So far he has been on time; he has been personable, and very helpful. He is very professional, very polite and he is just been very responsive. I was in contact with him over the Email. Overall his quote has been good and I choose to go with him for the work.

The restoration was surprising. We debated about the color of the stain, whether we should go with dark espresso, which matched our other furniture, or something lighter. Michael showed us a few options and we decided to go with a walnut. When the piece was delivered the transformation was amazing. The grain of the wood that had been hidden came out and was beautiful. We are very satisfied with his work and would call Ensign Fine Finishing again. He is extremely busy (he was refinishing furniture for one of the LDS Temples) and the process took a little longer than we expected but we were in no hurry and the results were worth the wait.
Description of Work: We have, what I found out from Michael Ensign, is a walnut early 1900's German shrank (wardrobe). We bought it more than 25 years ago and the previous owner used Old English dark scratch cover oil as a weekly cleaning. It looked so terrible we thought about selling it but decided to refinish it instead. Michael not only gave it a new finish, he restored it with new hardware.

Ensign Fine Finishing Inc. is very professional. I felt great confidence in their quote. They did not have the time to do our project until in spring and that is fine with us as we want it done well. We are glad that he was honest with us and he will refinish our table in spring. I would use him again in the future.

The service has been absolutely excellent. He is very knowledgeable and the quality of his work is fantastic. He has been very helpful throughout the whole process. His prices are very reasonable, and he is easy to get along with. He will take one piece of furniture, do work on it, return it, and then take the other piece and do work on that. I appreciate how he keeps in touch and always lets me know what is happening.

Mike picked the desk up from our house to do the project at his shop and then brought it back to us when he was finished. Perfect each time.
Description of Work: I have an antique writing desk I brought home from Germany. The humidity is quite different between Utah and Europe so the finish and glue had broken down quite a bit. Mike totally restored the finish, reworked the drawers, re-keyed the locks and totally fixed the finish. The old desk never looked better!

I am very glad that you are happy with the results. The wood was very damaged by worms and moisture, I was unsure if I could restore it too it's former beauty. The finished piece looked far better than I expected and the repairs he made were virtually undetectable. My daughter-in-law commented that the finish was "like butter." Michael is extremely accommodating, easy to communicate with, and takes great pride in his work. He obviously loves what he does.

It was fantastic, really flawless, from beginning to end. In a no-big-deal way, he immediately showed that he understood what the pieces were, how they would have looked when new, and that we were looking for a way of retaining their historic feel while not just leaving them to deteriorate. When we visited his shop to choose final finishes, that was really helpful; we felt confident we were all talking about the same thing, and learned a lot about possibilities from having him show us samples. When he delivered the finished pieces, we were both truly astonished. We had no idea either piece could have looked so good. They felt like the furniture my wife had known since she was a little girl, just more beautiful, and well cared for. Really, I can't say enough about how great this work was. I'm not sure any craftsman has exceeded our expectations so much. HIGHLY recommended.
Description of Work: Repaired and refinished two small pieces of furniture--made both look MUCH better than we had imagined possible. Both had been in my wife's family for decades, mean a lot to her personally, and were in terrible shape. We had talked for years about having them refinished, but you see so much antique/vintage furniture that is redone in a way that destroys the character--we kept putting it off. But when we found Michael Ensign, through Angie's List, we were willing to give it a shot.

As indicated above, Michael was a pleasure from beginning to end. I found him through Angie's list (and he does give a discount to Angie's list customers). The restoration of the bedroom set was a large project and we were impressed that Michael was able to make the early deadline that we requested. We first contacted him in December and he was able to complete and deliver his work on 2/10/12--just two days before our houseguest was arriving. He kept me informed throughout and wanted me to see the bed as it was nearing completion. He is very creative and constructed an upholstered cushion (sent by him to an outside upholsterer) to fill in the space between the ornate carved headboard of the original full bed and the now-queen-size bed. He also worked with me in selecting the fabric for the cushion. We can only use superlatives to describe the work of Ensign Fine Finishing.
Description of Work: Michael Ensign completely restored my parents' pre-World war II black mahogany ornate bedroom set that now sits in a guest room of our home. The set consisted of a full size bed, two night tables, a dresser, two large framed mirrors and a tall high boy dresser. Some other pieces (chairs, vanity table) had been restored several years ago and no major work was necessary. on these few pieces. Michael's workmanship is superb. The bedroom set was in very poor condition. It has been stored away, not under the best conditions, for about 20 years. Michael also converted the full size bed into a more functional queen size while retaining the beautiful headboard and footboard. He had an associate make the new bed rails for the queen size. Michael did his work in his workshop and returned to us a bedroom set that is now in mint condition. Amazing work! Michael also touched up furniture in our home. He is extremely talented but also, very importantly, quite passionate about his work. He is also a pleasure to work with and is very punctual and responsible in all the work he did for us. We definitely plan to use his services again. We were so delighted to find such an artisan.

We have rather large dogs that chase each other around and they ran into our dining room table leg and split it at the top where the lag bolts are. I took this and an ottoman where one of the legs internal screw structure had become detached from the frame. The leg looks perfect, and is actually stronger since he put deeper lag screws in them and the ottoman is back to normal. Outstanding price and very quick turn around time.

This is the second time we have had the pleasure of working with Michael. My husband's grandma had a Depression Era table that she loved to paint! We were fortunate enough to be given the table and we never once considered taking it anywhere else to be refinished. Michael had two leaves made for the table and we couldn't be happier with the quality of that work as well as the work he's done on the table & chairs. The table is absolutely beautiful now thanks to Michael. There were only 3 chairs remaining when we got the table and when it came time to find more Michael offered to meet us (and did NOT charge us for his time, which is certainly valuable) us at Eurotreasures to help us pick out 4 more dining chairs to complete our set. Micheal helped us with the fabric selection for the chairs as we wanted to keep the table as close to original as possible. Because of his connections Michael was able to get us a great deal on the chairs themselves as well as the fabric. I can't say enough good things about Michael the person and Michael the professional! We would never consider taking our furniture to anyone else. We completely trust his knowledge and expertise. He's even given us some great ideas for displaying the table in our home!

We have an exposed wood loveseat, the joints of which, unbeknownst to us, had been weakened when it was reupholstered several years ago. An exceptionally large person sat on the couch one day and it partially collapsed, splitting the lower piece of the exposed frame on one end. We took it to a shop to be repaired. It seemed fine, but collapsed again a month later when a not-so-heavy person sat on it. I had heard about Angie's List and decided to see if I could find any recommendations there. I did! When I called, Michael, the owner of Ensign Fine Finishing, had just received a very large repair order but very kindly worked me in. He came in early one morning to meet me, looked over the damage and explained what needed to be done. He gave me an estimate of the time needed and the cost, both of which seemed entirely reasonable, but the work was finished in half the time and at less than the estimated cost - and it looks wonderful! We have been using the couch now for several months and the repair is holding strong. I love old furniture and Michael took the time to show me around his shop and talk to me about some of the beautiful pieces he was working on. At my prompting, he also told me how he came to be in the furinture repair business, how he had learned his craft and the various places he had studied. My overall experience was wonderful and I would highly recommend Ensign Fine Finishing to anyone!
Description of Work: To repair our broken loveseat, an upholsterer had to remove just the fabric associated with the damaged area. The broken, exposed piece of the frame was then reglued and a corner brace installed inside to support it. The upholsterer then replaced the fabric. All of the work was orchestrated by Michael, the owner of Ensign Fine Finishing.

Mike called and emailed an estimate. When he arrived to take the furniture to be repaired he stayed true to his estimate. He did not add extra charges like many contractors do in the middle of a job. He recommended stylistic pieces that stayed true to the furniture design. He returned the pieces a week later and helped to place them in their appropriate place. Afterwards, he explained the charges on the final bill. When I compared the final bill to the estimate, all was exactly the same.
Description of Work: Mike was very professional and helped me to decide how i needed to refinish some antique furniture. When the pieces were returned to me they were stunning. The table and chairs not only look new again, the finish was a higher quality then I could have purchased having bought a brand new set. His work is really amazing.

We bought a voucher from Angie's List for Ensign Fine Finishing, Inc. as we had an antique table that we'd been wanting to have refinished and repaired. Michael is a true craftsman and was so helpful through out the entire process. He has a Master's degree in this field and provided us with a lot of information on our table. The finished product was incredible and we've given him 5 antique chairs to refinish for us - can't wait to see the finished product!

Michael is a pure pleasure to work with. He is knowledgeable, and willing to take the time and effort to answer any questions. He worked with my scheduling, and communicated by e-mail and phone as the project was in process. I thought the price was excellent and have him working on a dresser for me now ( with more on the schedule ). I saw the dresser yesterday before stain and finishing to pick out the hardware and am as impressed with it as I was with the dining set. He not only refinishes but restores to a useable and beautiful piece of furniture.
Description of Work: Michael came to look at a dining room set I wanted refinished. He knew my set was a Stickley Bros. antique, which we varified by a name plate on the back of the buffet. The chairs were in pretty bad shape as was the table while the buffet was pretty good. He also spent time looking at other antiques furniture in the home, telling me the period it came from as well as the type and cut of wood it was made out of. It is now the beautiful heirloom that I wanted it to be.

We inherited a 1920s Jacobean Revival Trestle table and chairs that had spent the later parts of its life in an old, leaky garage. Beautiful wood was hidden under multiple layers of paint and stain, all of the veneer was damaged, the chairs were falling apart, and the table's moving parts needed repair. We had started to strip the set but soon realized that even though we had refinished small pieces of furniture before, we were way in over our heads here. We asked Michael to provide us estimates for a variety of levels of refinishing because we were still considering completing the final finish work. After witnessing the respect that Michael held for our set and seeing his attention to detail during this initial session, we decided that all of the work should go to a professional. This was a huge project that took a couple of months to complete, but we also had made it clear that we were in no hurry. Michael kept us informed every step of the way, and we even had the opportunity to see our furniture stripped and repaired before the finish work began. It had already undergone a magical transformation. Now we have a dining set that I could never have imagined. A table that was almost destined for donation or the trash is now a treasure. This is a piece to pass down to our children. Right now it's a piece that we admire multiple times a day, and we even caress it. Michael is an amazing professional with clear attention to detail and an obvious love for his work. We will soon be having him complete our sideboard as well, and we can't wait to see what magic will occur once again.
Description of Work: Extensive repair work, stripping, and refinishing of antique dining table and chair set plus coordinating chairs found in a dumpster. Some parts of the table and all of the trash can chairs required rebuilding. Stripping work took off about 7 layers of paint/finishes. Table and chairs required re-veneering and for some parts to be rebuilt entirely. Dining chairs were also recovered.

I contacted Mr. Ensign after purchasing a used dining set that had good bones but needed a fair amount of touch up work. From the onset, he was very cordial and helpful. He patiently listened to our situation and offered many suggestions as to how we could approach our refinishing project. I ended up receiving an email promotion from Angie's list so I was able to purchase some coupons at a discounted price. Michael met with me at my home to inspect my furniture and promptly provided a repair estimate that was very reasonable. We scheduled a time for the work to be done on site. Michael showed up on time, worked quickly and efficiently and was very pleasant and helpful. Hiring Michael Ensign to do the repairs/touch-up work was a very good experience. I'll unquestionably use Michael again for any furniture repair/refinishing work.

I was afraid that our's was too small a job for a company that does such major repairs and refinishing, it wasn't. Michael came to look at the hutch and said he was sure he could repair it. A week and a half later our hutch is back and looking beautiful. The charge was so small I doubt it covered his gas for the pick up and delivery. He was very easy to work with and the repairs are nearly invisible. If we ever have furniture that needs some attention Michael Ensign is who we'll call. We were very pleased with the speed and quality of his work!

This is the 5th restoration Michael has done for me and his work is impeccable. This piece was a large German mahogany library case. The piece was restored to its original beauty with a hand rubbed piano finish. Other antique pieces include a mirrored oak wash stand, oak sewing machine, a large trunk with leather straps and a small chest handmade by my grandfather from scrap wood that when finished looked like mahogany. Michael is a joy to work with and insists that his customers are completely satisfied before he will accept final payment. He advises about restoration vs rejuvenation so that pieces will retain their value. He is currently working on an oak rolltop desk and we have already had two conversations about the finish and extent of the restoration I desire. He is very honest about the time frame for completion of projects. He has also been a great resource for other vendors in the area such as upholsterers. I don't hesitate to buy antiques that need some work because I am confident that Michael will make them right. I highly recommend his work and as a bonus he is a really nice person.
Description of Work: Restoration of mahogany library case with veneer repair, a large crack across the top and warped glass door.
