They were wonderful and really good. I think that the their price was reasonable for the work that they did. They were incredibly polite, professional and their work was beautiful. They kept me informed how the project will be going and they delivered when they said they would.

Ensign deals with heirlooms everyday and some of them are obviously old and expensive. I wanted to have my mother's circa 1940's Lane waterfall cedar chest refinished. It's not an antique and not really expensive but it has so much sentimental value that I wanted it treated with respect. Ensign did that. I believe Michael understands that sentimentality is a consideration but he also loves beautiful furniture so he treats every piece with respect. They offered to drop it off and pick it up but I did that myself and I am glad I did because it was a real treat to see all the amazing pieces in progress. In the end, I thought the service was wonderful and my mother's cedar chest is beautiful after years of abuse. I thought the price was very reasonable, too but most importantly, my mother cried when she saw it and you can't really put a price on that, can you?
Description of Work: Last year, I had Michael refinish my mother's cedar chest. He finished sanding (I had begun the process, sorta), refinished the chest and put a new lock on it.

Ensign and company did a beautiful job of stripping, refinishing and re-upholstering our dining table and chairs. They picked up the project from our house to do the work in thier shop and delivered to us in as short of time as possible. Mike actually went well beyond our expectations. It actually looked better than I imagined it would look. Thank you Ensign!

I found Michael Ensign through Angie?s list when I was looking for someone to work on a Vertiko cabinet which badly needed refurbishing. I brought it to the US from Germany where it had belonged to my grandparents who had purchased it when they got married in the early 1900s. When Michael came to our home to look at it he got very excited and said he would be honored to refinish it. He also said that he specializes is antiques and that he is often called on to refinish antique furniture and carvings in Utah?s old homes, churches and temples. When Michael and a colleague picked up the Vertiko to take it to the shop, I was immediately impressed by the care with which they handled it. I knew it would be in good hands and that there was no reason to worry. When it was refurbished and returned to our home, I was amazed at how good it looked. He had obviously taken a great deal of time and care to do the work and it now has just the right color and sheen and had been refurbished both inside and out. The leg that had come loose had been reattached and the Vertiko now stands firm. It also has a new lock and key that looks like the original, which no longer worked. I couldn?t be more pleased with Michael work and I can?t imagine that there is anyone in Salt Lake City better qualified as a refinisher than him. He is passionate about old furniture and takes care of it like it is his own. I have received many compliments from visitors about how good the Vertiko looks. Mr. Ensign is not only a talented refinisher, but an extremely pleasant person to work with. I would highly recommend him for any furniture refurbishing job.
Description of Work: Mr. Ensign refurbished an antique German Vertiko cabinet. Work included both exterior and interior refinishing, repairs, reattachment of a leg that had come off and replacement of an antique lock and key.

I called Ensign Fine Furnishings about re-gluing some dining room chairs I bought second-hand. The chairs were from the 1960s, and had been stored where they were exposed to heat and moisture at some time. The glue in some joints had given way; one had an arm broken off (wood cracked) and the other had wobbly legs and a loose piece across the top of the back. Mike came out and looked at them for a free estimate. I let him know I just wanted the chairs to look good and be usable for a few years, but did not want a full restoration. Mike estimated it would cost about $45 to fix these two problems. That was lower than I expected, and his demeanor and his Angies List ratings let me know he would give good service, so I agreed. I also wanted the chair seats reupholstered in a fabric I had already purchased. The foam padding needed to be replaced, too. Mike recommended someone for that job, and offered to take the seats and the fabric to his recommended person for an estimate. I accepted. Mike took the two broken chairs plus the fabric and the six chair seats that needed reupholstering. His colleague called me within a few days for an upholstery estimate, which I accepted. Within two weeks (maybe less?), my chairs were returned. Mike said the repairs he had done on the chairs took so little time and materials that he did not charge me for them! That was nice. The chairs looked good and I gave him the upholstery money and he left. Upon closer inspection after Mike left, I realized that the chair with the loose top piece was still loose! So I am not certain Mike did anything to that; the legs of the chair seemed less wobbly, so maybe he fixed that and just forgot about the top piece. I ended up just using wood glue on it and it is fine now. Unfortunately, the repair to the broken arm did not last. As soon as it got bumped when someone sat in it, the arm broke off again in the same place. I guess old dry wood will do that. I have not decided what to do about that yet. I'm kind of embarrassed to ask him to fix it again, since he didn't even charge me the first time! I wish there were an A- rating on Angies List-- I don't think Mike deserves a B. I mean, he didn't even charge me anything, even though he had spent at least a couple of hours in travel time and coordinating the upholstery job! But I was disappointed the repaired arm did not last, and that he seemed to have forgotten to repair the chair top. The upholsterer he recommended did a wonderful job; the price for that service was expensive, but apparently in the ballpark based on other quotes I had received. Mike also gave me an estimate to restore a mission-style rocker which has a lot of sentimental value. I have not decided whether to have that done yet, but I would trust Mike to do it well, based on his professionalism, responsiveness, and the otherwise rave reviews he has on Angies List.
Description of Work: Free estimates, repair/re-glue two broken dining room chairs, recommended an upholsterer he works with often.

Overall, I can't give Michael enough praise - he is an extremely talented craftsman and was a pleasure to work with over the many projects he completed for us over the past year (all listed above). He is punctual, professional, flexible, dependable and highly knowledgable about his craft (wood, furniture, antiques, styles, colors, etc.). He has a great eye for seeing an item's potential, and will offer an honest opinion if you ask whether it's worth paying for refinishing. Several of the pieces I had him do had been taking up space in my garage for some time as future projects that I never got to, and my spouse, parents and friends all chided me for holding onto "junk". I held fast to my thoughts that these items had potential, and Michael agreed. At first I wasn't sure if he was just agreeing so that I wouldn't feel like an idiot for having asked if my "junk" could be made beautiful - but I quickly learned that he really meant it. When he has come to my home to drop off the finished pieces, my jaw has dropped again and again! As a bonus, my naysayer family and friends have also been incredibly impressed by the stunning transformations. My only regret is that I am moving from Utah and will no longer have Michael and his incredible talents just down the street!
Description of Work: Short answer: Multiple pieces of "junk" have been transformed into gorgeous, eye-catching beauties! Long answer: Michael and his colleagues refinished, and as noted, repaired/refurbished multiple items: -Antique rocking chair that was destined for a landfill with its many scratches, blackened lacquer (from a coal-heated home, Michael told me), and springs and fabric shreds where a seat used to be. Michael stripped and refinished the beautiful quarter-sawn oak, and his upholstery colleague added a gorgeous period-appropriate leather seat, including hand-tied springs to give a little bounce when you sit on it, brass nails along the edges, etc. I was shocked to hear that it's probably now worth considerably more than I paid for all the work that was done to make it look so stunning! -Antique 1930s radio with many scratches. Michael refinished it and his radio colleague refurbished so it now looks brand-new, works great, and isn't a fire hazard! -Antique desk with scratched, dark veneer, purchased at Goodwill in the 1960s, stripped and refinished and looks incredible now -Antique chair full of nicks and layers of paint, stripped and refinished to match the desk -Vintage cedar chest with awful 1960s thick stain that hardly showed the wood grain below, stripped and refinished and lovely now

I have used him several times and he is fantastic. I brought a mantle in from Boston and he repaired it to perfection; including all the carvings. He then finished and stained it to match my dining room table. That's seriously good stuff. He is a perfectionist and I have recommended him, without hesitation, numerous times. He was very much on time and was punctual. He filled me in about what was going on and was even able to locate and cut old fashioned church keys for the vintage doors. He has a special machine that he soaks the doors in so he is able to pull all the finish off; they are not exposed to lead paint or anything. He provides quality service. I have had other stuff done with him where he was more responsive. But, he is a very busy guy so he tells me in advance how long each job is going to take and he calls me if there are any problems. The job is done when he says it is going to be done.

We are new to SLC & needed to find someone to repair 2 pieces of furniture that were damaged in the move. We also had 3 side tables that we wanted refinished. We turned to Angie's List for help & chose Ensign Fine Finishing Inc because of the numerous positive reviews regarding their services. We couldn't be happier with our choice - the repaired & refinished pieces are perfect! Michael Ensign was very easy to work with. He responded promptly to our inquiry, completed the work in a timely fashion & gave us exactly what we were hoping for at a price that is almost too good to be true. He is a knowledgeable, skilled, artistic craftsman - thank you to Angie's List for bringing us together!!!

My parents worked with Michael on this.
Description of Work: My parents saved the high chair that I used when I was a baby. It is the same chair my father used, and the same chair his father used. Our little girl is now sitting in the chair as the fourth generation in that chair.

We were so pleased with the quality of the work that we have continued to hire Mike Ensign to repair and refinsh multiple pieces of furniture. He as since fixed our six kitchen chairs, refinished a dresser, repaired and refinished a butcher block, and finished a custom table top we had made.We specifically requested the table top unfinished because I wanted Mike to finish it. He finished it to match a set of bar stools we already owned perfectly. He has continuously been accomodating to our schedule for pick ups and delivery and very reasonably priced. We highly recommend Ensign Fine Finishing, Inc.

As a girl, my wife learned how to play the piano on her mother's hand-crafted, late 1800's, mahogany upright grand piano. Her mother died when she was 13 years old, and the piano has had some emotional significance. In the past 120 years, however, the piano has been handled by children, the finish had begun to crack and peal, the keys were all chipped, and the piano was in rough condition. We considered the cost to refurbish the instrument, but as we evaluated the sentiment, we felt it might be worth the financial cost to have the piano entirely refinished. Michael came to our home, evaluated the piano, arranged for piano movers to pick it up and take it to his shop. He meticulously refinished the ebony, he removed the ivory and resurfaced each key. He stripped the piano to its most basic parts and refinished and refurbished every piece of mahogany. He had the pedals polished, the interior fully evaluated, and the instrument reassembled. It looks like new. He had the piano delivered to our home and had it tuned. We could not have been more pleased with the look, the sound, or the sentiment. The piano will be a cherished heirloom for the remanded of our lives.

I took the table bottom and the chairs to Ensign and explained what I needed done. They said that they could do it without any problem and gave me an estimate. I had purchased a coupon through Angies list and I used that and paid more in addition to the coupon. After the pieces were delivered back to me, they looked perfect. However, one of the ladder-back chairs had needed a new rung that had to be turned and then finished. Shortly after receiving the chairs back my little five year old grandson stood on the chair and the rung broke. I called Ensign and they gladly came back and took the chair and repaired it at no additional cost to me. Since I have grandchildren in my home often and also two large dogs, I have decided to put the table and chairs away for the time being until I don't have large dogs and little children playing near them. The table and chairs were made by my husband years ago and are really a family treasure at this point so I will try to preserve their good condition for now.

Michael Ensign has refinished several pieces of furniture in my home and done a suburb job. He shows up on time, is extremely professional and provided me great help in deciding on finishes. After he delivered the items back to my home he gave me great instructions on how to clean and care for my newly refinished items ( no Pledge!). This guy knows his stuff, I am delighted with how things turned out.
Description of Work: I have had 4 chairs and my dinning room table finished by Ensign. They picked up my dinning room table and took it to their workshop and it was finished on time and on budget. I delivered the chairs to them because it was an easy task. The chairs were 2 separate orders.

Michael Ensign is extremely professional and competent. He knows wood working backwards and forward. We brought in a rocking chair we have had for several generations in our family. He pin pointed the year the rocker was built. After a thorough examination of the rocker Michael gave us his evaluation. The price to restore the chair completely was beyond our budget. But Michael still put a new finish on the chair and gave us advice about how to care for the rocker. Then he charged us nothing. We were very pleased. When we have something else made of wood we want worked on, there will be no question where we will go!!

We took advantage of an Angie's List promotion and purchased the service deal through them. We weren't sure how it would work since it was our first time using an Angie's List promotion. Michael Ensign is both professional and personable. He refinished a coffee table; removing a very bad finish and it turned out lovely. He came recently to give estimates on two other pieces of furniture and last week he picked up a barleytwist gate-leg table to refinish. Again, he was timely in his estimate and then picking up of the piece of furniture. We look forward to seeing his work on this piece as the finish will be entirely different than the first. Thank you, Angie's List for making us acquainted with this fine refinisher.
