I just wanted to let everyone know how impressed I am with all of the Michael and Son technicians with whom I have had the pleasure of working for the last couple of months while we have been making improvements to our newly purchased home in Fishersville, Virginia. Kevin and Nate (from Richmond)--the technicians who performed the encapsulation of the crawlspace. What awesome attitudes! Such a pleasure to meet professional, intelligent young men who take their job seriously and wish for the customer's 100% satisfaction. Robert Rhoades--Replaced well pump and tank. Excellent, knowledgeable, and kind. Ricky Keyton--Assessed the plumbing needs of the house and barn and replaced whole house filter. Super nice, knowledgeable and helpful. Joey and Derek--Electricians who replaced fire/CO2 alarms. Super nice, knowledgeable, sweet! Brian--the HVAC guy. Very knowledgeable, helpful! Allen--the HVAC cleaner from Harrisonburg. Super guy. Hard worker! If one is going to spend the kind of money we did (+ or - $12K), it certainly helps to have the technicians be so friendly and willing to serve the customer's needs. It takes an informed employer to find workers like Nate, Kevin, Robert, Ricky, Joey, Derek, Brian, and Allen. Congratulations! Michael and Son has exceeded my expectations--again! The electrician (Erik Butler) tried several things moving the outlet from one side of the wall to the other neither of which worked. He then thought about it for a few minutes and came up with a plan to insert the plug into the floor which work perfectly. He was neat and polite and answered all my questions. I appreciate his diligence in solving the problem.

They replaced the circuit breaker of the HVAC. It caused a problem with the dryer. I had to call appliance company to check if the dryer is wrong, they said nothing is wrong but its not getting 240 v. So something wrong with circuit breaker. I called Michael & Sons, they came and told me they will charge to fix it, and even to troubleshoot the issue. Finally they called the manager and reduced the service fee to $87, finally they found that there is a loose connection on dryer circuit breaker. They are so rude and useless. This is a worst experience I had, will never use their service again. Please think twice before calling them.

The purpose of this is to explain how well we enjoy we enjoy using Michael & Sons. We've used Michael & Sons in our Arlington home for over 10 plus years after having been terribly disappointed with others. When we bought a second home out in Delaplane, we again looked to Michael & Sons after finding that others there that inspected our home prior to purchasing, having given very positive responses about various things in the house, electric/heating/AC/etc...after moving in, found their assessments were inaccurate and some work they did was less than accurate. We understand Michael & Sons is expensive compared to others but as the saying goes: "you get what you pay for"...and in Michael & Sons case, we've never been disappointed. We have never been pressured to do/purchase something. We've gotten suggestions and based on subsequent research, what they offered as replacements - some strongly suggested to fix a problem and others as suggestions for improvement - have been sound. Those we selected, we've been totally satisfied with. Having seen some of the other comments about late technicians, offering expensive items, etc...on Yelp and we would offer that we've never had a problem with a late technician, even in the case that the addresses for both are homes are challenging. In both cases, we help guided them in and where a technician found himself falling behind, we've been called and worked things out. As for their offering items...have never felt pressured and whether we accepted their recommendations at the time - checking their suggestions afterwards or held off to think about them before making a decision, we've never been disappointed. They offer quality products, that upon research, turn out to be the high quality they have stated. Again..."you get what you pay for." So we highly recommend Michael & Sons and, being fans of Angie's List - the Yelp competition - have found Michael & Sons at the top of their ratings. So we hope this helps putting Michael & Sons in a proper light from what we've experienced over 10 plus years.
Description of Work: He came out to check a potential problem - part of our contract with them - and it turned out there was nothing that they had done that needed repair - charged us nothing. We subsequently found the issue and quickly resolved it.

I called Michael and Son's and since I couldn't identify if it was furnace or hot water problem. Amazingly they sent both a HVAC person and a plumber and were going to charge for only one service call. Then after it was determined that it wasn't a HVAC problem those guys left --no charge. The plumber came and it was an easy fix, no charge. I've been around 70 years now and I have never experienced more professional, courteous, and knowledgeable service people in my life. I would highly recommend them to anyone without question.

The pipe in question sprung a leak in the early morning hours. Discovered it upon rising and called Michael & Son because of their large ad in the yellow pages claiming 24 hr emergency service. Left msg with call service, no response, had to call back about 10 a.m. at which point had to repeat problem/service request all over again. Rep showed up couple of hours later, but just to look around and plug the firm's other services. Actual plumber only showed late afternoon but did not have materials. After a night w/o water, he returned late the next morning, some 29 hours after my initial call -- not what I'd call emergency service! He completed the job in two hours and charged me over $1000. This seems to me to have been very excessive, particularly given that (1) the service was not really "emergency" and (2) I have now had another firm replace all the pipes in the basement, a job requiring perhaps ten times as much material and one full day's labor by three plumbers, for $3200. Actually, the latter company went ahead and also replaced the pipe installed by Micheal & Son, pointing out that it was secured only by several plastic ties and could have come down at any time! Bottom line: M&S strives for a good presentation with their lavish advertising, uniforms, fancy tablets, etc. but judging from this experience they are way overpriced and their responsiveness & quality of work leaves much to be desired.

The initial estimate process went fine, but once I started to ask for changes, that's where the process went down hill. The office staff paid no attention to the detail when revising the estimates and I eventually had to ask that things be escalated to a manger. Once that occurred everything was fine. When I went in to pick the materials, the original estimator was brought back into the process and things went downhill again. The next day 12/23/15 - I cancelled the contract, within the three days, allowed and am now still waiting for them to send the deposit back. It's cleared my account and I can provide proof it's cleared but to no avail. What makes situation worse in the manager admitted, in writing, she didn't know what their refund policy was or how it worked. Nor, when I cancelled the contract on 12/23/15 did they provide their policy. They are trying to hold onto the money as long as possible. It's been 12 business days - they were quick to electronically process the check but are taking their sweet time in providing the money back.

The good: The pilot light on my hot water heater went out. I managed to get it relit, but I had no idea why it had gone out, and thought it would be worth getting a professional to take a look. In the course of fiddling with the water heater I tried the emergency relief valve and vented some water, but the valve kept leaking afterwards. I called Michael and Son via their ad in the Yellow Pages and said it was urgent (I had to go to work, and we were about to leave town). They agreed to come the same day and did. Very responsive. The not good: The repairman replaced the emergency valve for $336. Wow. For replacing a single exterior valve. Seemed a bit high to me for a simple job that took very little time. The detailed invoice said the job required "in-depth technical diagnostics to determine the cause of the system failure." Right. The valve had rarely or never been tripped, and I figured my tripping it caused problems with it re-seating, or the washer was worn. This is not rocket science requiring "in-depth technical analysis." It's Plumbing 101. The bad: The repairman -- Agustin Gomez -- immediately began trying to up-sell my wife, who put me on the phone from work to deal with his repeated insistence that we needed more than just the valve. He said our water pressure was high, so we needed a water heater expansion tank ($298.35 on the detailed list he left us) and a pressure reducing valve ($458.68) to set house water pressure at 60 psi. I declined, and later bought a pressure tester from Amazon for $10 and tested our water pressure -- it's 60 psi. Mr. Gomez said we should pull and replace the water heater burner assembly ($391.82). Even better, we could do a major rebuild of the water heater ($905.40). We declined. He also said he wasn't sure he could replace the emergency relief valve because the valve to turn off water to the house was too old and corroded to work (and would have to be replaced, of course). But when I said I had used it recently, he relented and said he could turn off the water at the water heater anyway. I quickly got the impression that Mr. Gomez saw my wife and me as marks who could be scared into buying things we didn't need. I'm not sure he even checked the pilot light, since he deflected my questions when I asked him what might have caused it to go out, and what he saw when he checked it. This experience was extremely disappointing. I don't trust Michael and Son at all, and will never do business with them again.

We receive the quote and notice a lot of what we wanted addressed was not included. We asked for another quote and instructed M&S to make sure they use the spreadsheet we provided. Oh well, we received another quote, only to have it incorrect again and our concerns still not addressed. To say the lease, we went with another contractor. I've used M&S for other services in the passed and have always been very satisfied. Bathroom remodeling... not so much.
Description of Work: We contacted M&S to give quotes to remodel a bathroom and powder room. We provided detail information on a spreadsheet that included what had been purchased and what we needed to complete the work to the contractor sent out. He was very nice and polite and said he would provide a quote within two days.

I would use them again. I do use them consistently. I would give them an A for everything, but their price I would give a C. That included the toilet but it still was pricey but I didn't have the opportunity to go out and buy the toilet myself. The level of professionalism of the person that they sent out to do the work was incredibly good. He was very knowledgeable and very well-spoken. He was very neat. He cleaned everything up. He went above and beyond making sure that everything was done correctly.

Fantastic. They were wonderful.
Description of Work: Main drain backup on a sunday....my warranty company couldn't find anyone who could come immediately, and authorized outside vendor - Michael and son's showed up - in the dark - and fixed the problem immediately. ....the technician (Donald ) was very pleasant and professional, and was very kind to my grandson, answering his unending questions. They came back the next day to do the FREE camera inspection of the lines..I'm very impressed with Michael and son's ... The second technician (Carl) was wonderfully polite, very professional and a pleasure to deal with. He did, indeed, put the mat down, use shoe covers inside the house, thoroughly explained (and showed) the issue at hand. He went to great lengths to ensure I knew exactly what was occurring. It is directly due to his professionalism and courtesy ) that I secured future work via contract.

The work was done neatly, and so far it seems to be okay...but I will tell everyone I know that the prices are really outrageous!!!!!! Once again...$957 for 2 hours of work. At the most expensive supply house (and at retail) 3-4 valves and 12 inches of copper pipe are less than $150...leaving $800 for labor...one man...two hours!!!!!!!!!??????? DO NOT USE THEM!
Description of Work: Replaced shutoff valves under sink...one to cold water, one to hot, and replaced the saddle "T" to the ice maker line. Replaced kitchen faucet with same model and which was PROVIDED BY ME. Work was complete in less than 2 hours from arrival. Price, though I agreed to it, was exorbitant! 3-4 valves, and 12 inches of copper pipe were not likely to cost more than $150. That leaves $800 for labor!!!!!!!!

They came in to perform the annual heating inspection and made recommendation to replace some parts which will cost of between $1100-1200 in total. In the meantime their works caused leaking of water which they claimed they were not responsible. Even their technician acknowledged that their previous work of installing my water heater(they installed last year) was not done professionally. With that installation we can't drain or flush the heater which was a total mess. This is not first time Micheal & son denied their responsibility for their screw-up. Last time the copper pipes started leaking after their installation of my new water heater. They made me pay around $200-300 for their mistake to repair the pipe. Long story short. We got another vendor came in to do the repair and replaced more parts which cost only $580.

Over priced!! Cold water the next morning. I have used Michael and Son before, their prices are always on the high side, they try to paint a doom and gloom situation to justify their high prices, and the quality of work looks like something done by someone who doesn't take a lot of pride in their work. This was the final straw for me.

Do not do business with Michael and Son Plumbing. Reasons: 1. Improper installations (rough-in piping and faucet) because plumbers had so much pride that they did not want to read the blueprints and manuals for proper installation. 2. Unethical, dishonest people who you do not want in your house. A plumber named Scott McConnell drew a happy face on my basement wall and unlocked my garage door by unscrewing the inside lock so that he could come into the site the next day easily. The manager of the plumbing division, Kenneth Heflin, willingly protected his plumbers anyway when I addressed Scott's behavior. All in all, unethical people are running this company. If you want to have plumbers like that, hire this company. Otherwise, stay away!
Description of Work: Install rough-in plumbing in the basement and some plumbing work in the kitchen. The contractor was under contract to perform more plumbing work, but I terminated the contract.

I?ve always felt that Michael and Sons was overpriced, but considered their work high quality. I will no longer use them after our recent experience with them on our heat pump. We had requested one of their technicians to come out to give us an estimate on an item that our home inspector had noticed. Instead of giving us an estimate on the issue we had called them about, he started identifying a whole set of ?upsells? that were not critical or related to the item we asked him to look at, which created a lot of confusion in the process. His estimate never included a price for the issue in question, and he did not give us a price for that until several follow-up e-mails.

They called asking if they could arrive early and they did. From the outset they were consummate professionals in their greeting, discussing the cost of what I was asking them to do and then literally efficient go getters. There were two electricians, team leader Josue, whose honesty and desire to get the work done for me was a little surprising indeed. Perhaps the best thing was that they just weren't trying to rush anything. When some of the wiring presented a challenge I offered them the option to drop it and we could do it another time and Josue said please let him try to figure it out, he certainly did and I couldn't have been pleased more. It seemed to me that their truck was equipped for any task. I had added to additional requirements after their arrival and they had everything they needed in that truck of theirs. They covered their shoes when entering the house and even brought a little small carpet to wipe their feet on before entering. All in all an excellent experience and yes, I would certainly ask them to come back.

Terrible...they didn't show up. How can you take a credit card, when your service and punctuality is that horrible? It is extremely disrespectful to your customers and potential clients to require a credit card to get you to show up and you never do. Poor business practices almost always equate to poor business service and poor customer retention.
Description of Work: I called at 11:30am on Sunday for them to come out on an "emergency" call for an overflowing toilet that flooded my basement. They required my credit card number at the time I called in order for them to schedule them. I called several times throughout the day, with the customer service representative stating that they would call back with updates from the dispatcher. At approximately 9pm, without any calls back from the company, I called and cancelled.

After another electrician did not come back to complete work Michael and Sons sent someone quickly to help us. Josue Espina was the electrician.. He was polite, repected my home, and got the job done. My only disappointment ws the cost of the transformer that had to be ordered. My elctrical issues were fixed!
