Tyler and Travis at Chimera Construction are great. We chose them to do the work for our remodel which included a complete renovation of the kitchen and master bathroom, replacing all the flooring in the house, repainting the entire interior, ripping out a very outdated wet bar, and updating our fireplaces. They are very easy to communicate and work with. They really go the extra mile. The first weekend in October, we discovered a leak in our basement that we thought might have been related to taking out the wet bar, and they were there within an hour even though it was a Saturday. The leak ended up being completely unrelated to any of the work Chimera did for us, but they still took care of everything in a timely and professional manner. I would definitely recommend them to others for any remodeling needs.

overall, it went pretty well. it was a big project and we continued to add more things to it. pros: - travis was always professional and was always receptive to feedback on the work - with some exceptions, the work was completed at a reasonable level of quality. some exceptional, some poor, but primarily good quality. - travis was always accommodating to change orders - travis was sincerely interested making sure we were happy with the results and was always open to fix things to - the price of the work seemed reasonable cons: - travis sometimes had a difficult time managing his sub-contractors - travis was often over aggressive on his estimates to complete work, and frequently missed deadlines - during the year long project there were long stretches (weeks) of time when little or no work was done - the administrative management of the project turned out okay, but was not one of chimera's strong points the biggest positive was that we were generally happy with travis and the work completed. the biggest negative was that it took significantly longer than estimated and deadlines were frequently not met.
Description of Work: general contractor for construction of addition and major re-landscape. oversaw construction of about 1,000 sqft addition, swimming pool, hardscape, pond, sprinkling system, fence, sod, heated driveway, water slide and a lot of other things.

Great: Tyler from Chimera called me back within a day of me leaving a message and arranged to come out for an estimate within a few days. Was on time for the appointment. Appreciated him making drive from Salt Lake to Ogden. Not so great: I gave him description of what I wanted done. We wanted this done as cost effective as possible due to fact that we are in over our head with bills and need a simple solution. He stated, "if you want it done right and to look good, you are looking at around 10K", "we don't do things half way, if its going to have our name on it, it's going to look good" (understandable but I just want a simple solution, not everything has to be a work of art). I kept getting the feeling that he felt as if I was wasting him time because I didn't want to pay such a high price. He said at one point prior to giving me his on the spot estimate, "we can go back and forth or you can just tell me how much you are looking to spend". Once I said $3-5,000 he seemed to be not interested in the job. He took pictures of the house and said that he would get an estimate back to me within 3 days. That was about 6 weeks ago and I have yet to hear from him. Poor: I have left him 2 voicemails and sent 2 emails in last month requesting the estimate without any response. No estimate was ever provided. I had 2 other people come out to give estimates and they were about $7,000 lower than his "on the site best guess". After waiting 2 weeks, we ultimately we went with another company who did the work in less time, less money and provided function and is aesthetically appealing.

We choose Chimera to remodel our master bathroom after getting several bids. Their price was similar to the other bids but we liked the design ideas better and also liked a previous project which they showed us. The project started well with subcontractors arriving when scheduled and doing the agreed upon work. Things broke down some when we were on the final details and what was promised to be a 3 week job turned into a 6-7 week job. We had problems getting a new window to work properly and an employee who did some carpentry work did it poorly and Tyler, from Chimera, had to come and redo it. The final bill was not calculated properly but when I pointed out the problems, Tyler readily corrected the math. We are pleased with the final product but found the drawn out process of getting things finished to be frustrating. Chimera appears to be a popular company and they were busy with other projects.

Tyler and Travis make a great team. They work well together, and they are both committed to growing their business one satisfied customer at a time. They also happen to be really nice, down to earth people. When we first contacted chimera, we had a very rough idea of what we wanted in the basement. We wanted to turn a small 3/4 bath into a master bath and consolidate old hvac in a utility room to make room for a master closet. They were patient with us as we honed in on what we wanted, but they were not particularly helpful from a design perspective. They told us that there was not enough space to accommodate both a bath and closet and presented us a plan for just a bath remodel. After playing with the floor plan, I came up with a design that would give us what we wanted, and the plan worked out just as we expected. The subcontractors that work with chimera are extremely competent and trustworthy. They show up and get the work done. They are respectful, and when any issues did arise, Tyler worked with them to rectify. They really have a slew of great subcontractors to call upon, and I think this is their greatest asset. Tyler did much of the work himself, including the framing and tile work, and we were very impressed with the work he did. He does not cut corners or do anything "good enough." This is part of the reason that chimera is not the cheapest bid you'll receive. For example, when we tore down an existing wall, we discovered that some previous remodel clearly left a load bearing wall with some damage that could compromise the structural integrity of the space, and rather than ignore it and just breeze through the job, Tyler brought in an engineer to take a look and then completely rebuilt the wall. He discussed this with us before proceeding, and it did incur an additional cost. In my opinion, the only draw-back of working with chimera is that their services are in such demand (With good reason) that they take on multiple projects/ clients at the same time. This means that they are not ever-present on any one job, and its when they're not on site that mistakes get made. My husband and i both work during the day, and were not always aware of what was being done on what day, so at the end of the day we would survey what had been done. For example, the electrician came by one day, and when he left we found that the outlets and lighting had been wired and roughed in. The outlets and light switches were awkwardly placed, and the placement for the sconces were all wrong, but we had never been asked or consulted with about these placement details. When we called Tyler, he came by and agreed that placement was awkward. Because the drywall was already in place, to make changes would require drywall repair and additional cost to rectify. We had to move the sconces, but we still have unsightly covers where the sconces were previously roughed in because we would otherwise have to remove a whole wall of drywall. The outlets could not be moved without a great additional cost, so we live with the less than ideal electrical layout. Moving the sconces did incur additional cost for electrical and drywall repair/paint, which Tyler agreed to split with us. While noble, this mishap would not have occurred in the first place if there had been better communication. In the end, the space looks great, and other than some minor snafus, we are very satisfied. In fact, we are currently talking with chimera about taking on some additional work for us. I would definitely recommend this team, but constant communication is key.
Description of Work: Work included a complete master bath remodel, moving a wall, updating basement hvac. Cost did not include demo or many options/fixtures, which we paid for directly.

Their service was great. We had guests coming in about a week out from when we noticed we had the problem. They were able to come in with very short notice and replace the water heater. They also did some extra plumbing work. We were all set up by the time our guests arrived.
Description of Work: They installed a 50 gallon gas water heater and removed our old water heater.
We hired Chimera to build a new family room addition to our house in place of a roof-covered sunroom with deck. Before the work began, we had hired an architect and a building engineer to draw up the plans and make sure the way the sun room is built is sufficient for turning into a living space. We also drew up owner builder permit and managed the project very close. We chose Chimera based on the reviews that they got in Angie's List. We had multiple bids on our project. They were not the cheapest but we decided to go with them. Tyler was the guy that worked with us. The sun room was stripped down to it's bare supporting beams, decking was removed and completely rebuilt - framing, insulation, electrical, gas, doors + windows, drywall, paint. Chimera did an excellent job of staying on the job every day until their portion of the project was complete. Tyler was at the site almost daily. They made sure the job is done correctly - from framing, to electrical to windows and doors. We had our architect visit several times to make sure things are progressing as it should and that work is done correctly and she assured us things look ok. They also had plans, so not much left to the imagination. The room was finally completed by mid-January. We provided our own painter and HVAC guy (for a heat pump and fireplace installation) and they worked with them as the project went along. At one point they built a fireplace framing for the specs we provided only to find out that the HVAC guy have provided a different fireplace. Nonetheless, Tyler reframed for the new fireplace and it turned out beautiful. Overall, we are very satisfied with the work and craftmanship they provided. I am not a builder, so i don't know how many nails should go in a stud, but the final product looks nice. They also built a cherry top for the fireplace which turned out very nice, helped with a countertop installation where it needed capentry work, redressed a support beam in the basement with some nice rough cedar and made a shelf for a closet. One thing that I liked very much is how accessible Tyler was via phone or text. I've dealt with a fair number of contractors that are unreachable. Tyler would always be reachable either via text or phone.

Travis came to our house to discuss what we wanted. He is knowledgeable and professional and we liked him right away. We got three bids for our project and Chimera was not the least expensive, but we thought Travis had the best plan and seemed the most enthusiastic. He had great suggestions for us. We had some requests for custom touches that made the deck too expensive, and Travis was able to suggest alternate and less expensive ways of accomplishing the same things to bring the price down. He also spent about two weeks going back and forth with us on the quote, getting two estimates for sprinkler systems and taking care of our special requests, until we were perfectly comfortable with the final quote. We wanted a raised deck, about 12' x 24', with composite decking and stair riser lights. We also needed a backyard sprinkler system, and we had no lighting or power out there at all. So we needed someone who could plan the entire project, and coordinate with the sprinkler crew and the electrician. Travis and his team handled everything, and did a great job. We never had to call the electrician or sprinkler person ourselves. Travis and Tyler took care of everything, and they touched base with us every day to let us know what was happening with each part of the project. He also came by several times during the project, which took about 2 1/2 weeks. The deck itself is amazing. It's exactly what we pictured, and the construction is solid and impeccable. We had some custom requests for railing, and Chimera was able to accommodate each of them. The sprinklers were completed in less than two days. The entire project was completed four days ahead of the scheduled finish date. The crew was friendly, experienced, professional, and tidy. They didn't leave messes at the end of each day or at the end of the project. We would absolutely recommend Chimera, and we would call them first for any future projects. We had heard so many nightmare stories about contractors, but our project went almost flawlessly!

Called Tyler regarding a re-roof of my cinderblock and brick garage. The roof was all ready removed by my wife and I as well as the 2 car carport roof that was tied into the garage. We decided not to install the carport and just re-roof the garage. We had aready orderd the trusses from another company and had them delivered to our residence for Tyler's company to install. Their were a few stumbing blocks in the way but not the fault of Chimera ( 2 of the truesses were warped which were spotted by Tyler as well as missing and end truss. We had to wait a day to get those from the truss company. Also some of the siding was on back order). Communication was great and they used quality products to build our roof. Both myself and my wife are quite satisfied with the work they did. Would definately use them again for any future projects.

re in the cabinet that they left us.
Description of Work: We gutted the kitchen and master bathroom. Chimera gave us a good layout for the kitchen. Quality of work was good except for the design of the drawer layout. The cabinet quality of the construction of the cabinets was excellent, but chimera had the cabinet maker do three drawers the same thin height and a 15.5 inch deep bottom drawer throughout the entire kitchen and bathroom. We made it work byt putting all the large pots/pans, trays etc in the bottom drawers. If given the chance, I would make sure that I spoke directly with the cabinet maker to be sure and get what I wanted. This job took longer and longer and Chimera signed up new deals for more work, and we went to the bottom of the list. With that work completed, we signed a contract to do the two guest bathrooms and our laundry room. The laundry room came out better than expected, as it is a very small space. The downstairs bathroom was never finished and we were informed that they no longer wished to do the upstairs bathroom. Our frustration level at this point was so high that we were glad to see them go. Chimera built the downstairs cabinet out of particle board with tape for front finish. There is nothing square in the cabinet that they built for that bathroom. They left without making the door and drawer facings and without finishing the paint work. If you have a big job for them, they want your business and your money. If you are near the end of a job, you may lose them. Never again will I pay for most of the job up front.

I have to say not having a kitchen for a couple months was not easy for me because I love to be in my kitchen and love to cook. What made the sacrifice worth it was now I have an amazing new kitchen that is perfectly customized to all my needs and desires! And it gorgeous! I have had so many compliments on it. It looks beautiful from the front window of my house, too!. I have gotten compliments from people who have only walked by. Everyone who comes inside is blown away and I hate to say jealous! It is one of a kind! I love it! It was great to work with Chimera Construction. Travis and Tyler have great taste and understand my style. A neighbor recently commented to me that the finishes are so beautiful and unique and that the craftsmanship is perfect in every detail. She also thought the walnut cabinets were the most beautiful she has ever seen. The back staircase and the steel and walnut railing is super cool and looks amazing. We continued the original oak flooring from the house into the kitchen and it is such a perfect match I can't believe they were able to match it so well. it looks great! I am super happy with how everything turned out. It exceeded my expectations! Chimera is a one of a kind company. They are not your typical contractors. They actually become your friends by the time you are finished. They are so pleasant to work with. They are good people who will go to great lengths to make sure you are happy. I feel lucky to have found them.
Description of Work: Took down 2 walls in the kitchen to open up the space, rebuilt wall to counter height, took out linoleum and replaced with solid wood floors to match the existing floors in the house, rebuilt the back stairs, put in new steel and walnut railing, installed a glass back door, all new custom walnut cabinets, new quartz countertops, new lighting and electrical, new drywall in kitchen in dining room, new paint, refinished antique window frames, installed new sink, dishwasher, refrigerator, stove, hood, microwave and oven.

We purchased a house in Utah County recently, but were not ready to move in until about a month after the purchase. That would have been a perfect time to get some upgrades done such as finishing the garage floor and installing some hardwood floors, since we wouldn't be in the house yet. I also had a number of projects to make the house wheelchair accessible, such as a bathroom remodel and a lift in the garage. The difficulty was that we were moving from California, and would have to make the arrangements over the phone. I initially contacted Chimera because of the glowing reviews they received on Angie's List. Travis was very friendly on the phone. He came to the house and met my son there to assess the anticipated projects and make recommendations. I talked with him on the phone during that assessment, where he made a number of verbal suggestions as to what could be done. He told me that he took a number of photos of the areas needing upgrade, and would send me the photos. He also promised to send me bids for the various anticipated projects. I was excited to work with them, and ready to get started. That's where it ended. I communicated with Chimera several times via e-mail concerning ideas I had for the anticipated projects, and to convey my anxiousness to get started. I never did receive any responses to e-mails. I finally called Travis on the phone several days later. Again he was friendly. We talked about ideas for the house. He promised again to get back to me with photos and bids. Another week goes by, and I am running out of time before I have to move into the house. I phone Travis again. He promises to get photos and bids to me within a day or two. Since that time, I have had no word from Chimera. No email, no phone calls. Nothing. I have given up on them. Now, I have found two other local contractors who are friendly, helpful, responsive, and competent. I now have to get my projects done while we are in the house, creating some additional hassle with moving furniture around, etc. I'm not sure why Chimera never got back to me. A company with a professional attitude should keep their promises. Now, I wouldn't trust them to do my work, because I can't count on them to keep their word. If they don't want my business, the least they can do is tell me so.
Description of Work: No services performed because of lack of communication on Chimera's part.
Our project went very well and the results were all we had hoped for. We found Chimera to be professional and responsible; always responsive to any of our questions or concerns. Likewise, Chimera sub-contractors were trustworthy and profecient . Throughout the project we felt Chimera kept our best interest a priority and we would not hesitate to use them again.
Description of Work: Chimera Construction was hired to perform a complete kithen remodel to include demolition of all cabinets, soffit and removal of appliances. Repairs included sheetrocking, painting, floor and window replacement, electrical updates, installation of countertops, appliances, and fixtures, plumbing for gas, replacement of all household water supply lines as well as a few drains and any related finish carpentry.

They came and discussed options with us and then sent us an email bid.
Description of Work: They gave me an estimate to have a deck built.
I found Chimera Construction after I had already found a really good contractor I intended to use. My husband wanted to get more estimates just to be sure we made the right decision. So I went through an exhaustive search to find more estimates and found a lot of not so great contractors but also found Chimera. I started to question my decision to go with this other more prominent contractor. I was having trouble deciding between the two when Chimera suggested I go see some of their work. I spent a morning looking at both contractors work. I can't believe this wasn't the first thing I did! After seeing each contractors work, the decision was easy. I liked Chimera's style of work more. It was more me. Once they started working I knew I made the right decision. I like to be involved in the project and understand what is happening. I also had ideas but couldn't really figure out how to make them work. Tyler would come back and say, "I was up all night trying to figure out how to arrange the laundry room and came up with this. What do you think?" It felt good to know they were as invested as I was to make it look good and be what I want. I had just bought new washers and dryers and they would move them around and rehook them up so many times just so I could do laundry. Travis and Tyler are extra-ordinarily considerate people. They are always trying to make the experience as pleasant as possible. Travis and Tyler were very helpful with design advice as well. I had originally wanted to go with a different type of flooring which I ended up changing to a beautfiul wool carpet that I love and gorgeous heated tile floors in the bathroom. It was so nice that they understood my style and could steer me in the right direction. It was a very collaborative effort and turned out great. I think my favorite thing about my new basement is the beautiful new master bath my husband and I enjoy every day. We moved our master bedroom downstairs and have an amazing bathroom with a shower which is the best shower I have had in my life! It is so unique and beautiful. We have a opaque sliver of a window in the shower made with a type of resin with imbedded leaves. This feature is double sided as part of our bedroom and shower. It is super cool although hard to explain. It lets light in both ways. We love it! Also in the bathroom Travis built us a custom walnut vanity! It is beautiful and has amazing functionality. Travis and Tyler each have different strengths and together they are unstoppable with what they can produce! I can't say enough good things about Travis and Tyler. I love what they have done to my basement! It is completely one of a kind and more than I could have asked for. They are currently remodeling my kitchen upstairs and can't wait to see the end result. To sum up what I think of Chimera Construction I would say: They are considerate, creative, good, hard working people who actually care about you and your job and they deliver a solid result that has special artistic flare, style and design. I am happy I chose them for my house!
Description of Work: We had our entire basement completely remodeled with all new electrical, new plumbing, new drains, new heating and air conditioning, new gas lines, new furnace, new water heater and new windows. The floor was leveled. New walls were put up and new rooms created. Two new bathrooms with showers were created. Custom walnut vanity built. A new laundry room was created. It was finished off with new drywall, woodwork, new doors and new carpet and tile (heated tile!) So much was done I am probably forgetting something!

It was the number one that was recommended and had the most positive votes in Angie’s List and he totally tried to screw me of $35000. I gave the contractor a drawing from an engineer and the engineer had told me as to how much it would cost and he needed to just get it approved. So when he went to get it approved, he said that he got it approved. Then he said that it would be five times as more money because he wasn’t going to use the drawing because he didn’t believe in the drawing which the city engineers had approved. The engineer that I hired drew it and if the engineers had approved I didn’t know what the problem was. I just thought that he wasn’t very honest because I told him what exactly the budget was and exactly what I needed to be approved. He spent a lot of time trying to approve his own plan that was lot more money. I had a retaining wall that was having problems and a neighbor complained about it. I hired an architect and an engineer to look at it and do a drawing. Then they gave me an estimate about how much it would range and how much it might cost and they said that it might cost around $6000-$8000 to do what the engineer had drawn. So when I gave this guy the drawing, I told him that we had to get a permit and I was told that it would cost around $6000-$8000 and that’s what my budget is for. So then he got it approved and said that he said that he just had to get the permit. He just wanted to get it started and when I asked to talk about the plan, how long he could get it done, when he was available and that kind of thing. Then he said that this project would be about $35000. He said that he could end up being more than that. I told him that when we first started talking, we talked about this drawing and he said that he was not going to work according to that drawing. He also said that he was not going to put his licensed stamp on that drawing and I said that we have an issue. I told him that because he was going in a different direction and wasn’t doing what I originally hired him for. I just thought that the minute that he thought that he was not going to follow that plan; he should have stopped then and there. I presented engineers drawing and a budget. He agreed and took the job but I don’t know what the problem and he increased the bid five times. He changed the course of action and the budget increasing it five times without letting me know. When we had an agreement or appointment he showed up on time. I would not use him in the future.

This is a company that I like that I have done business with. I am in the design and construction industry as well so I know them. They do really nice work and I work on projects with them. They are creative and are problem solvers. They do really quality, intricate work and they do a lot of custom stuff. They are very good at taking interesting spaces and being able to figure out how to remodel unused space. They are not the cheapest bid in town but you get what you pay for. I will use them again in the future.
Description of Work: I have been in several home remodels that Chimera Construction has done.
Travis and his crew performed an entire overhaul on my mother's basement. She had some water damage and we needed to remove the existing paneling, drywall, carpeting and built-in cabinetry in the basement great room. The basement also desperately needed some updating! Travis met with me on a Saturday afternoon, he listened to what I wanted to see happen, offered some great suggestions and got back to me quickly with a very reasonable bid. He and his crew began work within a week. As with all remodels, as the job progressed I added additional items. Travis was so accomidating, he listened to what I wanted, provided the best options and made it happen. Now that it is all finished, my mother has a beautiful new great room, spare bedroom and stairwell. It's bright, open and updated!! Chimera Construction, Travis, Mark, Dan and Nick (I think) did an awesome job!! I'm thrilled with the finished product! Travis was so easy to work with, very professional, very accomidating, flexible and very reasonably priced. I will definately use them again in the future and will whole heartedly recommed them to anyone in need of construction help.
Description of Work: They removed carpet, paneling, drywall and the sub-standard framing. They removed a built in desk and bookshelf as well as a huge multi-section room divider. They re-framed, insulated and drywalled, installed new trim and doors as well as new lighting. They painted not only the walls and ceiling but the fireplace as well, which looks awesome! In addition to painting the great room I had them paint the adjacent spare bedroom and the stairwell. They also helped me out with some additonal painting and electrical work on the main floor.

Really enjoyed working with Chimera Construction, Travis and Tyler worked h****** straightening out my floors and made every effort to square up my house, in fact I don't know if it was ever this square and plumb! They communicated very well and worked fast but were careful to pay attention to details. They went out of their way to answer questions and offer solutions.Truly exceptional work. Worth every penny. As things progress around my house I'm sure I'll have them back to do other projects. They come highly recommended.
Description of Work: The guys from Chimera were able to replace 4 beams in my 106 year old house, three in the basement and one in my living room two of which spanned 18 feet. They sistered new floor joists for both floors and created a much better space for living in our basement. They worked out in detail what we would need in lumber and offered some solutions for questions I had about the best use of space.
We were very pleased by the work that Chimera did for us. Even before the job started, it was clear that Travis has an excellent attention to detail and style. He was very clear about what was and wasn't feasible for our time schedule (we live in a cinder-block house; this limits what can be done without major surgery). He helped advise us as we were making choices about the work to be done, ranging from style of baseboard to color of paint. On the first day, his crew moved the bulkier furniture items out of the rooms with nary a scratch or dent, and got to work. One of the things that particularly impressed me was their dedication to customer satisfaction. Every day, Travis checked in with us to find out if we had any questions or concerns. A couple of times we noticed a minor oversight by one of his subcontractors; it was fixed by evening. We had a couple of sticky doors which they got them down and repainted, and now work beautifully. The rooms being worked on included our bedrooms, and they made every effort to minimize the time we needed to be moved out, and to keep us informed of their progress and schedule. The craftsmanship was first rate. The framing for the new closet is no longer visible, but while we could see it, it looked likely to last longer than the house. Our daughter loves the cabinetry in her new closet; her parents do too. The miter joins on the new baseboards are excellent, and the new thresholds that Travis built are great. Their website is at http://www.chimeraconstructionslc.com/ . I highly recommend them!
Description of Work: After our dog one day decided to dig a hole in our carpeting, we knew it was time to get some work done on the 3 bedrooms and hallway in the back half of our house. Since new carpeting meant moving out all the furniture, we figured it also made sense to get some other work done - painting, adding baseboards, and in our daughter's room, ripping out the old closet and installing a more functional one. We also had some thresholds replaced.
