They did an extremely great job. Very professional, careful of our yard, and things were completely cleaned up when they were done. They even checked in with us later to make sure we were completely satisfied.

Contacted Martin Skabelund roofing early in the summer for installation of a few attic vents through their website. Quick response from the owner with a quote and an indication that we were a small job and he'd fit us in. I touched base a couple of times over the summer to try and keep us on his mind. Finally, got a call a Saturday morning saying they could be there within the hour if that was okay with us. We waited a bit longer than we would've liked, and some warning would've been nice, but I understand that we were a tiny half day job, so I'm glad he took it at all. Crew arrived, followed by owner, who was very friendly and willing to check on a seal on our chimney while the crew was up there. Crew was professional and courteous. Work went well, but then the crew left without checking in with us and when I went out, I saw that the chimney seal wasn't addressed and that there was a bunch of debris up on the roof. A bit upset, I emailed the owner, who got back to me immediately with an apology for the crew not checking in before leaving, for not addressing the chimney seal (which, granted, was a day of last minute request), and for leaving the mess. He had the crew there first thing Monday morning to address those two issues and it looked great by the time I got home from work. Given the response, I would hope and suspect that this was an odd occurrence and the owner did work very hard to make us happy customers despite being very small customers. I wouldn't expect the fastest turnaround for a small project from these guys, but I would absolutely use them again. They were professional, did good work at a great price, and the owner seems legitimately concerned with customer satisfaction.

EXCELLENT JOB! They replaced a portion of our roof and they did a super job. They kept us informed on when they would be working and on the quality and warranty of the product they used. They did a super job matching the other portion of the roof that did not need to be replaced.

He was easy to contact and his bidding process was quick. He has a 4-6 week lead time and that was fine by me. He kept in contact during the lead time period as we selected the color and style of shingle and drip edge. That frequent contact was very helpful for us since we had never done a and quot;re-roofand quot; before. He showed up when he said he would and the job went very smoothly - Martin is a pro and knows what he's doing. Post-job clean up was really good - with only a few remnants visible upon property inspection Probably the best roofer in the valley. Uses his own crews instead of sub-contracting out - that is a major positive for me since other roofers sub-contract out the work. Get on his schedule 4-6 weeks ahead of time. His price was very competitive, actually a lot lower than 2 other bids i received.
Description of Work: Re-shingled my home's roof. Tear off of existing shingles and clean up of property. New moisture barrier, drip edge, tar paper and asphalt shingles. Martin was also very helpful in working with shingle vendor - i filed a claim with Tamco since my 25 year shingles only lasted about 12 years - Martin was super helpful in dealing with that claim process.

We never knew exactly when they would arrive...sometime in late July was what they said. We had to call repeatedly and finally only knew they were coming for sure when a load of sheathing was delivered on 8/10. They arrived early on 8/13 to strip the roof, a task that was not completed that day. The next day some workers began sheathing while other workers continued stripping. They sheathed over rotten wood, debris, bent over nails, etc. We stopped them and explained that we needed to replace the rotten decking as agreed upon (at extra cost). The owner declared the decking wood fine to be sheathed and shingled over. We objected - the wood was completely unsound, even for decorative purposes, and this wood had to hold the weight of sheathing and shingles plus snow load. Additionally, the sheathing was not being well measured and the cuts they made left large gaps near chimmneys. This is when we knew we had a problem. We looked at the rest of the roof and realized that nails were not being pulled or pounded in, they were being bent over (and in some cases bent over on top of old shingles and other garbage) . This caused bumps and gaps between the sheathing they had laid and the roof itself. We asked that the roof be more thoroughly cleared of debris and the nails removed, which they objected to. Other roofing and weatherproofing materials arrived and they were not all the same brand, and many packages were half used. We had requested ridge vents (at extra cost) and turtle vents arrived which, in addition to not being what we asked for, didn't match the shingle color. It became clear at this point that Martin Skableund intended to throw sheathing over the existing roof, as-is, and shingle over everything, not repairing or otherwise addressing any of the problems we pointed out. At this point we asked them to cease work. They left about 1/4 of the roof unstripped and covered in debris. It took our next roofer a full day to finsh stripping the roof, pulling all the nails and removing the improperly installed sheathing. We were billed for stripping of the roof, and haul away of what they did actually remove from the roof, as well as for the improperly installed sheathing that has to be removed in order to repair the roof. I would not recommend this roofer.
Description of Work: We need a tear off and reroof on an historic home. Skabelund's bid was within range of other bids received and we had agreed that some additional cost would be incurred after decking was revealed when the roof was stripped. We knew some decking wood was rotted and had to be replaced and we knew the eaves needed some work. Skabelund agreed to this at extra cost. He seemed completely willing to do this extra work at the time of the bid.

Response from MARTIN SKABELUND ROOFING
Martin Skabelund Roofing has been in business for 19 years with many satisfied customers and a great reputation within Cache Valley, Utah. Martin Skabelund himself has been roofing for 37 years full time. He started with his father’s company, also a well respected company. Martin Skabelund Roofing attempts to meet every customers need, providing Cache Valley, Utah with professional service and quality roofing. Martin Skabelund Roofing is known for it’s customer service and ability to work with customers. Unfortunately sometimes customers concerns cannot be met, although extremely rare, it saddens Martin Skabelund that this occurs. The following are the events that led to work not being completed as told by Martin Skabelund, owner and operator of Martin Skabelund Roofing. Martin Skabelund Roofing arrived on the job on 8/13/12. They began to tear-off for the majority of the day and then explained to the home owner that they would return tearing of the next day. Upon arriving the next day, Martin Skabelund Roofing employees began removing the rest of the roof and pounding nails down to prepare to sheet the roof with OSB sheeting. After roof removal, Martin Skabelund and home owner began discussing options to fix the rotten decking along the bottom, overhanging eves. The two decided that extra support would be needed to reinforce the overhanging eves. Upon this decision Martin Skabelund brought in a well respected General Building Contractor, Bruce Birky, for a second opinion free of any charge. After the overhanging eves were reinforced, Martin Skabelund then drove the member's husband to several home improvement stores in search of decking to replace the rotten decking. This took around an hour and a half and concluded at Home Depot where we found matching decking. Upon returning it was agreed that her husband would replace the rotten decking before we sheeted over top of it. This was the reason why sheeting was laid at 4 feet from the edge to wait for the repair of the rotten decking. Martin Skabelund and crew began laying the OSB sheeting, with the homeowner, closely watching. After around 10 sheets were laid, it became apparent due to the member's husband's demeanor that our work wasn’t satisfactory to him. He then began to address his concerns upon which time he told Martin that he wasn’t “laying the OSB properly”. A discussion ensued for 30 minutes about his concerns. After the discussion had occurred both parties agreed to part ways and Martin would bill him for the work that had been performed. This was around 11:00 a.m. on 8/14/12. Even after being asked to leave the job by the member's husband Martin Skabelund and his employees stayed to clean up the roof debris on the ground. Upon finishing Mr. P apologized for not being able to work together and thanked Martin Skabelund for cleaning up the ground debris efficiently. Although both parties decided to part ways it was done in a professional manner with both parties very civil and pleasant. Upon reading the statement issued by the member, Martin Skabelund Roofing has found the following inconsistencies with her story. It is to be noted that she never spoke with Martin Skabelund nor any of the company’s representatives at any point in time. The employees and Martin Skabelund discussed things with only her husband. • Martin Skabelund was telephoned by the member's husband once on 8/3/12 about when the company would start the job and arrived on 8/13/12 as promised • Martin Skabelund never promised to tear off the roof in one day. • The roof was completely stripped of shingles with the nails pounded down and then the OSB sheeting was laid. • Upon roof removal Martin Skabelund Roofing began sheeting 4 feet from the edge with the agreement that he would replace the rotten decking that was discovered upon roof removal. • Martin Skabelund never agreed to putting OSB sheeting over rotten decking and agreed with the home owner that decking needed to be replaced. Also Martin Skabelund asked the home owner, Mr. P, how he wanted to proceed to replace the rotten decking. • The materials were in accordance with the bid, Ice Shield as needed by building code and 30 lb. felt to waterproof the roof. The use of different brands of said materials is not against building code and wasn’t specified nor identified in the bid or as a concern at the time. • He never requested ridge vent and the agreement of turtle vents (square back vents) were listed in the bid. It is our assumption that due to the other bids they received that some might have included ridge vent however as previously said Martin Skableund Roofing’s bid did not include ridge vent. Furthermore, most turtle vents do not exactly match the shingle color. • The below pictures illustrate that the roof was completely stripped. • Martin Skabelund Roofing can not be held responsible for how long the “next” roofer took to supposedly complete removing debris. Like previously written, it saddens Martin Skabelund Roofing when the customers demands are irrational and cannot be met. Martin Skabelund has been roofing for many years and holds a General Roofing Contractors License, which proofs his extensive knowledge in roofing as do the amount of time spent. If there is anything that is reasonable that Martin Skabelund Roofing can do that has not been previously done to resolve this review, it will be done. Pictures of the event and the work completed are available upon request. They show Martin Skabelund to not be at fault with what was being completed. The major issue that I had not anticipated was related to the reinstallation of the gutters. The difference in the thickness of the roofing material thickness played a major role (which I was not advised of beforehand), but when I expressed my concern I was advised (by the company owner) that the problem was “under control.” In point of fact, the owner did return to address the problem that resulted as a result of the initial gutter installation by his crew. However, I spent the last weekend of September in resolving a problem I later noted at the interface between the gutters and the vertical downspouts servicing the gutters at the northwest and southwest corners of the house. At the southwest corner, there was only a single sheet metal screw holding the gutter to the transition piece between the gutter and the downspout and there was a large opening present in the transition piece. In point of fact, both downspouts were non-vertical and had been haphazardly reinstalled. Some effort was required to realign the downspout and to effect a more permanent connection between the transition pipe and the gutter and to fasten the downspout to the house. The most difficult problem occurred at the northwest corner, again at the interface between the gutter and the downspout. I had pointed out the skewed angle which existed after his crew had completed the roofing, but the owner insisted that it had not been done by his work crew. I did not dispute this statement at the time, as I had not actually observed them working on this gutter. However, upon closer inspection I found that the vertical downspout had been moved from its original position and that the transition piece had been physically jammed into the downspout. In point of fact, the downspout was plugged with debris when I removed it (I have documented this with photographs). Next, I found a major problem that resulted from moving the entire gutter about an inch eastward, causing the opening cut into the bottom of the gutter not to be aligned with the west facing exterior wall. I addressed this problem and reinstalled the various components so as to make the downspout both functional and physically stable. In total, I spent some 15 hours engineering and re-installing these downspouts and permanently securing them to the gutter and the downspouts. Assuming a rate of $50/hr labor for my time, the cost of addressing these downspout issues was estimated to be $750, not including materials. I am sure it would have been considerably higher if I had contracted the work out to a commercial firm. The quality of the work is hard to judge; that part of it which I could observe (the gutter installation) left much to be desired and left me to wonder about the actual level of competence of the shingle laying itself.
Description of Work: The contract was intended to replace cedar shakes (installed in 1978) with composite asphalt shingles. I assumed that gutter re-installation was part of the overall job and was advised by company owner that this aspect of the job was "under control." Although the gutters were reinstalled, no compensation for the difference in thickness between the original shake roof and the new shingles was taken into account and the slope of the gutter(s) was generally incorrect. This problem was subsequently addressed by the owner and one of his installers. However, closer inspection of the interface between the gutters and the downspout revealed extremely sloppy work, which required approximately 15 hours of additional work to rectify.
