We contacted several contractors and Greg Marks with MW was our favorite. He was professional, had a laid out proposal and he was the lowest in cost. We also liked that their workers were mostly employed by them and not sub-contracted. Drew Marks, Greg's brother, was our project manager and was there for every single step of the process. We also liked that they assisted with design, paint colors, light fixtures, vanity options, etc. It made the entire process so easy. We were quoted a 6 week project time and they finished one week early. Yes, our house was a construction zone and we had workers there 6 days a week from 8am-5pm, but that's what you want when you have this type of project. There were no long stretches of time where the crew didn't show up. Drew kept us updated every single step of the way. If we got home and noticed something that was completed incorrectly - we emailed Drew and the crew usually fixed it the next day. No one ever enjoys getting work done to their home, but we were very pleased with MW Construction and would highly recommend them to anyone and everyone! We are actually in the process of looking for a new home and if we need anything done at our future home - we will be calling MW.

We were very happy with the work that MW Construction did on our house. Our initial project was to renovate 2 bathrooms in our 1938 brick colonial. Their cost estimate was not the lowest, but not the highest. We appreciated the fact that Greg Marks' allowances were more generous (realistic) that other contractors. We also selected MW Construction because we had several other smaller projects that we wanted to have done that other kitchen specialists were unable to do. We worked closely with Lisa, their designer, and Matt, the project manager. Both were terrific. One of the greatest challenges for us is making the many selections that go into a new bathroom. Lisa met with us at the Tile Shop and at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting to guide us through the selection process., She also came to our house to help with choosing paint colors. Having this support with bathroom design is one strong reason to go with MW Construction. Greg does a lot of work with the Tile Shop, and we were also very happy with the range of tiles that this store offered. We loved working with Matt. He met with us as needed throughout the construction. MW Construction has an excellent crew -- we were very happy with the quality of the construction. They were also very neat, and promptly had debris hauled away. We were particularly glad that we were working with MW Construction when they determined that what we thought was a small job on an earlier addition (replace a rotten window frame) turned out to be water damage to the entire side of the addition caused by an undetected leak in the roof. They were able to advise us on the most cost-effective way to address the problem, which turned into rebuilding the one side of the addition, replacing all the wood trim, and installing a new roof. We appreciated their flexibility in being able to take on this unexpected job. MW Construction stayed within their cost estimate, although we did increase the overall cost by going over some of the allowances. But there were no surprises in the cost of the project.

We hired MW Construction for our major renovation project after meeting with nearly a dozen contractors. Greg Marks sold us on their services with his straightforward style and innovative solutions to maximizing the space in our tiny row house. We had initially toyed with the idea of just doing the basement or just doing the bathroom, but decided to get it all done with at once - this was a great decision. Greg's brother Drew was the project manager throughout our project (one of the things we love about MW is that it's a small, local, family owned company). He was on site nearly every day and we met with him in-person once a week or more. He was very patient with our many, many questions and responsive via text, email and phone calls. We had a few snafus with our designer during material selection; however, during our project MW ended their work with her and hired a new designer, who made great recommendations for us. Although some part of nearly our entire house was torn up for three months, MW ensured that we could continue living there throughout the project and was respectful to our work schedules. They worked almost every Saturday and right up to the July 4th holiday to complete our project. Our one frustration would be that, at times, we wished that some "executive decisions" weren't made without us. For instance, a window in our back enclosed porch which was set to become part of the kitchen was moved a few inches to accommodate an adjustment in cabinet design that was discovered after the walls were opened. We would have been fine with moving the window if explained the situation as it occurred, but instead found out from the neighbors mentioning the fact that we were missing siding on one side of our house. Thankfully, the cost of the additional siding work was not passed on to us.There were a few instances like this where a less involved homeowner may have not cared, but this being our first reno, we would have appreciated a heads up. To their credit, MW was apologetic and continued to work on communication throughout the remainder of the project. There were also on-going issues with the HVAC and ancient duct work in our house throughout the project, which several of their HVAC specialists worked extensively on and seem to have been addressed. They finished on time and on budget, which is nothing but a miracle in the construction industry! We have recommended MW to many people since our renovation, including two who have signed contracts and now have beautiful spaces in their home. While our house has been totally renovated, we would not hesitate to use them again for a project.

we worked with MW Construction to design and then redo our kitchen in our 1940's house. the design process took longer than i expected, but working with the designer was great. she narrowed down choices for us, which was extremely helpful and we liked her style/eye for design. we often met at our house and she would bring samples along with her so we could make decisions on the spot if we wanted - no driving to giant tile showrooms and being overwhelmed. Once the construction started - our project manager, Drew, gave us a plan of what would happen over the next 4 - 6 weeks and the project stayed mostly to that schedule. The workers were courteous, always cleaned up after themselves and did high quality work. I had a million questions throughout the entire process (communicated mostly via email) and Drew always responded with the info I was looking for. The team stuck to the budget and the only reason that we were over (and not by much) were changes in product (appliances, tile, counter) that we wanted. We're very happy with our new kitchen. This was the first remodel project we had ever done, so it was important to us to find a company that we trusted and MW was just that.

I absolutely love my basement. MW Construction did a phenomenal job. Drew and Matt, the project managers were easy to talk to and kept me informed all along the way. The quality of the work is fantastic! I'm planning to redo my master bath and kitchen within the next year and there is no doubt I will use MW for those projects too. I'd recommend them highly in anyone who doesn't want to waste money, time and wants a high quality result!

Excellent workmanship by skilled builders at a fair price. I am very pleased with the garage MW Construction built for me. All of the workmen were skilled and efficient. The building went up in just a couple months. Additional storage of classic cars was needed, in an expeditious manner. Great communication throughout the job.

MWCS was a pleasure to work with. Greg Marks and his crew finished on time with my first residential project! Drew Marks, our project manager, responded to questions timely and helped with many decisions along the construction process! We contacted several contractors when considering a renovation of our bathroom and kitchen; MW won the contract by setting realistic expectations, responding to the huge number of questions we had, and giving a design that fit both our budget and our aesthetic. When we weren't happy with the way something was going, they would quickly jump in and make an adjustment until we were happy. The result is a gorgeous kitchen that looks and feels bigger, more up-to-date, with a more efficient use of space, along with a bathroom that works great for our three kids. I would definitely use them again.

My husband and I found Marks-Woods Construction (MW) online and went with their Yelp, HOUZZ, and Angie?s List reputation as a guide. We were looking to remodel a home we just bought and wanted an entirely in-house design and build team to handle the project. After consulting with other companies, we were drawn to MW because of their progressive approach to the design-build process. We are a young couple and other companies didn't take our needs very seriously thinking we wouldn't have much business to offer, but the MW team treated us with respect. Greg Marks initially greeted us with a friendly smile and extensive construction knowledge. Greg sent a very detailed proposal days later and we signed the contract a week later. Less than six months later we were moving into the home of our dreams and they still keep in touch with us to make sure everything is looking good!

MW?s team of designers, project managers, subcontractors, and staff are all passionate pros in what they do. From initial design, to shopping for materials, to demolition and construction, MWCS held to the schedule they provided allowing us to know exactly what was going to happen each week. They communicated any issues or changes as they happened. All throughout the project they kept the work area clean on a daily basis. The kitchen remodel was finished on time and looks amazing! MW Construction is a great choice for a busy working professional. They accommodated my schedule for design appointments and took the time to understand my goals. I felt very comfortable with the management team, in-house carpenters, and subcontractors. I appreciated their focus on minimizing disruption to the condo unit and another tenants. Additionally, their focus on client satisfaction and continuous improvement is refreshing. Well worth every penny spent.

MW was one of 3 firms I contacted about remodeling our half bath in the MBR to add a shower. Of those firms MW was by far the most responsive and enthusiastic: people arrived when they said they would and sent materials when promised. As we talked about options, the project grew--but at our request; MW never tried to push us. The project started at $33,000 and grew to almost $45,000, but that's because we decided to convert the linen closet to a laundry closet with a stacking washer/dryer. Drew was our main contact, and despite the change orders never lost his cool. The designer, Erin, has been a critical part of the process; she looked at our furniture, asked a lot of questions, and then guided us in selecting tile, flooring and paint colors. The project is almost done, so we haven't moved into the new spaces yet, but we are delighted with the layout and feel and can't wait to live there. In fact, we've already decided to use MW again when we remodel our kitchen next year.

Great! We've used MW for the projects (adding a second bathroom and remodeling our kitchen) and they always do excellent work for a fair price. They are easy to work with and responsive. They have good ideas for how to work around the oddities of an old house like ours. They attend to a lot of little details that never would have occurred to me, or to a lot of other contractors, from what I've seen. The MW carpenters, painters, and other employees are professional and courteous They do good work and they clean up after themselves. They went above and beyond the call of duty to help me accommodate houseguests in the middle of the project (the basement serves as our guest room). You can tell the finished product is excellent quality, and everyone who comes to our house comments on how good it looks and what a good use of space it is in our small house.

Greg (partner in the firm) came for a site inspection a few days after my inquiry. He provided a detailed written quote the following week and was prepared to start work a couple of weeks after I accepted his quote and signed the contract. His price was very fair, and the work was performed in reasonable and prompt time and professionally by he crew. The quality of the job was excellent. I will likely use this firm for future projects should they arise.

MW Construction was one of five contractors we had provide estimates for a kitchen, master bath, and fireplace remodel for our new home. We wanted good quality product and work but without going over the top. Greg was professional, very personable, and seemed to get exactly what we wanted. Greg came to our house on 2/19/15 he was very helpful with design ideas and very knowledgeable - after meeting him he became our first choice. He turned around a proposal within one day however their initial pricing was 5 - 10% higher than the other four estimates we received. When we tried to communicate that they were higher but we would like to work with them they responded with a proposal that gave us entry level cabinets. We spoke to him on March 3rd to ask a few more follow up questions and he followed up after the call with another email. Our issue was it seemed like we weren't going to be able to find a middle ground on product quality and be at a price that was competitive with the other bids we received. In hind sight we may have been better off going with Greg as the contractor we chose has attempted to change order us to death and does not have the same communication skills that Greg displayed through the bid process.

Greg and Drew Marks made the experience easy for me, but Drew was my primary contact. They came out and listened to what I needed done and came up with a design for a combination laundry and office, extended kitchen, and added a master bedroom. The design was what I always wanted. Before the construction part started, I picked out most of the items which included kitchen cabinets, bathroom tiles, etc. They kept me informed of the progress and when things were going to be done. Since I had to stay in the house during construction, they ensured that when they removed part of the house walls, that the house was secured. The workers were very polite and considerate to me. At the end of the day, they would always clean up before they left. The addition was suppose to take five months to finish ahead of schedule. It was a nice Christmas gift. Since the addition, they finished doing the front porch and painted the inside of the original house. Very pleased.

Although we didn't get any work done to our attic (it was far more complicated and expensive than we had thought it would be), I did want to say that Greg from MW Construction arrived on a Saturday to provide us with an estimate. He was right on time, very helpful, and seemed very reliable.

My wife and I hired MW Construction Services LLC to remodel our kitchen in January 2015. We were very lucky to have chosen MW Construction to complete the work. It was truly a pleasure to work with the MW Team throughout the entire process from start to finish. A major renovation such as the one we undertook could have been a very arduous task had we hired anyone else to do the job. The MW Team has the knowledge homeowners are looking for from years of experience to get the job done right the first time. We were very impressed with the craftsmanship of the work performed and attention to detail they had with all of the finishing work. There were no corners cut during construction and it definitely shows in the finished product. They are nice and honest people to work with from the Operations Manager, Greg Marks to the Project Manager, Drew Marks and all of the construction crew and subcontractors we worked with. After receiving a couple other estimates, MW came in with a very competitive bid for our kitchen project. Given the estimate price and the amount of positive reviews on Angie?s list and other sites we decided to hire MW. Greg had many good ideas on how we could update our space and thoughtful recommendations on brands and types of materials we should be using in the kitchen. The project started and finished on- time and within the budget on the signed contract. The construction crew cleaned up after themselves each day and minimized the effects an active construction site can have on the house. Overall, we are satisfied with the work performed and highly recommend MW construction for any home improvement project you may have. A scope of the work performed by MW included full demolition of the kitchen to include removing two kitchen walls to open up the space to the living and dining room, constructing a breakfast bar, installing new insulation, wallboard, new electrical wiring, outlets and fixtures, installing all new plumbing, Kraftmaid cabinets, floor and backsplash tile, appliances, granite counter tops, sink, moldings, trim and all finishes.

The team at MW did a great job with my bathroom remodel! It was a big job (to me), as it required reconfiguring plumbing and - since it is the only bathroom in my house - I had to move out for most of the work. I talked to 7-8 contractors before hiring MW, and I immediately felt like MW (Greg) knew exactly what they were talking about. The design process was easy, and the MW team was very helpful along the way. The project itself got a bit of a late start because of snow, but after that everything was on-time and on-budget. When a few issues arose (as will happen with any project), Drew and his team were very responsive and helpful in figuring out a solution. The workers were careful, polite, and always cleaned up each day. All in all, I was very pleased with the experience. Perhaps most importantly, the bathroom looks stunning, and I am thrilled with the outcome. I would definitely use MW again and have already recommended them to my neighbors.

Over 2 projects, I?ve spent $100+k with MW with a total cost in excess of $130k from 2013-2015, and I recently hired them for $65k of work to remodel the interior of a townhouse. Summary Pros: - Quality of work is very good. - Pricing is competitive. - Can address multiple interior and exterior needs. - Flexible with modifying scope and changes in projects. Other contractors interviewed were not as flexible. - Can coordinate with other contractors (in my case for the flooring). - Provide help for design decisions based on experience. MW tells me they're now actually offering a design service and will have a showroom near Old Town Alexandria soon for certain products (like cabinets). I think this will definitely help future customers. Cons: - Project didn?t have a set schedule and work was sometimes done with short notice. This wasn?t a big problem for me, but I can see where this could be a problem for some people with large projects. - Organization of contracts and payment expectations can be a little confusing with change orders, but not inaccurate and made sense once the strategy was explained. MW said they've already used my experience as an example and are working to improve the process, so hopefully that will help future customers. Would I hire MW Construction again? Yes. Every project is really unique and has it's own challenges - mine was no different. Was everything done perfectly at first? No. But MW worked with me to get it right, and was great to work with all along the way. This project lasted from September 2014 until the end of January 2015. With the large amount of scope, multiple contractors, and new scope I added during the contract - I think MW did a great job. I believe you have to have patience with larger projects. Did I loose patience on occasion? Yes. But this was really more due to the process than MW, and everything was completed to my satisfaction and now looks great. I'd definitely recommend MW Construction to friends/family.

Overall very happy with the quality, speed, and design-construction completed by MW Construction. Their attention to detail was high, which shined at the end of the project. The before & after photos are remarkable, which have family & friends that have seen the final product in shock. "This can't be the same house!", but yes it is! My wife and I were able to see MW's vision of the finished product at the beginning of the process, because of the detailed plans and renderings that were presented. This combined with the rave reviews and the professional manner the interview was presented, made our decision to hire them quite simple. Everyone we delt with was professional and patient. True people performing great work.

Though work started right after thanksgiving, it wasn't "complete" until this summer because things had to be redone to fix issues resulting from installation mistakes and shortcuts. Would have been very patient, but there was a lot of unprofessional comments and disrespectful personal comments by the owner to me. I would point things out, he'd say it is a punchlist item, and for those things he didn't address (like the uneven tiling), at the punchlist he said it was too late to fix something and I should have spoken up earlier. What? I had to follow up by email many times because they were so unresponsive and failed to follow through on calls, but they didn't want to put anything in writing. Instead of fixing the issues with what was in the contract, they "went over and above" in areas I could have done myself, without talking about it, and then got mad at me for not being grateful. At one point, they tried to get me to sign a non-disclosure agreement in exchange for a longer warranty on the workmanship when we were trying to negotiate what needed to be fixed--literally signing on that I would not post a review of the services rendered. I did not sign, but did contact Angie's list on this, to see if these kinds of clauses could be considered in the ratings because it seemed really sneaky. The bathroom: I had to pick out fixtures three times because the company failed to start ordering, and things went out of stock. The company did NOT review the material specs I sent to make sure they'd work (despite them assuring me they had), so I took a loss on some. Design aspects we agreed on did not happen--for example, they failed to install tile base to the side and back of the vanity, which stands on legs. There is now a gap up to a 1/4 inch where they didn't install tile that far back either, and the baseboard is cut into one of the sides of the vanity. The tile was inappropriately installed in the floor and the shower--mismatching grout mixes, and the grout actually washed out in the first four showers. Instead of replacing the decorative tile mosaic, and over my objections, the company used a dremel to pull old grout out, put in new grout (of non-matching colors), and damaged most of the mosaic tiles in the process. Company failed to seal the tile and fixtures--appears this was forgotten--and there were bits of sponge dried in the grout after the repair. The wrong recessed light was used, and had to be replaced to avoid a fire hazard. The mirror was scratched on install. Flooring subcontractors threw hardwood waste in the new bathtub and shower without any protective covering. This was supposed to be my dream bathroom, and I spent a lot of money and time, so seeing the shortcuts and damage caused by careless actions really hurt. The reinforcement and subfloor repair: I was extremely happy with this work--turns out it was done by the inhouse guys. Unfortuantely, they didn't replace or smooth the subfloor across, which caused major issues for the hardwood install. Hardwood install: They used subcontractors who where rough with our stuff, used the wrong fasteners, didn't follow the instructions, and ended up damaging the floors during install. I had a flooring inspector take a look, and they pointed out that most of the instructions were not followed. I paid a premium, and there was no racking, subfloor wasn't leveled, and there were cracks and areas up to six feet where they filled gaps in with woodfiller in high traffic areas. MW agreed to redo the floor for no charge because it fell under the workmanship waranty, which was great, but in the process had to deal with a lot of unprofessional comments, and they put it off for MONTHs, so long that the flooring wasn't available and it added time because it had to be shipped in. Lighting installs: Installed two ceilingfans with lights. Damaged one of the switches on install, and one fixture moves when you turn on the fan. Ultimately it is my choice to live with things that are still off--I'm saving up money to hire someone else to do the small repairs so I don't have to deal with the principal anymore. If you go with them, make sure to get in writing that INHOUSE folks will do the work. Stuff that was done by inhouse staff was all topnotch. Unfortunately, that didn't include the flooring, plumbing, or tiling for me. I think they're probably a great company who just signed on too many jobs, and assume from the other reviews my experience is NOT typical. I understand they let go of the person who was supposed to make sure things got done on my job, and the person who led the flooring replacement was fantastic. I only wish I'd had that experience for the first seven months and that the experience didn't take nearly a year from start to complete.

We couldn't be more pleased with our experience. Our family is more than excited about our new bathroom and kitchen. We had the pepto bismol pink bathroom tile so it was time for a new look. The kitchen had soffits and vinyl tile flooring. Now both spaces are completely remodeled with the latest in design elements. MW team members were friendly and knowledgable. My husband actually seemed sad to see the projects come to an end (he is a self proclaimed contractor :)). We recommend them to neighbors and friends.

My wife found the MW Construction group on Angie's List and HOUZZ. After interviewing various design-construction companies we selected them to design and construct a space that provides a gathering place for our family and friends. We initially met with Greg Marks who quickly provided a detailed proposal and valuable design ideas that help steer the direction of the finished product. We actually used Greg's vision for a scope for the other contractors to use as a guide for their respective bid. Greg met us at various suppliers and help us select all of the materials for the project. Once this was completed, Matt Galassi was brought on to manage the project. Matt has extensive construction experience that helped us understand how the pieces of the construction puzzle goes together. The project went smooth and the finished space looks unbelievable.
