Description of Work: We had a complete basement remodel. Existing paneling was demo'ed, new framing was installed, drywall hung, home theater wired, and carpet installed. Entire crew was good, but Thomas Arndt was the pro who kept everything going. If he is your foreman, your job will be done right. I plan to have a bathroom installed and Basement Detective will be at the top of my list--especially if Thomas oversees the job. Highly recommended.

Response from Basement Detective
There was obviously some miscommunication about the customer's particular situation or the extent of our services. We are normally the better priced option. Our reviews have reflected that. Also, we offer an apples to apples price guarantee for the same work if offered by a competing licensed and insured company.

Description of Work: I met Roland Hook, Senior Inspector, for Basement Detective at the appointed time on January 20, 2015. We discussed a water leak in one corner my basement whenever it rains. He was professional and answered my questions as he looked in my basement and the outside wall of my home. He suggested hand digging along 25 feet of the house 3 feet deep and waterproofing the wall, collect the rainwater from a downspout, and transport it 45 feet in a buried pipe to an area in the yard. The quote from Mr. Hook for this work was close to $10,000 with NO GARANTEE!!!

Description of Work: The severe rain storms of late have led to severe puddling near the foundation and some water seepage into my laundry room. The very professional technician from Basement Detective promptly arrived at my house, examined both the exterior and interior areas of my home impacted by the heavy rains, asked lots of pertinent questions and suggested a minor adjustment to the drainage system on the exterior that might prevent the build up of water that is seeping into the laundry room. If that doesn't work, he provided an explanation and estimate for a sump pump system in my laundry room. The location of the room does not allow for sealing the foundation from the outside. There have been two down pours since his visit and I have had no water build up so far. I was very impressed by the technician.

I am very pleased with the work. I have had several contractors out to assess the situation and make recommendations and proposals. Theirs was the most thoughtful, comprehensive, and cost effective. Both the project manager and the owner visited several times to oversee and assess the work. They took on the whole project (one contractor wanted me to contract part of it out myself) and took problems and unforeseen circumstances in stride. I was struck by the owner's commitment to do a first class job and leave a happy customer, which he did. If I found something I thought needed more attention or a better solution, he brought the workers back to do it. As with any project, whatever the quality of the contractor, I recommend you stay engaged in the project as it proceeds. We had one major unexpected hitch that added significantly to the cost of our project. The contractor uncovered a leak in the ceiling under one of our upstairs bathrooms. The leak had been there for some time, but I attributed the occasional water in the bedroom to outside water infiltrating. Repairing the leak required our plumber to tear out a section of the ceiling, which had an unmatchable patterned plaster finish that required new drywall over the whole room. While this added to the cost and duration of the project, it would have been much more costly if the room had been finished and the leak continued with accumulated damage. The owner, project manager, and workers were, in my experience, unusually committed to doing a first rate job, taking problems in stride and working to overcome them. The owner wanted a happy customer at the end of the project and worked hard to ensure that. The workers were highly skilled. The project had more than its fair share of problems and surprises, but they creatively plugged their way through them.
Description of Work: Basement Detectives performed work in and around a downstairs bedroom that was underground on the two exterior walls. They effectively stopped constant high humidity in the room and water leakage at one corner following any major rain. The used a combination of interior capture of water (jackhammering the foundation around the interior of the two walls to add piping, a dry well, and a pump, and removing the interior wall to add a non-permeable barrier to capture water) and exterior trenching and piping to prevent water from reaching the house.

These guys are great, just like the other reviews on here. I got a straight answer, not a bunch of crap about what they could sell me like some other company I called. I will use them in the future to waterproof and finish the basement. Very good people very good company. I had Roland come out, the guys a pro, no doubt.

I contacted Basement Detective thru Angie's List and, within a week, received a written inspection report from Mr. Hook confirming that my basement had never had water issues in the past. Three weeks later, after heavy rains, I asked that he return and measure for dampness. Because he was in the neighborhood he was able to visit and determine that no water had entered my basement. Because no corrective action was needed, I was not billed for either inspections. Basement Detective, and specifically their inspector, Roland Hook, was efficient and professional.
Description of Work: My home is a part of a small town - house community. Recently the neighbors who share my west wall decided to destroy a grade in their back yeard with concrete and pavers providing a higher surface level than mine. I was concerned that this action would obstruct the normal rainwater drain flow in my back yards with the possibility of water intrusion in my basement for the first time in 27 years. With that concern in mind I asked Basement Detective's to visit my basement and establish fact that it has never been flooded in the past.. Their inspector, Roland Hook, visited my basement, inspected my potentially affected wall and adjacent floor as well as viewing the neighbors new paving. He confirmed that there was no evidence of any water intrusion for the 27 year life of my home.

They did a wonderful job. They were knowledgeable on the french drain and sump pump system. They had done a lot of research and they knew what we needed to do. Our problem was somebody jackhammering around the perimeter of the basement, inside, was a big deal for us. I couldn't even imagine that happening. Because of the research that they had done and provided to us, we knew that it was the right decision to get the water out of our basement. They did a good job on the french drain and sump pump. They were prompt. They got it done in a small amount of time, like 2 days, and it is working. We have a dry basement. They were very good about educating us about that system. We then wanted the basement framed and insulated. I wanted to go into the winter with a warm dry basement. It was a finished basement that then because of the earthquake water entered and we had to pull everything out. They had a separate division of Basement Detectives that did the remodeling part of it. That crew I would not recommend. They framed it really well, but they put in the wrong insulation we specifically asked for. Again, we had talked to the owner and we said specifically what we wanted done and then the crew comes and had none of that information and they do what they want to do down there. The main guy isn't there that we had spoken to so I am trying to speak Spanish to these guys and they are just working away. In the end we had electrical outlets that were put in upside down, exposed wires. They just didn't know what they were doing. The crew couldn't possibly be certified to do this. We ended up having another electrician come in to fix it.

I found this provider on Angie's list and after reading the great reviews decided to give them a call to get an estimate for clean-up after flooding in our basement from the recent rainfall. I called them and asked when I could get someone out. They asked for my husband's name, to which I replied "his name is irrelevant. I am calling schedule someone to provide an estimate." They then asked me if I am married or single and told me that I could not schedule the appointment alone... my husband would need to be there. Why? Because they plan to "give [me] a lot of information." I have never been so offended in a 5 minute call with a service provider in all my life. I will never use this company. I can't believe they do business in Northern Virginia and treat women like it's the 1940's.

It went great even though i did not get any service done.
Description of Work: I had water in my basement and could not figure out where it was coming from. I had a brand new water heater and multiple service calls thinking that the water heater was leaking some how. Basement Detective's Roland showed up at my house right on time and at an odd hour for my convenience. He was very professional. Roland thoroughly inspected my house and located a possible cause of the water. The leak was coming from a bad wax ring on a toilet in an adjoining bathroom. Roland walked me through all the steps he took to come to his conclusion. and explained in detail what the problem was. Even though I did not have to pay for the evaluation i was treated as if i spent thousands. Basement Detectives is a great company and I wouldn't hesitate recommending them to someone who would like an honest evaluation.

Basement Detective was extremely flexible during the estimation and repair process. The property where the work was performed is currently a rental property, but I do intend on moving back into the home. A poor initial design on the basement walkout drainage system meant every hard rain there was a significant risk of flooding the basement. Basement Detective provided an effective solution to the problem and there have been several hard rain events, including Hurricane Sandy, to know that the solution works. Nobody ever wants to spend money on basement waterproofing, but this fix was well worth the money. I would definitely use them again for any drainage challenges in or around a home.

overall it was the best experience i have ever had with a comp any!
Description of Work: Our basement had been seeping water so we decided to use this company according to the high ratings on Angie's list. They came out the same evening I called and I thought it was very professional that they wanted both spouses there for the free estimate. Roland came out and was very meticulous in his inspection. Roland also explained the whole procedure as he was doing it and why. He then show us on paper what was wrong and what we needed to do to fix it. we had a french drain dug into our basement and a sump pump put in. They took our basement walls down to the concrete and assured us it would be put back to it's natural state. They were try to there word. Our basement was jack hammered up from 2 walls in the basement all the way to the bathroom(finished basement) they they had people come in and lay the french drain (THERE WAS SO MUCH UNSEEN WATER WE COULDN'T BELIEVE IT!) and put in the sump pump, laid down white stone to cover drain and let water drain overnite. then they came the next day and laid the concrete and we had to let that dry a couple of days. Meanwhile there was one mishap that was not expected and roland was on top of this and the owner was so accommodating and got it fixed at no extra charge.During the job there also was a misunderstanding and i couldn't believe this co. that immediately fixed the problem. Once the cement dried the carpenters came in and put the basement back to it's original condition and we had chair rail and wainscott up. The whole job took about 2 weeks but in the end it was worth it. I can't say enough about the company, the owner Anthony, Roland, and the crew all they wanted to do is please the client.

Anthony came by and gave us an estimate for the waterproofing. We then discussed putting our basement back together. Anthony was able to answer all of our questions and put together a detailed estimate that was very reasonable and accurate. His team began the work and Anthony came by frequently to check on progress and make sure we were happy and to make sure there were no questions or issues. If Anthony was unavailable for some reason, he had another member of his management team on standby and she came to check on the work as well. All of the folks on his team were polite, conscientious and did a great job. First they did the waterproofing and then they did the drywall, baseboards and tile. We are very happy with the work and everything looks great!
Description of Work: We had our original waterproofing system fixed. (It was original to the house...) We then had Basement Detective redo all of the drywall and baseboards that had to be taken down for the waterproofing system repairs. To make it look better, we had Basement Detective put down tile instead of carpet throughout the majority of the basement.

First contacted Roland when another basement contractor stated "We don't do anything for less than 20k." (highly unprofessional and not customer friendly...see my review on that company!). Roland visited us NO LESS than 4 times before work even began to sketch out ideas and work with us on what we were looking for. We wanted exterior laundry room wall studded and drywalled, but he took out a moisture meter and advised against it, but advised instead to paint with dry-lock which would save on the bottom line. Roland worked with us EVERY step of the way to make sure we were happy and content. Roland even took the HIGHLY unusual step of telling us that it would be cheaper for us to contract with their subcontractors to paint the 1970's (fake wood) paneling instead of having them using the subcontractor (same with the flooring). Roland was on site everyday as his workers did the tasks (about 3 days worth of work). Every day Roland would be there when we got home from work to explain what had been done and what else needed to be done. The worker were INCREDIBLY meticulous (even the carpenter) with their work and cleanup. The carpenter even ran a TV cable line for free through a wall and into a hidden closet as I mentioned that I wanted to mount a TV on the wall in front of a treadmill. At the end of the job, Roland walked through it with me and two VERY minor mistakes were corrected on the spot (could have done myself, but he insisted that they needed to be done by them as the job was NOT finished unless I was 100% satisfied). Roland even recommended (even though he stated I didn't need it) a self pumping dehumidifier for the laundry room area as he said not only would it help with the moisture but would also help the line dry clothes dry quicker.....good thing I bought one on his advise as I had a minor flooding issue about 5 days later (thank goodness it did not affect the great work Basement Detectives did!!!!) and without the de-humidifier, I would have had some problems! I cannot recommend this company enough for ALL your basement needs!!!!! I definitely plan on using them again when we remodel the basement bathroom!!!
Description of Work: -Paint Existing laundry room with Dry-Lock, install countertops and rolling bins, install drywall on interior wall, demolish and remove old dual concrete utility sink, install new utility sink of choice.-In large basement room extend closets all along wall with new doors, block out ductwork for drywall, drywall ceiling, sand and have drywall paint ready, install new doors on opposite wall in existing closets

Basement Detective was very responsive to our needs and gave us a very reasonable estimate, understanding our budget limitations and letting us know about our options. They began work promptly and the quality was very good. Roland was a delightful representative who handled our many questions and requests with patience and professionalism. We were under great time pressure due to a pending overseas move, so getting work done on time was of the essence. We would give them an "A" rating but ran into a few challenges: The team forgot to call "Miss Utility" so ran into some wiring that made them think we would need to move the site for a planned egress window. (This was remedied and they realized the location was not a problem after all; but it was a bit stressful and a delay of a few days.) We learned from county inspector that we did not in fact need the egress well, as we were "grandfathered in." (We decided to go forward for safety sake, but it is worth checking with county to see if code requirements apply to you in an older home.) Our window frame had to match certain HOA specifications and was special ordered, but when it arrived from another vendor it was the wrong size. That all said, these kind of kinks are bound to happen with home renovations. Basement Detective deserves strong kudos for working with us to "make it right." They understood our time and budget constraints, and wanted us to be satisfied. When all was said and done I don't think they made a profit from us, because they gave us a credit for the challenges we faced. We appreciate that in a business; it is not often you find that integrity. We feel relieved to have a waterproofing system in place in a basement that was, quite frankly, a wretched moldy pit. Now we have some peace of mind and have been able to renovate. Thank you to the team at Basement Detective. We know we weren't your favorite project, but thank you for sticking with us and making it right.

I found water in my basement and assumed it was a foundation problem so I called Basement Detectives. They answered the phone immediately, arranged to have someone come out the next day. He arrived on time and it took him about 10 minutes to figure out that the water in my basement was coming from a problem with my air conditioning overflow pipe - not a foundation problem. This gracious man came all the way out to Loudoun County from Alexandria - helped me diagnose the problem (nothing they could help with) and did a quick tour of my basement to see if any other problems existed. He made a recommendation that I install a pump on a sump well in the corner but said I should use a local contractor for the job because it would be less expensive for me. He then wished me well and left - never asked for any payment or any suggested that he would charge for his time. He must have spent better than an hour in the car getting to my house! I can't tell you how much I appreciate this kind of politeness, integrity and knowledge! I hope I never have a foundation problem but I would hire this company again in a minute if I did! They are that rare breed of true professional!

Basement Detectives was very professional and responsive in helping us determine the source of a basement flooding situation. They sent a senior inspector (Roland) within a few hours of calling them. He was thorough and very polite and professional. Fortunately, it proved not to be a foundation problem, and was instead related to water accumulating from our AC system. He didn't try to oversell any of their services, but instead diagnosed quickly and recommended we contact a heating and AC company. I would've them again!

Obvious yet not drastic water damage in the basement of my home. When I removed the paneling it was even more obvious there was water damage so I had Basement Detective come out to investigate. Roland was very knowledgeable and explained that in my older home (1970) the water was causing damage and leaking moisture into my basement. He explained how to correct the problem before I proceeded with basement renovation. The crew that did the work was on task and did the work in one day. It was a messy and loud job but they did a professional job and cleaned up so well I couldn't even tell they had been there. I am comfortable that my basement will be moisture free and is ready for drywall that won't be damaged in the future. Very professional work and reputable company.

Did not use them and so far we have not had the work done due to other expenses taking precedent. EDIT 3/13/12: Basement detective gave me an estimate for doing the entire job whereas the lower estimate was using what I have in place sealing the wall and then putting a vapor barrier. I have been in contact with Basement Detectives who assured me they can match that price for what will be done or beat it. Unfortunately, at this time addtional expenses have arisen and we will have to wait. Basement Detective understood my situation and just ask for a revisit take everything in consideration, they will reevaluate my basement if the quality is not compromised by using what is in place then they will give me a new estimate. But they will not cut quality for expense which I feel is an excellent outlook on their work to be performed. With their assurance they will reevaluate and inspect everything and then make a decision if the less expensive method will not cut the quality then they will give me a revised estimate. That is an excellent way to run a business, KEEPING QUALITY FIRST!
Description of Work: Their representative came out. I was given an estimate and what they would do. I had 2 other companies give me an estimate and this company was the highest. The rep was courteous on time and cordial. Did not use them as they were the highest and basically all three companies were going to do the same work. EDIT 3/13/12: The cost to redo what I had done is basically the same with all three companies. In comparing what they would do and what expense was to be charged they were actually the same and maybe a little lower . I errored in my first evaluation as THEIR estimate was for a complete job. Whereas the low estimate was using what was in place. When basement detectives called back they advised me if all I wanted was a sealant and water barrier they could match and perhaps beat the estimate I was given. Basement detective included replacing the sump pump whereas the other did not. I may be using them afterall. My apologies to them and anyone that read my initial evaluation.

Anthony from Basement Detective was at our house at least once each day, and on the phone with us several times each day to let us know how the work was progressing. He was on top of everything, had a great relationship with Raul and Angel, and was always available when we had a question about something. We couldn't have been happier with the professionalism, quality, and customer service that was offered by Basement Detective. If you have a water problem, give them a call. Like us, you'll be glad you did!
Description of Work: Trust these guys! We were in the process of buying a home in Northern Virginia and asked Basement Detective to look at a mold issue identified by our home inspector. Roland from Basement Detective was out there within a day, and spent over an hour surveying our house. We are skeptical by nature, and it took some "hand holding" by Roland to convince us that we had water seeping through our foundation in to our house for some time, and that we had water damage and a major mold problem behind the walls. After much discussion, we agreed to contract with Basement Detective to fix our problem. First, a crew came in to take down all of the affected walls and framing. We were shocked by the extent of water damage and mold behind our walls. Roland was absolutely right in his initial assessment! The crew removed all of it, and disposed of it. We were now looking at the bare cinder block foundation, and saw a clear line of seeping water exactly where Roland told us it would be. After removing all of the wet/moldy building material, the crew used a jackhammer to dig out a foot-wide trench at the base of the affected wall - Yikes! Raul, the foreman, kept us calm as he explained what he was doing each step of the way. After digging out a trench, the crew installed drains along the bottom of the wall, and installed a sump pump in one corner. They also drilled holes in the bottom of the foundation to allow water to escape. They filled in the trench with gravel, and cemented over it, using a special liner against the cinder block to route any seeping water down in to the trench. The cemented portion lined up exactly with the existing cement floor. They then installed a vapor barrier on the inside of the cinder block foundation. Raul was very proud of his work, and told us that we would never have a water problem again. After the cement dried, Basement Detective sent in another crew to reframe the wall and reinstall our new drywall. They did an amazing job, even spending extra time to make sure our pergo floor was reinstalled properly. Angel, the foreman for this crew, explained that they do alot of work for Basement Detective. His crew is used to coming in behind Raul's crew and knew exactly what to do. Angel was also excellent on the customer service end, answering our questions and making small changes at our request. All together, this was a three-day project.
