I had kept a flyer from Mailbox Xpress for several years, knowing it would need it. I visited their website to see if the offerings were still valid and learned I could still get the box and post my HOA requires. I called Mr. Hughes to see if installation was included, and learned that it was. As a result I placed an order with him, one he promised to fill within one or two days, which was fine with me. The following day he delivered and installed a high-quality post of painted seasoned wood without cracks and with all the joints caulked before painting, and set in concrete. He mounted a steel mailbox to replace the plastic box the unnamed prior vendor supplied ten years earlier, mounted the required house numbers on both sides, and touched up the paint. The box looks great! Mr. Hughes was courteous, friendly, and easy to work with. And as work orders kept him more than busy and I was the last customer of the day, he did my installation at about 8PM, long after other would have gone home, but I still got an installation much better than both the two previous (one the builder's original, the second by my neighbor after her guest backed a car over it).
Description of Work: Replaced my deteriorating mailbox and post with a new, better-quality installation.

What a great experience! Did a wonderful job recommending package to use and advised on care of post. Properly identified with street number and also ID of street number inside the newspaper box. He was 100 percent on schedule and truly cared about the customer first. I would recommend the company to anyone. I did have difficulty finding the company on Angie's List, it should be the go to company in this market given pricing, courtesy and professionalism provided to customer.

It was a pleasure to work with Jim Hughes who is the owner of Mailbox Xpress. He responded quickly with a phone call to an email that I had sent him. My mail box pole had rotted away and fallen over so I did not have a mail box. A neighbor said that if I bought all the materials he would install it for me so I watched a UTube video on mailbox installation and headed to Loews to purchase all that I needed. After stops at Loews, Home Depot and a local hardware store it was evident that I was not going to find the quality or even the materials that I was looking for so I decided to search Angie's List for mail box repair. They made it difficult to find Jim's company but I am glad that I looked a little deeper. Jim did an excellent job. He took the time to answer my questions, offer suggestions and install just what I needed. Due to the fact that I had no mailbox he made my job a priority and came the very next day. He even came back the following day to install numbers on the pole. The finished product is wonderful and has a lot of curb appeal along with functionality. I am very pleased and recommend Jim to anyone needing a mailbox. I wish Angie's List would unblock his listing. He takes pride in his work and really goes the extra mile to please his customers.

A short note of satisfaction concerning Mr. Jim Hughes of Mailbox Xpress, Inc.. Mr. Hughes arrived shortly after our phone call. He examined the existing post and told us it was satisfactory and replaced our damaged mailbox expeditiously with a more substantial one at a very reasonable cost. We recommend Mr Hughes and his service without reservation.

I know Jim for years now. No other company comes to mind when dealing with mailboxes. He is a great professional who delivers top quality of materials, as well as a professional install. He is a great person, goes out of his way to get things done and shows up at the time agreed upon. I can't recommend him more. THANK YOU AGAIN, for the great job!

Jim was very responsive to my queries regarding his services and provided a good price for our original request of a set of four standard boxes for our pipestem. When he first came out to review the requirements, he talked to one of my neighbors who already had an oversized mailbox and indicated that he would prefer not to go down to standard size box. Jim realized that three standard boxes and one oversized would look awful but was reluctant to raise his originally quoted price to cover the difference for four larger boxes so he provided us with a new quote that split the difference between the original cost and what it would normally cost with four oversized boxes. We accepted the new quote and are all absolutely thrilled with the new set of boxes. The look great, work great and everything is top notch quality. When my family and I drive through our neighborhood we look at the other similar sets of mailboxes and the difference in quality is often readily apparent.
Description of Work: Jim replaced four mismatched and decrepit mailboxes for our pipestem with one set of four matching mailboxes on a single set of posts.

Description of Work: Jim had replaced all of the mailboxes in our community about 6 years ago. We couldn't be happier on how great the new boxes and posts gave the neighborhood. One of the mailbox doors broke off and Jim was there the same day of being called. He replaced the box and everything perfect again.

After over 20 years of faithful service, including a hit by a trash truck and near misses by the paperboy and pizza delivery, our mailbox post was gradually but rapidly eroding away. For weeks, I had been searching online for a company that both sold and installed a mailbox and post. I had no problem locating product or installer but when I finally came across Mailbox Xpress I was so relieved to learn that although the business is located in Virginia, the owner was willing to come all the way to my home in Annapolis MD to perform the required work. I couldn't be happier with the product or the service and when you consider the separate cost of supplies and installation, the price can't be beaten. I was skeptical when we set up installation for 6 AM. It's not even light at that time of morning. And the weather, not ideal for any kind of outside work. But, as promised, the work began on time. Driving almost 50 miles one way, in the dark and drizzle, this man is serious about keeping his customers serviced and happy.

I can't recommend this vendor highly enough! I had been trying for years to get my curbside rural mailbox to stand up straight and within the USPS guidelines, but whoever had installed it originally had done a lackluster job. I contacted Jim Hughes at Mailbox Xpress, inc., and he came out when we had arranged and replaced both the mailbox and the post. I immediately noticed the difference: the post now stood up straight and the mailbox was where it was supposed to be for the rural carrier delivery. There was a five-year guarantee on the installation, but this has lasted for at least a decade, with no leaning or major deterioration. The mailbox itself is of a higher quality than I could find, even now, at either of the two large "hardware" stores near me. I ran into Jim today while he was installing a neighbor's mailbox, and I asked him where I could get a quality mailbox like his, as the paint on mine is quite weathered, and he said I don't need a new box and that he'd come by and repaint the box for free because he "loves his customers" and likes to maintain a happy customer base.

This is the second time we have gone to Mailbox Xpress for a mailbox installation, and we would continue to use and recommend this company for any mailbox work. We first went to Mailbox Xpress a few years back at a previous Northern VA residence, after someone backed into our mailbox and pretty much destroyed it. My neighbors recommended Mailbox Xpress and so I contacted them from their website. The owner, Mr. Hughes, contacted me the same day. We discussed replacement options, and he came out the next day and replaced the mailbox. We went with one of his Pineapple posts that time and it came out great. On this occasion, we were replacing and older post / box setup. I had already ordered a mailbox top from another vendor, and contacted Mr. Hughes to provide the post and do the full install. As with the previous job, he was quick to reply, and quick to do the install. What I appreciate about Mr. Huges is the care he takes in his work, and in assisting his customers in selecting what fits their house / neighborhood. In this case, he used an alternate support beam to match the style of the box top, and recommended options for the type of numerals used on the post to color match the top. If you want to take the time to describe to Mr. Hughes what you want to the setup to look like, he will work to provide options and suggestions to get you the mailbox / curb look you are going for. I also prefer to support local business providers, and appreciate that he is a long time Northern VA business owner.

Called Jim on a Football Sunday afternoon to fix our rotted out custom wood mailbox and he arrived within hours to take measurements and created a temporary fix. Jim sent pictures of the progress next day and said he'd return to replace all parts after the rain stopped. Jim's craftsmanship for custom cut mailboxes is outstanding! He made it match perfectly to the HOA style in our community. He installed his custom wood box, refilled our entire post, and painted everything to match. Jim returned to add an additional coat of paint and rebalance and re-level the mailbox with additional concrete. Our mailbox now looks outstanding! It's amazing how attention to detail really makes a difference to our communities curb appeal. His communication with us has been outstanding, he seriously loves his job and making his customers happy, it was a very pleasant experience just talking with Jim and having him explain everything he was going to do. Jim's pricing was extremely reasonable especially for a custom Job like ours.

Our trusty old mailbox had a run in with an SUV and the post was slammed to the ground and the mailbox sailed all the way across the yard. After not being terribly impressed with the options at Home Depot and Lowe's we where reminded of a company that had put out flyers a couple of years back. We went to look them up online and checked all the reviews. After considering the price and glowing reviews we decided to give the company a call. Prepared for the usual impersonal and uninterested response that one usually finds we where most pleasantly surprised to find the owner very friendly and willing to squeeze us in for an install the very next day. He was very thorough in asking what we needed and making sure we where happy with our choice. There was no pressure to up sell at all or make us choose what was convenient for him to provide. The next day arrived and sure enough the owner showed up and made a very pleasant introduction and proceeded to get to work. We had asked for the $159 base model and the post and mailbox where of excellent quality. He set the post in concrete and explained he was working on another job and would be back shortly after the post had set. He was kind enough to use phillip screws so that we could detatch the mailbox easily later if we decided to paint the mailbox and spray painted the interior for a uniform look. Well before the postman arrived he was back and placing the finishing touches on the mailbox. In addition to adding a little extra concrete since the post had to be placed closer to the street much to the joy of our mail lady I would imagine! After finishing the install instead of grabbing his money and running he was kind enough to talk about the mailbox and post. Offering several recommendations and suggestions for maintaining the wood so that it would last as long as possible. Also explaining how he takes the time to season the posts properly himself. Never at any point did he pressure us to pay right away and even several times stated we could pay later. The owner is extremely passionate about his job and from my first impression provides an excellent service and believes in customer service. Which in this area can be at times can feel like a foreign concept.

Jim was prompt and responsive in setting a time to come by to install a new mailbox and remove our old vandalized one. Our old mailbox post was installed in a concrete slate that was difficult to remove but Jim went above and beyond in getting it done. He also sawed up the old post to make it easier to dispose of. Most importantly, he took the time to answer our questions and generally thought he was responsive. I would highly recommend him.

Jim is very personable and he did excellent work removing the old mailboxes and posts, installing the new and cleaning up. While he was doing my parent's installation yesterday, my Dad expressed some concerns about the lawn care company damaging the new post with their trimmer, so today when he installed mine, he left plastic guards for the bottom of both posts (I use the same lawn care company) to protect them from damage. Very nice of him. He also called my parents today after installing mine to make sure everything was okay as he was holding on to the two checks my parents gave him until he knew we were completely satisfied. The price for my parents was $184 and mine was $185 because I got a brown box (instead of the basic black). We would definitely use him again (not that we'll need to for a good, long while) and will certainly pass his name along to others.
Description of Work: My parents hired him to install a new mailbox and post for them and as a birthday gift to me (one of the most useful gifts I've received), they hired him to replace mine as well. Yesterday (8/31/15) afternoon he removed the old one and installed the new one at my parent's house and today (9/1/15) he did the same at my house while I was at work.

This is not a joke. I still can't believe that this happened. I am a police officer and a military veteran, and I have seen some strange and disturbing things in my career, but this incident rivals any of them. Everything I have said here is 100% true and correct. The provider admitted to doing all of these things in a message to me on this site (however, he still blames me for his actions, claiming I insulted his company, and says what he did was "only fair"). I have also provided photographic evidence (of the blood-splattered envelope as well as of my "new" mailbox) to Angie's List in reference. In summary, I ordered a service via this site. The service was provided and paid for, and I was very happy with the results. Then, almost 2 weeks later, the provider, who was unhappy with my initial review that gave him all As and one B, returned to my house (he drove from Virginia to Maryland) without my request or consent, removed the mailbox and post that I had paid for from the ground, and replaced it with a substandard one. During the same trip, the provider tapes the refund check (that I didn't ask for or want, I wanted the mailbox that I got and was completely happy with) to my front door along with a message covered in blood that referred to me as a "bully" and a "p***." This is completely inappropriate and unprofessional behavior for anyone, never mind an alleged "businessman" who advertises for customers on this site. This has been a ridiculous and unbelievable hassle (if it hadn't happened to me I would not have believed it at all) that has completely defeated the whole purpose of using this site to replace my old mailbox in the first place. I did not even want to revisit these events by updating this review, but I felt it was my duty to do so in order that the Angie's List membership is made aware of this provider's "business practices."
Description of Work: The provider initially installed a very nice mailbox in the ground in front of my house (on 8/16/15). Then, after I gave the provider a "B" rating for the price category (in a perfect world I would have liked the price to be a little cheaper, all the rest of the categories were given As, and I was still very happy with the results), the provider physically came back to my house 13 days after installing the mailbox (on 8/29/15, right after my initial review was posted to this site), took the entire mailbox and post out of the ground (without my request or consent) and then left a used mailbox partially screwed to a plain wooden 4x4 in its place. The provider then taped an envelope to my front door with a check inside refunding me the amount of the service. The envelope was splattered with the providers blood (as was my front storm door and my driveway; he claims he cut his hand during this completely unnecessary exercise), and written on the envelope was a message from the provider calling me a "bully" and a "p***." It should be noted that the letter B in the word "Bully" written on the envelope was in quotation marks.

Response from Mailbox Xpress Inc
When is 100% the truth, not the whole truth and nothing but the truth? This client originally contacted me through the Angie's List message center to inquire if my company would be willing to do a mailbox and post installation that was way out of my normal service area. After many conversations, the customer sent me photos of 2 posts from his neighbors replaced mailbox and posts located on the opposite side of his pipe stem driveway and asked if I could duplicate the style of post with a plastic mailbox. I informed him that I did not normally install or carry plastic mailboxes, as I do not consider them the best option, but agreed to provide one because he was adamant about wanting a plastic unit. He then proceeded to inform me that he currently shared a post with his neighbor and asked if I could also fix their former post and install his new post in a different location from his neighbor as the client told me that him and his neighbor had "issues". I agreed to perform that service for him even though his residence was way outside my service area, 150 miles away, only because he was an Angie's List client and told me that he would write a favorable review on Angie's List upon completion of the work. I charged the client the same $184.00 (as I normally charge for a painted standard post, even though his post was customized to match the other neighbors) for the entire job including the additional work of fixing his neighbors old setup and installing a new plastic box for her that was unused new stock that I would never sell as it was solely a demonstration model. After I had fixed his old post and had installed the demo plastic mailbox on it for his neighbor and was digging the hole for his new post, she came out to walk her dog and informed me that she had already made arrangements to have the dilapidated post replaced the next week by another company. I then removed the demo mailbox and attached her old mailbox securely on the post that had previously been held on by a coat hanger. I completed the installation, left the demo plastic mailbox by his garage that I had brought for his neighbor, collected his payment from under his doormat and was one my merry way. Mission Accomplished! After anticipating another wonderful review on Angie's List for 10 days, I called the customer to ask him about the quality of the installation and inquire why he had not posted the review as promised. He assured me that he would be glad to take care of that soon. Imagine my surprise when the customer posted the price as $200.00 and a short comment of "mailbox looks great". I informed him that I was not happy with a "B" for the overstated price and the understated quantity of work I had performed 150 miles away. He told me in a perfect world he thought things should be cheaper. This was the first mention that pricing wasn't fair. P.S. I have not raised my prices in 8 years, so in his perfect world where he thinks things should be cheaper, the world still requires soldiers and policemen. I knew in all fairness to my past customers that have paid the same price for a non customized post within my normal service area, and with a 5 year warranty included, that in respect to my past customers and personal respect for the fair market value of my company's work, I had to return his money to him. Upon removing the old post and in my haste to reinstall a temporary 4x4 post and a used, but not abused, temporary mailbox of the same metal quality I use for all my clients, I unknowingly punctured my left thumb. Please note that I have lost finite feeling in my fingers on my left hand from handling arsenic based pressure treated wood and have sought medical advice for the condition. I then proceeded up his long pipe stem driveway and upon taping the envelope on his front door, I realized I was bleeding. On the envelope I wrote: "Total Refund", "Go "B"ully someone your own size", "PUNK" and left quickly as I did not want any contact with the customer. I have had 5 major operations for diverticulitis in 10 months, the 1st being December 19, 2013, and the last being September 15, 2014, so returning the $184.00 was hard as I have felt the financial drain of almost a year off work. I value and appreciate all the kind reviews my company receives constantly, and you can read them on Angie's List only by looking my company up in the search box as Mailbox Xpress, Inc. I feel I have been tried, convicted, and sentenced improperly, as I love my customers and felt I needed to respect the value of the quality of my company's work and the fair price my customers happily pay for that work. That is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth! Jim Hughes, President, Mailbox Xpress, Inc.

When I first called Jim to tell him we were moving to a new house, he suggested that we wait until after the move to replace the mailbox. He said that in his experience, during moves sometimes mailboxes would be damaged by trucks or delivery people. He was willing to come out the same day if I insisted, but suggested waiting a few weeks might be a good idea. In fact, he was exactly right. During the move one of the trucks hit the mailbox post, making it even more unstable than it already was. Then, after our move, Jim came out just as promised with one of his signature pineapple postboxes. On taking a look at the color of our house, he even suggested a color scheme that would look better than what I had originally thought of in front of our property. He also kindly offered to put the new numbers on that I had bought at Home Depot. Jim takes pride in his work, and deservedly so. Of the more than a dozen contractors that I worked with during our recent move, Jim was the most pleasant and responsive. I've already suggested him to several neighbors who admired our new mailbox. It's amazing that you can find someone who specializes in this and is really good at it. Thank you Jim and thank you Angie's list.

Jim arranged to do the work within one day of the request! He scheduled to perform the work while I was at work, which is great in my busy schedule! He did an excellent job of removing my old mailbox breaking it down and putting it in my trash can for pick up. He installed the mailbox I purchased and then went further by attaching my house number, which I had not requested! He re-positioned the mailbox in a better location to prevent "me" from hitting it when I back out of my driveway every morning! I would highly recommend him, and hope to use him in the future for other jobs! Thanks Jim!

Easy summary is "exceeded expectations." After futzing around for a few weeks, I send an email Friday to the website address. Got a phone call back within 2 hours. Jim was bummed that he was in my town but he had already sold the extra posts he kept in his truck, so he offered to come by the next day, Saturday. We discussed how to make payment and I expected to perhaps see him the next day as I came and went on errands. Imagine my surprise when, a couple hours later as we were getting ready to take the dog for a walk, she looked out the front window and said someone was digging out our old mailbox. Jim was outside digging out the post hole for out replacement mailbox. I don't know where he got the replacement post, but there he was, about 5 hours after my original email putting in the new mailbox. I have never, NEVER been visited by a tradesman who was so passionate about what he does and exceeded my expectations.by so much. Jim could give lessons! GM
Description of Work: Replaced my standalone mailbox.

Very good communication and very fast response. The post was installed the day after I called (it rained the day I called). There is a wide selection of mail box posts available on his website. We also received additional help with a french drain that needed to be patched at the curb near our mail box.
Description of Work: Removed existing mail box from post, installed a new post with reflectors and re-installed existing mail box on new post. Also did some additional concrete patching for a french drain that comes out at the curb near the mail box.

This is service with a capital "S". I called Jim on Monday, and the job was completed by Tuesday! The quality of the post and mailbox is excellent, and it is indeed the nicest one in the neighborhood. The work comes with a five year guarantee. I felt that my business was really appreciated by this company-they treated me as if I were family. Jim is an interesting person to talk to, and shows pride in the quality of his work and service. I would recommend this company to everyone!
Description of Work: Jim removed the old mailbox and post, replaced it with a beautiful new mailbox and post, re-positioned it so it would not be hit again.

This was one of those great service experiences. Jim was quick to respond to my first enquiry by email, then very responsive and helpful by phone when we went over the project. He committed to coming on a weekend to remove an old mailbox and post and install a new pedestal mailbox. He was very knowledgeable, pleasant and reliable both in his advice and his work. He installed the new mailbox beautifully - returning after several days once the concrete had set to finish and clean up the job. I wholeheartedly recommend this provider (Thanks so much for your help, Jim!).
