I want to be fair to Gary. He is basically a good person. He obviously knows his business and is very successful at it. Unfortunately in this case we patiently waited for the results to get better but what we ended up getting (for no small sum of money) did not and still does not meet expectations. This resulted in a less than perfect experience. Gary initially was supportive but as the problem lingered, it became our problem and no longer his. Unfortunately this kind of attitude has left a bad taste in my mouth. Gary has given me the give the impression that he has forgotten who the customer is or has decided not to care. I understand that all businesses owners have he prerogative to decide how far they will go to resolve customer issues. Gary made it obvious that he will only go so far. Unfortunately, I can no longer use Gary nor recommend his Company.

The provider's voicemail was full. I used the contact option in Angieslist to email to ask if he could come out to give me an estimate. I got an answer within 2 days asking me to call and quot;asapand quot; to make an appointment. The voicemail was still full. I emailed twice to report the problem to him and ask that he give me a call back but never got a response.

I contacted Higher Ground on 6/6/13 to get an estimate on finishing the landscaping in my front yard. This will be finishing a border on the side of my house approximately 2 ft by 20 ft, as well as two flower beds (the first about 10 ft by 10 ft, the second about 4 ft by 12 ft) that need to be grubbed out, topsoil replaced; have some pavers and edging installed and some plants, weed barrier and mulch put in. I spoke with Gary, and as soon as I told him the size of the area I needed worked on, he told me that he was not willing to and quot;mobilize my crewand quot; for such a small job. Gary was polite enough in turning down my request for an estimate, but I believe that if there is a minimum size of job that this company is willing to bid on, they need to make that clear in their posting on this website.

Response from HIGHER GROUND LANDSCAPING
We pride ourselves on integrity and honest business practices. That said, I was merely giving [member name removed] an honest assessment of what I thought he needed to complete his project in the most affordable way. Hence, the explanation that he consider highering a company that specializes in smaller 'garden projects." I went on to explain to [member name removed] that we are a "Landscape Construction" company specializing in full scale tear-out and installs.

The quailty of the concrete work and grading was excellent, there were some significant delays in getting the fence completed and the final result for the fence was not up to the highest standards. Nonetheless, I would recommend Gary, he is fair and honest, a good communicator and has high quality standards. As with most contractors, especially if yours is a smaller job , make sure you know where you stand in the job queue.
Description of Work: Gary and his team graded a signfiicant portion of my backyard to build a dog run, including a surface and fencing and a new patio under our deck.

Due to the slope of my yard, water from the downspout on my garage was pooling in my garage and causing masonry erosion. Water from the downspout in my backyard was pooling back onto my patio. Both downspouts are near high traffic areas where it wouldn't be practical or attractive to put long above ground extensions on the bottom of the raingutters to send the water farther onto the lawn. Higherground installed a below ground French drain from both of the downspouts to solve the problem. We have since had two substantial rain storms and there hasn't been a drop of water in the garage or on the patio where there used to be deep puddles. When my puppy got excited about all of the digging and dug up part of the drain the day after installation, Gary promptly came back and reconfigured it to make it less attractive to the dog, filled in a couple of other holes created by the dog elsewhere in the yard, and gave me some great tips that have very successfully prevented her digging.
Description of Work: Installed French drain to fix water pooling in garage and on patio from raingutter downspouts.

See my comments from above. I'll use them again for additional work - no question about it.
Description of Work: Gary and his team provided an estimate to rebuild/refubish landscaping planters and walls in my backyard. He gave me a variety of choices and actually recommended a choice that would cost less and look much better that I originally planned for - a choice I fully agree with now that the job is completed. In addition, he had one of his sub-contractors install a new poured concrete sidewalk, and he and his team hardscaped a garden area and built raised planters. They are a hard working team. They paid attention to detail, cleaned up daily, and were punctual and arrived when promised. The job was completed per the estimate and on time. Great to work with.

The HGL owner responded quickly to my request for an estimate, and we scheduled a meeting in the next day or two. He responded with an estimate in a matter of days. I comparied his bid against two others (from Angie's list) and prices were comparable; the only significant difference being cost for site preparation (HGL strongly recommends amending the soil after tear out [others didn't], which added about 2,500 to our bid; I did some research and decided it was worth it). The estimate provided an estimated start date and number of days estimated to complete the job. A deciding factor for us in selecting them is that they work on one job at a time, completing one job before moving to another. Once we provided a signed contract and a 60% deposit, they started as soon as they finished the job before us (a few days later than scheduled due to whether delays on the prior project). All the staff were professional, and worked hard, and the job was well-organized. They cleaned up the job site each day and worked during normal working hours. The only delays were related to weather (lots of those unfortunately) but finished in the number of working days estimated. I made some modifications during the process and they were accomodating. With each modification, Gary submitted a revised estimate. He also emailed every couple of days to let us know status, etc. There were no surprises in the final bill. We are very satisified with the finished product.
Description of Work: Complete landscaping of front and backyards, including clearing and remediation of soil, new sprinkler system (with drip system), installation of hardscape (cedar retaining wall and deck, flagstone patio) and planting beds, and installation of new sod and plantings. They worked off a design that I had (from another designer) but made modifications where necessary or requested.

Very smooth from start to finish. However, if you plan on hiring Higher Ground Landscaping, please book in advance, they are very busy!
Description of Work: We hired Higher Ground Landscaping to build us an outdoor gas fireplace and a large stone patio. They were able to match the existing stone on our house, worked diligently through very adverse weather conditions (snow, rain and bitter cold). Gary and his crew were very effecient and always cleaned the work area up at the end of each day. We were amazed at how detail-oriented they were and always updated us on thier progress as the project moved forward. We had heard about Gary's reputation from others he had worked for in our neighborhood. Thus, the reason we chose his company over 3 others we had estimates from. We plan on completing our entire yard this spring and already have hired Gary and his crew for the project.

I called Gary for the job. We scheduled a time for him to come out. He called me just before our appt. to say that he had a flat and could we reschedule. We did for a couple days later on a Saturday. He arrived on time, was friendly enough, and had great suggestions. He told me he'd put an estimate together. Three weeks later he contacted me to ask if I still wanted the estimate...which I'd already hired to someone else able to get me immediate pricing for the cleanup and prompt estimate for the other work.

Gary was already measuring and brainstorming when I arrived to meet him for an estimate. Our main concern was cleaning up our overgrown yard before the winter, so he proposed doing that part first and then either putting down a weed barrier, or going ahead and planting in the fall so that the plants had a chance to settle in before the heat of next summer. We were so happy with him we decided to go ahead and plant this fall. We are black thumb types, so offloading as much as possible into Gary's hands was a great relief - his choices for placement and types of plants was excellent. It was fun to watch as things changed over the week. Gary was kind enough to do a walkthrough and an education session for us to decrease our ignorance of plants a bit!
Description of Work: Gary and Co. first removed all weeds and overgrown plants from our entire backyard and around our rental unit. He trimmed several trees and cut back overgrowth and hauled it all away. He then cut new areas for planting and prepared or replaced soil where needed. For the second phase he did a design that was in line with our priorities. Top priority was low maintenance to reduce the yardwork load on us and our tenants, second priority was low water usage. Gary's expertise and aesthetic sense turned out to be extraordinary - he carefully chose plants that would either stay out of the way for certain areas of the yard, or others that would grow to provide privacy from neighbors or block unsightly telephone poles or the like. We are extremely happy with what and where he chose to plant and look forward to having him work on the front yard in the future.
