Michael & Son is family owned & operated and has been servicing the Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC area for over 30 years. We take great pride in providing our customers with the highest quality plumbing services. Our professional and courteous staff are here to help you with whatever projects you need to get done.
They were fine and professional but they were overpriced. They took care of her, there were no problems at all. The price was just really high.

I have a contract with them. The reason that I like them is because I don't know anybody else for that type of service. There may be other companies but I don't have the time to search for them. I wanted peace of mind of knowing that I could call someone and be able to check. I moved in here a little over a year ago but I don't know anything or anybody here for that type of service. They said that they were annually going to check and do the maintenance for plumbing and electrical. The thing that I don't like about them is that they keep on selling you things by telling you to do something or the other. They have a list of things that they want to sell but I have not availed most of them. The only thing that I bought was the thermostat to check the temperature of the heating and air conditioning. I was happy with the person who was checking on the furnace and the air conditioning but the one that they sent this year did not do much but forgot to switch on the furnace. I did not know anything about that. Someone must have told me before but I did not know that I had to switch it back on. So, I had to call him back and ask for the first person that came last year as I liked his service very much. He told me that it was the only reason. When I called to tell them that the first person came and the air conditioning was not working. They said that I might be charged for it if there was something wrong with it but that was the reason that I got into the contract. I thought that parts were covered by it but they said that certain parts were not covered. The other reason was that they keep on changing the contract cover. If I had a way to find the other companies and be able to compare, then I probably would be able to try to make a different decision. I was happy with the technician that did the furnace last year and he came back again this year because I particularly asked for him. I would use them again in the future as I don't have a choice.

Only received an estimate for work to be done in December 2011, if possible.
Description of Work: Only received an estimate for the installation of a stand by generator. The individual was extremely professional and answers all of our questions regarding the capabilities of the generator. The estimate appeared fair and very useful for determining which or if we will have a generator installed.
Complete waste of time. Introduced delay in project.
Description of Work: Contractor responded quickly to request for an estimate to rebuild/reinforce staircase to finished basement and expand closet through adjacent dead space for additional storage. Contractor provided rough order of magnitude on site which I accepted and contractor promised follow up contract via email within 2-3 days. No further contact from contractor. I've called the company 3 times and each time the contractor promised estimate or telephonic response the next business day. Each time, contractor failed to provide estimate or contact. Although contractor provides free estimates, this experience cost me time from work and a minimum of a 3 week delay in my remodel project. The contractor lacks professionalism and efficiency. This is a red flag for me.

I think I covered everything in my comments above.
Description of Work: We needed to have a dedicated outlet put in to serve an automatic garage door opener. For the second time---first time plumbing work needed to be done--the technician did not arrive within the 4 hour window I was given. I had called with 1 hour of time left on the 4 hour window to ask if the technician would be able to get there; I was told "yes" that he had been dispatched and would be calling shortly. Approximately 5 minutes before the 4 hour window was up I received a call from the technician saying he would be there within a half hour. He did make it, but when you've committed 4 hours of time I expect them to come within that period. I thought the price was quite high for running a line from the master box to a point about 6 feet away and installing a plug for the garage door opener. However, in as much as the firm installing the opener was scheduled for the next day, I really couldn't tell them no thanks. The total time spent doing this work was approximately 1 hour. One other thing that has always annoyed me about Michael's is that the technicians always seem to find something else that needs attention. I'm very good at saying thank you for calling that to my attention and ending the conversation, but these thinly veiled attempts at getting more work get a little tiresome. I did not even let the technician give me an estimate for what he said had to be re-wired. I found it interesting that so much electrical work supposedly needed to be done since we had a new microwave and slide-in electric range installed in January and a considerable amount of electrical work was done at that time. I don't expect to be calling Michael's again. I would like to add that the technicians were very professional in their appearances and behavior.

Greg reviewed our current electrical system, provided with estimates on alternative solutions describing the advantages of each. He worked with us to find alternative solutions to the problem. Because we had a hot tub in the sun room, Greg recommended installed new circuits for the sun room, and the freezer, with appropriate protected circuit breakers. The job was done as promised in one day, with a very professional look.
Description of Work: Our sun room's electrical system irregularly popped circuit breaker. We had placed a small freezer in their, which made this unacceptable. Greg, of Michael & Sons, found that the initial installation of the sun room linked the sun room to the kitchen, so that the kitchen appliances could cause the sun room to pop off.

The tech showed up, slightly late, but no big deal. He had no idea how to repair/replace the bib, so I suggested cutting it back to the inside of the garage and putting a spigot on the inside wall - not ideal, but I could live with it, or so I thought... For roughly 30 minutes of labor and a $15 Home Depot spigot, he quoted me a price of $600!!! I told him he was out of his mind and I would do it myself. He immediately dropped the price to $325 - still way, way too much for this task, but I was busy and just wanted it done. When he came to show me what he had done I almost called the cops. If any of you have seen those "There, I fixed it!" emails going around - this was EXACTLY like something out of those photos. He installed used parts, rusty screws that weren't even driven all the way in and 3 hammered-off-to-size scraps of wood as brace material. I can't even look at it, let alone ever use the thing. I went down to the basement and turned the water off to the spigot until I can find the time to do it correctly myself. I hope the pics I will try to attach make it onto this review. If they do, they will speak volumes... Follow-up: I called the company on 2 occasions to speak to someone about how dissatisfied I was about the work and never received a return call. I called a third time and was put through to someone who answered the phone like this, "Can you hang on?" Before I could reply, he had switched back to whatever it was he was doing before my call was put through to him. I remained on hold for over 9 minutes and finally hung up. Enough.

The two electricians that came from the company were very professional. First, they laid a company doormat down and wore blue booties over their work shoes, although I insisted it was not needed, the still wore their booties. They kept me informed every step of the process on what the problem was, what was needed to fix it and the pricing. I am very pleased for the work they performed and even more grateful that they found a potentially dangerous problem. I highly recommend this company and I plan to use them for all my repairs in the future.
Description of Work: I have had several electrical shorts through out my home. The electricians from Michael and Son found that squirrels have been getting in through the roof and chewing on some of the electrical wiring. In another section of my home, they found a electrical short in the laundry room which, I credit them for potentially saving not only my family but my neighbors, as this short could have caused a fire. All the electrical shorts were found and fixed and I plan to have the companies Handymen out to make repairs to my roof area where the squirrels are coming in from.

We are planning for an eventual kitchen remodel and wanted to move our existing powder room to allow for more space in the kitchen. The company provided us with an initial estimate of $2476 to relocate our existing plumbing (water, vent stack, and sewer drain) from the existing powder room to the new powder room, adjacent to our dining room. The distance between the old and new powder room is approximately 3 feet. When the plumber came out to give the estimate the walls were already demolitioned and ALL the pipes were exposed providing clear access for the plumber to see what needed to be relocated. About half way through the job, when asked about his progress, the plumber claimed that he did not know the water line was to be relocated, although he wrote it on the initial estimate and then he pointed to another pipe which I believe he called a water riser and said, "It will be extra to remove this." He stated he was planning to leave that in place and that it was not a part of the estimate. He also stated that he intended to cap the existing sewer and water lines that sat in the middle of our kitchen. When we received the initial estimate he verbally stated that he would "...take care of all the plumbing and relocate everything". Thinking we were careful we had him write down what needed to be done. In the end we were victims of a bait and switch tactic. The plumber knowing were were not aware of all the plumbing terminologies carefully excluded certain plumbing items. When he had all the plumbing taken apart and water leaking on to our basement floor, mind you, he decided to add on an additional 1400 dollars. The only pro is that the job was professionally done, however if I would have known upfront the cost I perhaps would have chosen to either not use this provider or done something on a much smaller scale. BTW, the plumber had to keep rescheduling to finish. He started the job on a Friday and then returned the following Tuesday. He left a pipe leaking that entire time causing our floor boards to get wet and water to pool on the basement floor.

My septic alarm was going off and they said for them to come out it was $29.00. My septic alarm was going off and he came and didn't even have a flashlight or ladder or anything so he couldn't do the diagnostic. He had to use MY personal tools. He called a truck to pump out our septic. I used to pay $220 to get my septic clean, before he started he said it was $450. I showed them the receipt from the last time and he lowered the price to $220. After it was pumped out he didn't even check the tank like he should have. I asked him to do it and he said it would be $900. I told him that was outrageous to be in the tank for 10 minutes and didn't use any tools down there so I'm not sure what he was doing. He didn't give me any information as to how I can get my septic pump fix. No serial #s, no model, no nothing. I called his company and told them I'm not paying $900, they told me I could pay $700. They gave me an invoice and it sounds detailed, but all the information seems to be off guessing what he saw when he was in the tank because he had no tools. I'm not refusing to pay, but to charge me hundreds of dollars for 10 Min of not using any special equipment and not giving me any specific information as far as what model my tank and pump are, is outrageous.

Response from Michael & Son Svc Inc
Thank you for your feedback Member We have reviewed your feedback, We arrived and were able to get the member septic stable by pumping her septic cylinder. She declined to have us research a new grinder pump for her. She constantly referred to Magnolia plumbing as her source that normally helps her. The member told us that she has seen this type of loss many times before. This was our first time there to assist her. We were there with the proper equipment to view the loss and to correct her concern. She mentioned we used her personal tools. She did allow us the use of her hose but nothing besides that that was needed or used. We cleaned the drain and found two grinder pumps submerged in mud which indicate a possible crack in the casing. Her rating is some what unbelievable, since we were there at our scheduled time and her normal service company was not available to assist her. We sent two other teams to the location to make sure we could get the situation under control. The normal price was reduced to help with the first step of the process and until we completed the first step in diagnosing the problem, we couldn't determine the next steps. All of our prices are given upfront and no work is done until that is made clear and the estimate is signed by the customer to permission for us to complete the work. After the cylinder was clear, we did go inside to check the pumps and determine the next step. All work was stopped by the customer and she did not sign the estimate to replace her septic. She wanted to have us repair a job that clearly needed replacement. Again, she did tell us that she has had the septic repaired numerous times. We did tell her that in the long run she will save a lot of money by having the system replaced, but she declined the work. We conformed to all of our company polices. We arrived on time, diagnosed the problem and gave up front pricing to the member. We are very sorry if she feels that she had a bad experience. Sincerely, Vance Shepard Customer Relations Manager

My first surprise was to see that they used subcontractors which wasn't my expectation, specially from a company like M&S. The guys were courteous and I was able to get the full story from them because I am a native spanish speaker :) In the same maner I was able to understand how much mark up price I was paying just for the M&S name... but at the time I trusted that was fine, I was paying a lot more because I knew they would take care of me if there were any issues and because of the warranty (I was naive and didn't do my research comes out that 1 year of warranty on roof workmanship is NOT the standard at all and thats what was on paper). The M&S project manager was in my house 2 times to check on the sub contractor's work, of which one was to make sure I gave him the last payment, he didn't check the progress of the work in detail, I had to do that my self as much as I could (got on the roof and everything) and with my limited knowledge of roofs, of course I must have missed something, or the subcontractor overlooked something important because this came up later. A year and 5 months later... the roof is leaking in the room that is destined for my newborn girl, and some of the issues that were supposed to be taken care of I reached out to them for help, explaining my situation (the baby was born a few days before I called) the sense of urgency was not taken seriously, I was told I was going to be called back a couple of times and never happend, instead they were very clear in letting me know that my warranty was for 1 year only on the labor/workmanship and that only the materials had 25 years of warranty which was from the manufacturer.. so even if the material was the problem (which rarely is) they would still come and charge me for any repairs, including charging me for the inspection and estimate, in other words like a completely new project. Meaning, it made no difference to them, the fact that their brand new roof replacement lasted me such a short time and is leaking (with no aparent damage from an external agent) is really unacceptable, I cannot come to terms with the fact that a company like M&S can take no responsibility saying its out of warranty on a roof job that is so recent. I started looking for a new roofing company and most of them actually give way longer workmanship warranties and have no subcontracting. (see more updates below) Conclusion, paying the extra for the "confidence" factor the M&S was supposed to bring me, was pointless... I could have gotten the same job done with the same (or better) quality for 3 times less. Right now I am looking for a new roofer to come fast and fix this for me that really cares about quality and who really takes their commitment to consumers seriously. UPDATE (9/27/2011): I have consulted with various other roofing contractors/companies, not only the warranty factor is agravating given the fact that the standard in the industry for a roof replacement is at the very least 3 years (I have quotes from companies that give 5 to 10 years as well) but they have very diligently pointed out to me how the ridge vent that was installed was the lowest quality (cheapest) but it was also not the proper one for my roof. On top of that it appears to be one of the origins of the leak. Additionally, the flashing they did in my chimney is inadequate and probably is leaking as well. Water sits in the edge of the chimney, back then they told me that was OK and that there wasn't much else to do, but it comes out that is NOT OK and actually they should've installed a "cricket" to deviate water from the chimney edge out, again they subcontractor took the quick way out and did not do this either. In summary: - a new leak due to improperly installed ridge vent - failure to replace all bad plywood pieces and in consequence not addressing all leaks and accelerating new shingles decay. - improper replacement of flashing in the chimney postponing the existing leak and the list goes on... UPDATE (9/28/2011): I contacted directly the owner of M&S to see if this issue was something out of the ordinary and seeking his help in resolving this issue. He has been extremely responsive, immediately after I sent the letter to him he replied and assured me they would take care of this. Today he called me personally this morning and again reassured me I would get what I paid for and fix this for us. I appreciate a lot that he is taking care of this and shows that he really cares about his customers. I'll update this post again with the outcome of this experience. UPDATE(8/15/2012): Winter has come and gone, spring and summer have come and almost gone... after my talk with the owner, he had the guy who was in char in my project back in 2010 take responsibility and fix the issues in the roof. They came, did some of the fixes the other roorfers had recommended (specifically and more importantly replacing the ridge vent with the adequate one. But they did not do anything about the bad plywood pieces or the flashing. Never the less, the leak has not come back. They told me to try it over the fall and winter and make sure it was gone. In deed it was fixed, and then I called them because they had committed to fix the ceiling dry wall that was affected by the bad job. The person in charge was no longer with the company, yet he was extremely decent and professional and came and had one of his guys (in his new company that he started) fix it for free. So in overall this was a positive experience, although next time I will probably go with contractors that are specialized in that particular job to avoid issues like the ones i had... I have updated some of the scores, but cannot in good conscious change the scores around price and quality.
Description of Work: Roof replacement work performed: 1) removed and discarded existing asphalt shingles (two layers) and associated debris 2) provided and installed 4'x8'x1/2 roof sheathing replacing existing damaged material 3) provided and installed 30 lb roofing paper to roof sheathing surface 4) inspected existing roof rafters and ceiling insulation within the 100 SF chimney are for damage or decay. 5) Provided and installed 25 year CertainTeed asphalt roofing shingles (artic gray) matching existing in color as closely as possible. 6) Provided and installed metal flashing as required at brick chimney point. 7) Provided and installed (Black in color) aluminium ridge vent 8) Provided and installed pipe collars as required to existing vent-thru-roof vent pipes 9) provided and installed weather guard or equal ice shield and aluminium drip edge (white in color) to roof edges as required 10) cleaned up and hauled away all job related debris.

My 10 year old builder grade air conditioner stopped working Thursday of last week. I called several places who put me on their schedule for Monday to Wednesday of this week. I then found Michael and Son and called them. They were able to get a technician to me the following day (Friday). Their evaluation charge was $89 which was less than the other companies I called were charging. The technician arrived on time and fully evaluated my system. During this evaluation he showed my wife the items he looked at. He also got my air conditioner working. He told us we needed a new system and answered all our questions. He gave us three prices from $4000 to $8000 for different systems. The interesting part is he did a great job of convincing us we did not need anything but the lower priced system. No pressure to buy the higher priced units. Michael and Son charges a flat rate for their job so there were no hidden fees. I was on the fence about this deal but became convinced when the technician said he lived near us and he would personally come out to get our old air conditioner working again if it failed before the install of the new unit. He even gave us his phone number. The $89 fee was part of the new installation so we did not have two charges. He even said they would move the unit away from the window where the builder had placed it (which always made me mad). The installers showed up on time. The covered the floor area they worked on. They removed all the trash when they left. Everything was very professional. The techs took pictures of the job before and after installation. No tricks, no surprises. Everything works well. I am a happy customer and will use them again. The only thing I missed in the estimate was the actual model numbers of the equipment they quoted. It was a more general quote with features, not specific models. I was nervous about that over the weekend when I did some price checking but the crew showed up with quality parts that were exactly what they had promised.

On time for estimate - check Specified materials and possible causes for additional cost - check Began on date/time promised - check Performed all work within estimate provided - check Met deadline for county inspection - check (and worked on the weekend to accomplish it!) The boring machine broke down on Friday and there was no "gee we're sorry, see you Monday." The equipment was there on Saturday, and they worked till the promised work was complete. No mention of rescheduling the inspection. Clean-up and condition at time of completion - Excellent! Replaced sidewalk that had to be removed to do the work - yep, and I didn't expect that! Estimate - Wednesday Contract signed - Thursday Work began - Friday Work completed - Monday County inspection - Monday This is a family business, and it is obvious to me, with family integrity and commitment. That is so refreshing.
Description of Work: We had a significant leak in the service lateral that provides water to our home. I requested four estimates and Michael and Son was prompt, complete and thorough with their estimate. They replaced the service lateral from the water company main to our main shut off in the home. They were the lowest bid, specified materials - high quality materials - performed the work as promised, were able to do the work quicker than any other offeror, and followed-up to ensure satisfaction. The work was guaranteed end-to-end. I'm cynical, and I was both impressed and more than pleased. I highly recommend them.

I called to set up the estimate appointment. They were very polite and able to accommodate the date I requested for the estimator to visit my home. The woman on the phone explained the $29.000 dispatch fee that is charged to look at the job The estimator came out to the house to see the job and collected the dispatch fee, telling us we would have the estimate in a day or two. (we had two other contractors come out prior to Michael and Son and both submitted bids by the end of the next business day so this sounded like a standard turn around time). After 9 days still no estimate, I called and was told it had not been prepared and they would call the estimator, get it typed and get it to me the next day. Since they apparently did not have an interest in bidding the job I told them not to bother prepping the bid and requested a refund of the dispatch fee, as my check had already cleared. After an extended time on hold I was told that they would send a fund check. Over the next 8 weeks I called couple of times asking about the status of the refund. Each time I would hold while they checked on it and then was told I would get a call back. Finally I received a check from Michael and Son today, refunding my dispatch fee.

Very disappointed. I am no better off than before the tech came out, and now I will have to find another plumber. *UPDATE: Although I appreciate the company's willingness to make me a satisfied customer, the competence of the second tech, and how quickly he worked without lecturing me, made me realize that because it's a large company, the techs are going to vary dramatically. While I'm happy with the service ultimately provided, it was a headache to get here and I still don't fully understand the pricing structure. In the future, I think I will seek out an independent plumber who works in my neighborhood. Although they might not always be the most reliable, it's nice to build a relationship with someone so you are able to trust their pricing.
Description of Work: I called Michael & Sons to respond to a leak in our kitchen ceiling. They were able to send someone over right away and told me the emergency would mean the service charge was $89. Once the tech arrived, he seemed hesitant to actually search for the source of the leak but instead told me to take a "wait and see" approach. Then he explained that it would be another $150 just to search for the leak, including simply removing a speaker from the ceiling where the water was dripping around. I feel as though the company pulled a bait and switch on me. I plan on calling the company to get my $89 service fee back since the service call was totally useless. *UPDATE: Michael & Sons contacted me wanting to make my horrible experience "right." After lots of talking, they offered to send a tech out to investigate and fix my leak for free and although I was hesitant to use them again, I took them up on their offer. The second tech was much more competent, figured out what the problem was right away, and fixed it for me. He was going to charge me (not much, but that wasn't the agreement...) but relented when I told him I wasn't supposed to pay a thing.

Overall- I never received any service from Michaels and son and my wife and I both missed a half days work for an estimate we never received. Very disappoint in this company since they had received high mark on Angies list before!!!
Description of Work: Michael's and Son's was scheduled to do a estimate for a "Whole house" back-up generator system on the 9th of Sep 2011. I was told to be at my house from 2-6 pm to wait for the tech. At approx. 5pm I received a call from the tech stating he was running late and asked if I could reschedule till another day. He stated he would not be able to make it to my house till very late that evening. I informed him this was not not possible since I was out of town the rest of the month and had already missed a half days work waiting on them unless they could come this weekend. He said he would call the office and find out. I received a call shortly later from their office asking why I wanted to reschedule? Informed them I did not wish to reschedule, they did! The Tech then called back at 845 pm to inform me that he was about an hour away and did not think he could give me a proper estimate in the dark. He again asked to reschedule. I again said as long as it could be this weekend. The office scheduled and appointment for 0800 on Sunday morning. At 0900 on Sunday I still have not heard from Michaels and Son? I find this very unprofessional and inconsiderate way to run a business.

Michael & Son was extremely helpful in restoring our home's air conditioning system. They came almost immediately after my initial phone call (this is the first time we have used this company), had a uniformed serviceman come, and identified the problem in less than an hour. He was very courteous, very helpful in explaining options, and took care to keep the home clean (wore protective "booties"). The air conditioner was low on coolant. The serviceman cleaned the filter (it is a washable type, permanent filter), located & fixed the leak, and restored the unit to working condition. As a result of the amount of dust on the filter, which is cleaned each month, we scheduled a full house duct cleaning for the next day. This was performed with equal satisfaction, and the house is back to normal. We are so pleased with this company that we will now use Michael & Son as our regular service company.
Description of Work: Emergency service for loss of cooling due to icing of evaporator coil. Company was called and came within two hours, identified the coolant leak, restored cooling capacity, cleaned the filter and scheduled a duct cleaning for the next day.

I've used Michael & Son for plumbing and HVAC (I had to buy a new system two years ago). Their workers have been friendly, COMPETENT, and prompt. It's not the cheapest work in the world, but when I got quotes on the HVAC system, they were the middle of three -- so not the most expensive either. I have been very happy -- keep trying more of their services.
Description of Work: Plumbing -- valve replacement (inside & out) HVAC -- evaluation, installation, check-ups of system
