The person I found on Angie's List is the eletritian and we used Michael & Son Services Inc. The cost depends on the work and for the electrical work it cost almost 2000 dollars. Overall that experience was great. They were just very professional and also clean. That was the first time I used them. I think it was a fair price.
Description of Work: The last time I used Michael & Son was maybe 9 months ago or a year ago. I got a new line from the eletrical panel to the kitchen.

Here's what happened: Two guys (very professional) came over, tore out the carpet padding and baseboards, set up a big dehumidifier and fans, did mold and mildew treatment, and left. This was only in a 6ft by 8 ft area. They came back a day early and picked up the equipment. -- $2,200. I should have went to an equipment rental place and done it myself. Lesson learned. The basement still smells like mildew. When I called back about scheduling to get the carpet padding and baseboards installed, and to get the drywall fixed, they said that I was not in the service area for those jobs. I live in the middle of Baltimore. If they can send techs out to do the first 1/3rd of a job, why can't they send out people to see it through to the end? So, my basement is in disarray -- carpet has no pad, baseboards are gone, furniture out of place, holes in drywall, and it still smells. They will not send anyone out to finish it. So, for about an hour and a half of labor and and incomplete job -- $2,200. Use someone else.
Description of Work: I called Michael & Son because of a burst pipe and water damage in my basement. They said they would take care of the job.

Ok, I had never used Michael & Sons, but everyone said they were great and here I am in the middle of winter and my furnace stopped working so I called them on Friday and they first sent me an email and said they could not schedule an appointment until I sent them a credit card authorization signed for $89. It's freezing so of course I got this back to them immediately. They then called back and said they could not get anyone out till Monday between 8am and 12pm. Monday at 10:30 their van pulled up and this guy came in and said I needed a new inducer as well as another part that together cost $1100. At this point he started telling me how old my furnace was and that it didn't make sense to waste $1100 on a 20+ year old furnace and that I really should just have it replaced and that he could do it tomorrow for $4200. I told him I would have to think about it. Then I went online to Amazon and found the parts he said needed to be replaced for $125. That included overnight shipping. WOW!!! I understand about markup. Even 100% markup would be completely understandable, but what this guy did was obscene. He completely took advantage of the fact that I had no heat in the middle of winter to try to scare me with an outrageous repair cost in an attempt to sell me a new furnace. This after I told him I need it fixed soon because my 4 year old daughter was coming home in a few days Wow... So slimy. It felt like a used car sales man. Then when I was walking him out he started looking at a motorcycle in my garage and asked me if it was for sale. This guy was a total scumbag. I will never use Michael and Sons again. His name was Albert or Alfred or something and If he is reading this I have video surveillance so stay AWAY!

The Master Electrician Brent was very personable and offered free advice on other issues throughout my home such as my refrigerator (water not dispensing) at no extra cost. After a detailed home electrical inspection, Brent suggested my home needs an additional $4,000 in repairs/upgrades. All good recommendations, but the price of this service has inspired me to become more of a DIYer in the future. Youtube videos show you and talk you through how to do most of what I had done and some of what Brent recommended for the future (like replacing smoke detectors and electrical outlets). For those who have little to no electrical experience, I would recommend this company and especially Brent to take a thorough look at your home. Many builders take shortcuts in electrical wiring that are often missed during the pre-purchase home inspection.

This was an extremely disappointing experience. Kevin Lewis from Michael & Son quoted us $1,900 to replace an aging water heater. The installation went fine and the heater was in working condition. However, the heater failed inspection because the chimney vent (to which the new water heater was attached) was not up to code. After repeated back-and-forth with the local manager, Rami Sayegh, we were referred to a third party contractor to complete the work. That contractor installed a new chimney liner, which cost an additional $1000. At no point did Michael & Son advise us that we would need to update our chimney liner for the water heater in order to pass inspection. It seems like Michael & Son just wanted to our business for the new water heater. (We were later told that the "plumbing" and "chimney" departments are entirely separate and don't advise each other on problems like this). The most frustrating part was the customer service. Mr. Sayegh was courteous, but he repeatedly gave us the "run around." We had to stay home from work on at least 5 occasions, only to be told that we would be best served by having someone other than Michael & Son finish the job. When we requested a discount or voucher we were told that Michael & Son was not responsible for the added cost because it was only responsible for the water heater (despite the fact that the water heater that Michael and Son had installed failed to pass inspection). We are considering legal action. Stay away.

I picked Michael & Sons because I believed that they'd coordinate between the handyman and plumber to get a burst pipe fixed cheaply and quickly. Instead, I feel they hit me with a bait and switch. The plumber didn't plan his work very well, although he was technically competent. He suggested that I fix the burst pipe by rerouting it on an exterior wall, and I asked if he would be able to fit the pipe and insulation within the drywall. He assured me he would, only to "discover" that the insulation wouldn't fit once he'd put the pipe into place. Similarly, he planned on putting a valve in with the shutoff running vertically, so that my access panel would not close when the valve was closed. When I pointed out to him that this would require my access panel to be open all winter when I winterized my pipes, leaving my house cold, he recognized that maybe this wasn't a good plan. I had to watch him like a hawk to make sure his half-measures wouldn't cause problems. As it turns out, the pipe he installed in the wall wasn't straight. As I said, awful planning. The real problem, however, was the drywall guys. I'd told M&S that we needed the hole patched promptly. The plumber was supposed to call the drywall guys, give them a picture of the job, and tell them what they'd need to do to get the wall fixed the next morning. I'd asked the plumber what I should expect for drywall, and while he wouldn't quote me a price, he said not much--less than the plumbing work. The drywall guys arrived, tracked mud all through my house, and promptly told me that (a) they didn't have the parts (aluminum-backed drywall) that they needed to fix my wall and (b) it would cost over $1,100 to patch the drywall if I wanted it done that day--otherwise, I could have a cold hole in my wall for a week because their schedule was full. (That was after I bargained them down from $1350!) Oh, and they'd charge me for putting insulation around the pipe that the plumber hadn't been able to insulate--even though I'd paid for "insulation" on the pipe that the plumber thought he could install and then couldn't. There followed a very unpleasant conversation with a Michael and Son's phone technician who told me that she couldn't reschedule anything unless I agreed with the price--and even then she couldn't guarantee when the work would be done. I didn't really have a choice--given the timing, I needed the fix that morning. The larger hole was, to be fair, fixed competently. However, an area of drywall that was also supposed to be repaired is now (a week later) crumbling, and the paint flaking off. I now feel like a fool for paying much more than the plumbing job was actually worth, and trusting Michael & Sons techs and staff when they assured me it would work out before the work started. The whole point of using Michael & Sons was the perception that they'd communicate internally and I could trust them to do the work well, making their price premium worthwhile. They failed to do so, and each department blamed the other for its failures.

They told me that I needed to buy a piece and I couldn't help but think that that was their job. I had to go out and do that myself. The piece was a cover for the waterline where it comes out of the wall. Update**** 3/24/2015 After seeing how displeased I was with the service, I was contacted by Michael & Sons immediately. They corrected the issues I had with the missing cover. I think that speaks volumes and I really appreciated that.

The plumber showed up within the scheduled window. I showed him the work I needed done - replace the kitchen faucet (I provided the new one with supply lines included) and repair a leak under the same sink. His estimate came to $1243.51. I consider myself quite handy and could have done the work myself if not for my lack of spare time. I figured a rough estimate for the job would be between $200 to $300. I was so shocked at his estimate, that I immediately paid him the agreed amount of $29 for just showing up and declined to have him or his company do any of the work. As he sat in his truck in the front of my house, he emailed me his written estimate. I noticed a charge of $389 for the Michael and Sons Home Care Agreement - this charge/agreement was never discussed at all and I couldn't believe he would just include it on my bill without mentioning it. As part of the work, he said he would need to install all new cut off valves. In his estimate, I was to be charged 169.50 for the cut off valves and another 214.79 to repair the leak in the pipe. However, to install the new valves, he would have to replace the broken part of the pipe anyway. Basically, he wanted to bill me twice for the same fix. The plumber originally showed me his estimate on his lap top where some of the charges he added were not visible. When I was able to see the written estimate via the email he sent, I immediately contacted their home office. I told them I felt they were running a scam by over charging customers and they were guaranteed a $29 payment no matter how ridiculous the estimate was. I asked them not to cash my check because of their questionable business practices. Unfortunately, they have cashed my check and their representatives will not return my phone calls. I had a local plumbing company come out the same day and do the exact same work that I offered to the Michael and Sons plumber. The other plumber also took care of a few other issues that the Michael and sons plumber said he wouldn't do. The total was $251 - a difference of almost $1000.

All workers were very professional, knowledgeable, and pleasant -- they completed all work in a timely manner at a fair price.
Description of Work: I had a pin hole in a water pipe - it caused considerable water damage. The Plumber arrived and fixed the leak, he explained everything he was doing and what the cost was up front -- got a 10% military discount too. The work that they did on the valve and where it came into the house was fine. The issue was, that I also had a break in a flexible hose on the faucet under my sink. They attempted to tell me that that was a non-standard hose, and they tried to sell me a brand new faucet, that they said installed would cost over $1000.00. In fact, the faucet that was there was new, the hose was standard, and issue was that they were too lazy to go to the plumbing supply store and get a part that they didn't have on the truck, which I forced them to do. Somehow, when they went, they magically found a hose that fit. The work that they did was fine, but I felt like they were dishonest with me, and that they basically tried to con me for a job that I didn't need. The guy was really terrible about the thing with the hose and the faucet. I would absolutely not use them again, and I have not called them since.

a circuit electricity went off due to a lose wire and so he came in an reconnected that, we also discussed several other jobs to be done in order to bring our house up to code which we'll be doing in the future in segments as we can save the funds to do. The only thing that could be better is that they do some used car sales tactics but all you have to do with a salesmen is say "not at this time" and work it according to your budget and time.

They were okay. The guy put pieces together and didn’t really do a good job. They had to come out 3 different times to fix something. I feel that if they're billing themselves as a company who does plumbing & electrical, they shouldn't have to come out multiple times to fix one problem -- it was a waste of my time.

Our HVAC tech was Gil and he came out on a Sunday evening to investigate the reason we did not have any heat in the house. He quickly diagnosed the condition, walked me through the issues and told me what the assumed solution was. No more than an hour later, we had a new capacitor in our furnace and heat flowing through the house. Top notch service is tough to find. On a weekend, it's even harder. We got both from Michael & Sons and Gil.

Water heater failed on a Friday morning. Didn't have time to shop around and went right to Michael and Sons. They were able to come out that day to give me a quote and perform services. My wife agreed to all their recommendations in conjunction with the water heater to a tune of $2700. Supposedly this stuff was current code. For example, pan under heater to collect water in the event of leak $114. What!? I'm sure it was a $9.99 aluminum pan I could have gotten myself from Home Depot. Whatever... they were responsive, quick and did a great job. I'm very happy with the service and prompt response and would recommend them. You just might want to be aware of all the add-ons.
