After I complained to the owner, Scott Hales, he refunded $250 of my money.
Description of Work: Scott Hale lies about the services that need to be done and when they perform services, they are done incorrectly. I had a service contract with them to check my furnace. They told me that the motor gasket was worn out and leaking and needed to be replaced for a cost of $ 800 and that they would suggest I buy a new furnance. The man stated that their company could get me a "discount" of a $7200 furnance for $5600; they suggested a Rheams furnace which is one of the lowest rated ones. I had two more furnance specialists look at the furnance. Both said it was condensation, not a leak; they said even if it were a leak, they would charge at most $250 -300. The man from Scott Hale told me that I needed a new furnance. They put new flues on my water heater and put them in incorrectly. They came back again and still did them wrong. I would never trust this company. They are liars and thiefts. Three weeks prior to this date, I had them fix at a commodate that was leaking. The man checked my waterheater and found that the flues were too small (which was correct). They should have been 4" , not 3". However, when he fixed them, he attached them incorrectly to the furnace. I had to contact them and have them fix them again. Hales charged $200 to fix a leaky toilet. All they want is to get their "foot in the door" so they can overcharge you. I would never have them in my house again.

The service was part of an Angie's list special. The technicians showed up on time and performed the service in addition to cleaning the evaporation coil which had alot of build up (for an extra fee of course but it probably had not been done since before we bought the house).

The deal was easy to set up and they did everything that they said they would. Before they left they cleaned up after themselves.
Description of Work: I purchased a Big Deal with Angie's List for an a/c tune up. The Big Deal was $29.00. I also had them check the freon and fill it up. This was an extra $120.00.

Everything went as I had expected. The inspection was thorough and professional. I would recommend Hale Plumbing to friends.
Description of Work: I took advantage of an Angie's List special to have all the drains in my home checked, and have the water heater flushed. The plumber who made the visit, Dan Cluf, was punctual, thorough, and informative. Low pressure in a shower led to him adjusting a pressure valve, which corrected the problem. He also gave me estimates on repiping the house, and putting in a new water main, since the house isold.

The tune up guy did a good job on cleaning stuff. I had a screeching noise that started a few days ago and I was suggested to replace the system for 7500$ since mine has an old type of refrigerant . I told him that I am not prepared for that kind of a money and it needs to work for now and hence only the part that is damaged needs to be fixed (motor). The estimate I received for about 750$. I wanted to get a second opinion. At the end it cost me $250 and it was about 15 minutes of work to replace! I am glad I avoided a ripoff. The AC has worked fine all summer
Description of Work: I did the spring AC tune up deal with this company. I just used another company and logged in to provide the review and this reminder comes up. Hence the late review

They came to tune-up our air conditioner and after inspecting it told us the compressor is shot and would need to be replaced. We have a home warrenty so we contacted them to come out and confirm the compressor needs to be replaced and they told us nothing was wrong with the compressor and the air conditioner just needed to be cleaned. We paid $150 for the air conditioning company from our home warrenty to clean our air conditioner and the unit is still not working properly and both the company from our home warrenty as well as Scott Hale Plumbing, Heating, and Air Conditioning were not able to correct the problem. Now the company from our home warrenty is saying that we most likely just need to buy a new air conditioner. I don't feel I can trust any air conditioning company now because we get different answers as to what is wrong and in the end it still does not work properly.

Response from Scott Hale Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning
Member did not allow us to repair the air conditioning unit because she had a Home Warranty and allowed that company to come into her home and perform the work they recommended, instead of using us. They cleaned the unit however did not make any of the repairs we suggested. Then Member states the work completed by the Home Warranty company did not work and that neither of us could fix her issues. Upon completion of each job for Scott Hale Plbg. and Heating, the tech calls into the office to report his findings, and the comments about the customers equipment. On Member's a/c unit he said, "there were numerous issues" which needed correcting. When Member comments that neither company could fix her problem, she is mistaken, and this job should not have appeared in Angie's review list because she would not allow us to perform the work we described. She was only charged the minimum dispatch fee. Scott Hale (President)

It was a Sunday and we were desperate to find a plumber to come to my dad's house to fix his kitchen and bathroom sinks before company came that evening. We started at the top of the list of plumbers in SLC on Angie's list and Hale's was able to send someone same day. The plumber was professional, knowledgable, clean, neat and tidy, plus very polite. All work completed same day.
Description of Work: Kitchen faucet was blowing water in all directions at the connection between the neck and the off/on. Also, one bathroom faucet had been turned off completely many months ago so needed to be repaired-as water was leaking profusely from the neck as well.

Sometime in March, 2012, I had purchase an "Angie's List Special A/C check-up Deal" from Schoo Hale Plumbing-Heating/Air, for $29.00, normally priced over twice that much. I waited until after June, to schedule the check-up. So it was that Mr. Tyler T., one of the Hale's company technician's, arrived early, and upon hooking up his gauges to the A/C condenser in the rear of the home, he stated that the "pressures" were within range. Then, after looking at the condenser for about 15-20 seconds, he informed me that one of the "fan" blades, and probably the "motor" also, seemed out of balance. I replied that I hadn't noticed anything different from previous years [unit is 6-years old]. He replied that this is often an indication that the shaft of the motor is wearing, and that bearings may be worn. I asked for a rough estimate of replacement of the motor and the fan-blades, and he said it would be in the $550.00 range for both. I then asked him what the amperage-draw reading was on his AMP meter, and he said that the system was running about 8-to-9 amps, -- though he preferred to see amperage-draws in the 13 to 14 amp range, as that was generally a more efficient level. I would have guessed just the opposite, so I informed him that I would look into the matter, and get back with him --"if I wanted to pursue that sort of repair." That evening, I e-mailed the man who had installed the A/C unit back in 2006, who is Chad Humphrey, of Humphrey Heating and Air. I had asked Chad to also service this same unit two years afterwards, and it had run extremely well over the years. Now, I wrote Chad and told him about this service call from the HALE's Company, and asked him what he knew about the advice given me, --that one of the "fan" blades and "motor" seemed out of balance. I told Chad that I thought that the man from HALE's had ( a) attempted to build a case for repair on a minimal issue, and (b) that he had tried to push me into buying something I did not really need. I also told Chad that I had tested the A/C the next day, and that it performed as well as it always had. Chad was able to pick up my e-mail later that evening, and wrote back the following message: "I think your suspicions are correct. I have never told a customer that their fan blades are off [or out of balance]. Generally I tell customers to replace their condenser fan motor when it goes out. And as far as the amp draw, a higher amp draw than what the specs say indicates there may be a problem. I think what you have experienced is a technician who is getting payed on commission which is typical and not necessarily a bad thing --unless you have a technician who is not honest. My recommendation is to do just leave everything as it is. If your air is coming out [of the air-vent at] 55 degrees [the temperature I seen during my own test] then the A/C is doing its job. Keep your condenser clean and change your filter as needed." I guess I will not take advantage of the Angie's List A/C check-up any more, and call Chad Humphrey again, next time. -KB

The first appointment was rescheduled due to weather. We had to pay an additional fee to top up coolant on one of the units which cost almost $200. Whether this was a good price or not we do not know. If we hadn't done it then and instead called around to see what people charge then they said a service call charge would be added on if they had to come back out. They did say our AC unit was not sized correctly for our house and therefore works harder than it should. They say the compressor sounds bad and will probably die within the next year or two. Had a second independent consult on the AC unit. Nothing wrong with it as the compressor is working as it should. Did find that Scott Hale plumbing failed to put the caps on the coolant -- thereby causing it to slowly leak out.
Description of Work: Performed preventative maintenance on our A/C units (x2). We had purchased two Angie offers for A/C maintenance with this company. We have two A/C units with our house. Overall they were very professional.

Scott Hale Plumbing came the same day I called them. I explained my experience with the flooding and where the previous plumber had snaked. I showed Scott Hale Plumbing where the Sewer Clean Out was and they explained that is exactly where they wanted to work from. They also discussed the roof vent. Following his snaking and use of the camera, he wrote me a bid for expected work needing to be done. Unfortunately, he did not realize the magnitude of the prolem until he opened the basement floor and could visually see the extent of the warped pipe and the work needed to correct the problem. Scott Hale Plumbing was at my home daily doing the work to finsish in a timely manner. They brought extra workers to assist completing the work quicker. He explained findings and what needed to be done during the course of the repair. They replaced the tile and kept the rest of the basement fairly clean. I was pleasantly surprised the basement was basically clean (a simple mopping and vacuuming resolved) when they had completed the job. After digging up the pipe, there was a huge pile of dirt in my basement but it was on top of a floor covering to protect the floor. They definitely cleaned up after themselves after completion of the repair. My only negative is I did not know the escalating costs as it became apparent the repair was much more involved than the plumber initially considered. They were wonderful working with me financially in regards to the cost and payment. Another plumbing company gave me a bid for $7000 more than Scott Hale Plumbing and had informed me the repair needed was at a place in my front yard which would have been incorrect. If I went with that company, they would have dug up my front yard and not found the problem. He too snaked from the basement toilet never asking about the Sewer Clean Out
Description of Work: I had a main sewer line back up in my basement. I had been told before I had a "belly" in my basement sewer line but had been able to keep it from flooding by sporadic snaking of the drain. Since living in this house all plumbers have snaked and run a camera through the basement toilet - no plumber before ever asked about the Sewer Clean Out or discussed running a camera and snaking from the roof vent. I learned about the Sewer Clean Out and roof vent prior to calling Scott Hale Plumbing. Scott Hale Plumbing was informed where the Sewer Clean Out was (approximately 12 feet from the basement toilet), they ran a camera and snaked through the Sewer Clean Out and determined I had a 15 foot "belly" in the pipe running under my basement floor to the outside of my house. Due to the flooding, a Restoration Company had restored my basement to it's pre-flooding status. I had the toilet replaced by the plumber who had been called to assist snaking out the drain (which he did, from the toilet and his camera was broken so he could not view the true size of the "belly") and resolve the cause of the flooding. I was left with the assumption I could continue snaking the drain over time but was informed that sometime in the future I would need to resolve the "belly" and main drain may need replacing. He is the one who informed me of the roof vent (which he said he did not have the equipment to snake from the roof vent). I had new tile and carept laid but was discovering continued gurgling from the toilet and a water heater drain near by (I'm told that meant pressure was still in the line). That's when I joined Angie's List and called Scott Hale Plumbing. They had to remove a section of the new tile, was able to work in a way to prevent removal of the new carpet and replaced the warped ABS pipe under my basement floor and put in a liner out to the city sewer connection. They used the Sewer Clean Out for snaking and camera determining the exact site of the "belly" and magnitude of the problem. Approximately 30 years ago the basement was remodeled into a studio apartment involving adding a bathroom with sink, toilet and shower. It was confirmed after Scott Hale removed the ABS pipe under my basement floor the pipe was warped when placed resulting in the lengthy "belly". It apparently became an issue because of settling resulting in a non-sloping pipe that also had a "belly" causing the liquid content to try going "uphill" out to the main sewer line.

The technician came out and was here for 15 minutes and told me he could not do the tune-up and that I needed an entire new air conditioning unit. He quoted that at $6,000.00. I thought I should get a second opinion and called JNK Heating and Air Conditioning. He came out and told me there is absolutely nothing wrong with my unit. I feel that Scott Hale Heating and Air was trying to scare me into purchasing an entire new unit before summer began. I hope he's not tried to rip off others.

The repairmen got all of the permits from the city and were ready to work three days after they were hired. They finished the work three days after that.
Description of Work: Phillip Gold of Scott Hale (along with Derek), replaced all of the water lines inside the house, while Josh rerouted the sewer line outside. All repairs were done in two and a half days. They did an excellent job. The house is over 100 years old so they had to retrofit everything. Originally the sewer line was to be repaired, on further inspection they recommended that it be rerouted and replaced. I marked a B on the price because it was double what I expected to pay. That is not the fault of Scott Hale, it is just the nature of working out unknown problems. I think that they gave me every break they could it was just very expensive. I am so glad that Phillip Gold was the plumber working on the job, he understood what needed to be done and saw that all details were taken care of. I recommend to anyone getting this extensive amount of work done to take the bid and double it to allow for the unknowns. Also make certain that you trust the individuals doing the work. When you get the bid, know who is going to do the actual work. In my case the original people who bid on the project were the ones who did all of the repairs.

Several holes had to to be cut into the walls and ceiling in order to replace all the galvanized piping. The workers were very courteous, professional, and made every effort to minimize the effects of the noise and dust. They completed the job quickly, patched up and painted the holes, and swept up the dust! At all times I was impressed by their emphasis on customer service and quality. i highly recommend this company for any plumbing, heating, or AC needs..

Scott Hale and his employees have helped us with many projects over a 20 year period, to include installing, maintaining and repairing water heaters, furnaces, air conditioners, remodeling & replumbing an entire apartment, and main line replacement, all in our own home and several apartments we own. We have always found their service to be very prompt, thorough and professional, which is what has kept us working with them for so many years.

The plumber that came to my home was nice and had good intentions, but didn't seem to be very knowledgeable. He actually caused some damage during the inspection and charged a rather high fee for the service call. Ultimately, I chose another company which did solve the problem quickly and efficiently. UPDATED AUGUST 5, 2012: Excellent follow-up.
Description of Work: I hired them to diagnose a drain problem. UPDATED AUGUST 5, 2012: I had an initial negative service experience by one worker from Scott Hale Pluming in December of 2011. What happened next gave me a different perspective of the integrity of the company. Mr Hale personally called to talk to me in order to understand my point of view about the situation. As a result he refunded the money I paid for the service which I found very unexpected. It demonstrated to me his dedication to customer service and effective service recovery. This act gave me reason to pause and to reconsider my feelings about the company. I realize mistakes can happen. What I found positive about Scott Hale was his interest and willingness to improve quality and services provided by is company.

While their work overall was good, I was completly disappointed in what appeared to be the bait and switch. They quoted me one price. When I had to go out of town, they came back to finish work and quoted my wife another price. I wrote a critique of this to the company, but never got a response. UPDATED JULY 19, 2012: This is an update of an earlier review wherein I reported an initial problem with this company regarding a price quote versus the actual charge I paid upon completion of the work. While the work performed was very good and prompt, the final price was more than quoted. Upon seeing my review on line, the Company owner, Scott Hale, called me and expressed concern over the price differential. Mr. Hale was very responsive, and upon discovering that the work involved did not change in scope from the original quote, he offered to refund the difference; I accepted this offer and promptly received a check for the difference. I have always experienced quality work when using Scott Hale Plumbing, this latest experience also shows that the company is very concerned about customer service. I would not hesitate to use Scott Hale Plumbing in the future.

The price for one hour was $350. This is derived from a book of rates. The tech did not provide an estimate before starting work after diagnosis which was required under his contract. They did not see the "exact" issue in the book for tankless heaters so they charged a full industrial boiler rate. They did not let me see the book of rates. When I called to say the problem was not fixed the owner said he would charge an additional $350 to come out again. He was not polite. Avoid this company.

Did the work quickly and probably at a minimum cost (2 days as I recall for the sewer replacement). Took care of the concrete work for us - we didn't have to find another contractor to tear out or pour the concrete. Over the years, Scott Hale plumbing is the only plumber I will use.
Description of Work: Had a backed up sewer in an older home. First, they used the camera to inspect the line. A big tree grows over the sewer and the roots were visible. They reamed out the roots. This was about $600. Then it turns out the sewer line was sagging, which is not apparent with a camera inspection. As a consequence, it was necessary to rip up the driveway, replace the sewer, and replace part of the concrete of the driveway.
