Down to Earth Landscaping and Lawn Care

This is the 2nd year that I used the services of "Down to Earth Landscaping". Jim and his crew are professional and very meticulous. Landscaping and mulch spreading is tiresome, backbreaking and get down and dirty work and Jim works right along side his crew in getting soiled. Our beautiful landscaped area that Jim created last year was being run over with weeds and the plants were overgrowing. Jim returned my call the same day and came over the following day to see what needed to be done. Because this is the busiest time of the year for him, it would be two weeks before he would be able to do the work. He quoted me a very fair price for the amount of work that needed to be done. One of the things that I really like about "Down to Earth Landscaping" is that they get the job done quickly. Jim has a crew large enough that once the work starts, it's usually completed in a day or two at the most. I am extremely pleased with the work done and will continue to use this company in the future.

I got hold of Jim on the first call to his shop after leaving messages with a couple other businesses and getting no reply. Although Jim said he didn't think he'd have time to get to the work I needed done for a week or more, he agreed to come out and give me an estimate and try to fit me into his schedule. He showed up the following morning at the agreed to time and gave me the estimate and said he'd try to get to it as soon as possible. Jim called later that day to say he and his crew would be by that very afternoon. Jim and his crew of four showed up and went straight to work and had the job completed quickly and exceeded my expectations. They were all very courteous, helpful and responsive. I will definitely call Jim and use Down to Earth in the future and I very highly recommend him to my neighbors.

They were great. They got into a little more than they planned for because they had to haul rocks around to the back of the house. They couldn't get any trucks or any large equipment. They just had to manhandle it in wheelbarrows and that was a lot of work. They did a good job. I am calling them to do some more work for me.

Down to Earth was awesome. Jim listened to our general ideas and ran with it. We are so excited for spring to come and the plants to bloom. His crew is very polite and professional and worked all day, every day. They even finished everything a day earlier than expected. Jim was great with little changes we asked for and they cleaned up everything after finishing. Jim was able to work within our budget and we basically did the whole deal on a handshake. He Xeriscaped the back yard and pretty much eliminated any effort from us in the future. We won't have to replace the sprinkler system that was torn up from prior construction. The difference in what the back yard looked like when he first came until now is like night and day. I had never seen as many positive reviews for someone as I saw for Down to Earth, and now I know why. I would not hesitate to use them again and would recommend them to anyone.

Jim and his crew were great. Jim was right on time to see what we wanted done and had an estimate back to me later that day. He gave us a start date two weeks before and then they were actually able to start a day early. I really expected the work to take several days, but they were done in two. The quality of the work is great and you would never even know they were there. They cleaned up the work area and left it just like they found. I would recommend them to anyone and we will be using them again in the future.

I called Down to Earth because another highly rated company would not return my calls. James came out for the estimate and communicated well before and during the project. They removed old grass/weeds, tilled up the existing dirt, added better dirt, installed sod, and composted the yard. James and the guys were very professional and cleaned the work area to our satisfaction. I was especially impressed with the attention to detail that they gave the project. I will use them in the future and tell others about the good service.

The workers were great but they could have done better communicating with us. They left the area fine and cleaned up after themselves. I would tell a friend that they do great work, are very prompt, but to make sure you are communicating with them.

Initial problem: couldn't keep dirt around foundation of a house that had foundation leveling 5 years ago, and again 3.5 years ago. After trying many things, including gutters, and getting many other recommedations (one being: cover it all in concrete!) I called on Jim to get a landscaping perspective. He had many good ideas that no one had come up with before, and they all made sense. Lucky for me he'd just had a large job delayed and could start the next day. Hired him on the spot with a handshake. He and his crew were always very professional. As this was a rental house, I was not onsite all the time, but every time I stopped by I was pleased with the progression of work and how tidy they were considering the scope of the project. Big pluses in my book: dirt had washed out from under both the driveway and the patio and Jim suggested blowing mortar under both to give them stability and keep them from further cracking or collapsing; they also took care of raising the sewer line clean out and the sprinkler heads without me having to hire someone else; on one area near the patio I suggested replacing the plants with sod. Jim asked if the tenants would water the sod daily... something that hadn't even occurred to me, and of course they wouldn't, so he used river rock in that area also. In areas where we needed to move the water away from the house he also used plastic under the river rock instead of the landscaping cover that is porous. Again, something I wouldn't have thought of. I was so pleased with their work that I also took advantage of an offer he had going for one day of yard clean up for an additional $500. This is a BIG yard with a large xeriscaped area on a STEEP hill that hadn't been pruned in several years. It was much more than a one day job, even for a crew of 3, but they did an amazing job in that one day - it no longer looked like a jungle. I was amazed to stop by that day and see that my fan palm had a trunk - hadn't been able to see it for years. Wish I'd had enough money to hire them for a second day to finish everything! The ONLY negative I found in working with Jim is he usually works on his word and a handshake. Since this is a rental house I needed something in writing from him. The invoice he sent me wasn't as professional as it might have been, but it should be enough for the IRS if I ever get audited. On the plus side, he was willing to do this for me even though it's not his norm to do so, AND he did it in a timely fashion. He also told me that if this doesn't solve the problem, to get back in touch with him... if some of the river rock areas are retaining water for any reason he could drill holes through the mortar in the retaining walls to provide drainage. It left me feeling that he was invested in the solution and he would be there if it isn't solved 100%. I can't wait till I have enough money to hire him at MY house. He's much too good to only use on rentals!

Received quick response from provider on getting a free estimate for lawn care services. Wasn't able to meet him at the vacant property but he offered to check it out on his own and let me know the costs. He was prompt in calling me back and updating me on the services he could provide and the costs. We scheduled the date of service, and just as he said he would, he provided me with before and after pics of the property once the service was completed. The final result was awesome! And I never even had to be there -- just 2 or 3 quick phone calls/txt msgs with the provider over the course of a few days, and the work was done, payment in the mail. Definitely want to use this provider again; they're prompt, friendly, flexible, attentive to detail and not too bad on pricing either. Highly recommend.

Outstanding...called on a Thursday, Jim was out next day w/estimate. Scheduled work for 11AM following Wed (12 Nov). MOST IMPORTANT: when he got behind, he actually CALLED to give me a new time or different option. New time worked; he and crew of 3-others showed and knocked all out in about 3-hours. I probably would have had to pay $200+ just for the mulch. I plan on using these folks next Spring.

Showed up on time and did exactly what we agreed upon with a handshake. Very professional and friendly crew. Were very flexible with last minute changes I wanted. Cleaned up after job was completed. Couldn't ask for more and at a great price.

Please see above. Outstanding customer service, workmanship and initiative. In addition to the excellent work performed, the cost was extremely reasonable. We have made arrangements for Jim to return, trim trees, and continue to expand our landscaping as our budget allows. What is so special about Down To Earth, is the owner is willing to work with us and instead of demanding a "job" and payment upon completion. I sincerely look forward to working with this company until we have our entire landscape completed! I also feel comfortable havin both the owner and his representatives in and around our home, without concern for personal or property safety!

I located Down To Earth on Angie's List, drawn to them by their consistent "A" rating by the many reviewers listed. I contacted owner, Jim Hall, and asked him to come out to look at two projects that we had under consideration. He came out the next day and we discussed the work. He had some ideas to refine our thinking, and at the end of the visit, we agreed on a plan and he offered us a price, which seemed reasonable. Jim and his crew started work about a week later after completing their previous job, and worked diligently for about two weeks until our job was completed. During the course of the work, they sought and accepted our advice on how we wanted the additions to look, and were very responsive to our input and suggestions. At one point, we were so pleased with the look of their work that we expressed an interest in expanding the size of the patio addition, which they did, increasing the overall scope of work by 50%. We were very impressed with the quality of their rock work. They took time to fit the natural rock in a way that looks great and provides a level surface for walking and using tables and chairs on our patio. They are real craftsmen when it comes to their rock work. Jim's involvement from start to finish - as owner of this business - was a key to delivering a product that met and exceeded our expectations and made working with this contractor a pleasure. Well done!

Project took four days, everything that they did with there business was spectacular. I would highly recommend them.

Jim came over and met us to look at the project. He measured it out and we discussed options and pricing on the spot. They (5) showed up the next Monday morning as agreed, ready to rock, and had the old concrete walkway and patio broken out and hauled off by day's end. Jim and his crew worked 9 till 7 almost every day, save one when it rained them out. The end result is stunning and Jim is going to come back by and seal it for us in a few weeks when it's all had time to dry out a little. Will post pics then if I can append this review. We already have more projects for them and highly recommend their services!

Crew was prompt and courteous. Job was done on time. Work area was cleaned after completion. Finished product was outstanding. I would and will use again.

Jim brought in a three man crew and they completed the work in the specified time frame. Looks really nice!

Came out and we discussed some things I wanted done. He measured front/back yards, asked me what I wanted, etc..Told me the approximate price he thought it would be, which I agreed sounded about right. Said he would call/email me with a quote in a few days. It's now exactly one week later & have not received a quote or heard back from him. I've checked my personal email & phone, checked for messages through Angie's List - nothing. Maybe he tried to contact me & for whatever reason I missed it, or he just wasn't interested in the job. I have no idea. Seemed like a nice enough guy, and I chose Down to Earth based on the reviews here. I had another company come out the following Wednesday & had a quote by Friday, so I went with them.

We could not have ask for more. Jim and his crew are fantastic. We have never seen such hard workers. From the beginning to the end removing grass, old bushes, removing an old tree, laying out the design, laying the new plants, laying flagstone for the walkway and entryway--everything was absolutely professional. We have a beautiful front yard to be proud of and have received many compliments from neighbors and passers by. Jim and his crew are the best and we will use again for future projects.

I called and spoke with James and explained I wanted to get two quotes on one side of the fence replaced and have the tree in my back yard trimed. We set appt for 8/6/2014 at 5:30. I never heard from him. I told him I had somewhere to be at 7:00pm that evening. He explained the quotes would only take about 15 mins. I was at my house until 6:30pm. No show. No call. And its now Friday. I was very supprised due to his reviews on Angies List. Oh well, move on to the next one.

No better word than: Perfect! Will call back again!!!!

Everything was PERFECT from start to finish. Jim was on-time (actually early) to provide a quote at a MUCH better rate than other providers. The quality of work is excellent. He and his crew began the project when they said they would and finished on-time. We were especially pleased with how well they worked with the company that installed our irrigation system (Tri County Sprinklers - they were awesome also) Both projects were done at the same time with no issues. I just proved their contact information to each other and they did the rest. The retaining wall they built is beautiful. It matches the flagstone to the house. It is also the same stone used for the flower/plant beds in the front and back. I will be using their services again for compost in March and any other projects in the future.

Jim is a great guy! He and his team worked in the heat of July and really transformed my yard. I was getting texts from my neighbors telling me how impressed they were with the work from Jim and team!

The crew arrived on time and each one was friendly, professional and hard working. When Jim gave me his initial estimate, I told him that I had a budget. Well, he was able to provide service within my budget. His bid came in lower than others with more to offer! They did not cut corners and cleaned up very well. I will hire them again to build a fire pit.
