We were in the middle of a storm. They were fast and efficient and explain the process well. The only negative I would give them is they want to sell you maintenance packages.

I don't know how their prices compare, but when it gets warm and you don't have air, you don't have time to shop around. The price seemed high, but I have no basis for comparison. The workers were fine. It took probably two or three hours for the work to be completed.
Description of Work: The air conditioner wasn't working and apparently during the winter, mice had gotten up and eaten some wires. They did the inspection and repaired it.

Never showed up! They left me late at night with a leaky pipe after waiting 5 1/2 hours for nothing. I called at 630pm to request emergency service for a leaky pipe. I was assured a plumber would be there that night, probably within 2 hours. No sign of a plumber at 9pm. I called back to check on the status. I was told some one would definitely be out that night. Waited till 11pm and called back. Night shift operator had no record of my request, and said he had no record of a plumber being out at all that night... Very disappointed. I wasted more than 12 hours with water leaking into my wall because Michael's & Son blew me off.

While I was out of the state my daughter and son in law had my kitchen faucet replaced. It was a nice gesture and a thoughtful thing to do BUT I have my own plumber. My son in law said the price for Mike's was $600! I didn't want to ask if they were kidding so I'm not sure if that was the true price. The replacement was installed incorrectly (a one handled faucet which had the typical half red, half blue water temp indicator). When the faucet handle was placed in the middle (for warm/cold) it was in reality HOT. The faucet handle couldn't be pushed any further to the left for hot. the guy told my son in law that is how the faucet 'goes'. I was not born yesterday and had a hissy fit. I called to have someone come fix this properly but they were running late and couldn't get here within the time frame I required. I told them I was writing a poor review on Angie's list. My advice is do not ever, ever hire a business with the name 'Mike' anywhere in it. btw I am considering calling my own plumber and just eating the cost.
Description of Work: As a nice surprising gesture while I was out of town my daughter and son in law thought they'd be kind and have my leaky kitchen faucet replaced.

Everything went well. The technician explained in terms I could understand why the garbage disposal could not be fixed, presented me with several options for replacement (providing real world pros and cons of each) and had the selected equipment in his truck to immediately complete the job. As always, Michael & Sons is a pleasure to do business with. They aren't the cheapest option (though not terribly out of sync with other vendors), but the confidence you get that their work was done properly and the company will still be around if/when you need additional service, makes the tad more money spent well worth it.

Technician went over all the components of our rather complicated water treatment system - felt since we used them (Michael and Sons) frequently, and they had installed the system, that it would be considered a service call, as a courtesy.

Not well at all. Not only is their service expensive, but they have severe management problems. A technician finally called back 1-1/2 hours later, and he said he had two jobs ahead of us and couldn't get to us until the next morning, but he'd have the office call us first thing. We didn't hear from them, and I finally\ called their office at 12:30 pm. They had no record of our emergency calls; the technician did not schedule anything. When I talked to the the supervisor, she said she'd call me back but did not. I called another HVAC provider.
Description of Work: We called the emergency number three times last night because our furnace stopped working -- it's 50 degrees inside.

Where do I begin? We recently purchased a home in the Richmond, VA area, knowing that the house had not been lived in for about a year, and that we'd likely need to have all of the various systems evaluated/serviced. We ended up signing up with Michael & Son's (M&S) Home Care Agreement (Gold level - highest they have, about $400 for each zone). The home was not that old (about mid 80s), and our home inspection had not identified any major problems we'd have to address, but we still thought that having the Home Care Agreement with M&S was a good idea just in case. The agreement supposedly entitled us to priority service, inspections, tune ups, etc. so we thought it would be a good thing to do. Unfortunately for us, the problems started almost immediately. Once it finally got warm enough (late May - we moved in in April) to turn on the AC, it became clear that our AC was not working upstairs (one of our two zones - downstairs still worked). The problem wasn't caught during the home inspection because it was too cold at the time to turn on the system to test - so I can't blame M&S for that. However, when we contacted M&S to come and check out (and hopefully fix) the system, we were told that we would have to wait over two weeks for someone to come out because they were so busy. We had literally just paid over $800 for this Gold level Home Care Agreement (which included priority service in the case of emergencies), and they told us to wait over two weeks for service. I'm pretty easy going but that's ridiculous. Normally this wouldn't be a huge deal (I am the last person to complain about anything), but we had just had a baby around the same time we moved in and the temps were pretty high (90s). Because of the heat upstairs (i.e., no AC), my wife had to sleep downstairs with the baby while our toddler and I endured the heat upstairs. The heat got so bad in June (it's hot in Virginia during the Summer) that we had to go and purchase two window units so that our toddler and I could sleep at night; my wife was still downstairs with the baby. When they finally got around to us, the service rep was nice and very professional (our experience with all their service reps). Unfortunately he told us we had to replace the entire system. Sucks, but ok, how much? What they ended up quoting us was almost twice the cost of subsequent quotes (turns out this would be a theme) we got from other HVAC companies - for the same service. Obviously, we went with another company due to cost. Imagine that, we spend over $800 to become a preferred customer for M&S, and we have to go and get quotes, and eventually service, from a completely different company. INSANE! We ended up having the same cost issues with M&S' other service departments (electrical and plumbing), where we were quoted something from M&S that seemed completely ridiculous for the work required and ended up having to contact other companies for quotes (and eventually the actual repairs). And finally the reason that drove me to finally write this review... It snowed a lot today (about 10 inches). We knew it would happen so we were prepared (or so we thought). What we weren't prepared for was the fact that our upstairs heating system would not work at all -- temps upstairs were in the low 60s when we woke up. We called M&S right away, hoping that our "preferred" status would expedite things, and again we were told we would have to wait, that they would have to call us back with a time they could get to us. We waited ALL day...and no call, and no technician. We had to call again that night. And guess what, none of their techs were working anymore and we were told we would have until after the weekend. So for tonight and probably Sunday, my wife and infant son will be sleeping downstairs where there is heat. In summary, Michael & Son's Home Care Agreements are hot garbage. They provide you no value whatsoever, and certainly not $800 worth. You are not a preferred customer in anyway. You get nothing besides a free diagnostic, waived dispatch fees, and 10% discounts -- which might be nice if their costs were SO MUCH HIGHER than everyone else's. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND M&S TO ANYONE. Avoid them at all costs - they have been a complete waste of time and money. I still can't believe I paid nearly a thousand dollars to M&S and still had to use other companies. Their only redeeming quality is that their techs, when they finally get around to you, are incredibly nice and seem competent. Hopefully after reading this, you all won't make the same mistake.

Well, first of all if I would say, not only did they show up on time. When they come in the house. They put booties on there boots so that they didn't mark up the floor and he explained everything he was going to do. He was professional, polite, and well informed.
Description of Work: They do other stuff, but I've only actually used them for plumbing. I think its been over a year. They cleaned out a clog. Clogged pipes I guess. Don't remember cost.

Replacement was quick (30-45 minutes) and very professional. The plumber gave me a fixed priced upfront. While very high, I said yes to get to job done. My only issue was the outrageous price ($370) for a 30-45 DIY job.
Description of Work: replaced Kohler pressure valve on shower faucet. A DIY job except my older valve was stuck and I was afraid to put to much pressure to remove it.

They were great, they were very quick to assess the situation, they didn't create any, they did speculate, they looked and only spoke when they knew exactly what they were talking about they didn't come up with all kind of wild speculations of what it could or would or might be. They just said here I can find out boom and they check and they said there isn't any issue here it's fine and they flushed it, they did some kind of hydro-bust flush just to be absolute sure and they guarantee their work, I really really like the way they handled it I will call them from now on. I was afraid to call them because I thought they would have been more expensive but they were just the best, they knew what they were doing, I was very very impressed with them and after going through two others trying to find the issue without any long story they were just the best.

I was given a 4 hour window (10 am - 2 pm) for the technician to show up. I received a call before noon informing me that he would be there at the later part of the window. He showed up well before 2. The technician was friendly, helpful, and did his work professionally. He also took the time to explain some of the quirky aspects of my wiring system. I would hire them again without hesitation.

They said they would have to charge me over $600 for the whole pipe when I only needed 6 inches, and they would be keeping the rest of the pipe. I told them no, and fixed it myself for $5.
Description of Work: They came to fix a busted pipe. I paid for their assessment but declined to have them do the job.

There is no way I dislike about them, they don't receive the same A. I like them. I would agree with them and I would recommend them but they're just not an "A". The interaction was very good. There was a couple of little excuse, but it was fine.

The guy showed up and said yes it was leaking but could not tell were at. Said he could cut a hole in the ceiling (But was not responsable for that). I said go ahead as I am out of town. He simply punches a hole shines a flash light up and it's coming from a valve in the upstairs shower. Quotes us $1,695.00 to fix it. I ask if he can just shut of the water to the valve. Charges us $295.00 for it. I get home and purchase a valve repair kit for $24.00. Don't use this company.
Description of Work: The wife called me while I was away working out of state saying water was leaking into the down stairs. Since I was out of town I told her to call someone.

Technician did a great job of following the procedures laid out for him by the company. He did not seem to know much about the equipment. His lack of knowledge undermined my confidence in him and in this company.

We had a bad time with them. We are not very pleased with them. They weren’t up front with the cost and some of the work had to be repeated. They had to come back out a couple of times to smooth things over and it was a real ordeal to deal with them.

Salesman that came to the house promised the material they used would last a minimum of 5 years. Once they were complete it was obvious that this was not true. When company was contacted they refused to stand by what the salesman had said and would only guarantee for 1 year, and said it might last 2. When asked why anyone would pay 3 times the rate unless they were going to get something that would last 3 times a long, they had no answer. Customer service was only interested in their money, whether it made sense or not.

The company has the skills but is exorbitant in price. I was not told about a lesser service contract until I called and switched. It took young guys over an hour to figure out the thermostat. They lied and indicated they didn't have another one in the truck. I called headquarters and then the guys got a new thermostat which they installed in 15 minutes. I've worked with other companies but needed a licensed one -- had seen the ads and called. If you have the money, I suppose they are fine but you can do far better money-wise. I am stuck with this company for a year and hope they prove me wrong.
Description of Work: New HVac, A/C, heat pump, thermostat -- over $9K with service contract. VERY costly.

They're very careful when they come in. They clean up. They laid down clothes here today, carry in things. And they are very careful when they are in here to cover their shoes and that kind of thing as a courtesy thing and they follow it. I have really liked them. Excellent.

Michael & Son's response and scheduling to my initial request was most appreciated; the firm's office staff was polite, professional and efficient. The electrician, Edwin (Elias) Perez-Marcia arrived early and completed first phase of work (hanging replacement chandelier [owner provided]]) within 35 minutes; completed the installation of the surge protector also as quickly. Left work area(s) immaculate. Highly profession, and provided additional information that is well worth future consideration. Five Star Plus rating for the service, professionalism, and timeliness of this company and particularly Mr. Perez-Marcia.
Description of Work: Replace/re-hang new hanging chandelier in dining area and install whole-house surge protector.
