Arva did me a tremendous favor by telling me that it would cost almost as much to repair a counter-top microwave as it would to buy new. I so much appreciated Arva's professional honesty and especially that they did not waste my time or money! I will certainly call on them in the future.

Very responsive - Arva worked with realtor to fix dryer in unoccupied home before closing. Diagnosed broken belt - replaced that and pulley. If replacing belt hadn't fully fixed, was willing to also diagnose circuitry if that had been at fault, though we both agreed that would probably be too expensive a fix. Overall very pleased with speed of response (contacted Wednesday, service conducted Saturday) and diagnosis.

In mid Dec. 2016 we set up first appt. they did not show up during window of time, we had to call them. They said they would not make it that day and rescheduled appt. 2nd appt. they showed up late after we had to call them, and only took down a serial number to order a part. They informed us that the part was going to take awhile before getting it. They scheduled an appt. and did not show up in the window of time, we had to call them again. They came late that day and made an adjustment to the latch. The next day -still did not work. We had to call them again to schedule another appt. again did not show up during window of time, Came late. They said they would have to order the part. Weeks went by, we had to call them several times, only to find out no part available. We requested a refund, they agreed to refund $40.00 and said they would put it in the mail. 2 weeks went by still no refund. Had to call them again for refund. Said they would send it out. Received check in the mail Feb. 4 with a note saying thanks for reminding me to send the refund. .

The owner was friendly and responsive, and he was able to come the next day and showed up on time. But I was very disappointed in his service. On the day he came, the machine did agitate, but despite my detailed explanations and mentioning that this has happened several times before, he implied that I did not know how to use the machine and that the non-agitation was actually a soak cycle. When I asked him if he could just replace the part that was causing the problem (knowing that I was not going to be able to convince him), he said it would probably be cost-prohibitive. He told me just to buy a new machine. I also asked if he could replace the broken knob on the temperature adjuster and this also seemed like a big deal and he said it'd be way too expensive: The part would be $113, labor $50. Definitely cheaper than buying a new machine. Two days later the machine stopped agitating again, but we will be calling a different service technician this time.
Description of Work: My 2010 GE washing machine has been acting up for about a year, sometimes agitating, sometimes not. On the day that I called Arva, it did not agitate on any setting.

The two year old Cabrio washer needed a computer module that cost $415. I opted to let it go and buy a new one. I want to say that George (the owner) is honest, experienced, and absolutely wonderful. He will advise and help you make decisions without regard for monetary gain. I have used Arva for at least ten years and recommend it highly.

Service was for kitchen refrigerator and garage freezer. Leak under fridge was diagnosed as a bad water filter housing, which they replaced for $300. Next morning it's leaking again, so they returned and replaced hose leading to filter housing. Leaked again the next day. Garage freezer was flashing error code "CE" and beeping. Technicians seem stumped and made several calls and asked to use my home computer to research code. Finally determined they needed to replace main circuit board, which they ordered and installed 3 days later. Error code still flashing. Next they ordered a front panel circuit board which they installed 3 days later. Error and beeping still continued. After we paid them $333 for the parts they told us we should just "junk it". Although both guys were nice, they didn't seem to know what they were really doing. I wouldn't call them again. Instead, we called another repair company who correctly diagnosed the fridge problem as a cracked drip pan which they replaced for only $121 including the service call.
Description of Work: Lots of visits to repair our kitchen refrigerator leak and our garage upright freezer error code/beeping. Total cost was over $600 and they didn't fix either appliance. After graciously accepting a personal check for the freezer - they advised us to "junk it".

As we were getting our house ready for sale, we discovered that our second dishwasher in the basement which was a vintage Maytag didn't work because it didn't latch properly. We called Mr. Cole at Arva based on the recommendation of our Realtor. Mr. Cole tracked down the part for the 12 year old dishwasher and installed it. But when he tried to test the dishwasher, it still wasn't working. He diagnosed the problem as a failed pressure switch and tried to fix it with a switch he had in his truck but that didn't work. He again tracked down the right part and came back a couple of days later to install it. The dishwasher then worked fine. We were very grateful to find someone as thorough as Mr. Cole who insisted on testing the system and was able to find the secondary problem. In the end, the repairs were cheaper than buying a new dishwasher. Arva is now at the top of our list for appliance repair needs.

UPDATE: Based on response from Arva Appliance, it appears that many of the issues I had with my repair were due to the property management company rather than Arva, so I upgraded my review from an "F" to a "B". As I stated in my original review, the repairman was very friendly and courteous, and the end result was a fully functional icemaker. However, the repairman wasn't thorough in diagnosing the problem which meant they had to visit four times when the issue could have been fixed in two. Also, cleanup wasn't ideal, with some materials left in the kitchen each time. If I needed a repair, though, I'd probably give them another shot.

Response from Arva Appliance Service
Thank you for your review. I would like to talk with you further about it. Please give me a call at 703-360-1113. My original work order was for a non functioning ice maker. When I originally checked the Refrigerator, the ice maker had broken tines and was jammed with plastic wrappers. Since I was called to repair an ice maker and I found one broken I did not look further at that point. It was only after I replaced it that I discovered the refrigerator was not hooked up to water. Evidently it had been turning thru the cycle and twisted up the plastic bread wrapper that broke it. I had to wait for authorization to hook up the water line

Microwave functioned again, although only for a few days. Both we and ARVA knew that it might be a temporary fix - sometimes it works, sometimes not. The $59 charge was applicable to a new microwave from ARVA. When the problem returned ARVA responded to our call and said they had been in contact with the manufacturer - SAMSUNG - and that SAMSUNG would repair what was a manufacturing defect. This information was not available on line - despite many complaints from purchasers of this model. It took several phone calls to different offices of SAMSUNG but they are now scheduled to come and repair the microwave. In sum, ARVA was on time, courteous, professional and, ultimately, most helpful.

I woke up this morning and discovered that my dryer was so hot to touch is literally burned my hip and hand when I touched it - this was after I had Sears come yesterday to fix the squeaking sound the dryer was making. I unplugged the dryer and called Sears and asked them to send someone back immediately because I felt like it was a fire hazard. Of course they couldn't send someone out for 10 days (more on that interaction on my Sear's review) so I searched for a local company. I called ARVA Appliance Service and they had 2 technicians there within 2 hours. They were so nice, knowledgeable and professional and fixed the issue without any problems. The motor had a short in it and it was a fire hazard. I will use them again for all my appliances and recommend them completely!

I was impressed. I contacted Arva Appliance late in the evening after I discovered my fridge wasn't working. The technician came out within 24 hours. He was polite, pleasant, and reassuring. He pulled the fridge away from the wall, replaced burned out wiring in the back, and discovered that the home owner before me had used a standard white electrical extension cord to plug in the fridge to a 2-prong wall outlet. I explained that I'd been having trouble adjusting the temperature and turning the fridge on/off using the digital display. He observed that the controller seemed to be burned out, and while replacing the wires got the fridge on again, it wasn't possible to adjust the temp up or down, or turn the fridge off once it was running. He ordered the replacement controller, and came out later in the week to install it. He and I were surprised to find that the part, while the correct number for the fridge serial and model numbers, did not match the original controller device. He recommended I contact Frigidaire directly for service help with the required part. He was most apologetic about being unable to install the replacement part and he even called back several days later to see if I'd been able to resolve the problem with a Frigidaire repair company. I feel I received very professional help and excellent service with the basic problem of burned out wiring, because he came out quickly and got the fridge running. Even though he couldn't resolve the second half of the repair with the replacement controller, he didn't charge me for the second visit and he referred me to the manufacturer for further help. I would definitely use this company again for major appliance repairs based on this experience.

The fan motor went out on Sunday (Father's Day). We consulted Angie's List and phoned Potomac Appliance. On Monday, Potomac responded and referred us to Arva Appliance after they learned where I was located. I was advised to ask for George Cole and told that he could probably have a service call conducted the same day. I did as advised, and George sent a repairman over within 90 minutes. He quickly identified the problem and provided an estimate, indicating he could handle the problem in about an hour. I approved the work and he obtained a replacement motor and installed it as indicated.

We called to see about having the gasket replaced and they ordered the part. When the part came in they told us it was the wrong part. So they sent it back and reordered our part. They scheduled to come out when the gasket came in and said they'd be here on Wednesday and they'd call in the morning to let us know what time they'd arrive. Wednesday morning they called and said they were calling to schedule an appointment. I told them they were supposed to be here that day and they said they needed to reschedule. So we rescheduled for Friday and they said they'd call Friday morning to let us know what time they'd arrive. Friday morning they called and said they were calling to schedule and appointment. I told them they were supposed to be here that day and they said they needed to reschedule. This happened two more times. When they finally came to install my new gasket, it was the wrong gasket and the repairman complained because there was vacuuming going on in the house and it was too loud! SO we called the owner, George, and told him what had been going on and he begged to make things right and offered to only charge us for the part. We agreed and the right part came in and they were supposed to arrive at my house between noon and three p.m. but called to say they were on their way at 9:30 a.m. I called George because I wasn't ready for the repairman to come and he said he would take care of it, but low and behold, 45 minutes later the repairman showed up at my door. I let him in and called George back just to keep him informed and he assured me that we'd only be paying for the part. When it came time to pay, the repairman said we owed $225.00 so I called George. He told me to put the repairman on the phone and when he hung up he said it was only going to be $200.00. At this point I paid the man and sent him on his way, after he tried to leave his box and the old gasket in the middle of my kitchen floor. From the original time we requested the repair, it took more than seven weeks to actually get it done.

We hired Arva because they had fixed the same problem for us 4 months earlier and we'd been very happy with their services. The first time, they charged us only $60. They were very courteous, very thorough, and even stayed to make sure the machine was working properly after they completed their work. When they did the job this time, they charged double--$120. The technician knew that the job had cost only $60 last time--he asked to see the original receipt--yet he said nothing about why he was charging more. (My husband was too uncomfortable to ask him.) To our knowledge, the work was no more complicated or time-consuming. (If anything, it was easier this time, because last time the dishwasher had been shutting off mid-cycle and that wasn't a problem this time.) When I called the office the next day to ask about the price difference, I didn't get a satisfactory explanation. When I asked why the second job was twice as expensive, the gentleman who answered said (somewhat cheekily), "Because it was done right." I reminded him that both times the work had been done by Arva technicians. He said he couldn't really give me any information because he hadn't talked to his technician yet. After some urging, he agreed to do so and have someone call me back. A week has passed and no one has called me. I don't expect to hear from anyone. I'm so disappointed; I thought I had found a reliable, affordable appliance-repair company in my community to help me care for my town home as it ages, and instead I feel like I've been played as a chump at a time when I can ill afford it. At the very least I would have liked to have been treated with a little more respect and consideration.
Description of Work: We hired Arva because our dishwasher wasn't draining properly--at the end of the cycle, there was still water in the bottom of the dishwasher. They unclogged a hose for us.

I called on a Monday afternoon and they were able to send someone out within an hour. Our refrigerator was not cooling well. The guy came and diagnosed a broken defrost heater and thermostat. He came back the next morning with the parts and fixed it. I thought it was quite pricey but the speed and courtesy with which they treated me really counted for a lot. If you have time to wait a few days, you can probably get a better price, but I would definitely call these guys again especially if the situation is urgent.

I checked out your list, then the BBB and also for county legal actions pending and it all looked OK. I chose this company mainly on the basis of other recommendations on your list-particularly as they related to washing machines.. Fortunately my husband was home for the day and was able to oversee the gentleman's work....which he had no issues about. I fully expected that the repairman would have to 'run' somewhere for a part, but he didn't. THAT was a surprise in itself! While it seems like a bit of money to pay for the repair, it was overall hassle-free and a LOT easier than buying another machine! Honestly, it was too easy? I keep waiting for the 'death throes' of the machine to sound again..must be the pessimist in me. We shall see? I guess I could let you know in another month?
Description of Work: Our 7 year old washing machine stopped agitating, spinning and draining water. I called their service at about 9am and was promised a service tech at approximately 2pm that day! Repairman took a look at the machine and had the part in his truck and was done in just over an hour. The repairman was clean polite and efficient. Overall for a major repair, it was pleasant almost.

The oven seems hotter and more responsive than before it broke, though this could be our imagination in the hot summer--how could a new igniter make the oven hotter?? On time, polite, willing to explain the process. Seemed like it should have been closer to a $100 job though. Something possibly fishy about his asking for a $220 check to the company and $20 in cash because he ''forgot his wallet'' that day and needed to buy lunch. I'd be happy to tip if that's expected or even appreciated, but if he plays this game with everyone, it's kind of unprofessional. Thanks for making me think about this, Angie; I might call the company and ask if they've heard of guys doing this regularly.
Description of Work: We had replaced an electric relay module on our stove ourselves a couple months ago. Recently, the oven no longer lit but the stove was fine. We tested the oven wires with a light bulb and got no light but would, we assumed, have had to mess with the gas line to remove stuff and would have had to keep buying non-returnable parts at an electric supply. So we put everything back and screwed all the covers on (they don't like to work on something when you've got the guts all over the floor). Found this company recommended on Angie's List. Very friendly, knowledgeable guy. It was the igniter gone bad--it attaches to the bar the gas comes out of and is easily removable; he didn't need to remove the gas line or shut it down. $240 seemed high for one little-arse screw-in part and 15 minutes labor (and as it turned out, an adjustment to a setting we'd left on ''bottled gas''), though it's less than half what you'd pay for a new range. You could fix it yourself now that you've read this.

Somewhat disappointing. The technician tested the dryer and said it was a problem with our circuit breaker. He said we needed an electrician to replace a breaker. He was in and out in 10 minutes, and charged us just for the service call. When the electrician came, he traced the wiring to a fuse box (in between the washer and circuit box) and quickly replaced the washer fuse. Turned out it was not a circuit breaker, something much simpler, and the electrician said this was something the appliance guy probably could have been able to do himself and save us the second service call fee. The ARVA technician was polite, punctual, and everything, and I don't think he was trying to rip us off. I just think he could have been more thorough and traced the line to see what the cause of the problem was.

Description of Work: Our stack clothes washer was squealing terribly on spin. The technician said the bearings were dry. Great experience. They have friendly phone service and good communication in terms of scheduling exact time of visit.
