We called Michael & Sons to repair the plumbing work another company had done. Michael & Sons corrected the mistakes and did the work efficiently and courteously. We were very pleased with the results. They had also installed some new gas lines before for me and did a great job with that as well.
Description of Work: Michael & Sons cut pipes out, installed new lines, moved our water lines and replaced with the proper pipes. They also did some gas work for us, installing a new gas line from outside to new manifold and from the manifold to the gas furnace and then to the kitchen for our new range. The plumbing work was about $1600 and the gas work was also about $1600.

The job was done quickly and neat. There was no damage done to our walls at all. They did exactly what I wanted them to do. They were just great overall. I mean they hit the job by the nail and handled it all just like a professional, which they are. It was a very pleasant experience.
Description of Work: We have an old house that they put three new circuits in. The wires ran from the basement up to three flights of stairs.

When I needed them, I called them and they came right away. They looked at what they had to do for a while, gave me an estimate, and started to work. Everything was very fast.
Description of Work: They came to install a new hot water heater for my three bathrooms. The unit holds approximately 50 gallons of water. The one that I had was twenty years old and was ready to go. They took the old one out and replaced it in about two hours. They also worked on some of my faucets.

The technicians who install this product knew exactly what they were doing. They arrived at my residence before the designated start time. They had all the right parts and tools. They did the installation in one day. They were courteous and did not mind explaining what they were doing and how they were doing it. They clean up the job site and left everything as it was before they got there.
Description of Work: Installing a 16K Air-cooled Generator at my residence. This task required a knowledge of gas & electric codes for the proper installation of this product.

I called another contractor and they came out and said the electrical box wires weren't long enough. I called Michael and Son back after the work was done again by a different contractor and sent them a written letter spelling out my grievance. Within 24 hours their division manager called me back and agreed to refund my $259 that I had paid out of pocket.
Description of Work: Back in 2006 I had a new circuit breaker put in. Recently my dryer stopped heating clothes and there was a burning smell in my basement near the fusebox. We called them and requested that their warranty kick in. They told us to let Sears come out and look at the dryer first. After it was determined it was not the dryer we called them back and they explained to me that if it was not covered by the warranty there would be a service fee. The only option was to have the same technician (whom I had two incidents of dissatisfaction with) come out.

I just feel that people sometimes charge you more because of when you line. If I lived in Franklin. I would not of paid this much. Next time I will refuse to pay. Barter the price down.

When I was contacted by their office to confirm the time of the installation, the office staff person indicated dismay that the water heater is located on the second floor. However, I had clearly indicated that fact to Lowe's and was paying an additional $75 because of this fact. I called the Lowe's installation person who, in turn, contacted Michael and Son. Apparently, they were reassured because a representative arrived on time. He did an excellent job of first draining the broken water heater and then installing the new unit. He left the area clean and even reinstalled my smoke alarm (which he had to disconnect because it kept going off while he was working on the pipes).
Description of Work: Michael and Son does installation work for Lowe's in Gaithersburg. They accepted the job of installing a hot water heater in my condo.

Michael & Son claim to offer emergency/24 hour plumbing service. I first called at 9:15pm, to have someone come and fix a broken main water shut-off valve, that was leaking heavily. I was told a plumber would call me back immediately...45 minutes later, I called again, and was told that they didn't know where the plumber was but they would call a supervisor who would call me...still no response...finally, at 12:30pm a supervisor called. His TV was so loud in the background that I could barely hear what he said. Finally, I gave up and had the city come out and turn off the water at the street and called another plumber the following day.
Description of Work: No work performed. Company failed to respond in an emergency -- DESPITE claims that they have 24 hour emergency service.

I felt completely snookered. The problem with the washing machine was entirely minor, it was unplugged, which I could not tell because it was snug in a closet. The front light bulb needed to be changed. For each of those things, they charged me $75!! They also 'fixed' my rear light, which was light-activated, so I could not check it while they were there. It never worked. I got them to come back after many conversations with their manager, and they never fixed it, and blamed it on everything under the sun that related to me (the new light bulbs I gave them, the new batteries I gave them) etc. rather than attempting to fix it. They also promised to pull some permits for me to get additional work done on a new meter in front of my house that had never been connected by the previous owner, and took my money for that, but I had to hound them for nine months to get anything done on that. The manager had no record of the work being promised, although I had the bill saying so.
Description of Work: Shortly after I moved into my house, they checked why two exterior lights were not working, and a washing machine.

M&S is the installation contractor for Lowe's, where the microwave was purchased. Installation was pre-paid at Lowe's. Lowe's failed to get paperwork to M&S, so I had to call directly to schedule. It took several calls to the dispatcher, but company was good about working with me to get proper paperwork from Lowe's & set up time. I explained several times that the installation location was at an investment property, not my personal residence. Also, the installation address was marked on the paperwork. However, on day of installation, the technician went to the wrong address. Also, I had asked for a call 1 hour before so that I could be sure to meet the installer. As the end of the installation window approached, I finally had to call M&S to find out when the technician would arrive. Once he arrived, he was courteous, efficient, and completed the installation with no problems. Later, M&S phoned to verify that I was satisfied with the installation. I was, despite the setup snafus.
Description of Work: They installed a new over-the-range (OTR) microwave and removed and hauled away the old OTR microwave.

I called because I had a $50 off coupon. I told them I was looking for a reliable plumber. I was assured that I would be satisfied with their work. I asked for an estimate or what the set charge on it might be and was told that they could only give an estimate after evaluating it on site. When he arrived and had taken a quick look he said the set charge was $450. I decided to go ahead just to get it done even though it was too much. He took hours and two trips to get supplies and then when he finished he left me with two 8 foot long water connection lines coiled up under my sink taking up space. After all of that he still did not have the proper materials to do the job. I paid up and vowed never to call them again.
Description of Work: Replaced Kitchen sink faucet.

This experience was a nightmare from start to finish. The technician damaged all three sinks in which the new faucets were being installed. Two of the sinks ended up with noticeable chips in the porcelain; the third had a major gouge (several inches in length) in the porcelain. In addition, although he repaired the leak in the bathtub faucet, the technician reversed where the hot and cold water came out. Because he was rushing to another scheduled job, the technician left a huge mess in the master bathroom and a smaller mess in the downstairs hall bathroom. He also charged me $65 cash for a part for the hall bathroom sink that he said would be $195 if it were added to the invoice. The company sent a second technician two days later to correct the reversed hot/cold faucets in the bathtub. After a week of calls, the plumbing manager and original technician came to my house so that I could show the manager the damaged areas of the sinks. He said he would get back to me. I'm still waiting.
Description of Work: On 5/15/06 I hired this company to change the faucets in three bathroom sinks (two in master bath and one in downstairs hall bath) and repair a leak in the upstairs hall bathroom.

We called Michael and Son because our regular plumber does not have weekend hours. We received an answering service. A plumber called about 45 minutes later and came to our house about 30 minutes later. They fixed the leak quickly.
Description of Work: We had a water leak due to a rusted out supply line to our garbage disposal. Michael and Son sent a plumber on a Sunday afternoon to fix the leak.

Electrical update seems fine, although electrician was messy. Dirt all over newly painted ceiling and wires left on floor. Bath fan install was problem. Fan was vented into insulation in attic so when turned on insulation came into bathroom. When called told OK to vent into attic, not outside. They would come back and put pipe beyond insulation which is not what we wanted. Our research indicated it should vent outside. We were very dissatisfied with the company's response. The electrician, while friendly and on time left big messes, marked up newly painted walls and cut holes in wall bigger than needed, e.g. bathroom fan and boxes. We would not use this company again.
Description of Work: Updated electrical box from fuses to circuit breakers; installed bathroom fan, replaced light switch, installed outlets.

The handyman, Charlie, was polite, businesslike and efficient. His craftsmanship was quite good and color match perfectly. Micheal and Son provides Handyman Service in addition to plumbing and electrical. I was advised in advance that they have a minimum charge of $150 for handyman work. This job cost $350 including materials and labor. All in all I was very satisfied. It looks like it should work fine but we haven't had a hard rain yet to test it.
Description of Work: Added an extra downspout to help correct a poorly designed gutter system by the builder. This was not a big job, but took some skill to do it because of the location and height. I had some bigger contractors look at the job but were unwilling to do it unless they could increase the scope of the job to about $1,000 by replacing the whole gutter and downspout system, etc. Micheal and Son was not cheap but they were willing to do it without increasing the scope of the job needlessly. The downspout had to be about 35 feet high and pass through a narrow space and a hole had to be cut in the deck to accommodate it.

Very very poor. Most work had to be redone 3 times. 4 month contract still not fully met and it has been 14 months. They overbook themselves and therefore fall way behind schedule and sometimes send undertrained people to work on the project so they can at least show up. We joined Angies list in a large part due to Michael and Son Services. No longer will we trust a company without extensive research.

Very quick, efficient and courteous. When I was hesitant about my husband's ability to replace the broken cap he included his phone number on the bill so he could talk him through it, if necessary. He also answered another plumbing concern I have that could be a more serious problem.
Description of Work: Replaced a shower faucet that wouldn't turn off and was leaking. The plastic cap was broken so the plumber couldn't finish the job completely as he didn't have one on his truck. However, it was a minor thing of going to Home Depot, getting the cover and screwing it on. Price includes a 10% off discount I got in the mail.

The plumber sent by Michael & Son Services was on time, polite, and did a good job. We should have shopped it more, however, because we overpaid. Weekend installation cost $1474, but a company I heard from later in the day would have charged only about $1,000, including weekend/emergency fees.

Scheduled work for Saturday. Called Thursday to say they were coming Friday instead. We had to change several plans to make this possible. Work was not finished and just left us wondering what the next steps were. Had to call several times to reach person to let me know when inspector was coming out. City inspector came out to do inspection and connection to the outside meter box was loose. Told me to have them come fix that. It took three trips and several phone calls for them to simply tighten the connection outside. Grounding wires inside could have been run much better. Grounding outside seemed arbitrary in their location and it is in the middle of my yard vs next to the house. I do not recommend using this contractor. They also had similar issues at the BBB web site.
Description of Work: Heavy-up on my electrical panel. Went from old 100Amp fuse panel to 200Amp circuit breaker.

If I had to imagine a bigger disaster of a company experience, from start to finish, I could not. Michael & Sons is unresponsive (this is after a negotiated and signed contract), unprepared, late, unskilled and unclean. It has been mind-boggling the true difficulty of even getting someone on the phone, let alone getting someone to show up on the job site (for a scheduled appointment or to do scheduled work) at all. Overall, they are late, dangerously messy, DISORGANIZED and rude. They are the least professional and prepared contractors I have ever encountered. And this is all on a good day. I cannot recommend strongly enough AGAINST this company, in any capacity.

Service technician did not speak english very well so it was difficult to understand what he was trying to tell me about our electrical work. He had supposedly tested all of our outlets and was supposed to have gotten all the non working ones to work, but after he left we found that several were still out of service. With the new breaker box, we asked him if he was sure that the hot water heater was hooked into it and he said yes. It was not and we had no hot water. He had to come back and hook it into the box. We thought the work seemed just kind of slack even though it was eventually completed. The handyman work was refinishing the floor under our sink. It was adequately done but nothing great. If you needed an electrician you could use this company but you may or may not be pleased with them. I don't think we'd use them again.
Description of Work: Had company put in a new breaker box in our old house, check outlets and repair broken ones, put in new outlets, fixed doorbell, and did handyman work.
