get the job done and if for some reason you are unhappy you have a contact to call. Example: Contact for tidewater area is Mr. Gibson. I know if I have an inquiry he is the go to person and resolves the concerns. This company is customer oriented. I don't always agree with the prices, but I know based on my experiences with them, you call for services and they will deliver.

They were very professional and were very careful not to track dirt in my housOur only concern was the cost.e. They were the ones to let us know that the reason we were having problems with electrical units was because our electrical system was so outdated and not up to the required code since our house was built 40 years ago. We had wonderful service from them.

Sigh. I had used Michael and Son to do a few smaller projects in our home about a month ago, so when I ran into this new headache of a project, I thought I would call them again. Here is the situation: we have a Heatilator gas fireplace that was installed when the house was built. It works fine--never had a problem with it--but it always bothered me that it was a waste of heat because there was no blower to actually move the hot air out into the room. when the house was built, the construction supervisor told us that the fireplace was all ready to go, vis a vis a blower, and was wired to a switch in the wall separate from the fireplace switch--and that the 'blower' part was something we'd just have to install on our own because it wasn't included in the cost of the home being built. So fast forward a bunch of years and couple of kids later. While doing some other home improvement projects, I kept coming back to the blower. Went to a neighbor's home and looked at the blower she had in her fireplace (she paid to have one installed when it was constructed), took down all of the info and ordered the same blower. It was easy to install, but the 'glitch' was that it didn't work--wouldn't turn on when the fireplace heated up. And at first I thought it was a big User Error on my part. But on a whim, I got our industrial strength extension cord and plugged the blower into it, and ran it to another wall outlet near the fireplace--and what do you know--it works just fine, perfectly, plugged into that extension cord. So this left me with the Sherlockian belief that my problem was that the electrical outlet that is built into the fireplace under the firebox is not actually wired into the electical system of the house--contrary to what I was told by the builder. So I called Michael and Son and explained this whole situation to the customer service rep. That I believed the issue was that there was no electricity running to this electrical outlet (the blower requires no 'wiring,' it literally just gets plugged into an outlet) and that the switch in the wall must be a switch to nowhere. And that I needed an electrician to come out and look at this--tell me whether that was true--and give me my options for getting electicity to the outlet. I called on a Monday, Nov 11, and initially they were going to send someone to the house on Wednesday, the 13th, but I asked whether it could be scheduled for Friday, Nov 15, because I would be able to take the morning off of work to be there for the appointment. So I was scheduled for 8a-12noon on the 15th. I was given all of the caveats etc about needing to pay an $89 fee for a service call at the house if I didn't use them to fix the problem, etc. I got home on the 13th and had a voicemail at home (subsequently looked at my cell and realized I had a VM there too--called when I was driving home) asking me to call them, but didn't tell me why or the purpose of the call. Just said to call them, and that if I couldn't reach my original customer service rep, Crystal, that any other rep would be able to help me. So, not having any idea what the issue was, I called. This was obviously after Michael and Son's normal business hours because it was in the evening, so I couldn't talk to my original rep, but eventually got onto the phone with another rep. I told them I was returning their call. They looked me up in the system and said that they didn't know why they had called me. There was no note in the system. So I asked whether my appointment was still there for Friday and was told, yes, it was. They then told me they would take my information and tell the regular folks to call me the next day when they figured out why they were looking for me. They asked what number they should call me at on Thursday (14th) and I said to call my cell number, not my home, because I would be at work. Then comes Thursday. At around 3pm, I get a text message at work from my mother in law, who is visiting us from out of town. The phone rang at *home* and it was someone from Michael and Son and they told her to tell me that they called. (I got no call on my cell, as I had requested.) My mother in law knew I had an appointment for Friday, so texted me to let me know. I asked her if they told her why they were calling and she said no--said that all they said was, literally, for her to tell me that they had called. So, I then immediately called Michael and Son and got through the answering system and push-this-number maze. Got to a customer service rep and asked for Crystal. Put on hold and then told that Crystal had gone on break, but could they help me? So again, I told them that I was calling because I had gotten a message to call them, but no reason given for the call. I asked whether there was a note in the system, or anything in the system, about my appointment or why they were calling me. They told me that there was no note or reason in the system for why they were calling, but that my appointment was still there, and could I hold a minute to be transferred to the fireplace division...Woodburners?...I said that I could, but reminded them that I wanted to talk to an electrician and that my issue was not about the operation of my fireplace, per se, but rather the electrical outlet. They said okay and attempted to transfer me. I was on hold and then heard back in a few minutes that they were not picking up at Woodburners, but that they would take my information and tell them to call me back. I then urged them again to PLEASE call my cell phone, not my home phone, because I was at work. They said they would pass that along and get back to my right away. I heard nothing back from them on Thursday. Then comes Friday, date of my appointment, which is scheduled in the window from 8am-12noon, and for which I have taken time off of work. No one comes, no one comes, no one comes. (As an aside, this was also the date of my kids' family Thanksgiving lunch at school, so I had initially been hoping to be able to get through the appointment on the early side and make it to my kindergartner's lunch, which started at 11:50am.) So, at around 11:20a, I am realizing that no one has shown up yet--that I am not making it to school for the lunch (something which admittedly was a crapshoot to begin with), and I haven't even heard an update from Michael and Son about the status of the electrician. So I call Michael and Son again and ask about when i can expect the electrician. Then I get put on hold. Then they come back on and say, "umm, no one is coming. You needed to set up an appointment with Woodburners." So then I get angry and remind them that I have had at least a couple of conversations this week with Michael and Son employees about this appointment, and during each conversation I have repeatedly and specifically asked whether there was a problem with my appointment--and each time been told that there was no problem noted in the computer and the appointment was still scheduled. And that I didn't call to make an appointment with woodburners. I called Michael and Son and I made an appointment to talk to an electrician because that's who I wanted to talk to. Then I get put on hold again. Then they come back and tell me that they spoke with a supervisor and that I just have to talk to Woodburners because it isn't Michael and Sons' problem. Then I get shifted to Woodburners. And when they pick up I am told that I have no appointment, but that they can schedule one for me for THREE WEEKS FROM NOW. And they try to tell me that I was told I had no appointment--that they told that to my mother in law on the phone at my house--you know, when they called my house instead of calling my cell as I had specifically requested. And I know that they didn't tell that to my mother in law because she *knew* I was taking time off of work for the Friday appointment and it would have stuck out with her if they said that....AND I know they didn't tell my mother in law that because a) every other message I got from them never mentioned a problem with my appointment, it always said that they called and please call them--but no reason why--so why would they be any different talking to my mother in law?, and b) I got the text from my mother in law and texted with her about the call *right after* she spoke with them, and she was very clear when I asked whether they left a message or said there was a problem with the appointment, "no, they just said to tell you that they called." Now, I can handle missing my kindergartner's family Thanksgiving lunch at school because I was at the house with an electrician at the time--sure, I would feel Mommy Guilt about it, but that would be an unavoidable situation. But missing it for *this*?? For this complete run around, totally lacking in common sense customer experience? I don't think so. So I won't be using Michael and Son again, and I will be encouraging others in my neighborhood to avoid them too. In fact, I will be doing so at our HOA's annual community meeting this Wednesday.
Description of Work: I had a scheduled appointment for them to come to my home to figure out why the electrical outlet was not working in the bottom of my fireplace. (Fireplace was working just fine, but I had installed a blower that would work when plugged to an extension cord and into another outlet, but wouldn't work when plugged into the outlet in the bottom of the fireplace, which we had been told when the house was built was 'good to go' and wired to a switch in the wall near the fireplace.)

Once the technician arrived, things went smoothly. I originally called to have someone come in and look at it on a Friday. We are under their home care plan and so supposedly have priority when we do call. Bottom line, the technician did not show up on Friday. I called Saturday morning -- the office indicated they would send someone over. We waited around all day, made several calls and finally got a call at 9 PM from a technician who was an hour away. I told him not to come. I then called the office on Sunday and they finally sent over the technician who was originally suppose to be here on Friday. He looked at the our hot water heater, which was leaking and indicated that it needed to be replaced. We talked about several options, all of which required him to go and pick up a unit. Rather than sit around all day, I arranged for him to come back first thing Monday morning. He arrived promptly, having called me prior to let me know he was on his way, and was in and out in about an hour. He managed to get a larger unit than originally quoted, at a better price and we received money off for the issues over the weekend. Though it started off badly, the overall experience ended well.

I was impressed with the service manager and the installers. They were polite and professional. I recently had a yellow warning light come on and i called Michael and Sons about this, they timely came out and corrected the problem; checked the system and assured me everything was ok. Because of the quick service and positive attitude i feel comfortable with them and will use their services again if needed. As a matter of fact i just recommended to my sister that she should call them to install a generator for her.

PLUMBING/EXCAVATION: July 2012. Water pipe from main to house, jostled during August 2011 earthquake, burst at foundation to house: hole in foundation wall, explosion of water into basement, water shut-off by fire department from street. Following day plumber came to house, diagnosed problem, fixed other plumbing issues unrelated to call. Two-man excavation crew arrived following workday, hand-dug 10-foot deep trench through clay rock from street to foundation (approx 30-40 feet), replaced entire pipe and fittings. Massive 7-day job, done with backbreaking work and brilliant humor. Fabulous team kept me laughing through a 9-day period without water. | |PLUMBING: early Nov 2013. Long-term toilet leak, asked for same plumber who responded to water pipe disaster in 2012. He diagnosed large crack in toilet tank; replaced entire toilet. Efficient, instructive, clean. Great technician. | |HVAC: HVAC service 11/13/13 as part of maintenance agreement. Experienced, knowledgeable, delightful technician.
