I highly recommend the Home Care Agreement with Michael & Son Services. They have made a few trips out to "fix problems" I was having with my HVAC. I place that in quotes because at least 2 of the trips were issues that I could have prevented. One being a closed damper causing my unit to overheat and go into safety shutdown, and another was a tripped condensation drain EZ Switch that was only tripped due to cleaning it. Other occasions were to replace a thermocoupler, install and attic fan, and HVAC check-ups. Did I mention all trips had a knowledgeable and courteous technician, who was prompt, efficient, and thorough, all covered under the cost of the agreement? I definitely will be renewing my plan, and you should too.

To their credit,I did speak to a manager who was able to knock it down to about 4700 but that still was pretty egregious. They were very professional and courteous. Unfortunately, the weren't very affordable.

The company cause secondary damage to a dry wall repair. They were unresponsive until I filed a civil complaint, which was responded to by Qais Noor an accountant with the company. In response, I withdrew my claim to sort out the well documented issue amicably. After I did this, M&S and Qais became not only discourteous but he was more interested in inciting a contentious and non-constructive outcome. Nevertheless, I moved on. I attempted to engage them for another matter to learn they marked their records to add the extra step of engaging Qais before issuing a time, which now creates a 10 minute hold each time I call. Frustrated, I asked Qais if I would always go through this process to secure an appointment to which he replied, "yes, especially customers who go around suing us randomly." This is a great example of the lack of professionalism and constructive problem solving he clearly lacks. Overall, the company tends to be professional, except when holding them accountable for work. Ultimately, I could afford to take the loss I encountered from the secondary damage caused by their work and, despite this positive outcome for them, they continue to offer poor and ALWAYS more expensive service. I was okay with paying for the service because I thought they stood by the work. Please try Spartan Plumbing and Heating instead!!! Always!

We had an emergency issue with our kitchen drain which clogged up entirely, sending dirty, food-filled water into our sink, and this happened in the middle of having dinner guests. I called Michael and Son, and they were able to have a technician/associate come the next day, a Sunday. I received a call 15 minutes before the appointed time from the technician/associate who let me know that he was en route and would be arriving on time. (He did.) He was able to assess the situation immediately, and he laid out all of the options and costs very clearly for me. After settling on the disposer model, Troy got to work immediately to fix the problem. Not only did he clear the clogged drain, but he also installed an access pipe for future use, and he installed the new disposer. He was extremely professional and very efficient. The job took quite a bit of time, but that was because Troy was so attentive to what he was doing. I would not hesitate to recommend Michael and Son in the future for my plumbing needs, and if I could request Troy (Coffey) again, I surely would. It was a superior job all the way around!

They failed to show up for the appointment and did not call. We had to call Woodburners Two who rescheduled the appointment. The only explanation was that they got behind. When chimney cleaners did show up on the second try it was Nitco Chimney Sweep. They vacuumed the firebox and went up on the roof very a very brief time. They said they could not clean it because code now requires a stainless steel insert. They were happy to try to sell us that for $3,500. We understood why they would not clean it but they still charged us $289.00 to vacuum the firebox. The job invoice was from Michael and Sons. We called and emailed several times ti try to get some of our money back. Finally after nearly a month we were told that we would not be getting any money back and that the charge was for an inspection. They were not up on the roof long enough to do a thorough inspection. Bottom line, I would not recommend any of these three companies. We feel totally ripped off.
Description of Work: We contacted Woodburners Two to clean our wood burning fireplace which had been purchased from them a number of years ago. Apparently Michael and Sons does their work now. They in turn subcontracted out to Nitco Chimney Sweep. All of this was not disclosed to us at the time we placed the job order.

The details are as follows. We have used Michael & Sons for other work in the house and they have previously been fantastic. One day, we noticed a water stain in a bedroom ceiling. I went into the attic and saw that there was a leak near a vent and after a little research discovered that this isn't something you just caulk and forget about. My first attempt to call Michael & Sons handyman services, ended without an appointment. They were heavily booked and their first availability was over a week later and I was going to be traveling. I spot checked with some other providers listed on Angie's List and they were all busy too so it must have been a popular time for roof issues. When I got back from my travels, I called M&S again and asked for an appointment. They told me they had availability a couple of days later and established a time window for arrival. I took the day off of work so I could be there and waited for their arrival. At the end of the appointment window, my wife called in and asked when we should expect someone to arrive. They told us that they would contact the team and have them call us. I don't believe we were called and that my wife called back again. She was told, they would be there in 20 minutes. When all was said and done, the two guys arrived about an hour and fifteen minutes after the end of the appointment window. I wasn't happy but what do you do, they were there so I showed them where I was having difficulty. A little detail about the two guys. They both wore jackets, one with Trulio name tag and the other with Ismael. Not sure if that was really their name as my wife and I thought one called the other by a different name. Either way, the one labeled Trulio was the guy in charge. He seemed to thoroughly inspect everywhere upstairs to look for any possible other areas that were issues. Ismael spoke absolutely no English. At one point during our session, I had to pull out a piece of paper and a pen and draw pictures for Trulio because his English was too low for us to communicate back and forth. I'm not judging their skills based on this, just saying it's frustrating when you're trying to communicate and can't do it effectively. When they went into the attic, Ismael went and retrieved a flashlight for Trulio. It didn't work and they ended up borrowing mine. Trulio seemed to take lots of photos, which I thought would be used for the estimation. Apparently, while Trulio was in the attic, he moved the insulation to the side to take photos. He didn't return the insulation afterwards. What we experiencing previously, was that water would drip down from the leaky vent, onto the insulation and most of it would be absorbed by the insulation. While we waited for an estimation, more rain happened and the water was now dripping directly on the drywall for the ceiling in the bedroom. Needless to say, it started bubbling and I put a small hole in the ceiling to let water drain into a bucket. That hole has gotten bigger and the drywall is in bad shape. I'll probably have to replace it and repaint. My wife called M&S to ask where our estimation was. They said that people would call us back to give us the estimation and to also understand our concern about the experience with the team. Apparently, this would be two different people and two different calls. Neither one occurred. My wife called back again, complained vociferously. This time, she talked to someone who asked if we would like to have another team take a look. She said no, and asked for a refund on the $250 we paid for the estimation. I figured that was a break as technically, they caused more damage to my house than assistance. Two weeks later, I logged into my credit card site and there is still no refund. I realize bad things happen from time to time when working with service providers but the odd thing here is that M&S is a substantial enterprise. I can understand a small startup having difficulty with taking of a bad experience. I can't understand why such a large organization is so dysfunctional. So save your money, and avoid their handyman services. It's fraught with peril. Hopefully, the other services are still decent but, because of this, I won't be using them for anything else. Thank you for your time and reading this far.
Description of Work: The provider was approached to provide roofing repair. They sent out a team to perform an inspection for estimation and created more problems for us. They never followed up with the estimate for repair. When contacted, they admitted they could not find the information obtained for an estimation and agreed to refund the money paid. Two weeks later, the money hasn't been credited back.

Michael and Sons are a large company. It was a little difficult reaching and communicating my needs. The technition was late to the appointment. They were able to make the repair quickly and that was great. However, the cost was very high. The driver quoted the price and looked for the approval. I did not have the opportunity to really price shop and that was my error. After the work was completed I check the material costs and asked some other plumbers the range of installation. I think Michael and Sons over charged by 30%. They have a right to charge what they feel is fair and it is my job to decide if this is a value. With that said, be very careful with their quotes.

The estimate was professionally done and provided in writing. The estimate fell squarely in between 2 other bids. The completed work met the estimate exactly. They started and ended on time - the inspection passed the first time. But most notably - they repaired the main water line without digging up my entire front yard. That would have ruined 15+ years of ground cover growth, the cherry tree and shrubs. They used a technology that none of the other bidders had to bore a hole underground. They were creative in how they used it because the space from the line to my house was just meeting the minimum length needed to bore the hole. I didn't lose any landscaping in the front yard - they didn't end up digging a hole anywhere except the sidewalk - which any of the bidders would have done. They did an excellent job on the inside work. Put down protection for my hard word floors and carpeting. Because the job spanned a weekend, they put up a protective barrier to cover the sidewalk hole. There are a lot of children in my neighborhood - and the hole fascinated them. The barrier worked to protect them. The finish work on the sidewalk was done cleanly and they replanted grass on the strip between the sidewalk and the parking spot. I couldn't have asked for a better job. Every other house in my neighborhood that had this leak lost their front yard and had to start over. This company has a division that only replaces water lines - they are a very efficient and professional team. I highly recommend them.

I tried to get an estimate for troubleshooting a light fixture that isn't working and they wanted over $200, just to troubleshoot. This didn't include fixing the problem. I should've not even had them come out. I don't trust contractors who won't give a free estimate and this just confirms it. I had to spend over an hour listening to sales pitches about maintenance programs before I even got the price of the work. I had other work that I wanted done also and they wouldn't even give me an estimate, they would have to email it to me. Ridiculous.

After a lighting strike near my home, I noticed some unusual electrical issues. I called and scheduled an appointment with Michael and Son. Brent Mullins arrived at my house a bit later than he said. We called Woodburners Two (now owned by Michael and Sons, but we didn?t know that) for service on our gas fireplace, purchased from Woodburners about ten years ago, because the pilot would not light. We were automatically directed to Michael and Sons, but did not at first know we were not dealing with Woodburners. A Michael?s technician came out promptly on 9/25/2014, and determined that a thermocouple insert was required and would have to be ordered, he would put that in the system immediately on return to the shop. Weeks passed with no contact from Michael and Sons. Frequent phone calls can be summarized by: being put on hold for close to an hour; dropped connection; or, most frequently, being told ONLY Tania could help because she had the responsibility for Woodburners Two calls; she would call back that afternoon or first thing tomorrow. During several weeks she Never called or accepted our calls or returned a call. We felt that Michael and Sons had taken the $99 diagnostic fee and had disappeared. I found a link on the Michael website to send a query, and used that mechanism to state our problem of lack of service and responsiveness; we directed it to Michael?s managers, indicating that Tania was clearly the one not responding, and other staff level individuals apparently could not get her to do so. I did not hear back from management, but received an email from Tania saying she was ?at the mercy of the vendor? for the part and that it had been ordered October 1 (a week after the technician said he would put it in the system for ordering). What an apology! She did cc two individuals who I took to be her managers, but they did not contact us themselves either. When more time passed with no further contact I called and insisted on speaking to either of those two individuals since as usual, the response was Tania would call first thing tomorrow. I spoke to Steve Menacho October 21, who apologized and said he would check. He called back later that day to say they had the part!! And it could be installed the next day. Did they have it all that time? No, no, an order had been cancelled. When was it cancelled? Not clear. If true, there is no system for directing available parts to orders. Whether true or not, there is clearly not any system for following up on orders, no sense of customer service being at all important, and no supervision of staff who have contact with customers. So, a month after our initial call, the part was installed and the fireplace works. Also, in fairness, they applied the diagnostic fee to the cost of maintenance and cleaning, which I agreed to do because the technicians could do it on the spot and they seemed competent. But I would never use Michael and Sons again because clearly they do not think their business has anything to do with fulfilling their promised services, nor informing the customer of any delays in their ability to do so. I should not have to make a fuss to management and make statements about the quality of specific individual's services to get something done after many many calls being ignored. And what gives with only one unresponsive staff person dealing with a business ( Woodburners Two) which Michael?s has purchased? Is it the stepchild part of the broader business?

They're a bunch of thieves. It took them four months. They kept saying that the engineer couldn't find the place or he lost his notes, one thing after another. I finally said, look, if you guys don't call me and let me know I'll find somebody else but I need to get this done. The guy's name was Michael, I don't know if it was Michael of Michael & Sons, probably it was just a supervisor, he said I'll have a proposal to you by Friday. Literally, I fell off the chair and spilled my coffee, $47,700. I had the whole thing done by a local boys up there by just under $8,000. I wouldn't deal with them again in my life.

Used these guys a few times. The first time the technician was awfully nice, thoroughly explaining things and giving me some sort of discount. I fell for it and called these guys for two other jobs. One job was to replace the AC capacitor which was way overpriced. Then I scheduled just a routine spring maintenance but there was a trainee there and the trainer wasn't much better. They wound up not catching something that wound up in flooding of the utility closet floor with the AC on most of the hot summer days which spilled into the bathroom behind it. Since then i have not used them, and i don't plan on using them again.

Not good. We had trouble last year when they had to come out three times before fixing an issue with the pilot light. I thought i would try them again. For 200 dollars, all the service man did was to clean things out and turn on the pilot light for the first time this season. But what happened last year happened again this year: The pilot light would go out after about 15 minutes. I called and at least the guy came back out that same day. He finally called the person who is the expert on such fireplaces -- turns out he is more into heaters and AC. That person said to check to see if something was loose and it was very loose. He tightened and so far it is OK. But why don't they send out the real fireplace person in the first place. They did not charge us for the second visit but it still is annoying.

NOTE THE UPDATE BELOW I contacted Michael & Son based on reviews from Angie's List and set up an appointment for someone from the Remodeling Dept to look at my job. The lady who set up the appointment told me I'd need a separate person to estimate costs for plumbing, so I set up that appointment also. Both showed up on time, looked at the job and promised to get me a proposal ASAP. (Note: one replied quickly- the other never got back to me.) However, they also told me that they respectively could only address Items 1 and 2. I'd need to have two other people come out and provide estimates for the electrical and heating work. Also, they could not combine their costs into one document. This meant that I'd have to deal with 4 separate proposals to determine the total cost. Even worse, there would be 4 separate contracts, each with its own worker(s) and pricing. I'd be stuck with coordinating the work among the 4 groups. I wanted a turn-key job with a single person responsible, not a free-for-all among 4 workers. Michael & Son seems to be a good-sized company, so it surely must be interested in projects which require integrating skills from different groups within the company. However, I got a strong message that they expected me to take responsibility for defining each part of the job and managing the interfaces between the 4 groups. It would have been like hiring 4 separate contractors to do what was really a very simple job. UPDATE: As a result of the above review, I had a discussion with a manager at Michael & Son. The short story is that company really is set up to have the workers who would actually do the work come out and estimnate the costs, and they believe this is the best approach. It does have two obvious advantages- the work is costed by the actual person who will be doing it, and it allows the customer to meet the specific workers ahead of time. The down side is that I would have had to schedule 4 separate meetings with employees of Michael & Son to get a complete estimate, and I would have had 4 contracts to deal with. The company I finally chose sent out two senior people to do the estimate, and one of them is overseeing my project. This is what I wanted. The original grade of "F" which I assigned to Michael & Son was based on my assumption that they had made a serious mistake in their approach to my project. That turns out to not be the case- they followed their company protocol of having each work area costed separately. I don't like this, but others might. I have therefore upgraded my rating from "F" to "C". Since one of the 2 Michael & Son employees with whom I met never even got back to me with his cost estimate, I'm not comfortable with a grade higher than "C".
Description of Work: This review is based on a proposal rather than actual services. We selected a different contractor for the reasons below. The project was to create a room in an existing space in our basement and provide a hook-up for a washer and dryer. The job involved 4 elements- (1) Remodeling (dry wall, painting and floor covering); (2) Plumbing (hooking up the washer to existing water and drain pipes); (3) Electrical (adding outlets and lights in the new room); and (4) Heating (putting a heating outlet into an existing duct for the new room).
