Description of Work: We had Josh do a lot of work at our house, including removing a couple of load bearing walls and building a deck, among other smaller things. Josh's prices were very good, and the work he performed was good. The issues I had were with lack of communication and regularly not showing up when he said he would. I feel like these are stereotypes among contractors, and unfortunately he did nothing to disprove them. At the end of the day though, we were left with a finished product that we like, and to me, that is the most important thing.

Description of Work: I believe I had requested and paid for a 3D design for a deck but all I recieved was a bid and nothing showing me what it would look like. We had a hard time connecting and I felt like he really didn't listen to what I wanted.

Description of Work: Josh had earlier completed a deck and pergola project for me and I rated him highly. He committed to come back and fix a soaker irrigation line which had been rendered inoperational during his demolition of a walkway and he also agreed to install a storm door. Despite touching base in early September and committing to do the work the week of September 20th, I have not heard from him since.

However, he never responded to my first call and I tried calling again a few times and always got the voicemail so I did not want to pester him with more messages. If he was busy with other work, that's great but I should hope he could just acknowledge my message so I can go ahead and find someone else.

Description of Work: He put in a wall for us in our bedroom. Everything was finished on time and top quality. I can't stress the on time thing enough, because we've really had trouble with that with other providers in the past. Our contractor showed up exactly when he said he would and finished the work when he said he would. He also focused on doing the job correctly. He's very experienced and knows what he's doing. He's also very pleasant to work with.

Description of Work: We first contacted Johnston Construction because of their excellent recommendations on Angie's List. Our experience confirmed those reviews! We were timely contacted in response to our request . . . provided a concise but reasonably detailed overview of the work to be included . . . a firm commitment on project costs . . . project initiation and completion dates . . . and assurances of construction dust and debris containment and post-demolition / project completion cleanup. The work contracted for was the removal of a non-bearing plaster and lathe wall between the kitchen and dining room in our 1922 house. The new wall opening incorporated an arched frame and accurately reflects the style and character of the rest of the house. The transformation achieved far exceeds our preliminary expectations! The work completed by Johnston Construction was professionally completed and very reasonably priced. I highly recommend working with this contractor!

Description of Work: Josh is very professional. He answered all the questions I had and we are going to move forward with the remodel as soon as the permit is available. I have many projects for Josh and he said he would be glad to help with any work I need done. I will report again as soon as the work is done.

Description of Work: I feel very fortunate to have found Johnston Construction. After many terrible experiences with other contractors, a lot of expense and in some cases having things done twice - I now only make one call when I have a project, Johnston Construction. I have an old house built in 1917. All houses have issues but mine has some particular challenges due to the fact that it has been remodeled previously and wasn't done properly. This has caused many problems and much expense that could have been avoided if it was just done correctly the first time. Over the past year and a half Johnston Construction has completed several projects for my house. October 2009 - Roof repair, flashing, and masonry work (chimney was falling off onto my neighbors driveway). Repaired drywall inside from the leak. December 2009 - Remove old tile in the kitchen, (which it turns out was attached directly to the sub floor), fixed associated issues in floor from improper previous installation. Installed beautiful Italian porcelain tile in kitchen and dining room. Josh and his crew did the demo and prep and then he brought in one of his expert tile setters for the floor. February 2010 - Electrical. Added additional outlets to living room and bedroom. March 2010 - Removed french doors - framed in wall, drywall, floated the wall. You cannot tell there was ever a door there. Amazing! The walls are lath and plaster and nothing is square in my house. Josh did this work himself. June 2010 - Deck/Railings. Back deck was falling off into back yard. Jacked up deck, properly secured to house, put proper footings under deck (which were missing altogether), stripped and refinished the deck. Built new railings which were falling off. Josh did this work himself. August 2010 - Fence. Built privacy fence between my lot and adjacent house. Josh did this work himself. November 2010 - Outside pipe burst. Replaced all necessary parts and fixed. Josh did this work himself. November 2010 - Toilet broke and water for entire house backed up. Fixed toilet, and rooter shower out to main to clear back up. December 2010 - New kitchen faucet. March 2011 - Tile countertop. Removal of old tile by Josh (again it wasn't applied properly), replaced with new porcelain tile by experienced tile setter.

Description of Work: Bathroom remodel. Our house is approx 70 years old and had a great deal of "do it yourself" updates and repairs over the years. The previous owners used laminated particle board for a tub surround which did not work well and soon there was a serious problem with mold and the lamination was bubbling up. The entire bathroom was quite ugly so we decided on a full remodel. We consulted with Josh Johnson (Johnston Construction) who I had found via a door hanger. After evaluating the bathroom together, we agreed that everything should be pulled out including the walls around the bathtub where the mold problem was. One of the first things I learned about Josh was his strong ethic that things should be done RIGHT, not necessarily the easiest or cheapest way. He impressed me with his knowledge of construction methods. On demolition day, Josh took a big sledge hammer to the tub and completed the demolition in one day. It was amazing to see the layers of old repairs as each was stripped away. When the demo was done, it was clear that the floor would need reinforcement before before the toilet could be mounted and the tile could go in. Also, the piping below the bathroom was crazy and would need to be redone. Josh and the plumbers did an amazing job of squeezing into a very tight, inaccessible area to reinforce the floor and replace the shoddy plumbing. Very impressive! The plumbers also popped in a new extra-deep tub. My wife couldn't wait to try it out! Richard from Lone Peak Electrical came and rewired some outlets and installed a ceiling ventilation fan. He was an older gentleman who clearly had a LOT of experience. I was amazed at how he was able to snake his way through a very tight hole in a closet to access our attic which is knee high in insulation. The wiring and ceiling duct was in before I knew it. Next Josh and his apprentice installed new dry wall and an additional layer of Durock around the tub for a water tight surround. Meanwhile, my wife and I were running around choosing tile and other fixtures. We eventually found a nice Earth tone porcelain tile and an accent from a separate store. We came up with a bit of a fancy tile arrangement with a wainscot and diagonal tiles above an accent strip. Josh subcontracted the tile work through Ryan Pond Tile company. They worked continuously over several days and the end result was amazing! The tile job was really beautiful. Later I noticed a minor issue, but Josh made sure it was corrected and the end result was perfect! I found a sink and ordered a custom vanity and medicine cabinet through Joe Naylor at Sutherlands. I ended up using a modified kitchen cabinet for the medicine cabinet because I wanted to take advantage of a recess into the wall that would allow a much deeper cabinet. Josh brought in Judd Kinney from Kenpro Builders to modify the cabinet, replacing the inner part of the door with a mirror. He did such a great job it was impossible to tell that it had not been built that way in the first place. The end result was perfect. Finally the plumbers returned to install the toilet and other fixtures. We went with a power flush toilet that supposedly never clogs. (so far so good). Josh put in a new door, light fixture and painted the walls. Towel racks and a loilet roll holder were the final pieces.

Description of Work: Replaced a front porch/deck on our older home, acted as general contractor. On time, on budget, used good skilled labor. The job finished is very professional and adds a lot to the value of our home. We would definitely use again, inside or out, or on a much larger project.
