Well, first of all, the representative was on time and he did a complete inspection of my entire basement. He came up with two options to fix the problem, one from the outside ( I decided against that option because they would have had to dig up my new patio) and an inside option that involved drain pipes that were installed under my floor and a sump pump in the basement. The workmen showed up on time and finished the entire HUGE job in just 3 days. The workmen seemed to work non-stop and were very polite and curious. They cleaned up after themselves and the company gave me a warranty that I am very happy with. If I ever move and have the same problem, I would absolutely call Basement Detectives again!
Description of Work: I had a problem with water seeping into my basement from 3 different places. One place was just a bit damp and the other two actually had some water puddling on the floor, about 1/4 inch deep! those areas were unfinished, so it was easy to see the problem develop every time it rains hard.

Thomas showed up on time Wednesday July 8th, to provide us with an estimate to fix/replace the sump pump and basement window well wall. He was friendly, took measurements, explained the problem and solution to fix our flooded basement. We were interested in replacing our large aluminum window well wall that had a rather large crack allowing water to flood into the window well on rainy days. He said due to its size he would have to make some calls to see if he can find a replacement and that he would call us back in a few days with an estimate for fixing/replacing the sump pump and well wall. Unfortunately we never heard back from him or the company. I would have followed up but was happy with the estimate I received from a competing company the next day. Can't really comment on the quality of the work but also can't see myself ever contracting this company if they don't bother following up on their initial visit.
Description of Work: Was supposed to give us an estimate for fixing sump pump and window well wall.

GREAT COMPANY, GREAT EXPERIENCE. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Anthony and Thomas came in, reviewed the situation and provided us with a detailed explanation of what was happening and how they could fix it. Water was leaking into the finished basement bedroom during heavy rains and then soaking the carpet. The leak was coming in through small stress fractures in the basement wall. They provided us a detailed estimate on the repair work and said the work would take about a week to 10 days. They started on the 8th of July and finished on the 22nd. Originally they would have to remove two walls (sheetrock and framing), jackhammer the cement basement floor at the juncture of the wall and floor, install a drainage system and sump pump, then put everything back into place. The company does everything except the carpet work. We had to move all the bedroom furniture out of the room, so they could work. The crew showed up exactly on time, installed plastic sheeting to keep the dust out of the rest of the house, laid down work tarps so the carpet in the rest of the basement didn't get dirty and got to work. We went on vacation for a week right after they started. We got detailed periodic updates from Thomas, once we got home we rarely heard them, they came and went through the basement doors and kept the noise level very low. Nestor or the team leader let us know when they came in in the morning and when they left in the evening. There was never a communications problem. The crew discovered another water leak on the third wall while we were gone and Thomas immediately called and texted me with pictures and an solution. The addition of adding a third wall didn't not add too much to the overall cost of the work but did increase the length of the project. Basement Detectives took most of the stress out of a very stressful situation. They were upfront about the entire project, there weren't any surprises. They stand behind their work. I would recommend them in a heartbeat, I will only use this company in the future.

Roland was friendly, punctual and very knowledgeable. He even called me after he had already left with one more suggestion on the shower leak issue.
Description of Work: Roland came out and told me that I had a shower leak that I didn't even know I had. He used a water/dampness detector to locate it. He then gave me an easy fix for my flooding basement that simply involved caulking and installing flashing on the outside of house and perhaps relocating one gutter downspout. He didn't try to sell me anything and I can totally see why this company has a high customer satisfaction rating. Thanks!
Please contact Basement Detective first if you have a problem with water in your basement. We had water in our basement. We asked a plumber and two basement waterproofing companies to look at the problem. The waterproofing companies wanted to dig up the basement floor and install French drains at a cost of thousands of dollars. Roland Hook, a senior inspector from Basement Detective looked at the problem and quickly inferred that the water was coming from the air conditioning unit. Based on his experience, he could tell that was the problem by the location of the leak and the type of water in the basement. There was no charge for his inspection. Based on his recommendation, we had a plumber look at the air conditioner and he confirmed that the pipe that was supposed to drain the condensation was completely clogged, confirming the inspector's diagnosis.
Description of Work: Inspected water in basement and diagnosed that source of water was from air conditioner unit.
Description of Work: The service provider came out to do an estimate on waterproofing the basement where water was coming in. Unfortunately it turned out to be a structural/decking leaking problem. Not something a waterproofing company dealt with, but just the same Tomas Arndt knew exactly what the situation was. How the deck was built and where the water was coming from. He was beyond professional with me in explaining the situation and looking at the work. What a reputable company. Thank you Angies List.

The inspector (Roland) showed up exactly on time and asked few general questions about the situation. The inspector then lifted the carpet to determine which area has been damaged, checked the interior and exterior walls for possible issues, and conducted moisture tests of the floor and the wall. It was concluded that the leak was not coming from the foundation but instead from a different source, most likely a broken hose bib pipe near the location of the leak. During the entire inspection the inspector was very professional and took time to fully answer my questions and explain what he was doing (as well as pointing out what would be the symptoms that he would be expecting to find in case of a foundation problems). In the end Basement Detective only performed the free inspection, but I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation. I am very happy with the service I received, namely, I am glad that I received an inspection rather than a sales pitch or a solution to a problem I did not have (I still have to take care of the broken pipe, but at least I do not have to worry about a foundation issue).
Description of Work: A basement inspection was scheduled for a water leak that appeared under the carpet.

Basement Detectives sent Roland to inspect my sump pump and give a quote for possible sump pump back-up system. He arrived promptly at the designated appointment time and after inspecting my sump pump, sump pump well, and outside drainage, he made some very helpful recommendations and told me that his company was more focused on foundation repairs. As a result of his honest assessment and professionalism, I was definitely left with the belief that this is an extremely straightforward and honest company. They do not recommend work that is not needed. If I have any water leakage issues in my basement, I will definitely call Basement Detectives again and am leaving the very best rating because of how Roland conducted business today. Work was not performed by this company because it was not needed.
Description of Work: After consultation with Basement Detectives, it was determined that their services were not needed at this time.

They are excellent. I interviewed probably about eight companies and that was the biggest job that I had. It wasn't so easy to find somebody that I trusted. They were the most expensive by far but they offered two of the best quality sump pumps. From interviewing people I realized that for this job we I need the best pump and that are the zoeller pump. Some people said that one would enough and some people said I had to have two but I decided to go with the two and made sure it was going to be two zoellers. They did an excellent job and I'm very happy with their work. They were very flexible in terms of the prize. In order for them to create what is called French drain; they had to make sure that there was no asbestos to endanger their workers. They connect with another company that comes and checks the asbestos. They work in conjunction with this other company. The cost was split with another company and the guy that I worked with was Thomas Arndt. He arranged so that I didn't have to pay more because of the asbestos situation. The cost included the other company that dealt with the asbestos. Another thing that I liked was I asked them if they had financing and they said yes. They do offer financing which I think the other member should know because it's very important.
Description of Work: I used Basement Detective for basement waterproofing. They installed two zoeller pumps as well.

Would highly recommend this service. Roland did a great job for us, is very professional and experienced. He is a true detective, and not only solved the mystery of the basement moisture situation which had been of concern to us, but recommended common sense solutions which have been most valuable. An excellent service and much appreciated.
Description of Work: Roland arrived at my house promptly at the appointed time and immediately began to work. He carefully examined our basement where an inspector said there was moisture, and then also the outside of the house, the roof and the gutters to determine the source of the problem. After that he measured with some technical moisture equipment. finally he sat down with us, carefully explained what he had found and his analysis of both the problem and the remedy options available and their cost. Later he sent us a written summary of what he had discussed with us verbally.

Mr. Roland Hook is a Senior Inspector with the company, one who was punctual and professional in all areas. He came to my residence because I have had water leaking in my living room since June; water which three other companies all have given me estimates of up to $10,000 for repairs - all outside repairs, from sump pumps, French drain systems, drywells, grass/sod, etc. He went outside and found that on my roof, water is coming in from an area where my siding is missing. Using a "moisture meter", he was able to state that water is coming down the walls between my home and next door into my living room. That is my problem. The water is not coming from the areas outside that other companies have said. I need a roofer instead of waterproofing companies and/or home improvement companies. He has saved me thousands of dollars and for that I greatly appreciate his honesty. The other people I have dealt with should take advice from him.
Description of Work: Provided insight on the water leaking into my living room, causing carpet ruin and possible mold/smell.

I was extremely pleased with the Basement Dectective service. Thomas arrived on time and did a very thorough job of assessing the problem. He did a much more extensive job than any of the other people who had been out before and at no cost. My issue was not a clear cut one and Thomas took it as a challenge to figure it out. He examined both inside and outside the house and was patient in explaining what he was and wasn't seeing. (And he noticed some telltale signs that others had missed.). In the end he suggested doing some work that his company really doesn't do. (Only the second company to do so.). I will definitely recommend Beasement Detective and Thomas to others with wet basement issues.
Description of Work: Thomas came out to assess a wet basement issue.
We suffered from several basement floods over the years and finally had enough. After researching several providers on Angie's List we asked Basement Detective to come out and quote the job. Roland was knowledgable and provided a fair price. Their guys came in and completed the work over a two day period. While this is a very dirty job. These guys were clean and respectful of the house. After the work was completed, we had our contractor come back in to repair and paint the walls. The job was complete (excluding the carpet and we were happy). Literally, the hour after our painter left the house, we had another huge rain storm and amazingly the basement began flooding again. I called Roland and let him know what was happening. Within two hours of my call Roland, Anthony and their top installer showed up to the house to inspect the problem. Apparently, I am the first customer in their 9 years of work that has had a problem after they installed the waterproofing system. When they showed up Anthony made it very clear that they would do whatever it took to fix the problem and that I would not be responsible for the cost. Over the next couple weeks they proceeded to remove all the walls in my basement, added a vapor barrier to my walls, re-dug and re-piped various trenches, replaced the sump pump, added a battery backup and even re-flashed the exterior of my house where it met the deck. They then replaced the walls and repainted. All this was done with a smile, without argument, and in the most professional manner possible. And I paid nothing more to have this extra work done!! I cannot express how grateful, appreciative and simply amazed I am at the professionalism of Basement Detective. They stand by their contract and most importantly they stand by their word. We have now carpeted the basement, added furniture and a new TV. You have given us a room that we are confident is usable at all times. Thank you Anthony, Roland and the rest of your team.

Thomas came by to detect what had caused a portion of our basement to flood. He was super friendly, knowledgable and most importantly honest. He did not rush, but spent the time needed to evaluate the situation. After fully scoping out the basement and checking for any potential foundation issues, he realized that the issue was probably with the plumping in our bathroom. He helped alleviate the potential leak, gave us instructions as to what to watch for and next steps to take. If you want an honest evaluation call Basement Detective. Thomas provided excellent customer service and gained our trust for future projects.

They pulled permits with Prince William County. They dug up the basement around a parameter for a part of the basement and put in weeping tiles as well as a new sump pump. They did everything they said they would as they would. The work was done very quickly and as promised. Everything was on schedule. They did not damage any walls when carrying the stuff up from the basement and newly painted walls. They also protected the floors as they did the work. We would recommend them.

Our basement had sprung a small but faucet like leak. The gentleman who showed up was very nice, checked various moisture levels, and gave some asseent of our problem. However, it seems like his company was pushing the sale of a french drain system, and no other clear options were provided. Again, he seemed very nice and knowledgable and maybe that is our only option, but we will be seeking a second opinion on the matter just in case.

The person that came to look at my basement must have just been a sales person because they had no clue about the problem. I had two other companies come out and they both within seconds understood the problem. The guy from basement detectives just said they couldn't help, that we needed a plumber. We don't need a plumber we need a new drainage system under our floor to get the water to the sump-pump. They should send more educated people out to quote issues because otherwise it appears that they are not qualified to diagnose an issue and fix water problems

Why doesn't Angie's List have an A++ category?? Having become weary over horrific experiences with contractors, it was a great sigh of relief when the crew from Basement Detective showed up at my house and got straight to work. The crew was fast, efficient and worked VERY HARD, and from the sound of their laughter and conversations, seemed to really like each other and enjoy their work. When the drainage system and sump pump were installed, they walked me outdoors so I could watch gallons upon gallons of water, which had previously been creating pressure against my foundation, gush away from my house. They take pride in their work! How often do you see that nowadays? Truly a great experience, I highly recommend them! Great, great, job.
Description of Work: Installed drainage and sump pump in my basement.
I can sum up Basement Detective in one word: Professional. I called them to set up an appointment. Mark of Basement Detective showed up on time. He assessed our water problem in a short time and explained how he would solve the problem. He said he would send an email when he went home. Email showed up before I went to bed. No up selling, no pressure. He provided an estimate then asked how I heard of them. When I said Angie's List he gave the Angie's List discount without me asking for it. We had several estimates given previously. The big companies try to oversell. Basement Detective determined precisely what we needed. The work was done in one day and at a high quality. The workers performed the work like they had done it a million times. They worked quick, efficient, and neatly (as neatly as you can when you are digging up a basement). They were not the cheapest estimate but I gladly pay for excellent service. They checked to make sure they did not need a Montgomery County inspection and once they verified they did not, they refunded the amount of the inspection. I am very happy with the work that was performed. The major rains we have had recently tested the system well. We have had no water in our basement. I can see the water pumping out of the pipe they installed. You can trust these guys.
Description of Work: Installed french drain and sump pump.
We bought our home last year and everything was remodeled. So we had to rip out some walls in the basement to find out what was going on. Apparently our home has had water issues in the basement for years. The Owners decided to cover that all up. In addition, we had 2 layers of asbestos tiles on the floor under the new carpet. Roland came out and did a very good job with his inspection. We had everything removed to begin work but the Asbestos tiles overlapped into the work area. Since my wife took off the day from work and with such a busy schedule ahead of us, Basement Detective paid for the abatement work. They came back out and finished the job. I would like to thank the entire crew for a job well done. I would recommend them over other companies. Basement Detective has some of the best customer service I've seen in the construction field.
