The new design was great, however the execution of the work was of such poor quality that I had to call them several times to fix what they had done wrong. I would never hire them again and would suggest to anyone to use another company.

We had a new front entrance installed and needed an electrician to move two light switches for us in a hurry. We called Michael and Son and Sean arrived within two hours. The job was not an easy one as he needed to cut several holes in the drywall and the basement ceiling in order to move the cables to the correct position for the relocation of the new switches. He did this single-handedly and worked for approximately 4 hours. We were impressed by his professionalism and the way in which he thought out the best course of action. We would most definitely hire this firm again and I would push for Sean to do the work.

Incorrectly performed a Manual J Heating and Cooling Load calculation on my home. Calculation was need to evaluate worked performed by my home builder contractor. Furthermore, the individual added more square footage to the home, thereby miscalculating the Manual J. Ultimately I paid $250 for calculations I could not use to evaluate whether the system installed on my home was appropriately sized because of the comfort level issue my family was experiencing.

Turns out we did not have an automatic turn off value in the bathroom for the tub which he provided an access panel (hidden in the closet). The repairman walked my son and husband throughout the process and patiently answered any questions we had. The electrician was also open to answer questions after inspection services were complete. We were completely satisfied with the services provided and would definitely use this provider in the future.

They came out and did the job in about two hours. We have used them in the past for plumbing. I think they are expanding to cover just about every service around the home. They are very professional, all certified and licensed workers. They were on time and did exactly what they said they would. I think very highly of them.
Description of Work: They were the only people in this entire area that would install our stovetops. We bought it at home depot and they said they would send someone to install it but they never showed. After calling around Michael and Son was the only provider willing to do it.

The office staff was very responsive and extremely professional when I called. I shared that this was a rental property, the tenants could not be without water, and I needed services relatively quickly (as I would be leaving town). She she moved me to the top of the list. She also offered a free system inspection at the same time. They showed up as promised, and called me to provide the estimate and get authorization to start the work. I was a bit annoyed that the plumber would not give me the bottom line on the phone, without going through each element of cost, but I listened patiently. When he got to the bottom line, I clearly understood why he would not provide that information from the outset. Theirs was the third estimate I had solicited - all from Angie's list and reputable plumbing companies - and the price was double that of the next closest estimate! When I gasped at the price, the technician realized that he had made a strategic error, and began to back-track on the quote and provide more reasonable costs for specific items. But as we continued to speak, I realized he was using my sense of urgency to gouge me. I did not use them and will never call them again.
Description of Work: I had contacted Michael and Sons some years ago for some relatively minor plumbing work and, although the work was fine, their prices were so far out-of-line with other reputable vendors, I vowed to never use them again. I began to see them in the neighborhood so I decided to try them again for an overall evaluation and estimate for some plumbing work.

We had a terrible time with them. They have advertisements on television. They drive around in blue trucks. They are everywhere, and I think that's part of their problem. They have grown so large. Their plumbers they send out are not all fully licensed. On the toilets that another company came to repair, it's Michael & Son that really messed them up. I had to go all the way up to the top to get somebody out here. A guy would come and say that it was fixed, and then it wasn?t fixed. They tried to put the blame on us. We just kept going up the ladder. I would never have Michael & Son come into my house for plumbing, heating or any service they offer. I would not let them set foot on my property. They were not inexpensive. I asked them if they were sending licensed plumbers. They said that what happens is these guys try to go in business for themselves, they can't make it and then they come to Michael & Son. They were dodging me on answering. I talked to some people at other plumbing companies. They said that Michael's has gotten so big that a lot of their guys are still in training and that they are not licensed plumbers. Whoever owns this outfit has kept enlarging it so much that the quality of people coming into work there has gone down. We had an electrician, and the electrician has now messed up things that our lamppost does not come on. We are going to probably have another company come out and figure that out. We just kept getting a run around from the people on the phone. This guy who is supposed to be one of the top plumbing people came out to our house. He said that they sent someone and that everybody always liked that person. I said that I didn?t care if I liked him or not and that I want somebody that knows what they are doing in fixing our toilet. They kept sending out three or four different plumbers. Finally, they did deduct something from the bill. I don?t believe that their people really know what's going on. They spend a lot of money out there on their marketing. We see their trucks running all over the place; they are all over Northern Virginia. But they won't come here again.
Description of Work: We used Michael & Son Services Inc to repair a toilet that overflowed. We continued to have problems after they came. It was a matter of trying to get that fixed. We had an electrician, and the electrician has now messed up things that our lamppost does not come on. We had a service agreement with them for our heating and air conditioning, and we broke the contract.

Michael & Son's master electrician, Isidro Marcia , and his trainee exceeded all of my expectations!!!!! They came to the house on the appointed day and time. I explained I was putting my house on the market and had an electrician switch out all of my receptacles in the house. I discovered one was not working at all, and I needed Michael & Son to take a look to find the problem. In further conversation with Isidro, I was advised that the former electrician should have told me that GFI receptacles are needed in certain locations in the house to pass the inspection when the house sells. Isidro went though the entire house checking for potential problems that might cause my house to fail the inspection, and brought the house up to code. I am now confident that I will not have anything to worry about thanks to this wonderful electrician. I highly recommend Michael & Son to anyone who would like great service and quality work. .
Description of Work: fixed outlet in living room, replaced closet light, installed 5 new GFI receptacle plugs in the kitchen,2 bathrooms, and outside plug to bring up to code. Installed 2 new breakers in electrical panel box, and did an inspection to make sure that all electrical in the house was up to code.

I've used Michael & Sons several times and am always pleased with their service. When they performed my furnace tune up last December I noticed soon after that my hybrid heat system wasn't set quite right. A second crew came out immediately and spent more than an hour diagnosing the problem with the system setting and correcting it. Since having them come in my electrical bill has been significantly lower because FINALLY my gas heat is kicking in when it is supposed to! I was really pleased by the service, the technicians, and the company. A++++!

(Skip to the bottom for the update.) My HVAC died on a Sunday; the bad electrical burning smell was in the house, after I returned from errands. I opened the windows to let out the odor, which of course caused more heat loss. We had a lot of snow in January and February. Gene came out Monday morning. $89 later, he had gotten the blower back on and provided a written quote for the HVAC/heat pump, and I decided to jump into the electrical work too. And within 12 hours, it died again. We scheduled the work for Thursday. We had a bad snow storm, so Miguel and Abye actually came out Friday. First thing, they shoveled a path from the driveway to the backyard. It was so cold. They were at my house for 12 hours: installed a 15 SEER Ruud heat pump in a different location, a Rudd communicating air handler, 15 KW heat pack, Air Knight purification system, replaced the chemical in the system, and took away the old. They minded my 2 cats and made sure they didn't escape. There was a lot of mud in the backyard, and they were very careful to catch it on drop cloths and with shoe booties.Total cost $9,589. They were very professional, tidy, respectful, and considerate. The new thermostat revealed a difference in paint jobs on the wall, and Miguel very kindly offered a larger size cover from his car that hid the spot. A week and a half later, a different team came for the power. Olmar and his colleague dealt with the power issue. This was the original 200 A panel in the house and while it had not caused any problems I had been concerned about it. There are some horror stories about Federal Pacific panels. Gene had explained the electrical side of Michael and Son was relatively new. Total cost $2,100. After signing the contract, I was informed by some colleagues this was far too much. This team was again terrific. They were at my house for about a half day. Olmar also explained that the quality of Federal Pacific Panels had decreased towards the end of their lifetime, but the earlier models had better quality. It included 10 years parts and labor for the entire system and compressor parts. If something goes wrong with the equipment, I am a priority customer. I had asked Gene about permits for replacing the panel during our first conversation. Gene said Michael and Son would take care of permits and scheduling inspections. I called back after the electrical work was completed (to the electrical dept) regarding an inspection and the woman I spoke with also assured me they would handle it. Over 2 weeks have gone by and I haven't heard back from anyone whether the permit/inspection are needed at all. I will follow up with the county. Update: I reduced my rating for this job, now that I have finished the permit process and inspection. It took over 2 months to get the permits after-the-fact for the electrical panel and heat pump fan. I feel the company lied to me about getting the permits done prior to the work because they didn't have them either time for the electrical and mechanical work. They lied to me that "someone" was taking care of it. There is no possibility Michael and Son would have completed the permits unless I had pestered them. I had to bug them for the electrical permit, and after a couple of weeks it arrived at my house. However, it became clear Michael and Son's permit dept has no clue what would require a mechanical permit. It took over 4 weeks, believe it or not (!!!) to bug them enough to get my mechanical permit. After the back and forth so many times, I was very frustrated. I actually gave them the phone number to the inspector's office in Prince William County and asked them (very nicely) to discuss it amongst themselves. Not surprisingly, Michael and Son's permit dept called me back and said, Guess What! Yeah, they were clueless. I was disappointed, but ultimately they got the mechanical permit and the inspector came out. I was very glad to have both permits. This length process is why I gave them a C for responsiveness. After both the electrical and mechanical inspections, Michael and Son and to send someone out to fix something. They were minor things like having too big a breaker for the heat pump fan (which was really OK) and checking off the technical details on the HVAC unit, itself (more of a longer term maintenance question). DO NOT LET THEM START THE WORK UNTIL THEY HAVE THE PERMITS.
Description of Work: Replaced my 1970s HVAC, heat pump, thermostat, and the 1970s Federal Pacific electrical panel to include bringing it up to code. Installed a whole house surge protector.
