"[Member Name] is judging her entire "bad experience" based on a very troubling time she had with this generator just after her installation in 2012 - a situation that she caused and in my opinion should have been avoided. That unfortunate experience has provided her a continual complaint platform to base every service call from even though it was no fault of ours. She feels that the installing contractor is responsible for everything associated with that purchase irrespective of who's actually responsible and she fails to understand that we, the installing contractor, are not the entity warrantying the generator. The manufacturer is the responsible party for warranty but yet we went above what was required to assist her and she still complains. This review stems from her allowing this unit to run without oil during a (long term) outage to a point it shut off under low oil pressure. When she called upset that the unit had shut off we informed her (again) of the proper procedure on how and when to check the oil. At that time (we assume) she checked the oil and filled to clear the fault as she was unwilling to pay for a service call to have a technician drive to her home to assist her. After some time we were called again stating the unit was not running and would not start. I (personally) performed a service call to determine the issue with the unit. Upon arrival I found the unit in LOP fault and noticed the oil fill cap missing with aluminum foil covering the valve cover. At that time, [Member Name] stated she had lost the cap. With oil covering the interior of the housing it was apparent that oil had been leaking for some time. I attached the laptop to download the history of the unit and found it had shut down several times under LOP - indicating the unit was leaking oil. At that time I performed a visual inspection of the unit and verified a crack in the block from running out of oil. Although this issue was not our doing and was not fault we provided her a new engine under warranty. She was unappreciative and has continued to be difficult to deal with for service. We provide a step by step instruction to every new client on how to check the oil but we cannot be responsible for clients that lose items and do not tell us and continue to use the unit with no means of properly securing the oil system. The Kohler Warranty procedures specifically states what is covered and for what period of time and we do not provide additional coverage. We went above and beyond to provide [Member Name] a replacement. Since that time she has been unreasonable and we simply cannot continue to give her free parts and service when her unit breaks down. This review states that we are mean but if being mean is making her pay for what is required to maintain her unit then we will be "mean" because like it or not we are a business and not a charity. I cannot stress enough that clients are required to perform basic operational measures (check the oil every 24 hours of continuous operation) to maintain their unit and we are not responsible for those units that are not operated in the proper manner. We are happy to assist clients in every way but we cannot be blamed for those that do not follow simple instructions."
Technician Kevin Collins visited us, made a thorough inspection inside and outside our house, and answered many of my questions. Elite followed up with a formal proposal as an email attachment. Through telephone calls and emails I was able to clarify several points about the proposal and options I was considering such as remote monitoring and a whole house surge protector. Elite didn't make a sales pitch on the options but clearly presented information on them so I could make a decision. In the end I signed a contract for the basic package, electing to get the basic installation squared away and leaving decisions about add-ons as options for the future.
A key advantage to choosing Elite is that they provide turn-key service on their projects. They have both electricians and gas plumbers on staff to handle those hookups. They also obtain all necessary permits, deal with the gas utility to schedule split meter or meter upgrade work if needed, and line up the county inspection at the end of the project. The customer only has to deal with one organization -- Elite.
Our project began on October 28 and concluded on October 31 with a start-up inspection of the generator and automatic transfer switch, orientation of homeowner to the procedure for conducting generator self-tests, and inspection and clearance by a Fairfax County inspector.
The quality of work, attention to detail, and professionalism on the part of Elite's work crew were excellent. Kudos to Hector and Brian for their work in wiring the ATS and transfer circuits and to Arturo and Zack on the gas connection work and helpful answers to several questions -- and sincere appreciation to the workers who skillfully installed the garden timber base and sited the generator. Thanks also to Kelly for his expertise and answers to my questions and to Stephanie and Andreea in the front office for handling the contracting process and daily scheduling. Finally, special thanks to Kevin Collins, who was on site at the beginning and conclusion of the project. Kevin did our initial onsite estimate and was present on the last day for Elite's start-up inspection, customer orientation, and county inspection. Kevin is extremely knowledgeable and helpful to customers. He is a great asset to Elite Power and Energy Corporation.
It went very well.
I chose a Kohler 20KW generator because it can power both of the air conditioning systems without need to selectively power only certain circuits. When the power fails, this unit will support the whole house. Kelly at Elite recommended this solution and I concurred. The Elite proposal process is a bit different from the others. It starts with telephone review. Go with it. These are good people and it works.
Why choose Kohler when maybe 80% of residential generators are made by Generac? I did my research, starting in the internet. I then spoke to a friend who is a master electrician who works at a national financial institution headquarters. Their computers have to run regardless of power losses. He works with the backup power systems that include big industrial generators. This guy knows power and generators. He told me to go with Kohler.
Let?s get this out of the way ? you can get a Generac for less money, but my research said that you get what you pay for.
The results were interesting after installation when we tested the unit. The controller diagnostics in the generator show the quality of the power in use, usually the grid. Dominion Power did not look very good. We switched to generator power and saw almost perfect power. I was worried about generator power hurting my computers, but now I feel safer on generator. Kohler claims cleaner power than the competition, and the claim looks reasonable. The system has been installed for about a month and it is running its exercises just fine. It works.
I have met a number of people who have experienced lightning damage and it is a nightmare, very expensive. My brother had wires burn up inside the walls. Imagine what it can do to a delicate appliance. A whole house surge suppressor is now needed for your computers, and also for lots of other appliances (furnace & A/C, oven, refrigerator, TV, washer, dryer, and more every day). In the average home, too many things with computers inside can be damaged by power spikes (surges). Spikes can be caused by many more things than lightning. (Note: You still need the little power protection unit under your computer desk because you can generate a spike within your home. Among other things, any time you see an electrical spark it probably causes a spike in the lines. A whole house unit only protects against external spikes.)
So, this was a perfect opportunity to add a whole house surge suppressor. I chose the Kohler unit which is bigger than some of the others and probably more robust. During installation, I asked the Elite techs how often the Kohler units fail. They looked at each other a bit puzzled and concluded that they had never had to replace one. It costs more than some competing units ($500 vs $200) but it is very likely better. Cheap insurance. Get it.
Why Elite? I got proposals from four contractors and some of them appeared thoughtful and capable. When I decided on Kohler the best ratings I found for a Kohler installer were for Elite. The price was higher so I spoke with my master electrician friend. He knew Elite and said they know what they are doing. Buy quality.
One thing to look for ? some contractors only do the electrical work and sub out the gas work. Elite does both the electrical and the gas work themselves. This is better.
The job took 3+ days. Started on Monday and was complete by Wednesday afternoon. Thursday morning was for the building inspector. No scheduling problems.
The gas and electric lines had to run through a brick wall and then up and through the finished ceiling of a carport, back down and then underground. Fortunately, there were no puzzles but it was not a job for amateurs. Hector spotted a grounding issue in the original distribution panel and corrected it as he worked there. He told me it had to be right if he was to be the last electrician in that panel.
Note that Elite does not do carpentry. I had to get access openings in the carport ceiling. My regular carpenter did this and it was not a problem. You might be able to do the access carpentry yourself. I also had to get the gas meter swapped for a larger one and I ended up with two gas pressure regulators. It now starts with high pressure (2 psi) that goes only to the generator. The extra pressure is needed because of the long run to the generator. The second pressure regulator is set to standard house pressure (1/2 psi) and it supplies everything else. Washington Gas did this work (as they must) and I am not thrilled.
I watched the Elite techs the whole time. I was interested, not worried. There were at least 4 techs there every day and anything that needed extra hands got extra hands and was done well. I expected them to be good and they were very good. I have done enough construction myself to understand it. These guys clearly knew a lot. They were very careful and they did high quality work, a very nice installation Even the building inspector commented on the quality of the work, while training a new inspector. I also found them to be very nice and friendly. This was a first rate crew and they all knew enough to back up either the lead gas tech or electrical tech. They worked as a team and did not need supervision.
The bottom line ? Kohler makes a good generator and Elite does a good job installing it. Highly recommended.

We were surprised by Elite's responsiveness. The owner responded promptly to our inquiry, answering all of our questions. He gave us some general tank pricing via email so that we could have a ballpark idea of what to expect which was helpful. Elite does not rent tanks to customers. They will only sell it to you. We realized after some reasearch that this was a good thing because it allows us to buy propane tank from other companies if the price is lower. The one other companiy we found who was willing to even consider the job would only rent us a tank (which would mean we could only get propane from them forever), would not do the stove install, and had a shady, fly-by-night kind of vibe that rubbed us the wrong way. Elite actually seemed like they wanted our business, were very professional, and were willing to do the entire job. Following the email discussions it seemed like we could get propane and we asked them to send someone to do an estimate on site.
The owner (Kelly) came out personally to do our free estimate. He agreed that the only place we could feasibly place the tank was next to our house, right in front of our fence since they could drill through the crawl space and set the line to the kitchen that way. I explained that we would have to get approval from our home owner's association first and that could take a while. He said that was normal and they were used to it. After talking with the owner I felt very comfortable with the whole thing.
During the estimate, the owner and I did discuss propane pricing. I had read online that some companies charge you a low rate the first time and then subsequent fills they jack up the price so I straight out asked him whether they do this too. He told me that the price is the same each time and that they don't do that kind of thing because they want us to use them again and again. He was honest that since we have a smaller tank (not a big sausage thing) we pay a little bit more per fill but their prices are still competitive. We received their quote via email about an hour or two after the estimate. The price was reasonable and we decided to move forward once we got our HOA approval.
It took more than 30 days to get our HOA approval and our quote was technically good for only 30 days so I emailed the company VP and she said that the pricing was the same and to just sign the same contract and fax back along with the payment authorization for the first half of our payment. We did that and then they applied for the permits we needed from the Town of Herndon. The permit was approved about a week before our new gas stove was ready for delivery. At first they wanted to come out and install the tank and then come back and do the stove separately that way we could at least get the project going. We were fine with that. The night before they were going to come we removed the bush that was in the proposed spot for the tank and found an access panel to our crawl space. Code requires the tank to be 3 ft from any opening so we emailed their scheduler to see if this would be an issue. Since this happened so close to the start date and she needed to talk to someone to find out if it was in issue and we had to reschedule the install.
We set it up for them to come back a few days later (luckily they work on columbus day) and do the tank and the stove part on the same day since we were supposed to get our stove that saturday. The stove arrived with a big dent in it and we had to send it back. We told the Elite crew when they arrived Monday morning that we had no stove and they were totally cool about it. They let the scheduler know and she told us to she could send the crew out the day after we got our new stove to make sure we were up and running as soon as possible. The tank and line install took about a day. They arrived at 7:30 and left around 3ish. The 2 man crew seemed very knowledgeable, they were very courteous, and they cleaned up after themselves. They even kept taking off their shoes to come into the house when they had to go into the crawlspace. They had an electrician come at the end to convert the outlet for our new stove since its needs to be a normal outlet and not the big ol' outlet you need for an electric stove.
They came back that Thursday morning as promised to install our new stove. They converted it to LP, put in the anti-tip bracket, and hooked it to the line. The stove conversion took longer than I expected but it all went off without a hitch. They weren't quite done when the town inspector arrived so he waited 10 minutes in my kitchen while they finished up. Everything passed inspection without issue.
All in all, Elite made this all look easy, and I am now cooking with gas! I would hire them over again in a heartbeat and I am very pleased with how things turned out.
"Thank you for the great review. We appreciate the opportunity. The only reply I have is that Elite DOES lease LP tanks. When we spoke I said that most of our clients PREFER to purchase their tanks and we are one of only a few LP providers that will sell tanks but we do offer lease agreements as well for those clients that do not wish to purchase the tank. My apologies for any confusion. Thank you very much for the business."
- build foundation of 4x4's filled with concrete and gravel
- extend (existing) propane piping and bury
- install 14 KW Kohler generator
- install Automatic Transfer Switch
Work began early one day and was completed in about 4 days. Total cost: $12154.
I am very pleased with the installation by Elite.
There is an initial "customer screening process" that the owner employs to ensure that only serious, informed home owners merit an in-home visit. While this can be off-putting to some potential clients, it actually saves the home owner & provider time. It requires the home owner to do some initial research and educate him/herself about how generators work (i.e., what to expect a generator to do), the quality of various brands of generators (all brands of generators are NOT alike!), and the areas of the house to be covered in an outage.
Once I worked through this via a long phone conversation with Elite's owner (which was educational as well), he visited our property. He did an assessment of our needs, explained what different sizes of generators could do in our home, and helped us get to a point where we were able to make a decision regarding size. However, he did not TELL us what we should do. If you are looking for someone to decide FOR you, this is not your guy.
We chose Elite because installing generators is what they do--period. Generators are not a side line, as is the case with many other companies. The owner is a master electrician and "gas man" and they do not subcontract. He personally inspects and assesses your electrical system, gas lines and anything else that involves the installation of a generator, and every part of the job is done by Elite employees. It is because of this that he can ensure the quality of the work that is done (and is ultimately responsible for it).
All of the employees are specialists in their area (electrical or gas, etc.); they conducted themselves in a professional manner and communicated well. They arrived on time, answered questions that arose, and cleaned up before they left.
The administrative staff was especially helpful. We got a call at the end of each work day explaining what had taken place, what the next step was and when it would be performed. This was unexpected and greatly appreciated! It also sets the bar very high for other companies that we may interact with in the future (although for anything regarding our generator, electrical & gas systems we would call Elite). In fact, we are in the process of establishing a maintenance contract with them to make sure the generator is well--and correctly-- maintained.
If you are only concerned about finding a generator for the cheapest price, Elite may not be the best company for you. However, if you are looking for a high quality product that is installed by a high quality company, call Elite--but do your homework first!
"This is the one thing I do not like about Angie's List - people can post anything they want and click "I swear it's true" and it gets posted. The only thing about his posting that is true is that Kevin did slip from a walk board in the attic WHILE CHECKING HIS AC while we were there and nearly fell to his death two stories below causing a hole in the two story foyer ceiling. When Kevin got out of the attic so we could check the bleeding the ONLY question this client asked was "Who is going to fix that hole?" and "We want it fixed now because we have company coming in this weekend." There was not even a hint of concern about his bleeding leg or how else he may have been hurt. Needless to say we brought in scaffolding, additional people and a painter to repair the drywall and paint to match that SAME DAY. Everything else this client is stating is an outright lie. I know my staff spoke to him several times and he consistently confused maintenance and warranty. He was defiant at every turn and simply wanted a free service while we were there to perform a warranty repair. When we told him no, he would have to pay for his maintenance (this is a year after the install was completed) he started saying we were lying and that he paid for the maintenance. We asked that he show us a check or CC receipt for payment (as we know it was not paid for) but at that point he started with how bad of a company we are and then he posted this on Angie's List. I can tell each and every potential client that I have NEVER refused warranty service for any client not having a maintenance agreement. I have and WILL refuse service to those clients that owe Elite money and he was neither. He was simply a client that couldn't get something for free and thought he could make a difference by posting this here."
Since the installation, the generator has worked flawlessly and we never worry about losing power when severe weather is forecasted anymore (our neighborhood frequently loses power even with the slightest of storms). During the June 2012 Derecho, we realized that we inadvertently forgot to have our central AC included in the back up system. I called Elite during the aftermath of the Derecho and they promptly sent one of their technicians to include the circuit.
We have an annual maintenance contract (just renewed for three years) and this includes two visits per year. One thing: the latest Kohler Firmware update has bugs and impacts the scheduled weekly diagnostic/exercise test. This is not an Elite issue but it is annoying when the generator runs its weekly (sometimes it's bi-weekly and on different days) exercise test in the middle of the night :-(
Overall, we highly recommend Elite and have so with our neighbors!
Kelly came out on a Saturday to discuss what we needed after I had researched all the system options they had to offer and reviewed in his professional opinion what he suggested we consider. I thought we were going to need to also upgrade our main service from a 200 amp to a 400 amp service but after Kelly went through the house and looked at all the nameplate data for our major electrical consuming equipment, he was confident that this wouldn't be necessary. Like many older houses, we had too many things on too many piggy-backed breakers, but not really too much load for our existing service. He suggested we just install a new sub-panel so that we could get rid of all the piggy-back breakers.
We expected to be on their install schedule three weeks later but were pleasantly surprised to get a call that another customer on the fence about the same size generator we wanted was back off the fence and we were next in line.
Kelly had explained to us in detail their philosophy on customer service, integrity and communication and they were spot on. The crew, led by Brian, were on time every day, they were we patient with answering questions and they were committed to resecting our property every step of the way. Even replanting a section of liriope they had to remove in order to hand dig their trenches.
Every day we got a detailed explanation of what they had completed, what was next and what we could expect after that. The cleaned up every day and even moved our vehicles (at our request) in order to keep them out of the work area and clean.
On power transfer day Brian worked with some other trades we had at the house and made sure not only were the lights and refrigerators back on, but that the fish tanks were up and doing what they were supposed to be doing.
When their gas pipe testing and inspections took place, they had to wait for Washington Gas to come hang a new meter and turn the gas back on but at 6pm on a Friday they still hadn't shown up. We got a call from Washington Gas (we were out of town) that they came, hung the meter and left at 8pm that Friday but that unless they were called early that Saturday morning, we wouldn't have gas until Monday. I called Brian and asked if there was any way he could go to the house on Saturday and meet them so we would have hot water when we arrived back in town late Saturday. His answer: No Problem.
So after our inspections, Kelly himself came out to make the final connections and start the system. After some last minute programming entries and topping off oil and coolant, the generator fired straight up and we ran a successful full load test.
We are ready for the next storm and Dominion doesn't need to be looking for any calls from us asking when will our power be back on!
