Description of Work: I contacted Elegant Hardwood Floors to come quote refinishing the 80 year old oak floors in a home I am remodeling, and also to quote extending the floor throughout other rooms of the house. Jennifer was quick to set up an appointment to quote the flooring and showed up to the minute of our appointment! After receiving quotes from other local companies who either were really late, or didn't show at all and were very non-communicative -Â Jennifer was a breath of fresh air! She was so throrough in looking at our current floors and educating us in options and what would be involved in the restoration. Ultimately, there was a lot more work needed than we were expecting, so we decided to put off the project for now -Â BUT the experience with Jennifer was great. We really appreciated how up front she was about what the project would involve and things we hadn't even considered. Once we save up some money, we would definitely go back to Jennifer to do the project. She had a very professional vibe, and knew her stuff. We'll be back once our budget allows. | |Thanks for your time Jennifer and being so timely and transparent in the quoting process.

Description of Work: remodeled kitchen with existing hardwood floor. We moved a doorway and a built in pantry, so the hardwood had to be patched and repaired. They also refinished the floor and did a wonderful job. You can't tell where the new wood is!! Thanks for a great job, Rick and Jennifer!

This is a project I was pretty nervous about and had been considering for nearly a year. We had many estimates from other companies but Robert stood out for his knowledge, professionalism and clear pricing. He was transparent about the pricing (which was very close to most other bids), whereas others gave me a lump sum bid. Robert was more detailed in his assessment and it felt much more like a consultation than a bid. He suggested various options and ideas that we had not thought of before, which I really appreciated. We had been told by other companies that the ability to make sure the old and new hardwood floors matched was a little tricky. One guy told us it wasn't possible, another told us it should be okay but there is a risk. Robert seemed completely confident and told us there would be no issue. Once the project began, Robert set very clear timelines and was on-time for every appointment. They delivered the new wood a week early to allow it to acclimate and came the day before to remove the existing carpet and baseboards. Once the project started, Robert came over with the gentleman that would be performing the install and refinishing. He was fantastic - again showing up as scheduled everyday and completely cleaning up each night. We changed our minds about which finish we wanted to use at the beginning of the project and Robert was completely willing to make the change with not fuss. They were also wonderful about wrapping everything in plastic that we did not want exposed to the dust (without our asking) such as the counter tops in the kitchen, cabinets and the opening to our basement. Theinstaller was an artist and very detailed about each step of the project. When I would ask about something here or there, he was attentive and made sure I was satisfied with the result. Once the finishing was complete, Jennifer came back to cut and install our baseboards. She was also fantastic - great work, totally thorough and cleaned up completely. Finally, Robert came out to take a look at the finished result and was very helpful in guiding us on how to best care for the floors going forward and making sure they were protected (especially from the painters who started working a few days later). The finished result looks beautiful and as Robert promised, you cannot tell the old from the new. We are totally satisfied and would highly recommend them to anyone who needs refinishing or new hardwood floors.

They had to put in 3 staircases, because I have a split staircase from the upstairs to the downstairs. I have had them out four separate occassions, so I think they do excelptional work. I usually request Archie. He is always happy, and super, super neat, you would think that he lived here. As I have said, Jennifer comes out and does the measurements, and she has a very good design eye. She also does blinds and shutters. She is really good with working to see that you have the right type of wood and the right stain. They are just really good people to work with. They are honest, throughout the whole project, they are in touch with you. They are there throughout everything.

Description of Work: Robert refinished our hardwood flooring, and he did a beautiful job! It was a night and day difference. He also traveled a reasonable distance to get to our house and still gave us a great price. In fact, I tipped him a little extra for his troubles. Robert showed up on time and was very friendly and professional. He gave me a form with the detailed estimates. When I requested seeing an actual sample of the wood and stain, he managed to arrange it in the same day at my convenience, which was great. Even though his estimate is higher than another company, we decided to go with them because of the professionalism. After signing the contract with him, they performed the job around our schedule, which made our life quite convinient as well. We overall love the new look of our living space. We think the quality is excellent except for a single wood panel in the formal dining that is sticking out from the surface a little (maybe 1mm), but they garanteed that they would fix it if it gets worse (which most likely would not), and the problem might go away over time. They answered our other questions related to maintenance well. Overall we would recommend this company to my friends.

Overall, very pleased with the experience. The price was very good compared to other estimates and Robert and Jennifer were punctual in providing the estimate and reviewing wood and pricing options (as well as measuring the area and taking out the old floor). They were able to get me a very good price for the flooring I chose and were never pushy with me - I truly enjoyed meeting them. The only complaint was the timeframe to complete (a few days late). Specifically, their supplier cut the floor order too tight and a small amount of additional flooring had to be sent after the fact (from Colorado I believe) which delayed the completion by a few days (although it did not impact me because I was out of town).

A bit of confustion in meeting for the estimate, but a minor thing. Otherwise, they arrived on time, stuck to their estimate, and did a great job. I had them do the work when out of town for a week, and that went well. They were friendly and easy to work with during this smooth job. I have no complaints.

A week prior to the scheduled start date, they came and did the initial tear out. They put up plastic to close off areas to keep dust from getting on furniture, etc. They were able to start earlier than planned to install the new sub-floor and lay base-line. The following week, as scheduled, their installer, Matt, arrived on time and completed the hardwood installation in approx. a day and a half. On the third day, they sanded the entryway, and prepped for and stained the entire area. Day 4, they returned and put on the first top coat. Day 5 put on the 2nd top coat. Called Robert to check on them tacking down the carpet at the doorways affected. He had his carpet person come the following Tuesday to finish. Overall, my wife and I are very happy about the finished hardwood floors. We did notice that they missed puttying a couple of nail holes. Robert indicated that he will stop by and fix them. At this writing he hasn't done so, but I'm sure he will take care of this soon. They were very professional , came on time, were hardworking and cleaned up their mess. We've had hardwood done in the past by other companies. I was impressed how this company (Elegant Hardwood Floors) kept the dust and debris to a minimum. Although nothing is perfect, they were pretty close and we plan to use them in the future.

Decent response time to initial phone call and coming to provide quote. Seemingly knowledgeable regarding our specific needs (extra coats on floor due to wear & tear from dogs). Initial plan was to start on a Monday afternoon, finish Wednesday afternoon. The schedule meant the stinky part of the process that would keep us out of the house wouldn't be scheduled at the end of the day, therefore we should be able to stay in the house through the whole process. When I called Sunday night to confirm the arrival time Monday, I was told they weren't starting until early Tuesday morning, which meant I had to scramble to cover work obligations to be there and meet the workers Tuesday, after arranging my schedule so that I would be there Monday afternoon. When I returned home Tuesday afternoon, the fumes were so bad I was having difficulty breathing within 10 minutes. We had to stay in a hotel, with dogs, at an extra expense of $100. When I called to ask about this, the husband told me "the fumes aren't that bad". Later his wife told me the fumes were so bad, she used her full respirator. The work was finished Thursday morning, a day late, since they started a day late. They told us they would buff the floor out before the final coat. Either they didn't do this, or they did it badly. You could see faint circles in the finish from the circular sander. You also can see dark splotches on the floor (it's a light golden finish) that are perhaps burn marks from the sander? I don't know. Additionally, 3 months later, the finish is not wearing well. There are cracks between boards as the floor has expanded/contracted through the winter. There are dried puddles of finish under the feet of the refrigerator, which he told me NOT to move, despite my wishes to do so. I would never use this company again. They seemed pleasant up front, but the progression of the job was not what he indicated. They started a day late, finished a day late, and because of that half day delay, they hadn't gotten a sealer on the floor at the end of the first day, so we weren't able to stay in the home. They indicated the fumes wouldn't be bad, and the fumes were terrible. He never communicated his delayed timetable, it was my phone call to him that revealed they would be starting late. Finally, the job wasn't that great. Two thumbs down to these people. In response to owner feedback: We did appreciate you fit us into the holiday schedule and finished the job before our visitors arrived. However, that doesn't change the timing of the job which is what caused us to be exposed to the toxic fumes. You were supposed to start early Monday, in order sand then apply sealer on the floor before we got home, so we could stay in the home that night. Instead, you started Monday afternoon so the floor was only sanded and not yet sealed before we got home. And more, you didn't call to tell us of the schedule change. This also caused a work conflict as we scheduled our day to be available to let you in the house to start the job. Additionally, if we were coming home to toxic fumes, which you had been advised in advance was a concern because of my asthma and the dogs, you should have called us before we arrived home to forewarn us that the fumes were bad. Of course, you couldn't know what finish was under there. You could however, have communicated it to us once it was evident how bad the fumes were. So far, two phone calls by you, could have alleviated some of these issues. With regard to moving the refrigerator, I wanted to move it. You talked me out of doing so. With reference to the quality of the job, it looked great when I came home, but I was viewing it from the next room because the floor was still wet! It wasn't until the floor dried enough to see the detail closely that the swirl marks and the burn/shadow marks were visible. Your explanation of those marks on the floor doesn't explain why they weren't there before the refinish work occurred. Lastly, I didn't ask you halfway through the job for a 3rd coat. I asked for that as part of the job, because we have multiple dogs and I was concerned about the scratches on the floor. If you pull out your estimate, you'll see the 3rd coat was part of your original estimate.

Response from Elegant Hardwood Floors
Member, thank you for your feedback. When you awarded us your job, we informed you that we were fitting your job into a tight pre-holiday schedule and that we would be starting your job on Monday or Tuesday and that the job would take 3 days to complete once started. We are sorry that you contacted us before we were able to contact you to finalize the schedule and that this resulted in an inconvenience with your work schedule. In regards to the fumes, this resulted from what we sanded off, not what we applied. As hardwood floor professionals, we can take an educated guess as to what finish is existing on a hardwood floor but oftentimes do not know for sure until we sand off the finish (different finishes give off different smells when sanded). In your case, the finish that was on your existing hardwood floor was an acid-cured finish, which is toxic. Given that we did not have record of what finish had been applied to your floor the last time it was sanded, and we thought the existing finish was a polyurethane, this is not something we could have prepared you for. If it is any consolation, acid-cured finish is more difficult to sand off and cost us more in sanding papers to remove. As far as the quality of our refinish, I would like to start with the cracks in the floor. Cracks between the boards of a hardwood floor are a result of an unstable environment (i.e., unfinished basement or uninsulated crawl space below the hardwood floors; fluctuations in humidity and temperature as a result of the seasons, exposure to the elements when doors are opened, etc.), not the quality of our work. In most cases, splits between the boards are a result of the changing seasons – as the heater runs through the winter it dries the moisture out of the wood causing it to shrink and the cracks to appear. The moisture is returned to the wood as the air conditioner runs through the summer and the cracks fill back in. The only way to prevent this from happening is to control the temperature and moisture in the whole house year round. Refinishing the floor does not prevent the splits from occurring. Without looking at the floor with you to verify what splotches you are referring to, I believe that you are seeing sticker marks, which are imperfections in the wood that go across the grain and look unnatural. I assure you that there are no burn marks in your floor. Oftentimes when refinishing a floor, characteristics of the wood, some good, some not so good, become more evident. Sticker marks are in the wood and cannot be sanded out. If there are swirl marks in the finish or puddles of finish by the by the refrigerator, we are sorry and we are willing to fix these problems. In the case of refinishes like yours where the homeowner is not changing the color of the floor (i.e., stain), we always leave it up to the homeowners as to whether they want to move the refrigerator or not. In most cases they do not move the refrigerator since deep scratches resulting from moving the refrigerator back into place is the #1 reason why we are back in a home immediately after finishing the floor. Member, what we are trying to understand at this point is why, if you were so unsatisfied with our responsiveness, professionalism, and quality, did you ask us in the middle of the job to do the optional third coat of finish (which was still completed in the original 3 day time frame), say you were happy with how the floors turned out at the completion of the job, or pay us when there may have been a couple items to address? We tell our clients all the time that we are not perfect and that refinishing floors is not an exact science, but we work hard to make our clients happy. We are only as good as our next referral and unfortunately we have not earned that from you. If there are problems with our finish work we are willing to fix them. We just wish that you had contacted us directly to address your questions and concerns rather than leaving such a negative public mark on our company. Robert and Jennifer Shamy, Owners

Just a great experience. I am in the middle of renovating a 1928 duplex in Sugarhouse. I've gotten many bids and worked with many companies from plumbing and carpentry through painting and floors. By far Elegant Hardwood Floors has been the easiest to work with. Begining with the basics, they show up on time and clean up everyday after work. They come and sand part of your floor and put eight stains on the sample to show you what the stain will look like on your particular wood. Robert told me what it would cost to do the job and he also explained what would be cost effective, saving me time and money. They were by far the least expensive hardwood floor refinishers to bid on my job. Will was the refinisher and was the most professional person to work in my duplex over the last six months. Always cleaning up after a days work and letting us know when it would be best to vacate the premises. Their equipment vaccums up all of the wood dust as it's created saving me any worries. My job ended up taking twice as long as estimated due to the old finish unexpectedly gumming up the equipment so he came in the mornings, evenings and on the weekends to get the job done. All of this and they didn't try to get any more money for their extra effort. The results are really spectacular. Will is a true craftsman and I couldn't be any happier with the results.

I obtained three bids and Elegant came in the lowest for the same type of service, which was to refinish my hardwood floors (about 750 square feet) and his price was 2.75 per square foot. He did the usual and customary top coat plus two coats on top (three total) and it looks really nice. He was able to start it within four days of my getting the bid, and it was finished in about four or five days. It looks SO much better, I think he did a really good job.
Description of Work: Refinish of 750 square feet of hardwood floor (my home is one of those 1940 Sugarhouse bungalows). Sanded down, natural finish, with two top coats. Looks awesome. Our floors had been used by tenants for five years prior and they had been hammered -- now they look brand new.

This is my second experience with EHF and both went very well. On this job, I asked for an estimate and was given a fair price. I hired them to do the work while I was out of town starting on a Monday at noon and returning Friday afternoon. They arrived on time Monday morning so I was able to make sure everything was ready to go. I returned Friday and the floors were still wet from the last application (which they had told me would likely be the case). It was dry by the late evening (possibly sooner but why push it). My floor look excellent now. It went exactly as it should have. No complaints!

I met with Robert and he arrived on time. We discussed a couple of options. His price was comparable, but slightly less than other estimates. We scheduled the work. He and his employee showed on time at the start of the job. Robert described the work to be done to his worker. The schedule was a half day for the initial sanding, and then coats of finish applied over the next 3 days, and then the molding. The young man doing the work was able to finish a day early. He was polite and worked hard, but did leave stuff around my yard and in the home. Bigger equipment was left to block the room off I suppose, but there were some buckets, etc. left around outside. Otherwise, he was clean and kept dust to a minimum. Robert came by the following week to check the work and collect the balance. He discussed suggestions for protecting the floor. I had no trouble getting along with either of them.

If you go with this company make sure you only use HIS pricing. I don't suggest making any changes to his price. And make sure the paper work is what you think it is. Read costs closely!
Description of Work: Talked to Robert & met with him. He knew I was getting other pricing & asked me to let him know if he was close to the other prices. Robert said he would like to get the job & if he was a few hundred dollars off to let him know. So I did. He was about $300.00 higher than our next price (I was only pricing with companies that had good reports & recommendations). I told Robert the price difference he want to match the price so I told him we would give him the job then. When it came time to sign paper work he started to increase the price. Robert accused me of ''nickel & diming'' him and ''tripping over dollars to save pennys''. HE asked me for the opportunity to do the job & told me I was not the kind of person he wanted to do business with. After the increases he began adding WE were not comfortable with him. I had told him we would be going with someone else. We have seen work by the company we will use, family has used them, and rated high on Angie's list as well.

Robert, the contractor was on time, as was his crew when the work began. He got me scheduled quickly and the work was actually finished ahead of schedule. The quality was as expected and the cost matched appraisal.
Description of Work: Installed hardwood floor in living room, approximately 285 sq ft. Sanded and finished.
