My dear sister who has passed away, aged 33, had an account at this credit union. When we tried to collect the funds from her account after her death we were told that we could get the funds out as soon as they had a death certificate. When asked why they needed the death certificate when we had already brought in her obituary we were told that they needed the death certificate because there was no beneficiary listed on the account. I don't know how an account was opened without having a beneficiary installed on the account. This is REQUIRED for any banking institution I have ever done business with. We brought the death certificate in and we were then told that the funds would be available the following Monday. When we went back on Monday we were told that we wouldn't be able to retrieve any of the money from her account since she had a previous unpaid debt with the credit union. We were baffled by this as my sister was out of debt when she passed, she didn't even have a credit card; she didn't have very much money to her name but she didn't have any debt. The credit union informed us that she and her ex-husband had a repossessed vehicle on the account and they were taking the money for the losses incurred on that vehicle. I forwarded the credit union a copy of my sister's divorce decree signed by a federal judge which legally released her of all liability and interest in that vehicle. They took the money by saying that their contract supersedes any divorce decree. Somehow this credit union failed to take any money from my sister during the time she was alive but as soon as they had the death certificate apparently anything was fair game. I was told by Joseph Boekweg, Vice President of Lending for University Federal Credit Union, that my sister was "just one member of over 80,000 members." Interpret that how you will. This credit union needs a moral compass before doing any more business. Some funds in this account were ORS funds (Child Support Services) funds which they are legally not allowed to touch regardless of any debts owed on any account with them. These were funds for my sister's 2 beautiful daughters who have now been left with nothing.
Description of Work: Took money from my deceased sisters account.

This credit union is run by a bunch of clowns who can't seem to file documents properly. I gave them my homeowners insurance policy when I opened the loan. Then I received a letter demanding that I send them that policy or they would take one out for me. I spent a long time on the phone trying to straighten that out (gave them policy number and phone number of my insurance agent, etc.) A month later I received another threat letter this time specifying that it would soon start to cost me $190/month for the 'fire insurance' policy they were about to take out on my behalf. I went to the online address and uploaded a pdf of my homeowners insurance. Today I called just to make sure they'd gotten it. They hadn't. Somehow my loan has been filed under vehicle instead of home. I had to stay on the phone for ages again and then was informed that they can't even send a confirmation except by snail mail and if I haven't received a letter in about a week I should call back. I will not be calling back except to cancel the d*** loan.
Description of Work: I qualified for a HELOC. They set it up.
