When plumber came out, stated he could not perform estimate for work as a "chimney" specialist was needed although I had explained what was needed when the call was placed. Plumber called in for a second appointment for the proper plumber to come out. Traveled from my home in Silver Spring to Georgetown to await second plumber. Never showed up for second appointment and when I called in to see what time they were coming I was told I wasn't on the schedule. They did inform me that they would schedule a 3rd appointment to come out. I told them I lived in Silver Spring and had to travel to Georgetown to assist my elderly relative who lived in the residence and I was not making a third trip out. When I called to talk to someone in customer service about my disappointment with the firm, I was told I would receive a call-back immediately. Call was returned over a week later and no resolution was made. I informed the caller that I felt my money should be returned for the service call as I had actually received NO service. To date, almost 2 months later, I have yet to hear from the company. Needless to say, I will NEVER call them again for any type of plumbing, etc. service!

We had bought a new washer/dryer, but returned it because it wasn't working. We decided to call an electrician before delivery of the new set, in case it was a problem with the outlet, not with the washer. It was near Labor Day weekend, and we called several providers, including many highly-rated ones, but none returned our calls (not even after the holiday...). However, when we called Michael and Son, they picked up right away. They were able to schedule us as soon as possible. Abraham came to our home to check the outlet, and confirmed that it was not outputting enough power. He went to our circuit box, took out the breaker panel...and discovered that the whole thing was burnt up and sparking...at some point there was apparently a FIRE in our box and we had no idea! Since he knew it was an emergency, he called in and was able to schedule the repair for the next day. Abraham and Martin spent nearly 3 hours the next night replacing the entire thing. They were extremely professional, and even vacuumed after. They made absolutely sure that everything was perfect, and took the time to answer all of our questions. The next day, Abraham called to say that he was in the area, and wanted to come by to make sure everything was perfect for our new washer (it was). We will definitely call for any future electrical work. Many of the reviews here say Michael and Son is expensive; we really don't know, but when dealing with electricity, the responsiveness and flawless work were honestly more important. We deeply thank Abraham and Michael & Son for fixing our outlet, and, umm, probably saving our lives.

It went very well. Oscar removed his shoes every time he entered the house (we don't wear shoes in the home). He identified himself and, in addition to being prompt, he was very courteous. Oscar was prepared: had all the parts needed to finish the job. The wiring could not be fixed the same day (today), however, because it was caused by a still-active rodent problem. The rodents chewed the wires causing a short in the circuit. Oscar made a temporary repair, so we would have air conditioning, but a more permanent repair had to wait until after pest control finished their work. Oscar was very accommodating, scheduling a follow-up appointment within 48 hours that worked with both my schedule and the other company's.
Description of Work: Inspected unit. Replaced fuse. Made a temporary repair to damaged wires and scheduled a follow-up visit to complete the repair (the unit is currently functional). Replaced filter. Gave very helpful tips for proper care of unit.

Update: On 9/18/15 I checked my bank account and found that the refund from Michael and Son was posted that morning. I also received a follow up call from Mr. Vance Sheppard. He inquired about whether or not I received the refund and wanted to make sure I was nothing short of happy with their service. While I still maintain that their prices are very high compared to others, I can very much appreciate the professionalism from this company and the fact that M&S went far above and beyond the call of duty... And I'm just ONE customer... Thank you Michael and Son. 9/17/2015: I recently called Michael & Son when my garbage disposal sprung a leak. I had basically 3 days before my vacation to get this taken care of so not much time to call around for estimates. So I thought I'd call a reputable company to 'get her done'. Well... The service technician did show up on time. He was very professional and very knowledgeable. But when we got down to the actual price to replace the garbage disposal I was told $583 dollars! Wow!!! I happen to know (from previous experiences and from looking online) that the garbage disposal itself only costs about $80 retail. That's a huge difference. Nonetheless, my back was against the wall and I needed this work done ASAP. I then I asked how long it would take to install it and the technician's response was 'about an hour'. Sure enough, the work from start to finish took just under one hour. After applying his '10% discount' for the job my total came out to $583... For an hours worth of work and an $80 disposal?!?!?!? WHAT A RIP!!! The very next day I posted an unfavorable review on Yelp.com. A Mr. Basin M. responded to my review stating that he sent this review over to our Plumbing Manager, Malcolm Coleman. He also asked me to contact his Customer Relations manager, Vance Sheppard and provided the phone number for Mr. Sheppard. I called Mr. Sheppard that same day. He was very nice, very funny and very helpful/accommodating. His offer to me was an additional 10% refund ($58) and he would send another plumber out to fix the trap under my sink. He emailed me the Release Agreement with the details on what he promised and asked me to sign and fax back to him - which I did. However... While they DID, in fact send someone out to 'fix' the trap, they never came trough with the $58 refund that was promised me in the Release Agreement. I have called and emailed Roselyn Mason (also in the Customer Relations Department) and she no longer communicates with me regarding this issue. Bottom line... I would ABSOLUTELY NOT recommend this company to anyone.

JOhn and Azeem arrived well within the 9-11:00 window, at 9:45. Introduced themselves to me and then got to work. They were very neat, including putting a dropcloth down on the interior furnace room floor, When they inished about 3:00 John walked me through what they had done inside as well as the outside unit. He had tested the AC cooling in my great room and cleared up the old wires, tubing and unit. Very pleased with their work and professionalism. OF course, I'm always pleased with Michael & Sons work.

I called Michael & Son at 7 a.m. to fix a clogged main water line. They accommodated me in their schedule and a plumber came to my house at 12:30. They charged a dispatch fee of $29 and then gave a fixed price estimate that you can accept or not. The estimate to snake out the main line was $399 and to install an access pipe for future snaking needs was $245. I thought this was very expensive since the plumber said it would take about an hour. It had cost $150 to install a garbage disposal in one hour a few months prior under the Home Depot subcontract, which is what convinced me to call Michael & Son for this job. I called Leahy Plumbing while the plumber waited. John Leahy said they could do it for about $150 - 200, on a time and materials basis that afternoon. I paid Michael & Son $29 and said goodbye. They offered to lower their price to $315, but I was annoyed by that point by their excessively high estimate. Leahy Plumbing arrived within 90 minutes, snaked out the main line in 1 hour, charged $194. Leahy plumbers also pointed out that the rubber sleave already on the main line under the kitchen was sufficient to snake out the line, so that an access value was not necessary. I would not use Michael & Son again unless it is through Home Depot which has reasonable pre-negotiated rates. I recommend customers request a discount before accepting Michael & Son if they give you a fixed price estimate and compare it to another plumber like Leahy before accepting. I do not recommend Michael & Son due to their excessively high pricing.

Although they have admitted to me that they did not do the work promised, they will not refund my money without me signing a legal agreement to not sue. This is because they do not want me to sue for the flood in the house. This was a nightmare as the flood occurred while I was on vacation. And although their rep promised that the work was warranted for 1 year, now Michael's says there is no warranty on the work. You should only hire at your own risk. Bad plumbers can result in bad problems. Find a good, family run operation not a big company that has bad plumbers and doesn't stand behind their work.
Description of Work: I asked provider to stop 4 toilets from running. Their plumber came over and agreed to do a minor toilet rebuild for about $500. He spent 20 minutes working on the toilets. Michael's supervisor later admitted that they had not done the rebuild promised. They only replaced 4 flappers and reduced tank volume. The flappers did not work properly. Within about 2 weeks I had a toilet that stopped up and flooded costing me thousands in repairs. I believe that the work Michaels did not only contributed to the blockage, but failed to prevent the toilet from continuing to run causing a flood.

Mr. James Mabie of Michael and sons came out on time and gave a careful estimate. The total cost seemed high, but the components made sense in order to get us up to code. Did a neat job and cleaned up well after the work. I would use them again. They specialize in installing water heaters and work with Home Depot. Mr Mabie is particularly competent and friendly.

My faucet in my kitchen stopped working. I had company and it was kind of an emergency. They were very responsive and they got here like at 9:00 at night. I had to buy a new faucet. It was very expensive, I don't know if I would use them again. They were very good. You are paying top dollar when you call somebody at night. I would use them again but only in an emergency.

I have had a toilet installed and some plumbing stuff done from Michael & Son. I think it is a handyman service. It is very popular in this area. They have a commercial spot that plays on local television all the time so I am sure they have numerous locations. They are kind of pricey. Nothing really stands out. They give you a long window in which they can come in and you don't know when they are going to show up in the window.

Will not use their services ever again! This is what happened to my service call: 1) I called M&S and they scheduled someone to come out to my place to look at an electrical issue. 2) Technician 'T' shows up and asks me what is going on with the problem. I briefly explains to him 3) Without going down to my electrical panel he tells me that he'll charge me $400 plus dollars just to diagnose the problem and any parts on top of this amount would be extra! 4) I requested this guy since I'm paying you for the service call you should go and at least look at the electric panel and he says no as he knows the problem 5) When I say no to him and informed him that I'll not go for his service at that point he told me that he may be able to do the job for around $200 dollars (now negotiating with me) 6) I paid him his $29 service call fee and said good bye to him. Conclusion: I will not user M&S again as it is clear to me they were unprofessional and try to skim me without spending a single minute diagnosis the issue. How can serviceman quoting me a price without even looking at the electric panel. It is a shame that business like M&S still operate in the USA.

I was displeased after getting a quote for an electrical repair last year. Just before Thanksgiving (it was COLD, in case you don't remember,) electricity in part of our house was going out and the breaker wasn't working, so we called for a repair estimate. The estimate was $59. Unfortunately, the technician said all he could do was install a new meter, which would require working with Pepco and increasing the amount of electricity we receive to the house for a total of about $4,000. On the plus side, the technician was able to come quickly and was very professional, kind and experienced. I thanked him for the recommendation and explained that we'd already survived a winter in the house so we, therefore, should have enough electricity to do it again (we have radiators for heat, btw.) and asked if there was anything he could do to fix the problem. He said, basically, that getting more electricity from pepco and a new meter was the only option, and if we weren't prepared to start the project that day (going into Thanksgiving weekend?! $4,000!?) we would be without heat. We called someone else who replaced the breaker for $40 and survived the winter (and spring, and summer . . . ) just fine. Following this, I called the M&S offices to complain that I'd been given a quote for another project altogether and I didn't want to pay the fee since the technician hadn't offered a reasonable solution, in my opinion. To me, he didn't propose a solution to the problem at all; he recommended a completely separate job which obviously wasn't required and I didn't feel that my needs as a customer had been heard and understood. The representative called me again and spoke to me at length explaining that Michael and Sons sometimes cannot offer quick, temporary solutions because they are a large company who has a reputation to maintain. Also, the technician was, indeed, one of their most experienced who prides himself only on doing the best work for the long term. The positive takeaway was that they stand by their work, which would be important for a big job. I also understand that such a large, long-standing operation has to pass inspections with the local agencies, which, to be fair, was not the case with our small repair. Based on the explanation I was given and the time devoted to me as a potential customer, I would consider using these guys again, despite my initial misgivings, especially for a large job.

The salesman Frank Disbrow explained everything that was required in detail, including my options. The installers were less communicative, but everything worked out well.
