This company goes my many variations on this name, even on their own stationery. It is variously known as John C. Flood Inc, John C. Flood of Va., Inc (when they sign something, although they have a Brentwood MD office, too) and the address varies from 6430 General Green Way to 6430 General Way, both on their own stationery. There is another company called John C Flood in Maryland, which gets very irritated if you confuse the two. We hired them for both plumbing and electrical work in Bethesda MD. This report is just about the plumbing, but the electrical was a big problem, too. They were refurbishing several bathrooms, showers, sinks, and some other items in a '60s era house. Most of the work they actually did was weeks late, which they blamed on their mistakes in trying to install the wrong parts, then having to redo all of them. They were also supposed to fix a leak coming from a bathroom, which they said was fixed -- fortunately we spotted a continuing leak before the carpenter closed in the ceiling below. Second time around they appear to have gotten the leak, which was in the toilet, not where they thought it was. They also insisted that we needed to put shutoff valves in each of the lines to each shower or bath, which resulting in having to cut large holes in several bedroom walls to gain access, causing our painting bills to go up, too. This appears to have been unnecessary. I had to keep reminding them about items that still needed to be done. Once they finish trying to sell you stuff, they don't respond to calls unless you start talking about delaying payment.
Description of Work: We had them do plumbing and electrical work to rehab a '60s era home, including lots of repaired or replaced faucets, drains, a toilet, two sinks, and outside hose bibs. The total job was around $20,000 including electrical and plumbing, which was several thousand over original estimates because there was always one more thing they wanted us to do before inspection.

Response from John C. Flood - Virginia
Good afternoon, I am the new marketing manager for John C. Flood and I came across your review here on Angies List and I wanted to reach out to you. I know it's been a few years, but I just wanted to confirm a couple things. As you noted there are two John C. Floods (they used to be the same but broke apart about 10 years ago) legal battle still going on for final use of the trademarked name. The reason for the break is the partner from the other John C Flood which operates out of Washington DC only at 711 Kennedy St only performed horrible work and customer service. Our Offices as you noted are at 6430 General Green Way Alexandria, VA and 4419 41st Brentwood, MD. It's confusing to say the least. I had a rep here look for your record and it appears we came out for an estimate but we never actually performed the work, so it is our believe this review may be directed to John C. Flood of DC. If it is determined that it was indeed the other John C Flood that provided this very bad experience we were hoping you could amend this review, or remove entirely. It was a bad experience and unfortunately we have the same name, always a bad start. Feel free to contact me if you wish by email at chris@johncflood.com. Regards, Chris Thompson

Thursday evening the AC stopped working. I had an existing maintenance agreement with John C. Flood, VA, 703 914-1800 so I called on Friday morning. A technician arrived by noon and diagnosed the problem as a burnt out furnace blower motor. He explained and demonstrated his diagnosis to ensure I understood exactly what the problem was. He then explained that he could replace the blower motor and the cost of that option. He then pointed out the overall condition of the 20 year old furnace and recommended replacement. He also reviewed with me the selection of replacement furnaces and their features. He then ordered the furnace I indicated and arranged for installation the following Monday morning. The installation team arrived at 8:30 on Monday morning, removed the original furnace, measured for the adapter ducting required for the new furnace and put the order in to their sheet metal shop. While waiting for the adapter ducting I asked about a replacement water heater since it was as old as the furnace (20 years). The installer reviewed the options of a conventional vs. tankless water heater. I asked if he could replace the 50 gallon gas water heater along with the furnace. He arranged for a new water heater to be delivered and a plumber to install it. All work was completed by 1:30. The team thoroughly cleaned up, ensured everything worked properly, and reviewed the operation of both systems with me. Furnance: $3811 installed Water Heater: $1181 installed I had an existing maintenance agreement with John Flood before I subscribed to Angie's List. However, based on this recent work I would definitely recommend this service company to anyone!

The receptionist at the company claimed the company performs services by the job, but you have to pay an initial service charge to get the plumber to come to your house. We had some construction, so there was drywall dust. The first plumber said the dust was clogging a filter at the bottom of the water heater. He brushed the filter, and was able to light the pilot. It stayed lit for less than two weeks, and then went out again. (the charge was $96). The company sent another plumber who spent ten minutes looking for tools in his truck, another ten minutes on the floor brushing the filter on the bottom of the water heater, another ten minutes writing up a ticket. He did not fix the water heater and tried to tell us that we needed a new one (the water heater is only four years old). This plumber charged us an hourly rate, despite the receptionist claiming that the plumbers did the work by the job. (charge was $128). My husband was able to fix the damaged pilot light assembly (not the fitler as two John C Flood plumbers had claimed). They charge you for not fixing anything. We tried to resolve the issue with several phone calls to the company, and never received a response from them. The company overcharged us to misdiagnose the problem. They misrepresented themselves by charging by the hour, rather than by the job, as claimed over the phone.

The problem was that the chimney liner has had some disintegrated and sediment had blocked the pipe to the boiler. There wasn't enough draft to start it. He was great! He came out on very short notice, probably within 3 hours and had the job completed right away. I couldn't believe how inexpensive it was. Give this guy a call.

They said they would fix the pipe for free but they would have to tear out the ceiling to get to it because it is an older house and wouldn't pay to repair the ceiling. They came back out and quoted $500 to do the job and left without fixing it. I called and told them that they said they would do the work for free because their serviceman caused the problem in the first place. They said there was a miscommunication and they would fix it. They finally came back to do the work for free and were very professional. They gave me a window of time when they would arrive and came within that time. They made it right in the end but it was a pain. I had to take another day off work, find someone to repair my ceiling that now has a big hole in it, and now we are going to have to redo the bathroom because of all of the water that was absorbed by my plaster.
Description of Work: I called originally for a hair clog in upstairs tub. A man came out and snaked it and said it was fixed. After two days of showering, I heard water running. I thought the kids left the water on in the downstairs bathroom but they hadn't. I called John C Flood again and they came back out. The serviceman poked a hole in my plumbing when he snaked for the hair clog. He didn't check from the access panel to make sure that he hadn't damaged anything.

The plumber showed up on time. The work was done except his masonry drill bit broke and he could not attach faucets to the concrete basement wall. He made no effort to rectify this. I was waiting for their electrician to do the electrical work, and he told me to ask them to attach the faucets. However, the electricians never came on two occasions when they were scheduled, so the faucets still are not attached to the wall.

Repair was needed to replace broken bleeders, replace drain trap in kitchen and replace flue. Needed flue replaced due to hole. Hole was overlooked by plumber from same company who came to house a week ago to correct leaking part in furnace. Company did not send plumber who had been in house a week ago and the plumber provided today did not bring the correct size part. Did not come prepared to drain system as requested when repair request was made. Complained about the time needed for this process. Company did not call in advance to notify me when to expect the plumber. Drain trap could not be replaced due to incompatibility with other parts in system.
