Unfortunately, we experienced incredibly poor communication on this company's part. After initially calling their telephone number and speaking with Mary Flaherty, she requested I send a follow-up email detailing the project in which I was interested. I did so the same day (Friday) and received a follow-up email from her on Monday asking for my phone number and advising the Francis Flaherty would contact me soon. After this, all communication ceased. I followed-up with both emails and additional calls that were not returned. While I would completely respect Flaherty Iron Works' choice not to take on my project, ignoring my repeated requests for communication is the mark of a poor company.

They were excellent. The owner came by on a Sunday with his wife, and remeasured, and the workers were very competent, and cleaned up after themselves. They were very good, and did a really good job. They finished 2 weeks ago. Every piece had to be ordered according to length, height, and everything.
Description of Work: They built a railing for my wife. My wife has difficulty getting up into the house so they put up made to order railings, and put them where she wanted them and how she wanted them.

I worked at an historic home (ca. 1825), and we engaged Mr. Flaherty for several projects. After a break-in, Mr. Flaherty designed, manufactured, and installed iron window grills for the attached carriage house. The grills had to meet the approval of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and Mr. Flaherty understood that from the start. He also designed a replacement gate for our driveway which met the historic standards and provided the needed security. We turned to Mr. Flaherty after the great snow storms of 2009 and 2010. A large tree limb fell and damaged an antique (ca. 1900) outdoor iron table. The branch put a sizable hold in the middle of the table. He came and picked up the piece and returned it a few weeks later. No one could tell where the hole was - it was truly impressive. I highly recommend Mr. Flaherty for jobs large and small.

Cost was about $100 higher than other companies that gave estimates, but all the other companies said their product would rust over time. Flaherty's uses the same carbon steele that will eventually rust(only wrought iron doesn't rust and, according to Mr. Flaherty, no one makes wrought iron any more). However, Flaherty's treats the iron with this special product that's supposed to prevent and protect the iron from rusting. We felt that the special product would be worth the additional cost. I typically had to leave messages on the voice mail and Mr. Flaherty would return the call in the evenings after 7 PM. He always called back. Eventually he gave me his cell number and I was able to reach him right away. They were able to give me a finished product in one week. The end product in terms of size, shape, etc. is exactly like the original. However, the protective coating is disappointing. The coating is black but dries with a dull mottled finish. There were chips in the protective coating when I picked it up, but they gave me some of the coating to patch the chips. It took several coatings to fill the chips and in the course of a week as I alternately spot painted and let it dry I noticed other rust scratches showing through-this occurred before I even started using the grate. I contacted Mr. Flaherty about the rusting grate, and he retreated it but used a primer this time. So far, after a few months, it still looks good.
Description of Work: Fabricated a metal grate to duplicate an existing grate that had deteriorated with rust. Applied a special coating to protect and prevent from rusting. The coating is supposedly used by the US Army and is supposed to last indefinitely.
