Prompt, competent, professional services all around from the entire team. Tom, the owner, provided a complete assessment of our roof, to include pictures, and explained all available options. He provided roofing samples, along with pictures/references of previous work so that we could actually see the finished product. Our project was completed on time and clean-up occurred every day. We couldn't be happier with the entire experience and would highly recommend this company.

I didn't end up hiring these guys, but it was because they were the only roofing company to call me and give me an honest opinion that I didn't need to replace my roof. They said my husband could cheaply do the repairs himself without having to pay for their labor. I greatly appreciated the honesty, which is rare. They saved me over $7000 in needlessly replacing my roof.

It is a very beautiful roof and we are very happy with it.. Job took most of three days to accomplish. Workers cleaned up job site very well. Removed and disposed of old shingles, tar paper, flashing, drip edge, pipe boots and gutter covers and installed new. Tom Petrilli came to the house to estimate the job and give us a quote. He was very pleasant and easy to deal with. He was not high pressure. He recommended we get tree work and chimney work done before we got the new roof. We got the tree work done but not the chimney work which was a mistake. The chimney did not look bad to us with the ugly roof but with the new lovely roof it is an eyesore. I provided the new gutter covers from Home Depot and they installed them. I got three estimates from the job but two were from newspaper adds or door salesmen. I wish I would have gotten all three estimates from Angie's list contractors. I used an Angie's list coupon. There was an extra charge above the estimate to replace 32 square feet of 1/2 " CDX roof decking which was rotted and 170 feet of 1x6 roof decking which was rotted or split. The total cost of the roof replacement was $9,630.

Can't say enough great things about Lyons Contracting. Tom is awesome and I knew within minutes of meeting him that my home was in good hands. His crew was professional and my roof and new gutters look amazing. And the clean up... wow! I have dogs so it was important to me that nails, etc were cleaned up. They left my place cleaner than it was before they arrived. I highly recommend Lyon's Contracting for your roofing and gutter needs!

Tom was great to work with, from the initial estimate visit (where he pointed out that the leak I thought was from the roof was actually from the chimney; other roofers didn't notice this) to the actual roof installation. His price wasn't the lowest I got, but it was on the lower end of the range (I got four estimates) and he was by far the most thorough estimator I met with (one didn't even go on the roof!). Because of the storms in May and June, the job was delayed a few times, but Tom kept me posted throughout. The crew was polite and professional and did a great job of cleaning up the site when the job was complete.

As other reviewers have noted, Tom was very responsive following purchase of the Big Deal. He worked very closely and diligently with us to meet a tight time schedule, laying on extra workers to the crew to complete the roof in one day only one week after he visited the house to perform the estimate and provide the final contract. Our final cost was considerably over the Angie's List Big Deal--but all of the overage charges are clearly laid out in the fine print. If your roof is over 1,600 square feet (which our very small Cape Cod was), if you have anything other than a two-plane roof (straight up one side and down the other), if you need more plywood for underlayment, if your roof is steeper (such as on older homes), or if you live in an established neighborhood with trees and overhead lines where the roofing materials cannot be delivered by a crane you will pay more than the deal. Our final cost ended up $3,500 over the deal price. This was about $500 more than the lowest bid we received before spotting Lyon's deal--but $2,500 less than the highest bid we received. This is the reason we give Lyon's a B on price. I would definitely recommend use of Lyon's. Tom did a lot of work on the various valleys on our roof that had caused leakages in the past and after the big rain on Thursday, all appears to be well. We believe we received good value for the price. We found Tom and the Lyon's crew very professional and easy to work with.

Based on my very negative experience with Lyons Contracting concerning my roof repair, I cannot recommend them and will not use them in the future. During the windstorm the night of 1-2 April, an 8 foot length of metal flashing tore off the side of my 3 story townhome. Lyons Contracting promptly replied to my inquiry and I worked with them to schedule an estimate. The estimate of $743 was completed on 10 April and signed on 15 April. Their repair man Mike informed me that there were a few jobs ahead of me and that the earliest they could get to me was Tuesday 26 April. Mike never arrived on the 26th and never contacted me to explain why. Throughout the month of April, all communication with Mike was initiated by me – he was never proactive in informing me of scheduling challenges. April 26th was the last dry day until 14 May. I understand that roofers cannot work in the rain and I don’t the delay from 17 April to 14 May against Mike or Lyons. During the third week of May, the 16th, 19th and 20th were dry. Lyons Contracting never contacted us about scheduling repairs on those dry days and instead promised they would complete my repairs on Monday the 23rd. It rained on the 23rd and they rescheduled for Tuesday the 24th. They didn’t arrive on the 24th and never communicated the reason for their absence. Via text on Wednesday the 25th, Mike informed me that a different job he’d been working on the 24th required more extensive repairs then anticipated and that he would get to my house on Thursday the 26th. The afternoon of Thursday the 26th, Mike let me know that he didn’t know where their only 40’ ladder was so no repairs were possible that day. He promised that he would complete my repair job on Friday the 27th. Thursday evening, my wife and I noticed that a pair of birds had taken residence in the soffit of our roof. The birds accessed the soffit via the missing flashing and began to build a nest in a corner. That corner is over our bedroom, so we heard every movement the birds made as they constructed their nest. Via text the afternoon of Friday the 27th, Mike let me know that Lyons Contracting only 40’ ladder still hadn’t returned and that he would get to us on Tuesday the 31st. The entire weekend, we heard the birds every movement as their nest continued to grow. Fearing further damage to my roof from the birds, I informed Mike via text early the morning of the 31st that the repair had to be completed (and the birds removed) that day or we would terminate our relationship. Lyons failed to obtain another ladder so we went in a different direction. Bottom Line: My relationship with Lyons Contracting was marred by three primary customer service issues: communication, coordination, and prioritization. Communication: Mike was very difficult to connect with. Throughout the multiple delays and postponements, I almost always had to initiate contact before Mike would provide an excuse and reschedule. Coordination: Lyons Contracting only has a single 40’ ladder and has no internal processes to prioritize its use or inform staff of the ladder’s location. Most of the final week’s delays were due to Mike not knowing where the ladder was or when it was coming back. He only appeared to learn the ladder was tied up in DC (and had been all along) on Tuesday the 31st even though he’d been looking for it since the morning of Thursday the 26th. Finally, prioritization: Our job seemed to be at the bottom of their priority list. I understand that the rain had a significant impact on their ability to work and that, as they informed me in mid-April, there were other houses ahead of ours. However, by late April, they scheduled our repair and never came. In mid-May, they never came on three dry working days and never communicated with us why. In late May, after scheduling a repair, not coming and not contacting us, they prioritized a different job, one challenging enough to eat up two working days. Never once (until after they’d been fired) did Mike or Lyons Contracting let us know how backed up they were. Had they let us know they were overbooked and our job wasn’t a priority, we would have parted amicably. The flashing on the side of my roof has now been missing for two months and there are birds living in my soffit. After the 31st, Mr. Petrilli offered to complete the work at a substantial discount to mitigate our issues. By that point, we’d lost all faith in Lyons and have chosen to post this because the company we encountered is not the one described by the other reviewers.
Description of Work: Gave us an estimate for roof repair. The repair was never completed because they were never able to obtain a 40' ladder necessary to reach the affected area.

Tom responded very promptly to my initial inquiry, arrived for an inspection as scheduled, and quickly completed a thorough and easily understandable estimate for the required work, including options for shingle quality. His crew arrived after a weather-related delay (unavoidable) and completed the work in a timely and highly professional manner. Would not hesitate to use again.

I cannot say enough good about Tom Petrilli and Lyons Contracting. We've lived in our house for 2 years and we knew we had an older roof that would need replacing soon. This spring, we had an animal intrusion, and I found Tom on Angie's list, and he directed me to a trapping service and recommended a great one. We later decided that the animal intrusion and temporary roof patch we had put on were reason enough to investigate the possibility of a new roof. We had 5 companies out, and all agreed with us that we needed a new roof. Given the free advice I had gotten from Tom, we naturally included Lyons in the group of 5 bidders, and ended up selecting them. Of the 5 bidders, there were 3 that I trusted would do the job right, using the best materials and with sufficient attention to detail. Of these 3, Lyons was by far the most affordable. We were scheduled within 2 weeks, and the work was completed in a single day inside of the scheduled window (roofers are sometimes at the mercy of the weather). The work crew was polite and tidy, allowing me to pester them with questions about what they were doing and leaving not a single rogue nail anywhere on our property when they were finished. We are very happy with our decision, and would gladly hire Lyons again (but hopefully we'll never need to hire a roofer again at all)!

Great job. Very punctual, good communication throughout, very reasonable price. We lost some of the cap that runs along the side of the house under the roof, and he replaced that first on an emergency basis for a very reasonable price. I was having trouble finding a contractor that would even do that job, and the only other one I found wanted an exorbitant amount of money. A few months ago, I lost another cap (not part of the job he did), and he came out and replaced it for free. Overall, very happy with his work.

Response from Lyons Contracting Inc
It isn't often that we come upon a project that we won't work on, but sometimes there are basic violations in construction of some homes that leave me shaking my head, this was one of them. The customer obviously didn't want to hear when I declined to work on his house and I admittedly was delayed in telling him so, I certainly understand his anger and wish him the best. I offered to answer any questions he might have but I don't think I'll hear from him again. My email to him is copied below: From: Lyons Contracting Inc 3/27/2016 11:53AM Good morning Mr. M******, I have reviewed your project and at this time it's not something that we would be interested in working on. The height of the door sill in it's relation to the flat roof is inadequate, yours would be a roof I would never stop worrying about. I'm sorry to belatedly deliver this news but we have been moving offices over the past few weeks and things have been a bit chaotic. Although we will not be working on your project please feel free to get in touch if you would like impartial answers to any questions you may have. Thanks, Tom Petrilli

Excellent service. Tom evaluated, listened, discussed, and advised in professional manner. Brought samples. No pressure discussion. Foreman on site and execution team were equally professional, polite, industrious, reliable, and organized. Was advised in advance about timing, cost, and labor required. There were no surprises; job ran smoothly and on time. Boards in roof were more water damaged than originally anticipated; handled rationally and professionally. Have recommended Lyons Contracting to several people over the last few months. Am happy every time I come home and see my roof. Don't wait. Get your roofing done; you need to look no further.

Work went extremely well and exactly as described beforehand. During the process, Lyons uncovered (and photographed/documented) an unusual building flaw (an unsupported structural area) that they corrected at no additional cost and direction from me. In addition, we had pointed out to Lyons before the work started a delicate ceiling configuration in the sunroom wherein the ceiling is attached directly to the underside of the roof underlayment. Lyons took meticulous care to replace the roof and damaged section of underlayment without damaging or even disturbing the interior ceiling. As an engineer, I can appreciate how difficult this was. In addition, the work crew was very talented, experienced and worked well together. The work not only looks good, but details were expertly completed and I could not have requested a more flawless cleanup.
Description of Work: Lyons replaced our asphalt shingle roof with GAF Timberline 3D architectural shingles in its entirety. In the process, they found and photographed several weak spots and emerging holes in the plywood underlayment and replaced these areas which undoubtedly would have caused internal damage in the immediate future.

It went very well. Lyons was great to work with. We'd initially started getting estimates in June '15, but we wound up putting off a decision until December. Tom, their lead, was patient and answered all of our questions, and brought out as many samples as we could handle to make sure we were happy with our decision. He was even honest about some of the options and the potential of a "fast food franchise" appearance a couple of them could cause. The work was initially scheduled for the Thursday before Snowzilla, but ice on the roof delayed the job. They did the work as soon as the roads were cleared, and were done in a day and a half. We went with the Forest Green shingles; combined with the copper flashing, the results are incredible. They did a good job cleaning up afterward, but we still had a couple of pieces of debris in the yard which I wish they'd caught (things my dog could step on or snarf up). One very notable thing about Lyons is their straightforward, professional approach. Several of the companies we called were ones we'd spoken with at local home and trade shows. Most of them weren't interested in a "small" job such as ours (a 2BR Colonial). Others tried giving us the hard sell, wanting us to sign a contract that day. Still others gave us their estimate on the back of their business card (with no details on materials used, etc.), or simply blew us off. Overall, it was a very frustrating experience dealing with most of the other firms, and it made Tom's demeanor and approach stand out that much more. One thing I recommend for everyone shopping for a roof: RESEARCH ATTIC VENTILATION. We had an old fan that didn't work, that they removed and replaced with a gable vent running the length of the house. We don't have eaves, but there seems to be sufficient space along the sides of the attic to provide adequate ventilation. Tom did a great job going over the different techniques, as well as the basic reason to have ventilation in the first place (primarily to keep the roof healthy, not as much for temperature control of the house). But other companies we called were not as helpful; you should do your homework and find out if your system is adequate before calling for estimates.

These guys were pretty awesome. I sent a SOS email through their website after coming home to clear water damage from a roof leak on a recent rainy day. It was a Friday night and the owner, Tom, called me that night. He had suggestions for how I could stop the water damage until they were able to come out. Further Mike came out that Sunday and had a quote for me that afternoon. Mike was very thorough in explaining to me what was going on and what needed to be repaired. His quote provided to me clearly explained the work to be done. He provided pictures before and after the repair and (Bonus) thus far the repair has prevented further leaks. The only complaint I have with these guys is that originally I was told I'd have a contract to sign on Monday and the repair was to be done on Tuesday. In reality I saw a contract on Wednesday and the repair was done Thursday. This isn't a huge deal since the rain didn't come until Friday but it did cause me a few nerves. But their communication was so good in the beginning I can't complain too much. In 5 or so years when my roof requires replacement, these guys will be at the top of my list!

Tom was incredibly responsive and helpful. My ~30yro roof was leaking and he came the next morning and made a quick repair to hold us over until we could get a new roof. Even with the horrific condition of the roof we found him to be professional and sociable. We were able to schedule his team the same week which was wonderful because it allowed us to stay on track with other remodeling we had going on. The team that did the install was very friendly and did good work. The only minor issue is that some of the workers smoked and while they did contain their cigarette butts to the area near the cars they forgot to pickup them up as part of the cleanup. Because the butts were all in one area I believe this was just an oversight since the area was removed from the rest of the work space. All other areas were left clean. This was a very minor issue and one that I'm sure requires only a simple reminder to avoid in the future. I would recommend Lyons Contracting for roof work without any reservations.
