Backus Lock-N-Key

I know the following review is very long but I received very poor service from Backus Lock n Key. The drama began when we lost a very expensive 2008 Nissan Armada remote smart key w/uncut emergency transmitter safety key. These keys are very expensive thru the dealership. However, I found the key online for $75. I called Backus Lock-n-Key. The locksmith/owner, Jeff quoted me $45 service fee to program the remote and cut the key. I had used Backus in the past for key cutting. The owner's wife had always been very nice and personable. Also, his website advertise a Military Discount. I called the guy twice just to make sure of the cost before I went in. When I went in ... Jeff/owner immediately quoted me a higher price. He said I never told him I had the transmitter as well and it would be an additional $25 on top of the original $45. I spent almost 22 years in the Air Force in Supply & Logistics where I learned to be very specific. I had described the remote and key in complete detail over the phone. I am sure he was just trying to suck more money out of me. He blamed me for the miscommunication which just isn't good business. I know how specific I was over the phone. I don't believe $25 was worth losing my business and my future references. I turned around and left his shop. I went out to my car with my 2 young sons and had the windows down while I researched other locksmiths on my smartphone. Then Jeff came out of his shop and approached my car window. He said I could program the key myself. I told him I wasn't technically inclined. He could tell that I was on the phone ... I told him I was finding another locksmith. To which he told me, that all the local locksmiths in Layton would just refer me back to him because he was the only person who could program my remote key. I told him if that was indeed true I would rather pay the dealership more money then to pay for his services. I went to another another local locksmith. I spoke with the owner on the phone and explained my dilemma. He told me he wasn't sure if he could program the remote key. He might not have the correct diagnostic equipment. He said if he had the correct equipment it would cost a $20 service fee and a small fee to cut the key. Because of his uncertainty, I called Nissan. The dealership quoted me $55. I was really surprised. After trying to make sure of the price, I learned the dealer also would charge an additional $27 to cut the key. That seem a little expensive but at least I knew I had options. So I went to the other locksmith. The owner's son tried his best to help me. It turned out that he didn't have the correct equipment. He cut the emergency/safety key for FREE and called two of his competitors' to see if they could program my smart key. They didn't have the correct equipment either. (Now that is service!!) So I ended up taking the remote key to Ken Garff Nissan in Ogden. They did indeed program the remotes for $55 and the second locksmith saved me $27 by cutting the key for free. I was very dissapointed with Backus Lock n Key's integrity. I will not visit his shop again ... ever.
