Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape

Landscaping, Lawn and Yard Work, Pavers and Hardscaping,

About us

Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape was established by Krisjan Berzins and Phil Williams in 1997. Both graduated in 1993 from Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria, Virginia, and were members of the varsity football team when they began their friendship. Phil attended Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he studied sociology. Krisjan attended Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, where he studied international business. Krisjan’s experience working in grounds maintenance at the Mount Vernon Country Club and Phil’s discipline and strong business sense formed the foundation for an ideal partnership, and the two began working together in 1997. After only 10 years in business, they had grown Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape into one of the most recognized landscape brands in Northern Virginia—with annual gross revenues of more than $5 million. In early 2008, Krisjan purchased Phil’s share of the corporation and became sole owner of Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape. While he was disappointed to see Phil go, Krisjan knew that he was ready to write the next chapter of the Kingstowne story. Today, nearly 20 successful years of business, Krisjan and his wife, Mayra, head a strong company with over 50 employees, 25 trucks, and 13 acre corporate campus, inside the beltway, in Alexandria, Virginia. Their company’s success lies in the firm belief that every customer should be treated as the “only” customer!

They charged me $75 for the consultation and a design. It was the first time they came out. There was another company that I called to get a comparison and that company provides consultation for free, but the design would have cost. Some companies do consultations for free but then they charge for the design. I know landscapers are pretty expensive and so, I wouldn’t use them for landscaping because I thought they were a little more expensive than some of the others. The lady I dealt with did a great job as far as providing information. Price wise, I don’t know if they are a little expensive, but I am sure they do good work. They were very thorough. The landscaper was creative and they had some good suggestions. I would recommend them. I have a small town house with a small backyard and it didn’t really warrant extensive work. So, I didn’t really pursue it. I am sure their quality would be good, but they never actually did the work; it was more planning. The landscape design was good. Their responsiveness was excellent. They were professional. I would probably not contact them again.

From the beginning I was impressed with Jodie and how she handled everything we asked for. I tend to require a lot of communication during projects like this and no matter day or night she answered emails, made suggestions, provided quotes, went outside of her company to find other contractors to do special work. Honestly, in the 10 years I've been doing home renovations (on 3 different houses) I've never experienced such dedication from one person at a company. She met on-site with her crew at the beginning of every large project, she listened and implemented or addressed everything I mentioned as a concern - especially the shallow TV cable line that was barely 2 inches underground - her crew went out of their way to know where it ran and how to handle it so it wouldn't be broken during the sod planting process. When I had any questions or concerns she would either stop by or know exactly what the issue was. Beyond Jodie, Kingstowne Lawn and Landscape has a great crew of folks that are professional, skilled and know how to handle anything. The results of the work exceeded my expectations, the deck crew did an amazing job - everything was done on time, on budget with no surprise costs, cleaned, swept - no nails left in the driveway, no dirt piles left around. Just an all around great job. I have read reports on here that their pricing is a bit higher than others - I definitely did not experience that. What's more impressive is they were able to fit us into their schedule to build a deck after the company we had hired to do the deck went bankrupt - we walked through scope, price, timing very quickly and the only delay was because of rain and the city permitting process. Just amazing.
Description of Work: As a result of signing up for a 'consult' through Angie's list, I met with Jodie Hinman for a design and layout. She made great recommendations and was extremely thorough in reviewing and understanding what we were looking to accomplish. As a result, we completed mulching, new sod in front and back yard, extensive tree trimming, extensive landscape in the front and back yard, a rock garden and a deck.

They were very good. They were very professional. They came out and gave an estimate. Their bid was low. They gave really good advice. They didn’t try to oversell me anything. They just gave me what I needed. It was easy to have the crew around. They were very professional. I would use them in the future.

Sat with landscape designer, Alan Macbeth, who is a good listener with a wealth of landscape and plant knowledge; he analyzed, measured, etc. and approx. a week later presented a proposal and a detailed design. We loved the design and went with the proposal. The crew arrived on schedule and did an excellent job clearing, planting and building a low stone wall. It took 2 days to complete and they cleaned-up and watered the new plants. It was a well organized crew.

Setting up the appointment was very professional, and we understood the $50 charge to dissuade the less serious. There was later appointment confusion by Kingstowne (as to day/time), and we were called to reschedule. In choosing a new date, we were told there would be a different landscape designer. ONce the meeting took place, the designer did spend about an hour with us, and left several publications.. We were cautioned against flagstone due to price, and picked pavers instead as the baseline for the estimate. Kingstowne designer in our opinion did not have the depth of experience to recommend ideas and a clear way ahead, and seemed nervous at several points in the meeting. A clear estimate - with several discussed options - arrived about a week later by email. This estimate was about 70% higher than other estimates we received (from star-rated companies on Angie's List); the one we chose even included flagstone, much less than the pavers offered by Kingstowne. This seems like a very good company, and came recommended via word-of-mouth. Our experience may have been related solely to the inexperienced sales person/designer.
Description of Work: Set up an appointment for an estimate for backyard patio hardscaping. Met with a landscape designer, who spent an hour with us on desires and intended project. Received clear estimate with several options about 1 week later. No services performed due to price.

The company stopped by the house when I was not home and left a note in the mailbox. They provided an extremely high estimate that included additional work that I had not asked for. When I contacted the company, they tried to sell me additional services. They do not work on weekends, which I thought was very unreasonable for a company of this type. In order to meet with them, I would need to take time off of work during the week.

Dear Sir, I think you may be confusing us with another company. According to our records, we received a call from you on October 9th, 2009, more than 19 months ago. During that call, you requested a quotation for Aeration & Overseeding and Fertilization of your front lawn. I see that we promptly sent an Account Manager out to your property, at no charge, and left an estimate for the services requested. This is our standard procedure. We do not require your presence during such site visits. Also, it is not uncommon for our Account Managers to survey the property and suggest other services while they are there. However, our maintenance contracts are "a-la-carte". Therefore, no one is obligated to select any service that they don't want. Our records show that we never provided you with any services. I am very sorry any confusion or misunderstanding. I do hope that you will consider our company in the future when searching for a lawn care provider.

I called the company to schedule an initial consultation with one of their landscape designers. I was told that it would cost $50 for the consultation, which could be applied towards any work I would have them do. The woman on the phone was quite lousy in setting up an appointment and was very confused what a "master plan" or "design plan" was - my first clue that something was amis. She was unable to schedule an appointment without calling the designer first. So she had to call me back. Very strange that for being a scheduler, she couldn't make an appointment. Another sign of something amis. She did call me back with an appointment and asked for my credit card info. After a few days of calling other landscape designers and having some free consultations, I realized it was not the market norm for them to charge $50 just to come to my house. Everyone else was coming without charging. When I called back to cancel appointment, which was still one week out, I thought I should tell them why I was canceling - that their consultation fee was not competitive. I was then told by Suzy (not the original woman I had spoken to) that my $50 was non-refundable. I was NEVER told this by the other woman. Suzy was very rude with me on the phone, but did agree to cancel the charge. I'll wait a day or two to see what shows up on my credit card statement. I would NOT recommend using Kingstowne - if their poor customer service and non-competitive policies are this way, I can't imagine what it would be like to work on a project with them.

I am very sorry that you feel that way. We pride ourselves on providing outstanding service. It is imperative to us that our customers are satisfied. I would like to explain the reasoning behind our $50 Landscape Consultation fee. We have 3 experienced, highly skilled, Landscape Designers on staff. In order to ensure that our clients have a guaranteed date and time for their consultation...we have found that it is best that we charge a small, $50 consultation fee. We have done this for more than 10 years and it has been a very successful policy. It has enabled us to retain some of the industry's top talent. Our small, $50 consultation fee also ensures us that our clients are committed to giving us an hour or two of time out of their busy schedules. The great thing about our consult fee is that it is credited back to you if you sign up for any project totaling $1000 or more. I have spoken with both ladies that you dealt with on the phone. The reason why we needed to call and check with the Designer prior to scheduling something with you was because your home is located outside our typical service area. I apologize for the misunderstanding. However, I want to reassure you that we were simply trying to accommodate you. Lastly, yes, our $50 consultation fee is typically non-refundable. We do this because our Designers' schedules fill up quickly. Therefore, we really try and discourage folks from scheduling something and then canceling 1 week later. That sort of thing really plays havoc on our schedules. The more consistent our schedules are...the happier our clients are. However, in your case, you called back after scheduling a consultation and, despite our policy, we agreed refund the $50. In reviewing this incident with my staff, I feel that we did everything we could have done to accommodate you. Unfortunately, things didn't work out. I wish you the best of luck in your search for a professional and reliable landscape company.

They do fantastic work on all the 3 things they do. It has always gone very well in a timely manner and on budget. They charge $10 a week for just doing the front of the townhouse. They come by during the week when I am at work. When I come home, it is perfect. There are no problems. They don?t just trim, but they also cleanup.
Description of Work: I use Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape. They worked on the front of our townhouse during their last visit. They do my weekly mowing, which they started last month. They put up our back fence for the back of our townhouse. Every fall, they do aeration and all the seeding of our lawn.

I was notified that the work on our property was scheduled for the 21st of April and would most likely take two to three days to complete. The crew arrived as scheduled and on time - working past 6:00 in the evening the first day. The following day, despite the rain, the crew worked through the day and then finished the job on Saturday morning. My husband and I were very pleased with the work completed on our property and were impressed with how meticulous the crew was with keeping the yard clean while the work was being done. The gravel under our deck looks really nice and exceeded our expectations - we thought the color of the gravel would be gray but instead it was an earth-tone; which blends in very well with the color of our deck. Our project was completed on time by a highly professional and skilled crew - excellent work! We would recommend Kingstowne Lawn & Landscaping to anyone!
Description of Work: Installed trenching/drainage system with corrugated pipe installations from all downspouts; installed EZ Flow drainage and flow well systems in our backyard; installed wash gravel to protect erosion from under our deck; raised low level area in our front yard with topsoil and installed sod to replace eroded and distroyed lawn area.

The overall result was outstanding, and the journey between the creation of the plan and this first piece of execution helps illustrate why I enjoyed working with Kingstowne. The process was not without some bumps originating from both me and the company. On Kingstowne's side, the bump was on price. Although I had given budgets for all three sections in the plan, the actual price for the portion we did first turned out to be significantly higher. Alan and Kingstowne understood my disappointment and displeasure. In the end, we each gave a little ground to reach a price in the middle. To their credit, the prices for the rest of plan are exactly as I budgeted. On my side, I was not the perfect customer! Separate work on the property forced me to delay Kingstowne's instillation, which I'm sure caused them some considerable trouble. But they didn't complain or try to force the issue. They willingly rescheduled and I think were very accommodating. The other work also created a new situation for the drainage plan--a change of plans that Alan dealt with easily and without complaint. As for the instillation itself--I can't write enough superlatives. They did the work quickly and professionally, and it looks great. The plants were all healthy and beautiful. The stones used to create a pathway were exactly what I asked for. It was all wonderful and I'm very proud of the results.
Description of Work: I worked with Alan Macbeth to first create a landscape plan for my entire property, and then on the execution of one of three sections. The first section included a stepping stone pathway and some drainage work in addition to plants. I had a great experience overall, and have decided to have Kingstowne finish the plan later this spring.

My grass isn?t in that great a shape, so they would come twice a week during the season. They are very punctual and dependable. If it rains, they will come the next day - they don?t wait two weeks. In contrast, I had used another provider who would not show up. After the work is done, they leave the place looking nice. They are a little pricey, but they are good. I get what I pay for. My yard is not big at all, and they charge $35 each time they come; I guess it costs them money to come out.

We were pleased with their work. They liked the snow and they couldn't do anything. One thing was the kid we worked with; he was wonderful and just really nice kid to work with. They just were pleasant people to work with and were too extra bit. They took out the whole row of leaves that were in front of our house and then they landscaped it. They worked with me about the plants that I wanted things and inevitable to change and crochet that were put in to. Truly that's the part of doing it and they should know. It looks nice and I think I will be happy with it if everything turns out okay. I will recommend others to go ahead and use them, truly I would. The landscape architect was nice; he came out couple of times. I wanted a plant and I didn't know the name of it and he asked me to take some pictures if I could show him which one it was. He was truly nice kid. The two guys who actually did the work were pleasant. I asked them if they take out any box if they waiting to, just put them in the lock and they did that. They didn't give me a whole lot they were looking at it fix to do that. First they did have some and one guy told no make sure you put it here too. It was nice though. I had three estimates. They were more expensive then somebody others but there were one lot more expensive and was giving lot more than any. Other person was a local guy who was actually going to do some work in our backyard because it is not much flower work than the landscaping had. His price was pretty low however he wouldn't have done it for free so that's why we went with these guys. We got call from other providers too but nothing really worked. We were really on our schedule and it had to be done. They were not expensive and it was probably not out of the box. For some people, we even have to pay them to come out but I didn't have to that. They came and did quick talk with me. We then decided that we will use them and we paid him to do a consultation. Then Angie's list had 10% discount coupon so we got $500 off. I can't talk about quality until the plants raises. I would use them again in the future.

We should have done our research regarding the landscape designer. Although she was removed from the position, we were duped into getting landscaping that was not condusive to our area. We lost many plants the following season. Buyer beware. I would have expected a redo. I am not sure if they still do landscaping. Hardscaping was outstanding and I would recommend them to anyone for that alone.

Is it possible that you are confusing us with another contractor? Our records indicate that we completed a $3238 landscape project at your home on May 2nd, 2008. Your report says that we completed a $20,000 project in July of 2007, however, both the cost and the date you reported are incorrect. I thought perhaps you were adding up the total of all work we completed at your home in 2008 and 2009, however that total is $4,109. The work that we completed was some new planting along with quite a bit of transplanting of existing plants. As you know, we offer a 1 year warranty on new, woody plants that we install, however transplanted material is not warrantied. There are many factors that cause a plant to fail, most of which are beyond our control. However, we do stand behind our work with a 1 year guarantee. Our records also show that you called our office on April 17th, 2009 stating that you were concerned about a few of the plants that we had installed. We immediately dispatched a crew on May 20th, 2009 to replace the warrantied plant material, at no cost to you. Our records also show that we dispatched a crew on June 6th, 2009 and August 19th, 2009 to address some pruning issues. Both visits were completed at no charge to you. We have no further record of communication with you after that. However, just because the warranty has expired on the new plants that we installed back in May of 2008, doesn't mean that we won't work with you. We stand behind our work and we are always willing to work with our clients. The happiness of our clients is of UTMOST importance to us. Please don't hesitate to contact us so that we can work towards an amicable resolution.

DESIGN CONSULTATION IN JANUARY (WRITING IN JANUARY): Everything went well. It has been less than 12 hours from the visit, so of course we have not yet received the formal design and estimate, but the consultation and our discussion of the draft design was very helpful, well worth the price, and--most importantly--well worth our time. The designer spent a good amount of time with us, rightly looking upon the consultation as not just a one-time service but as an opportunity to cultivate business by demonstrating his professionalism, skill, and talent. Although we are not ourselves experienced with landscaping or landscaping services, we can be demanding, and we were impressed. We particularly appreciated the designer's straightforwardness when we asked about pricing and the competition. In addition, Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape and the designer were able to accommodate a last-minute request to shift the appointment time back a few hours, which enabled both of the clients to attend the consultation. PATIO INSTALL IN LATE MARCH (WRITING IN JUNE): It has been nearly three months since the work was performed. We are pleased with our decision to get the work done and to have Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape do the work. We went with them in the end because of their professionalism, their high standards, the stability of the company, and their competitive (but not inexpensive) prices. When you spend a good amount of money to get work like this done, you want it to be done right and you want it to last. The install looks great. Looking back, some specific experiences that shaped out overall impression are: 1. Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape were patient with us while we shopped around in February and early March, while at the same time keeping us informed of possible delays as the season kicked-in while we were shopping around. 2. Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape answered our questions thoroughly and over e-mail. The latter helped out a lot, because after the consultation, we didn't have large blocks of time during the weekdays to discuss things over the phone or in person. 3. Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape worked with us when we went with someone else for the fencing job. They advised us on what arrangements for coordination would allow them to perform efficiently their much more expensive portion of the work. 4. Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape (specifically the designer we worked with in consultation back in January and throughout the install) accommodated us in a small design choice that they thought was likely unnecessary and a little bit of a hassle for the install, but we wanted anyway. It was important to us that a professional opinion was expressed and explained and that they were able to accommodate a different choice. 5. Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape went out of their way to contact us when something came up during the install. Due to no fault of their own, they were unsuccessful in contacting us, but they (the designer, the crew) wisely made the "command decision" and proceeded with the work. And it was the decision we would have made if they had been successful in contacting us. It wasn't a tough call, but it others might have seen an opportunity to delay work. 6. Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape answered questions about the install after the install. 7. The patio, seating wall, and everything else looks great (awaiting the rest of the work that we wanted to do ourselves!). 8. The only component of the experience which I was surprised about was the equipment costs for the lighting. The mark-up seemed a little high, over what on could get (same brand, same model) if you were willing to install it yourself. Every consumer should read their contract carefully when paying what was for us a good chunk of money. Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape worked with us through multiple versions of the contract without even the hint of impatience or complaint.
Description of Work: DESIGN CONSULTATION (JANUARY): A landscape designer from Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape provided us with a consultation and a draft design for landscaping, pavers, and drainage work for our backyard. The designer listened to our tentative preferences and to our still-developing ideas. He also assessed our needs by asking several important questions and by using his expert judgment, which we welcomed (since that is what we were paying for). UPDATE (MARCH): After purchasing the design provided by Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape, we competed it, with a few other companies as well as Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape. Ultimately, for reasons we explained below, we went with them for our backyard paver patio project. They worked with us as we explored and selected colors and patterns. After we confirmed the design (and the costs), and two weeks after we obtained the approval of our homeowners' association, the crew went to work. In three days, they removed existing materials, installed a new drainage system, leveled the ground and constructed the foundation, built the patio and seating wall, and installed a basic lighting system. UPDATE (JUNE): Kingstowne Lawn and Landscape checked back after the install to ensure we were satisfied.

I spent $10,000 and 1/3 of the plants died. I called them and they said that they would come out and replace the plants, but I never heard from them again. They did a really good job on the drainage issues and did deliver all of the plants that I requested. I would?t use them again in the future or recommend them to others.
Description of Work: They addressed some drainage issues and did a full landscaping job to both the front and back yard.

Dear Member, Our goal is to keep ALL of our clients happy. Although it may not always be possible, it is something that we work very hard to achieve. Based on your comments, it is clear that you are not happy. Therefore, I would like to work with you in order to resolve this issue. Our records indicate that we did 2 phases of planting at your property. The 1st phase was completed in July of 2008 and the 2nd phase was completed in September of 2008, more than 2 1/2 years ago. As you probably know, we extend a 12 month guarantee on virtually all woody plants that we install. I have reviewed your account and we have very meticulous notes of our correspondence with you. However, for some reason, your account shows no record of a call or email from you regarding the dead plants. I'm not sure why that is...but...we can still work this out. Please do not hesitate to call or email me so that we can work towards a resolution to this matter.

I sent the following email on 11/24/10 Dear Member, I am in receipt of your report on Angie’s List. This is the first I have heard of your problems with our company. We pride ourselves on providing an excellent service, however, it seems that we did not do a very good job of that with you. I am interested in hearing the details of the issues you encountered. I would very much appreciate your response. Thank you very much and I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. I sent the following email on 12/07/10 Hello Member, I just called and left a message on your cell phone. I think I may have been disconnected during the call. I wanted to speak with you about your concerns. I also wanted to explain the most recent billing statement that you received. Based on your email and our records, you canceled your mowing service on 11/13/10. However, the statement you are disputing is for 1 mowing done on 11/03/10, exactly 10 days prior to your cancellation. I have attached a copy of the statement, with my notes, for your review. I have reviewed the email history between you and your Account Manager, Mike Perez. I would still like to speak with you about your concerns and hopefully find a way to work this out and earn your business back. Please do not hesitate to call me on my direct extension at (703) 339-8706 x.9220 I look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, Krisjan Berzins President & CEO I am waiting to hear back from the Member.

Two men arrived right on time and worked non-stop for about 8 hours. Every trimming and leaf was removed and the yard looked amazing -- people walking by would stop and compliment how nice it all looked. It would have taken us several weekends to accomplish the same amount of work and I still don't think it would have looked as good. It was worth every cent to us!
Description of Work: We asked them to do what we described as "spring cleanup." This included pruning all shrubbery throughout the yard, removing remaining fall leaves, trimming and removing dead portions of all plantings, weeding, providing deep edging to border beds, and mulching. All of our landscaping was overgrown and had not had any TLC in a long time.

Kingstowne is always going to be more expensive than a low cost provider. However, they arrive when they are supposed to for estimates and to perform the work, they do exactly what they say, they use high quality trees and plants and have literally turned my lawn from ugly to very nice over a couple of years. You always speak with a professional, knowledgable person who is willing to explain anything and answer questions. I'm willing to pay extra for the great service and customer care.
Description of Work: Remove small tree, remove stump, re-seed area. Replace a number of damaged/dead shrubs and plants. Have used for lawn fertilization/weed control/aeration overseeding for years.

The representatives were all very professional, courteous and punctual. However, the treatments did not manage to significantly decrease the weed and crabgrass condition of the lawn, so it was only marginally effective.

We met with Josh Brewer to discuss the possible work to be done. He provided estimates for the work that was done as well as for lawn work that we chose not to do. The work was done on schedule. The quality of the stone work was wonderful. The only shortcomings were that the final front porch was not exactly as had been described and the workers left a lot of mortar on the lawn. They also filled around the new walkways with dirt. It looked nice until there was a bumper crop of crab grass. Over all, we are pleased with the walkways and stoops.
Description of Work: The tore out and replaced the front flagstone walkway and porch. They also replaced the back stoop and concrete walkway.

Their work was good, but I thought they were over priced. They gave us good advice on the plants and everything looked very nice in the end.
Description of Work: They basically removed some plants and reinstalled new ones in our front yard.
