Description of Work: Before scheduling an appointment I clearly explained to the receptionist and then to the manager the scope of the job (re-wire an outlet and to install a hard-wired smoke detector). They refused to give me any idea about the possible charges. Two (!) men showed up. The estimate was: $182 for re-wiring (parts not included) and $376 for wiring the smoke detector. However, for drilling the wall I would have to call another technician for which I'd be charged separately. I ended up paying $29 for their visit. Don't think two minor projects would cost close to $600.

Description of Work: We called to have an estimate on remodeling our basement - we set up an appointment and no one showed up. We gave them one more chance and they did finally show up and the gentlemen not only talked down to me the whole time but basically told me we needed to lift our house to make our basement ceilings higher and to do that and remodel our very small basement would cost about 200K. Absolutely absurd.

Description of Work: They snaked my pipe to the sump pump great job. Give me an estimate for repairing water line of $14,000. $10,000 more than Haynes plumbing, which did a excellent job.

Description of Work: We had an emergency flood in our basement with water flowing out of a toilet and a bathtub that was discovered at 10:00 pm at night. Michael and Sons came right out and the technician we dealt with was great. He helped us get everything under control for the night and was back first thing in the morning to finish the job.

Description of Work: They will only talk to you after you pay $29... You can talk them out of the fee on new work, but they really try to push thier service plan.

Description of Work: The representative came to our house and provided a thorough estimate as promised. I would have used the service were it not for a contractor with a slightly better price who was also located closer to our house - should there be warranty issues.

Description of Work: We had a breaker switch go out in our electrical box and lost electrical power in part of our house. Unfortunately, it was Friday evening and we had to call for 24-Hr emergency service. The electrician arrived within less than two hours after our call to fix the problem. The only issue that I have with this company is the high price charged for the emergency call service and troubleshooting the problem. The emergency dispatch fee was $275 alone along with $181 to troubleshoot the problem plus the cost of the breaker switch. My husband already knew what the problem was and told the dispatcher the serial number on the broken breaker switch in order that the electrician could bring the right one with him. The electrician was nice and did a great job, however, in my opinion the cost was HIGH for an emergency call just to replace a simple breaker switch!!

Description of Work: On 09/12/2011 I called the "big" Michael & Sons to schedule plumbing, electrical, and handyman work. The handyman estimator did not show up, and not one single call to inform me. The plumbing department called me to reschedule for some other day; one that would be convenient for Michael & Sons. I give this big plumbing, electrical, and handyman services an "F" on all fronts. Good luck! Classical case of big does not mean better.

Description of Work: I had a leaky faucet, my regular plumber (hollin hall plumbing) doesn't work weekends, so I called micheal and son since I had just used them to move a gas line. They work saturdays, but they were all booked, so I had to pay an $89 dispatch fee.

Description of Work: The water heater tripped the circuit breakers. They spent less than 15 min. troubleshooting the water heater, found nothing wrong, then switched out the breakers. A week later the whole apt. breaker tripped. The plumber came and found the water heater heating element and thermostat were bad. I didn't want Michael & Son back so I contacted a different electrician who came and found several loose wires in the breaker panel. Michael & Sons should have found one or both of these problems and fixed them. Also, they do not post their prices or give any info re price in advance except to say that there is a $29 booking fee. Then, when they come to the house, and quote a price for a job, you are pretty much stuck with it, unless you want to send them away and call another company. They were polite, but not very good at all.

Description of Work: I contacted this company for an estimate. They promised to send someone out between 3 and 5 p.m. The employees didn't show up until almost 7 p.m., and informed me that I should've been called around 1 p.m. to let me know they'd be late. Not only had I left work early to meet them at 3, but I had already called their office several times to find out where they were, so I was not happy. Anyway, they did the estimate and left. I called back a couple days later because I had a question. I did not receive a return call, so I called again and was informed that my message was never passed on (thanks, Chelsea). I left another message and still have not heard back. Guess who's not getting my business?

Description of Work: My sump pump failed during a storm, my basement flooded and they were the only ones that I could get to come out the next day. The technician replaced my sump pump (WEB search found that the replacement sump pump cost $100 retail) I paid $750 for 40 min. of his time and $100 for the part.

Description of Work: Called Michael & Son out to investigate a broken sewer line. Representative came, sniffed, agreed there was a problem, promised to come back next day with video scope to take a look down sewer line. Appointment broken, then next day returned with video scope while only my spouse was at home. Spouse was shown a video screen with a lengthy run of broken sewer pipe. Spouse was informed that sewer line running straight out to street needed to be replaced and an estimate for more than $40k was submitted and the representative hustled out. We decided to get a second opinion, and am I glad: Another company came with a similar scope along with a sonar to discover where precisely the sewer pipe went, and to our surprise, everything Michael & Son told us was untrue: the sewer line was not broken, in fact it looked clean, it did not go straight out to the street (it went out back and to the side) and the other company left us with a videotape of the scope to prove it. Turns out our sewer line break was in a discrete line directly below the kitchen sink/disposer. We went with someone else to repair and the whole thing cost less than a quarter what Michael & Son quoted. Michael & Son, at least in this case, was either gravely incompetent, or more likely, creating a complete falsehood to take $40k from an unsuspecting homeowner.
