Let me preface this review that we have used Deck Stylists for several years and were very happy with their work up until this year. Deck Stylists were supposed to restore our deck - secure loose boards, sand, clean and stain in May. The job started out with four guys on the first day, then dropped to one for the rest of the project who did subpar work without supervision. We suspect he wasn't trained in sanding and staining.. There were a lot of sanding errors in the wood and damage to our hot tub from sanding. The only board he secured was the one we pointed out to him that was jutting out. There were plenty more loose. He only stained the upper level of the deck and left the lower level unstained. As he was staining, he got stain on our hot tub, house and deck railings. The owner told us he couldn't get back to us for a week to finish the job at which time he himself came to finish the lower portion. Then it snowed 2 inches on the new stain that night. Needless to say we had a deck with two different colors at that point. Also the upper portion started getting splotches in several areas. We suspected poor prep work and stain mixing. We are trying to get our last payment back - really should get all of our money back because the deck had to be completely redone. Kellen the owner did offer to fix the mistakes, but we did not want his company doing any more damage to our deck. The trust was gone. If you choose Deck Stylists - it's like a box of chocolates. You're not sure what you are going to get.

I tried two different listed e-mail addresses over the last 3 or 4 days. I then called and left a message. The phone transferred to what appeared to be a cell phone. I left another message. I have yet to receive any response. I can understand if someone is busy and may or may not be able to do a job, but to totally fail to respond at all is totally unprofessional. I am now looking elsewhere.

Kellen came over to my house to give me an estimate, it was more than I thought it would be for what we had done. We are happy with the quality of work. It took several weeks for his crew to begin working and several weeks for them to complete the work. He did not include the engineering fee's in his estimate. Its was a complete and total surprise when were charged for it!

I had only the vaguest idea that I needed my terribly worn, buckling, too small, boring rectangular 20 year old backyard deck refinished, and wanted to add a little and quot;interestand quot; to it, maybe in the form of a pergola, maybe with some more room, but I didn't want to spend a ton of money, and needed it done for an upcoming event, a shower for my daughter, that was 10 days away. Kellen had a book of recent jobs, and I liked a little of this one, a little of that one, a little of another, but couldn't really picture what I wanted - what a troublesome client I must have been! He came up with a very good idea, with a pergola and some built in benches...and a couple of other very good ideas that my husband didn't want to because they would change his grilling area. Kellen then came up with a variation of those latter ideas that gave us just a little bit of more deck space but a lot more and quot;interestand quot;....then a week after it was all done, he came back to say HE wasn't happy with the paint scheme, and he suggested something else, which I also liked better and he redid it right away. The pictures are on his website and show you the finished product. Look for a job in 2012 that has the word and quot;pergolaand quot; in it. All of the ladies at the shower raved about it. It is exactly what I wanted. I have had the guys back once to do the recommended maintenance and was very happy with that too. They are prompt, detail oriented, FAST....I couldn't believe how hard all the guys worked. I am about to rehire Kellen to work on our front metal railings now.
Description of Work: He designed a pergola, benches and a very small edition to an existing deck, and refinished the deck, all in one week.

We were very happy with Kellen. He's one of the few home maintenance people I've met who actually returns calls quickly and shows up on time. We had a large redwood deck covered with some crappy sealant that was flaking off all over. After sanding, acid washing, and staining, the deck looks beautiful. They worked hard and finished the whole job in a few days, with meticulous attention to detail (Kellen personally hand sanded around all the beams/doors/fireplace. We will use this company again for ongoing maintenance. (FYI, despite the company name, they will work in SLC).

Job started great, but ended in disaster. The quotes were fair and Kellen worked with us on options to keep the project within our budget. Corey and help did an amazing job on the rebuilding. The rest of the crew were good too if tasked and managed well. The project was very large and the rebuilding of railing and staircase took longer than expected, that's when things started going wrong. Project management was poor and when the rebuilding went long, the crew were taken to other projects. Corey was often left short handed with regard to help and tools, further lengthening the project. Steps for refinishing had to be repeated and the owner/manager was not happy about that. The project started with a lot of attention to detail but as it took longer than expected, there was a lot less attention and rushing to get it over with. We communicated early and often with Kellen (owner) on things that needed to be done/redone and by the end this resulted in his getting tired of us 'complaining' and ended up with large blow out between he and my husband. We were accused of not wanting to pay them, even though we never questioned payments, when the final deck stain came out multicolor and we questioned what stains were used. We had to restain portions of the deck ourselves and came to an agreement on payment to avoid court. About a month after they finished the deck my husband's leg went through a bad board that as not replaced, falling onto my new car, the perfect ending to a job that ended in disaster. IF you use this company due to fair pricing be sure: SMALL PROJECTS ONLY! GET THINGS IN WRITING and WRITE DOWN ITEMS YOU WANT DONE/REDONE DAILY PHOTO DOCUMENT THE PROCESS FOR YOUR RECORDS STAY DILIGENT

Response from Park City Deck Stylists
I agree that this job was a disaster, and also will accept my responsibility for miscommunication with this client. I am sincerely sorry that this was a bad experience for our client and I personally hope that it does not interfere with their enjoyment of the deck. Fortunately for my peace of mind this experience is vastly outnumbered by our happy and loyal clients that we work with on an ongoing basis. Things that are true in this review: 1. The final product was outstanding, especially given what we had to work with in terms of the initial condition of the deck and the budget. 2. There was a phone conversation that got a little heated, I am not sure I would call it a blow out. Here are the things that are not true: 1. Any board that we were paid to replace, we did, and nothing that we installed broke one month later. For this person to fall through the deck to the car below would require several boards to break all at once, and also for a joist to fail since they are only 16" apart. What was ommitted was the fact that we only charged them for about half of the board replacements that we did do,since their budget was so tight and so many of their boards did need to be replaced. 2. That there were multiple stain colors and that the deck needed re staining. I personally came to the house, sanded a small area, and showed them with samples that there were not 2 colors used. This proof only caused more outrage and insistence that I was wrong. The fact is, for us to have used 2 different stain colors would have taken more labor since we would have had to mask one section, change our stain pads and stain trays, and cut in the other area. The orientation of the boards was different from one section to the other, and the light reflected on them differently creating a subtle difference in appearance. 3. That delays were caused by mismanagement is not entirely true. The delays were caused by constant additions to the scope of the work by the clients: taking apart the entire railing and adding new 6 x 6 posts and bottom rail, replacing 30-40 deck boards, and installing and staining new facing on the outer deck edge. These things were being added and it was not efficient for me to have a huge crew there while the scope of work was being changed on a daily basis. Had the scope of work not changed, we would have been done on time. Also, this customer was over budget and trying to save money, which is fine and understandable but you can't do that and have the job progressively expanding. This was in my mind the recipe for the disaster that ensued in the end. What this got was a brand new staircase with free upgrades offered by me in order to do it right, a deck that we literally brought back from the dead for 1.85 per square foot and a new railing that they paid a fraction of the cost of new railing, $35.00 per foot thanks to our companies help. We ended up having to compromise for a lesser amount on top of that by about $1500.00 in order to avoid a collections process that may or may not have included court. This is the only time in our history that we have had to do anything like this. What we have learned from this experience, after 10 years in business without having any contract disputes is that all change orders need to be in writing and fully understood by each party before continuing on a project. This is essential to protect our client as well as us and results in a much better end result both personally and in terms of the finished product. Again I would like to stress that any customer dissatisfaction weighs on me heavily and I would like to apologize to this client again for their inconvenience.

Kellen was extremely prompt in responding to my phone call inquiring about their services. He came to our home, evaluated our deck and the scope of services necessary to get it back to it's original beauty. Honestly my husband and I were torn between restoring a 10-year old deck or replacing it with one made of the synthetic decking products, but after meeting with Kellen, the choice was clear- restore. We have a huge cedar deck and the cost to restore the existing deck was a fraction of what a new synthetic deck would have been, and in the end, NOTHING compares to the natural beauty of wood! Throughout the entire process Kellen and his team of craftmen were punctual, totally professional and really nice. We have dogs and they were always very careful to secure the gate area to ensure that we did not have any four-legged escapes! In addition to the initial deck restoration, Deck Stylists offer deck cleaning and maintenance programs- for which we have already signed up! These programs offer very affordable services to keep our deck looking great- and the best part... my husband doesn't have to spend his weekends working on it!
Description of Work: Kellen, with Deck Stylists, came and evaluated our deck and took measurements of the total area to be restored. In addition, we decided that we no longer wanted a 6.5' X 6.5' hot tub that was on the deck and he made arrangements to safely remove it so that it could be enjoyed by another family. Removing this hot tub was no small feat as the deck railing had to be removed and there was a 8' drop from the edge of the deck to the ground below. We received his itemized estimate, and the work began within that week. It was completed in another week. Our restoration project included total sanding and staining of the existing deck floor, replacing old wood under the hot tub; sanding/painting the deck railing; sanding/staining/painting the deck planters; & sanding/staining/painting the built-in deck seating.
