We take great pride in providing our customers with the highest quality plumbing services. Our professional and courteous staff are here to help you with whatever projects you need to get done.
I did not have a great experience with Michael & Sons. I am a new homeowner and needed some very minor electrical work done. I let it slip to the technician/salesman that I was a new homeowner and he quoted me $1000 for the work. I expressed that I thought that was high. I went inside to talk with my wife, when I came back out I was told the quote was actually $450 instead. In 5 minutes, the cost of a job dropped by $550 (not because of anything other than my expressed skepticism about the price). I asked why, the explanation was very unclear and a complete non-sequitur At $450, it was still high but I agreed in the essence of convenience. An hour into the window for the work to be done I was called and told the person who would be coming to do the work was sick and wouldn't be coming that day. Very inconvenient for me as rescheduling would require an additional 4 hour window I'd need to be at the house for the reschedule. I was going to sign up for their yearly servicing of my entire home that day as well (HVAC, plumbing, etc) but since the person never showed up, I figure that was a harbinger of things to come. I declined to reschedule the job altogether. Called another local electrician who came and did the job the same day for $275 dollars. I'm not going to give all Fs because I never got a chance to see the quality of the work. Just because I'm a new home owner, doesn't mean I'm a complete moron. The inflated initial quote just to see how I'd react was offensive - I can only imagine what happens with much more elderly folks who don't know any better. I understand this is part of the sales role of the techs, but I'll go with smaller companies from now on who are just Electricians and Plumbers, not salesmen. Not a good experience and it was a blessing they decided to call out on my the morning of the job. I've signed up with a small local company to service my home yearly instead.

Michael and Son Services was hired by the seller of my home to complete home repairs as a part of the home purchase agreement. One of the items they "repaired" was rotted wood in the roof. This involved completely stripping down a section of the roof: removing shingles, felt paper, plywood and replacing. The problem in their repair was not apparent until the summer storm season arrived. One evening my wife pointed out to me a wet spot in our ceiling. I went to the attic to inspect the area. Upon lifting up some insulation I found the underside to be soaking wet and mold ridden, yuck! Knowing that I needed evidence to prove that the leak was coming from the repair, I sat and waited in my attic each time it rained until finally a few days later, in the middle of the night a major storm hit. Water poured down through the middle of the area of their "repair." Upon closer inspection, I could see that no underlayment was used under the shingles. This didn't seem right so I started reading the Virginia State building code and discovered that this was a violation of the code. Prior to spot in the ceiling, this error was not apparent because this is a layer of material that normally goes between the shingles & plywood. Once installed, it is hidden from view. Unfortunately, I did not pay anyone to babysit Michael & Son during their repair to ensure it was done properly. When I contacted the company it took me 3 days to get the right person to call me back. Each time I spoke with a customer service person they were friendly, professional, apologetic but ultimately not helpful. Finally, when I spoke with their representative (who had been in charge of the original repair) he initially told me "sorry, my boss says no warranty." I asked for his bosses contact info thinking that once I explained myself and pointed out that the work was not done per code nor per standard roofing practices, that they'd see it my way and we'd come to an understanding that both sides could agree to. The representative refused to give me a telephone number and refused to have his boss (the owner) call me to discuss. Instead he only gave me an email address. That's fine, so I sent an email pointing out what I mentioned above, highlighting the code violation and the resultant damage. A few hours later I received a call from the same company rep saying that he would "come and look at it." Once he came and observed their mistake, he agreed to fix the roof and the subsequent insulation and ceiling damage. Great, I thought - cooler heads prevailed and this must be a reputable company after all. I insisted that only a licensed and insured roofer do the roof work to which they agreed. After several weeks of phone tag, and the roofer being busy, my roof was finally "re-repaired". This time properly. No details as to the process for remediating the ceiling damage and mold were discussed. I have 4 children ages 6 down to 6 months so I am extremely concerned about them getting sick from the mold (see photos). I decided to call Michael & Son Mold Remediation to come out and give me their opinion on the mold - is this dangerous or not? What is the safe way to remove the damaged moldy drywall, etc? The M&S Mold Remediation specialist came and provided an estimate and scope of work. I forwarded this to the Michael and Son representative explaining that this is the manner in which I expected him to handle the potentially toxic material as recommended by his own company. To my shock & dismay, he called me back later that day, upset that I had "gotten Michael and Son involved." What?! And that he would only fix the roof and that I would have to file a claim with my insurance to fix the rest of the damage. I asked point blank "so does this mean you are going back on our agreement that you would fix the damage caused by your bad repair?" He could only say that now since I had gotten his mold guys involved I had to go through my insurance. I explained to him that my insurance deductible is $1,000 and that mold remediation is not a covered service. He had no reply and the call ended. Now I stand holding the bag to repair ceiling damage, remediate mold, and replace insulation all caused by an amateur repair done by this "professional company" that makes the following promise: "Our promise guarantees that if for any reason you are not 100% satisfied with the service you received, we'll do whatever it takes to make it right. " As the saying goes, "talk is cheap." Now I will likely be stuck with $2,000-$3,000 in repair costs.

Very dissatisfied. It took 5 county inspections before the work was approved, and despite assurances from the technician and manager of the Electrical Department (Michael Grimaud), the 200+ foot trench traversing our yard was never back filled. I apprised the Assistant Customer Service Manager (Paige Mack) that I was not satisfied (they advertise a 100% satisfaction guarantee), but was never offered a remedy. We were promised that the job would be completed in 1 day; after 53 days we hired someone else to finish the work.

The tech arrived on time. Assessed the situation, pointed out potential issues and gave me an immediate estimate. As he was progressing the wiring issue proved much more problematic than his original assessment. Unfortunately for me, he had to charge me a Problem Solving fee of $182 -- but boy did he earn it. He rewired all of the switches and installed a nine smart dimmers. The tech was in my house for over six hours. I asked if he could install a cat5 wired security camera, but that wasn't in his abilities. No worries. I highly recommend their Electrical services. Unfortunately, I had a poor experience with their HVAC unit (see my seperate review)
Description of Work: I needed help installing some smart dimmers throughout my house. What I thought was a relatively simple job was impacted by the subpar wiring in the house I purchased.

This is the first negative review I've ever submitted. Typically, if I receive poor service I try to give the person the benefit of the doubt and assume that they are just having a bad day. However, I simply could not let this one go. I think anyone considering hiring Michael and Sons (M&S) should be aware of experiences such as our own.My husband and I reached out to several HVAC companies in the area to get quotes for our HVAC installation. Obviously this is a big expense, and one that we take very seriously. We ended up going with M&S even though their quote was slightly higher than others we received. This was our decision because the estimator was extremely professional and personable, and took the time to make sure we understood everything we were signing up for. We felt like we were in great hands and that the warranty and other benefits of going with M&S outweighed the better price of other companies. Two days after the estimate, M&S was at our house installing our new unit. I took off a day of work for this installation (as is typical for this type of work). The installation started around 9am and ended close to 5pm. I want to stress how wonderful the technicians were. They were very polite and considerate the whole day, and confirmed my feelings that we made the right decision and were in good hands. Unfortunately, the problems began that evening, first with a minor issue. The thermostat would not work with the fan mode set to ?auto,? only with it set to ?fan.? We spoke with the HVAC manager, Jason, that evening, who assured us that the issue could wait until the next afternoon to be attended. While his explanation seemed reasonable, he seemed more interested in dismissing our concerns than addressing them. He did however, assure my husband that someone would come to the house the next afternoon between 4-6pm. Things only got worse, as the next morning at 2am we woke up sweating. Our house was close to 90 degrees. We called M&S and spoke to a representative. We told them that we could make it through the night and that sending an emergency technician was not necessary. However, we did want someone at our house that afternoon to get this resolved as soon as possible (which for us would not be until we could get home from work the next afternoon). During the torrid 2am phone call, we expressed our concern that our brand new AC unit (that we spent over $6,000 on) was not working. The representative assured us that the the manager from the local office (Jason) would be in touch to hear our concerns and to make sure our appointment was scheduled for that afternoon. Every step of the way, when we were told to expect a phone call, we instead had to reach out to M&S to get any information. My husband called them at 7:30 am to reschedule our appointment for earlier in the day, and was told to expect a phone call at 9:00 am from the HVAC department. At 9:45, he again had to reach out to find out about the appointment, and was told it had been rescheduled for 2-6pm, but that M&S had neglected to let him know it had been rescheduled. He explained that a 4-hour window was inconvenient because of his work schedule, and that he?d like to have a better idea of when to get home from work (we understand that 4-hour windows are typical for this kind of work, but felt that our situation should be given more priority because of the inconvenience we?d experienced with a newly installed unit). M&S said they?d be unable to guarantee anything, but would try to have someone there before 3. At 2:10, my husband called from work (20 minutes from home) to check on what time the appointment would be, and was informed they were 10 minutes away, although no one had ever called to tell us when to expect a technician. They also said that morning they would have the HVAC manager, Jason, call my husband at 2:30 that afternoon, to hear our concerns. We never heard from the manager. While the technician was at our house for the second visit (which was a Friday afternoon), my husband called M&S (for the fifth time that day) to get in touch with the manager, but was informed the manager had already gone home for the weekend. He expressed his frustration, and was assured that the message would be passed on to the manager, who gets emails on the weekend and would ?hopefully get in touch.? He never did. About 48 hours after the second visit to our house, our AC unit stopped working again. At this point we were becoming very worried. Our unit was installed on Thursday, failed a few hours later, was worked on again on Friday by technicians, and then gave out yet another time on Sunday. We called the number that the technician provided us for weekend support. It happened to be the manager (Jason) from whom we were promised a phone call a few times before. This was the second time we spoke with Jason. The first time he seemed very unconcerned about our situation...which was living in a house with malfunctioning AC with temperatures near 100 degrees. We figured he must deal with this situation often, and that was why he was so apathetic. This second time was during the call on Sunday afternoon when we realized our house was warming up and the AC was not working (again). We expressed our concern with Jason and also let him know that we were disappointed that we never heard from him, but just happened to be able to speak with him because our AC unit was not operating again. Yet again, Jason did not seem to care. He immediately became defensive and proceeded to blame the receptionist for never giving him the message. While we recognize that these things happen and that may well have been the case, we really expected that a manager would show some sort of concern that the message was never passed along to his customers. Instead, we were met with a great amount of hostility. Jason made us wait 30 minutes before even telling us when to expect a technician (when I asked if it could not be sooner, he suggested I was asking him to put his son?s life in danger by having him use his computer while driving -- a suggestion I came nowhere close to making). When Jason told us it would take 90 minutes for a tech to arrive, my husband expressed his displeasure that total wait time would be 2 hours for emergency weekend work on a brand new unit that had repeatedly malfunctioned. It was at this point that Jason told us he was ?baffled? by us. I suppose having concerned customers after their brand new AC unit has failed for a second time in 72 hours is baffling to some. Jason never once apologized for the inconvenience (he did sarcastically apologize that ?none of (their) techs live in our neighborhood,?), and things escalated to the point that I could hear Jason yelling at my husband through the phone from two rooms away. Jason then proceeded to hang up on my husband while he was talking. My husband called Jason back and left him a message saying that we would like to speak with him regarding our concerns about our AC unit (that was never able to get across during the conversation as Jason quickly turned defensive about never getting in touch with us before) and to confirm whether or not a technician was actually on the way. Yet again, it was up to us to call the M&S office to confirm we would actually have a technician coming. Thankfully this was the only time we had to do so because of being hung up on by the HVAC manager for the region. After being hung up on by Jason, my husband called a corporate 800 number to attempt to get in touch with someone who supervises Jason. He was told that Jason has no supervisor with whom we can speak, but that a Customer Relations service would contact him within 24 hours to hear his concerns and discuss potential resolutions. Three weeks later, we?ve still never heard from Customer Relations (although we do plan to follow up with them). Based on both our experience with Jason and our lack of experience with Customer Relations, it is now our impression that Michael & Son?s uniform approach to customer concerns is to address them with vague apologies at best, outright disdain and condescension at worst, and to promise follow-up but fail to follow through. We still have never heard back from Jason. To use Jason?s words, I would like to explain why I?m ?baffled?. I?m baffled that we never received communication from Jason after we were promised he would be in contact regarding our concerns (after the first time the AC unit gave out). I?m baffled because after Jason learned that we were told he would contact us, he responded in a hostile way implying that this was our problem and not a problem with communication within his own office. I?m baffled that Jason raised his voice in such an aggressive way. I?m baffled that Jason hung up on a concerned customer that had a malfunctioning AC unit, for a second time, installed by his own company a few days beforehand. I am baffled that a manager thinks it is ok to treat customers in the irrational way that Jason did. Most importantly, I am baffled that a company like M&S, which has a good reputation and made a great impression on us initially, has a person like Jason in a managerial role. Sadly, I would not recommend M&S to anyone after this experience. This truly makes me sad because I really do think the estimator and the technicians are all great. If the management situation were different with M&S, we would be writing a very different review even though our AC unit has malfunctioned twice now. We understand that there can be nuances with new machinery. We also understand that most companies would go out of their way to appease concerned customers. It would not have taken much to appease us. A simple conversation regarding our concerns would have sufficed, unfortunately that was too much for Jason to handle. Unless M&S changes their approach to management, I would strongly suggest that you take your business elsewhere.

Our HVAC stopped working on July 25 & since we're Home Care members, Michael & Son put us on their emergency call list. Tech was there within a couple of hours, determined we had a blown fuse & replaced it. Because we told him the same thing happened in 2015, he said he'd recommend an electrical tech come check the HVAC system wiring for us. Senior Electrician Brian M. came out the following week. With a professionalism & patience far beyond the usual Mike+Son caliber, Brian explained how the HVAC electrical works & the advantages/disadvantages of installing a "direct" wiring to the outdoor unit so we wouldn't have to worry about future blown fuses. We asked if we might just have extra fuses on hand & change them ourselves if it happened again & he agreed that would also work. Because of Brian's great attitude & professionalism we asked him for a quote on installing 2 electrical outlets in our downstairs family room. The price was reasonable (with the 10% Home Care discount) so we initiated the work; Brian installed both outlets, including cutting drywall openings, vacuuming & cleaning up in less than an hour. We asked if we might specify him as our "electrical guy" for future work & he said "yes" & gave us his card. Michael & Son technicians have been hit & miss for us since 2014 but occasionally an excellent representative like Brian M. shows up - and this is why we renewed our Home Care agreement again this year.

Nonresponsive. I called the "24/7" line with an emergency. A pipe burst in my wall and needed a plumber to patch the burst pipe. The call was placed at 10pm, and I was told that I would be contacted shortly with an ETA for the emergency plumber. At 1:30am I finally called back asking about my request. I was told that they couldn't find anyone available. You'd think someone could call me to tell me that no one was available.

After speaking with a friendly phone rep, Nate came by for an evaluation and price estimate on a new air conditioning unit the next day. He was very thorough, informative and helpful. Despite being more expensive than some other quotes, my husband and I felt most comfortable with him (he really knew his stuff) and decided to move forward with installation. The installers (Phil and Evan) were great as well - they made the entire process very simple and worked efficiently. Overall it was a smooth experience and we were so impressed we even signed up for a regular service agreement with them. Everyone was on time, prepared, and professional. I’d recommend their services!

We received service from Michael & Sons about a month ago. Within the last week or so, the over $300 we paid to fix the problem reappeared. After contacting them about the issue, they agreed to send another service technician out to remedy the issue. The technician's window was from 8am-noon today (dispatch told me that they would request the service time to be at 8am though). At around 10am, I called just to confirm this and was told that someone would be there within the time window. Well, no one showed up. At 12:01pm, I received a call from the man who was suppose to show up. I told him that I was not waiting around. I had already wasted 4 hours of leave and wasn't about to waste anymore. Now, with this being said, I get it, things happen. People get delayed or have to cancel for various reasons, but #1 at least have the common decency to apologize. It may be just a word, but it still packs some significance. Keep in mind that my time is just as valuable as yours. #2 I am pretty sure that Michael & Sons has the support mechanisms in place to give me the common courtesy of calling and informing me of this delay/cancellation. Lastly, #3 just because I am slightly aggravated at the situation, shouldn't give you the right to be slightly aggravated at me for being aggravated! Hey, I've been in your situation before - suck it up and be "customer service friendly!" All of this equals SUBPAR SERVICE and if it wasn't for the fact that their initial job is under warranty, I wouldn't be using them again. Third go round is hopefully the charm, right?

A+ service from start to finish. We called them for emergency service on our A/C. They came out and gave us the diagnosis and more than sufficiently explained the problem and solution options which was very enlightening. We chose to purchase a new furnace and within 3 days, it was installed and it's the right unit for our house since we can't have a condensating higher efficiency unit due to the location of the unit and the fact that the condensation drain pipe will freeze in the winter and shut the system off. We had been running the condensation line to a bucket and dumping every so often. NO MORE!!! Michaels and Sons SOLVED our problem once and for all. They told us they could repair the immediate problem of replacing a bad blower motor for $800 to get our air back on but we would still have the condensation problem. We chose to buy a new furnace instead that does not condensate. Thank you so much for having knowledgeable technicians (Demetrius W., Glen, and Marcus). They explained it backwards and forwards to us and was extremely patient with all our questions until we were comfortable. That is customer service!!! Some other companies can take notes from you!

It was generally a simple job, except for the location of the valve. They had to do a lot of work to get to it. It was a valve to turn off and on the external faucet and it was leaking and it needed a new washer. It was a minor job except that it was located under the kitchen sink, behind the garbage disposable. So they had to completely disassemble the garbage disposable etc to get to this piece of thing to be able to get the damn thing off, to replace a simple thing. Of course, the whole time, the guy was in a strain, underneath the sink. It would have been very simple for the poor guy to be just a jerk about it, like, "Oh my gosh, I can't believe I've got to do this," and just be short and curt and get on with it and do it, but not be happy. That guy was so pleasant and smiling and laughing. It just was wonderful.

I had had a contractor come in previously to install a fan in the bathroom upstairs. In figuring out what was going on, it turns out that that contractor screwed up and put that electrical system into the regular lighting system for the upstairs. When I turned on the lights in the closet, the fan in the bathroom was going and it would blow the breaker. So they came out and rewired and actually had to install another breaker to divide it up appropriately.

TOTAL CROOKS! This is a minor repair. We used another plumber for the same repair at our house and it was $175. We were provided an estimate of $300 but they wouldn't guarantee the repair unless they ripped out a wall, etc. The estimate was thousands of dollars. We are not stupid. We have arranged for a non-criminal plumber to do the work for the correct price. It's like going to 7-11 for a gallon of milk and the cashier says that will be $598.00. What you say? We did pay the $29 fee for "assessment" or in other words, attempted robbery. BEWARE.

Thank you for your feedback. While we don't agree with your analogy, we are happy to hear that you have taken care of your rental property's plumbing issue at a price that worked for you. After completing an assessment of the property, our licensed plumber noted some items of concern and gave you an honest, upfront price on our warrantied cost to service. We needed to talk to an expert on A/C who would listen to our needs and come back with some options. Michael and Sons sent over SAMUEL GOMES, Sr. Tech and he was amazing. He came to our house, put shoe protectors on, listened to everything we wanted/needed and then measured up our space, all the while asking smart questions to clarify our needs. This guy was amazing. Great customer service and solid people skills. He started doing research almost immediately, calling other experts back at the office and manufacturer's. Within 2 hours he called us back gave us a range of reasonable options so that we could decide what was best for us. A very consultative approach. We really enjoyed having a high caliber person to work with!

Would not provide any estimate or cost information over the phone. All services must start with a non-optional $29 "dispatch fee" so that the service provided can review the work requested. All other service professionals I called were happy to provide an initial estimate or at least the hourly costs for labor. Choose another company.

My husband found somebody else cheaper than them. We didn't go with Michael & Son. Their quote was a little bit higher. They responded immediately.
Description of Work: It was regarding the faucet in the kitchen. They came and gave an estimation.

I forgot about the contract, so the agreement lapsed in March. When I called them, they said I would have to pay for the repair and THEN renew my contract for $398. I told them to forget it and I find someone else. I had issues with them when I had them before, so I didn't see any reason to continue with them.
Description of Work: I had a contract with them for service calls. I called them recently when my AC stopped working properly.

I was really pleased with them. I was selling the house and they were working off the punch list from the house inspection. They're always pricey, but they do good work.
Description of Work: They did electrical and air conditioning work.
