Starkey Lawn & Landscaping

The Bermuda grass in my lawn was gradually dying because of too much shade. In 2013 Steve Starkey quoted me a price of $4350.00 to remove the old grass and replace it with Celebration Bermuda, underseeded with fescue and rye. The installation of the sod went very well and was done in mid-May 2013. However, certain areas of the lawn never seemed to green up. Mr. Starkey recommended that I discontinue use of A-Perm-O-Green since their chemicals seemed to be killing the grass. I did. I had his lawn service care for the grass all that summer to give the new grass the best chance it could have. After a few months of looking at brown grass, I realized that some of the sprinkler heads were too low in the ground, so I had Mr. Starkey elevate them. Some of the sprinkler nozzles were only spraying the outside of the circle they were supposed to cover, so those were replaced with ones that had two radii of coverage in the same nozzle. I watered the lawn throughout the winter. By the spring, most of the Celebration Bermuda had died, though I still had a fair amount of rye and fescue. However, there were patches where there was no grass at all. (My old Tech Turf in the alley had done fine over winter with no care at all.) Although Mr. Starkey's crew managed my lawn in the spring of 2014, he did not seem interested in figuring out why the grass was doing so poorly. Sometimes he would answer my texts, but he never did address the dead grass problem. It wasn't until I discussed the situation with my neighbor and with Sparkman's Nursery, that I realized I probably had grubworms. A-Perm-O-Green had treated the lawn for grubworms for 10 years, so they had never been a problem before. Did the grubworms come in with the new sod? I'll never know, but I have decided that Mr. Starkey and his crew will not be working on my lawn any more.
