These guys are really good. George tried everything to get my 17-yr old heat pump operating so I could have temporary cooling, but eventually we agreed I'd need a new one. The team worked hard for several hours and had solid answers to all my questions. George even showed me how to double the warranty on the unit with the manufacturer by submitting info to their website. The unit has been working and cooling perfectly.

Cosmos Heating & Cooling were very professional and punctual. My furnace is over 20 years old and I have had it serviced by several companies over the years. The Cosmos technician was very knowledgeable and answered all my questions, including some things not related to the furnace itself. And he also did not try to sell me any other services, or a new furnace! Cosmos seems to be a very honest company, I would hire them again without hesitation.

Cosmo was the only service who made themselves available on the first hot day of the year, when lots of calls were coming in. Everyone said one to three days later. Gus tried to fit me in at multiple times that came open but kept his word on a later time agreed to previously so I wouldn't have to cancel a meeting. They were exactly on time to the minute (!). Gus showed me the blown part and discussed the reason for adding a booster (old compressor that probably fried the previous one, so this could make it last longer.) He said he used Carrier parts for a Trane to reduce the cost. Their price for performing the diagnostic was average, as was, I believe, the rate for fixing. The fixed labor costs for everyone seems above what it seems like it "should" cost, as does Cosmo's, but it did seem comparable to those for other non-A/C services, and, like most others, they give a flat rate that depends on the service, which prevents easy comparisons. The overall cost, including for parts plus the additional booster only came out a little above the range estimated to me by another service (the seemingly least expensive) without the booster, so very likely lower than average all told (and all tolled). I am very satisfied with their service.

I have a service contract for my a/c & heat unit through Cropp Metcalfe. At their last visit, they strongly recommended that I replace my blower motor. The reason given was that it was leaking a lot of oil and that the failure was imminent. Typically my process when working with service contracts is that I use a different company to perform any repairs than the company responsible for the inspection (inspection is part of service contract, repair is usually extra). This prevents any conflict of interest and ensures that any service or repairs done are legitimate. I was concerned with Cropp Metcalfe's recommendation that I replace the blower motor and called Cosmos Heating and Cooling to do another check and replace the motor if legitimate. Scheduling them to come out was very easy, they were able to work with my schedule. A gentleman named George came to do the checkup and informed me that the blower motor still had life left in it. He mentioned that blower motors typically give some sort of audible warning (by means of squeaks and other noise) before failure and if he were in my shoes, he would wait till we saw some of those signs, before making the decision to replace. Cosmos could have just followed Cropp Metcalfe's recommendation, done the repair and charged me a boat load of money, but instead they were honest and looked after my best interests. All in all, I could not be happier with the experience and I wholeheartedly recommend Cosmos Heating & Cooling.

I recently moved into a home that had been renovated by a building company, only to find a few days later that the heating in the house was very irregular (during cold winter days, our 1st floor was 60 degrees, our second floor was in the 70s, and our basement was in the 50s). I knew that it was normal to have a couple of degrees difference from floor to floor, but these were differences of 10 degrees and the thermostat was set to 72 with the reading on the 1st floor. Additionally many of the vents were having very little to no airflow. I had been trying to troubleshoot the problem by closing off vents and direct all the air to the 1st floor, but without success. After trying all of the ideas that were provided by friends and family, I decided that it was time to seek professional assistance. After researching a couple of different top-rated companies on Angie's list, I decided to give Cosmos a call. I was glad to not only be able to reach somebody on a Saturday, but also that I was able to reach Gus (the owner) directly. After explaining our issue to him and getting a quote for having him come out to check out our house and do an assessment/evaluation of the issue, he was able to come out first thing that Monday morning. He was on time, courteous, and respectful of our property (he brought shoe sleeves for both himself and his assistant so that they wouldn't track dirt from the outside). I normally wouldn't have given that much thought, but we also happened to be in the process of doing a major clean-up of our house to remove drywall dust, dirt, etc. that had given my pregnant wife a persistent cough, so I appreciated that small detail. I found Gus to be very professional and knowledgeable. He took his time to look at the furnace, check the airflow of every single air vent in the our property, and talk through with us what our experience had been. Our concern was that one of the ducts had been blocked (we found debris in one of our floor vents that the builders had kicked in there) and that we would have to tear open walls. However, Gus's methodical approach led us to determine that the furnace had not been properly set for use with our house and that the circuit board had an issue. He then took the time to call the furnace manufacturer and worked with them to fix the circuit board and adjust the power of the furnace's air blower (to pump more air into the house). Once he was done, he took some more time to answer some questions we had about add-ons we may want to make to the furnace to make our home healthier and more comfortable (humidifier, UV light, etc.), and also provided us with an estimate for each. When all was said and done, Gus patiently spent over two hours with us. We were only expecting to have an assessment/evaluation/diagnosis of the problem, but ended up with a fixed furnace, properly heated house, and a good idea of what improvements we might want to do in the future. He did not try to upsell us on anything, and we felt like he was honest and transparent in all of his work. I cannot recommend Gus highly enough and will definitely be calling him again in the future.

The service was goo. They did not try to raise the charge. They were responsive for the service. One of the services went very well and the other was just average.
Description of Work: This was a Big Deal for $69.95 for a 22-point furnace inspection and cleaning. This was for two separate units and I purchased two coupons. I had them come out mainly to find out about the air conditioning/furnace filters.

Cold weekend and gas jets would not light in furnace. We called Cosmos and got Gus Christofi on the phone. He was onsite within about an hour, diagnosed and repaired the problem.

Great - was snowing and was out within an hour of the call and should genuine concern for my parent's not having heat. Others wanted to charge twice the amount and some wouldn't come out in the weather at all. Very efficient and solved problem quickly and VERY HONEST!

Cosmo's are great. Our furnace broke on what was then the coldest night of the year. I managed to get it running enough to get us through the night and had someone else come in for an emergency call that went well and got it running enough to buy us some time. The system was 15-16yrs old and was contractor grade to begin with so we knew we needed to replace it. Based on other reviews I contacted Cosmos to get an estimate and was happy with their response through the entire process. It being the beginning of a major cold spell (the first Artic Vortex to hit the mid-east) every heat/AC company I called was busy. Cosmos was able to come by that evening after they completed a job. Gus called me to verify when he would be there and took a look at our system. He talked with me about our options and actually suggested I didn't need the top of the line Carrier system and recommended the mid-level system. I already had a quote from someone else so Gus looked at what system they suggested, agreed that it was appropriate, and then gave me a quote for the same system. His quote came in $1500 less than the competitor without any sales pressure at all. He also offered to install just a furnace using our existing coil and a/c unit, where two other companies said that wasn't possible. We elected to replace the entire system though so it was all installed by the same company and covered under the same warranty. We got two more quotes and Cosmos wasn't the cheapest, but he wasn't the most expensive either. After a lot of research online as well I decided that Cosmos offered the best price. I liked that it was a family business and that they've been doing this for 20+years as well. We agreed to have the work done on Thursday and they agreed to squeeze us in the following Tuesday. The temps were in the 50's over the weekend so we were able to deal with the wait. (Cosmo's doesn't work on weekends). Monday afternoon I received a call from them to confirm Tuesday morning for installation, and that morning they called to give me a heads up of when they would be at the house. They showed up exactly when they said they would, set up right away and began work. Overall the installation took about 4hrs. They were quiet, clean and professional and did a great install. The system works incredibly well and we're very happy with work they did. We'll use Cosmo's to service our system when necessary and will recommend them to anyone we know.

We felt like Cosmos was totally ripping us off- over $300 for less than half an hour of work to replace 2 blown fuses on our hvac system. First, the guy was very reluctant to show us where the fuses were (never mind how to replace them) so we might be able to do it ourselves in the future. Next, he insisted that the fuses were "very rare" and that we wouldn't be able to get them ourselves if we wanted to, even though he just so happened to have them on him. Finally, when he handed us the bill, he said "your landlord is paying for this, right?" That was both 1) insulting (apparently he didn't think a young couple could possible own our house... which we do) and 2) told us he was overcharging us with the expectation that we would be reimbursed by a non present party. While Cosmos was very adept at changing our fuses, I would not call them again, and would not recommend them to others.

I have dogs myself and when i know that someone is coming to my house i contain my dogs to another room to keep them calm and quiet. 2) Not a Minute later you started complaining and arguing with your husband that it was his fault that he broke your machine that if he had not checked thermostat nothing would have happened to your unit and the argument kept going on and on and on and on. 3) I tried to calm you down by telling you that i will check the system and will tell you the truth (I felt I was There to Coach and not to repair.) 4) i went up in the attic and had to take my time to clean around your unit to make a path for easy access to start my job. After I checked your system I found that your fuses were burnt. 5) I came downstairs, i told you what I found, and i make sure to help you understand it was NOT YOUR HUSBANDS FAULT 6) I had to walk 2 1/2 blocks to go to my van (it is not easy to park in downtown alexandria) found the new fuses, walked back to install it in your system and now it started to run fine. AS I WAS UP IN THE ATTIC TRYING TO FINISH MY JOB, I COULD HEAR YOU IN THE KITCHEN ARGUING WITH SOMEONE ON THE PHONE THAT YOU WILL ASK FOR AN INVOICE AND ASK FOR AN ANGIES LIST DISCOUNT AND YOU KEPT REPEATING LOUDLY OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Finished my job, left the fuses upstairs in the attic, took my tools. 7) your husband closed the access door to the attic. As i was walking halfway down the stairs with my tools you ordered your husband and I to go back in the attic to teach your husband where the fuses are and how to replace the fuses again next time it happens 8) Your husband shook his head and said something in a low voice and at that time i stepped in and said not to worry because the fuses are still upstairs in the attic so he can go later and see it.I ALWAYS TRY TO HELP MY CUSTOMERS OVER THE PHONE HOW TO FIX A FEW THINGS A HOMEOWNER CAN HANDLE SO THEY CAN SAVE THE DIAGNOSTICS CHARGE, BUT I WILL NEVER.....NEVER....EVER PUT MY CUSTOEMRS IN HARMS WAY TO REPAIR THE SYSTEM THEMSELVES AND ESPECIALLY PUT YOUR HUSBAND IN HARMS WAY AND ELECTROCUTE HIMSELF, NOT ONLY FOR HIS SAFETY , but FOR THE LIABILITY STANDPOINT. 10) As i handed the bill to you, I asked you if you have a landlord because i heard you eairlier arguing with someone about the bill and if you had a landlord I would have given you the original copy of the invoice to have a clearer copy to scan or fax over to your landlord. Helpful and very professional. Gus heard noise in the water pipes and we checked those and he noted my regulator for water pressure was old and needed replaced, recommended a plumber, and that the noise I hear all the time with water on is not good, should not hear it. They also tightened water pipes as they may be the cause of the loud noise?.they really worked hard to try and find the issue for me while replacing the furnace fan.
Description of Work: I have a maintenance contract with them and they came out when I heard a loud noise coming from the furnace. It took a while - a few weeks- but we found that the fan needed to be replaced due to a noise Gus heard but that the louder noise may be something entirely outside the furnace. Both George and Gus are very helpful and know their business.

The owner arrived with an assistant and determined that the furnace and air conditioner needed to be replaced and it had to be fast because of the very cold temperatures outside. They gave us an estimate, we agreed to it and they left. They came back within a few hours and began the work of removing the old furnace and AC and replaced them that day with the new units. The Cosmos staff were efficient, fast, courteous and the furnace works perfectly. We are very pleased with the work that was performed and recommend them highly.
Description of Work: Our old furnace/air conditioner was approximately 20 years old and was emitting an odor that we determined to be carbon monoxide, so not only was the heating unit not working (temp in the house was 61 degrees the day we called Cosmos), but it was dangerous with the gas emissions. We called Cosmos and they responded within the hour to our house.

The fella who answered the phone was the fella who showed up here in DC. He quoted me the price in advance, told me it was time and a half on a Saturday and made sure I was OK with that, and then was here inside of an hour. The problem turned out to be a clogged tube. It didn't require a ton to fix (a pin), but figuring out the what the problem was, finding which one it was and unclogging it all were well beyond my expertise. He was quick, quiet, efficient, and good at his work. He'd fixed the problem within an hour. His price, of $310, was $150 to show up and then $150/hour after that. The two other folks I spoke with, one was $300 just to show up, the other's hourly price "varied according to the problem" after that. While I wasn't eager to spend the money, he was very upfront and did the job really well.
Description of Work: Cosmos came out within an hour of me calling at 5pm on a Saturday to fix our heat, which had turned off completely.

I called them at 10AM with a heat pump that was not working. They arrived at 11:30, diagnosed the problem very quickly, went out to find the part and came back and replaced it by 2PM. They were prompt, professional, reasonably priced, and courteous. They took care of the part under warranty. I would definitely use them again.

I called on a Sunday when our furnace broke down. They called back promptly and asked a lot of thoughtful questions over the phone. After they gathered enough information to determine that they wouldn't be able to resolve the problem on the first visit they said that there was no point in my paying the emergency premium rate for coming out on a Sunday and we scheduled an appointment for the following morning. They called the next morning ahead of time, arrived promptly, were courteous and efficient. I would definitely call them again in the future.

I called Cosmos late in the day on Nov 27, day before Thanksgiving when I noticed the flu pipe cover on the roof had fallen off, most likely due to old age and brisk winds. After assuring us that it was not an emergency situation, they came out early the Friday after Thanksgiving and were the only company that would come out before the following Monday. While it was not an emergency its never a good idea to have the potential of water collecting in the bottom of the flu pipe so we were pleased to get prompt service for this repair. The installation was quick, their work is clean and solid. Great job by Cosmos heating - many thanks.
Description of Work: Replaced flu pipe cover on roof, and part and T- connection leading to furnace from flu pipe.

So, sit back and enjoy my story~ I called Cosmos because McCarthy was not able to come to my house as this was the beginning of the winter season. Cosmos was able to come to my house the same day I called to make an appointment. They were courteous and prompt. They came in to take a look at my furnance because my furnance was not switching on. The diagnosis was that my switch (sorry the tecnical term escapes me at the moment) was sticking and that I'll just need to let it run for a little bit to "oil" it up since I just truend on the furnance and it hasn't run for awhile. They could have told me I needed a new switch and I wouldn't have known any different, but they were honest with me and didn't take advantage of selling me a new part. The cost of the service call was $95. I let my furnance run for awhile, but the switch kept sticking. I wanted to make sure that I gave it ample time to run as it was supposed to, so for the next two weeks I would turn off the furnance and turn on the furnance in order for the switch to flip over and start the furnance. After two weeks of this, it was safe to say that the switch was not the problem. So, I called Cosmos again and they came a few hours later. Again, on the same day as my call. I have to say, I really like the fact that they can make same day appointments when it was impossible with McCarthy. They checked the system again, and this time, they checked the connection from the motherboard to the switch since the switch is fine and the air flow was good. Turns out, it was the motherboard that was the problem even though the 3 red signals says it was a problem with the switch. A new motherboard was needed, but they needed to make another call, so Cosmos made the other appointment (we had no problems with that. That's why they can make same day appointments right?) and then came back to my house with a new motherboard. Cosmos changed the motherboard out with a new one, which set me back about $440 (labor and part, including a military discount). Problem solved! They were courteous the entire time and they were honest and the prices were reasonable. They even gave me the option to buy the parts they identified online and they would just charge me labor to install the part. How cool is that?! I would definitely use them again and have recommended them to my neighborhood email list.

Overall Cosmos did an excellent job replacing my furnace venting pipes to the main flue line of the home. They also did a good job with the winter maintenance on my furnace. The service was more was costly than I anticipated but unfortunately my prior venting pipe had rusted out and my family needed heat that weekend and I was going out of town. Cosmos was the only company that could fit us in their schedule within a day, all the other 'A' rated companies on Angie's list told us it would be the next week (4 to 5 days) before they could come out to inspect and repair. I would highly recommend Cosmos for the quality of work!

Cosmo Heating and Cooling is simply the best HVAC company that I have used in 30+ years that includes several rental properties. They are a family owned and operated small business that excels in customer service. Very knowledgeable, honest and professional. I've used them many times in the past and always recommend them to friends. This service call was for our residence to fix our furnace that had stopped working overnight. I left voice mail on their line at around 6:30am and got a call from George at 7:15am. They were here by 11am to start work. They quickly fixed the problem and I asked them while they were already here to install a new Ecobee wifi thermostat that I had purchased. No problem, done. They also serviced the HVAC while on the service call and saved me multiply visits. Other companies would be running out the door telling me to call and set up another call, but these guys know how to focus on the customer. No hassles, just great same day service at a very fair price. No makeups for same day emergency service. I had been meaning to setup their annual service contract that covers Spring and Fall and while it was on my mind did so today. There is only one HVAC company we will use in the future and it's George and his Dad with Cosmo.
