My fairly large landscape area was in need of a good clean up after the winter season. I called Down-to-Earth Landscaping and spoke to the owner, James Hall. I've used this company the previous two years and have been extremely pleased with their work. Jim came out the day after I called, listened to what I wished to have done, provided me with a few additional thoughts and quoted me a fair price. Jim has several crews working for him, so a crew of two arrived the very next morning and began working. What I really like about this company is that Jim assigns the number of workers to complete the job in one day, two at the most. The landscaped area was cleaned up, some existing plants were cut back to allow for new growth, some plants were relocated, and some new plants were introduced. New mulch was laid down to the entire landscaped area as well to areas around the front and side of the house. As I've already mentioned, this is the third year that I've had Down-to Earth Landscaping care for my yard and as before I am extremely pleased with the work. Great job!
Description of Work: Cleaned up landscaped area in back yard and around front and side of house. Cut back plants and planted new plants in areas requested. Laid down new munch to entire area.

I should mention that this is the second time I have used James' services. The first time I was looking for a shade tolerant grass for my back yard and he suggested Palmetto St. Augustine which has been great. Both times, James was punctual for both the estimate and the work being done. I was not at home either time when the work was actually performed, but he sent me photos to see if all met with my approval and followed up with a text message to ensure my satisfaction and to thank me for my business. I have to say that I have never been used to such a level of professionalism in landscaping services in 20 years of living in San Antonio, so he more than met my expectations, he exceeded them! Well done James and thanks again!!
Description of Work: Re-did my small front yard and added much and compost to the back yard.

When I came home my yard looked beautiful. Everything was done as I had requested. His crew did an excellent job. I will definitely use him in the future and refer him to my friends an family.
Description of Work: James answered my calls in a very timely manner and showed up on the job when he said he would. They cleared all debris from my front and back yards, cut back my bushes, laid new mulch and mowed and gave my front yard a weed treatment.
Jim and his crew did a wonderful job building our three new raised beds. He returned my original call promptly. I mixed up the day of our original appointment and he was very accommodating with rescheduling. The beds exceeded my expectations. They blend in with the existing mortared beds in the yard and they were measured and squared off perfectly. I have already had many compliments from the neighbors about how good they look. Jim was knowledgeable about where to source the best garden soil for the beds. Jim and his crew returned for a second round of work yesterday. They cleared out old beds, weeded and added new planting material. They also laid a flagstone path through the garden. For both jobs, the crew was prompt and good at their work. Jim supervised as needed to keep the work moving and ensure it was being done correctly. The crew cleaned up everything spotlessly after they were done. I felt the price Jim charged for each project was very fair. I could not be more pleased with this company and recommend them to anyone who needs improvements done to their landscape.
Description of Work: Built three mortared chop block raised beds and filled them with appropriate garden soil. Removed unwanted plants, weeded, added garden soil, mulch and compost. Laid a flagstone path through garden.
Jim Hall and his crew did an outstanding job. The crew was very professional, courteous, and competent. They were very receptive to last minute changes that I made without any hesitation. The final product was better than I expected and I will definitely use Down To Earth Landscaping for my future landscaping needs. Thanks guys!
Description of Work: Down to Earth Landscaping removed my Bermuda Tiff grass and replaced it with Zoysia Zeon grass. Additionally, they modified some plant bedding areas with white chop block and added granite rock and a flagstone walkway.
This was a huge undertaking for the crew but they jumped on it daily, even on a Saturday, to meet their deadline of 5 work days, which they accomplished. The patio and walkways were built using rose colored flagstone which turned out beautifully. Their masonry work is professionally done, and actually a work of art!! The best part of this project was that even though I made a few changes in my decisions along the way, Jim was great in going with the flow and making the requested changes without complaining or saying it couldn't be done. I would highly recommend Down to Earth for your next landscape project and would definitely rehire them in the future.
Description of Work: Jim and team were hired to remove and replace a flagstone walkway installed incorrectly by another contractor that was too narrow and crumbling. They extended the new pathway to make a patio along the side of my fence. Also, I had a partial privacy fence and gate replaced , Zoysia Jamir grass removed and replaced with Tiff grass.
After checking Angie's List, I decided to call Down to Earth Landscaping and Lawncare because of their excellent reviews. Jim, the owner, promptly returned my call and scheduled a time to come by to give me an estimate. I told him I already had some river rock that a neighbor had given me that I wanted to incorporate into the design for the front yard and some bushes in the backyard I would like transplanted if possible. Jim came up with a design plan the next day which would allow me to use the existing river rock and three of the existing bushes. I liked his design and scheduled the job. Jim and his team did an excellent job of revamping my yard and making it presentable again. They were punctual, worked hard, removed all the debris when they were finished, and were very competitively priced. I really liked the fact that Jim agreed to work with what I already had on hand and didn't try to pressure me into additional work. I would highly recommend Down to Earth Landscaping and would definitely use them again in the future.
Description of Work: Removed weeds and overgrown brush in backyard and replaced with weed barrier and mulch. Trimmed large bushes and transplanted three small bushes. Created border in front yard and filled with river rock (covering about 1/3 of front yard). Placed river rock under boxwood bushes in front yard and extended existing rock border.

I moved into my house 3 years ago. I was hesitant because of the railroad ties. Honestly I thought they were the ugliest things I had ever seen. During the last 2 years I could see they were slowly rotting away. Be miss DIY I did my research to see if it was something that I could replace myself. NOPE. Not a chance. Those things are hard work. My husband always looking to save moey wanted to do it himself. Until we got the letter from the HOA and restrictions going to be put on the deed. (smiling inside) this forces hubby to look for good qualified people. His favorite place to look for such people lately has been Angie's list. It didn't take him long to find Down To Earth Landscaping. He and I both liked the reviews. Long story short we hired them. These guys are awesome!!! I live on a corner near a busy section and have traffic all day. I love the work. These were on time. I mean like 8:30a.m. sharp every morning!!! Worked til 5:30p.m. When they were finshed for the day you couldn't tell they were there. Trash from lunch and everything gone. The guys were very respectful being that my husband had to be away for the week. All of my questions were answered without hesitation as to what they were doing when I was being nosy. They made sure that I loved the work. I had a cement retainer wall put in and I LOVE IT!! GREAT JOB DOWN TO EARTH LANDSCAPING!!!!! I will be replacing my front lawn and these guys are now my go to guys. If you need landscaping work by professionals that are puntual and make sure that you are satisfied.... HIRE Down to Earth. If i was rich they would have had a nice tip from me.

Jim had recently down a fairly large landscape project for us which included building a stone patio. We absolutely love the patio but after a recent rain we found water was pooling on the patio where it butts up to the support lumber of the deck. I called Jim to see if he could recommend any actions I could take to remedy this and was very happy when he said he would be over to take a look and see what could be done. While Jim was examining things I asked if he could replace the old wooden step from the deck to the patio with a stone step. Jim didn't bat an eye and said of course. The price was awesome and knowing first hand the work he and his crew do I was eager to get it done. A few days later Jim and one of his crew arrived and demo'ed the old step. Filled in the hole and built a step that perfectly matches the patio. Then they decided that the best fix for the ponding water was to drill holes in the deck support 2 x 6's and insert pvc pipe to drain the water under the deck and away from the base of the patio. Well it rained pretty good today, 2/26/16, and the fix worked great. I can't speak more highly of this company. They do fantastic work and are very reasonably priced. Thanks Jim for another great job.

Initial contact was made through Angie?s List ?Schedule Now? form online. I asked them for an estimate on grass repair. Surprisingly I got a call back within a few hours of having sent the message. Jim Hall was articulate and professional; we discussed my general needs and set up for a meeting the next day. He called me the next morning about ½ hour before our scheduled time to ask if it was ok to be a little late, as his other appointment was taking longer than expected. This simple courtesy was much appreciated. After viewing my property and discussing the overall project and possible costs, we decided to concentrate on the lawn repair. He spent about 15 minutes measuring and walking the property (almost 1 acre, terraced) and informed me of the inclusions and costs he had estimated. The job included 8 pallets of Palmetto St Augustine grass, to help with the fact that much of the yard is shaded by oaks, and the Raleigh version being used was not as good in the shade. They would skim off existing grass/weeds in dead areas, and tiller the ground and mix in some compost prior to putting down new grass. They would also do a top cover of compost for the entire grass area in the yard which would be around 13,000 sq feet. After recovering from ?sticker shock? when he first gave me the estimate pricing, I considered the amount of work required and decided to go ahead. I knew that it had taken the wife and me 3 days to breakup and tiller the ground, to put down one pallet of grass, and spread a layer of compost/topping so the math said that it?d take us 24 days to do this job, as I'm 68 years old retired remodeler this seemed reasonable. Jim and his crew showed up on time for the first day of work (around 9:30). Every member of the crew was friendly and willing to accept input from me, or to pass it onto Jim who was there most of the time, working with the crew. He?d leave to get grass or compost and did just as much as the others. His estimate had been that It would take 3 days, but as it worked out it took only 2.5. The ground was very packed, and the tiller work was most likely more than they expected. It also required an additional ½ pallet of grass, and I don?t know how many yards of compost topping, but each load, his trailer was loaded to the max. I was very impressed with the politeness and care take by him and his crew. Their demeanor and behavior was exemplary and gave neither me nor my wife any cause for concern. The areas around the yard were cleaned up, the driveway etc were blown off and looked better than when they arrived. I most definitely will use them again in the coming months to trim my trees, just as soon as I can pay off the credit card bill for this work. I highly recommend Jim and D2EL&LC to any others contemplating landscaping or yard work. Based on photos here on Angie?s List, it looks as though the stone work and other services they offer are just as good.
Description of Work: Job Estimate Information: For all material, labor, delivery, and installation. I had waited until the fall to have some landscape issues taken care of, on my property. I called a few places and never received a call back. I called Down to Earth and spoke with Jim, and he agreed to come to my house and speak with me. I needed to have bushes removed, two trees removed and replaced, tree rings, flower bed masonry and metal edging of property line. He arrived on time and we discussed what I wanted done. A date was set to start the work, but I was lucky, as he had a delay on another job and could do mine sooner, then originally agreed upon. Jim and his crew arrived on time, and the work got started. The quality of the masonry work surpassed my expectations. He was able to match the stone work, with the stone on the front of the house. It matches so well; you would think it was done when the house was built. I have had so many homeowners in the community stop by and ask who did the masonry work. The crew is very professional, and addressed any concerns I had during the project. If you want quality work, this is the company for that. They clean everything up, prior to the final walk thru. I would definitely hire Down to Earth for future projects.

We agreed upon a price, scheduled the work to begin and end. Jim Hall, the owner, followed up with me the day before, began and ended on time. The properties were left in clean condition, and he sent me photos of the finished work. I plan on scheduling work with him on another property soon. You will be pleased with his work and his professionalism. His crew was also courteous.
Description of Work: Xeriscaped two rental townhouses to create low maintenance grounds.
The crew was competent, friendly and accommodating and they did not leave a mess behind. Had I known about the wide range of services Jim and his crew can perform, I would have used them for the whole project!
Description of Work: Down to Earth completed the final phase of a patio remodel - leveled the ground, installed a retaining wall, flagstone, river rocks and mulch. Also covered existing concrete porch with flagstone.
Jim Hall, owner of Down to Earth, came to our home on a Monday 12/7/15 to discuss what we wanted done. He measured our yard and gave us a price. We agreed to the price and scheduled work to begin Monday 12/14/15. Jim called the next day and said another job had been pushed back and would we be available to start the job that Thursday 12/10/15. Absolutely. We were ready and eager to get this project going. His crew showed up that Thursday and got started. They were prompt, courteous and did the "prep work" that day. Over the next 3 business days they hauled numerous loads of 2" rock into our backyard and spread it out; installed a beautiful flagstone patio and laid 3 flagstone pathways. The final product exceeded our expectations and made us wonder why we had not done this a long time ago. The workmanship and professionalism displayed by this crew was exceptional. This company has earned and deserves every positive review written. Our backyard has been transformed into a "hardscape" designed to conserve water and look beautiful at the same time. We would highly recommend "Down to Earth" to anyone! AND we look forward to working with them again on our next project!

The project went very well. Jim Hall and his four-man crew arrived at the 12:30 pm scheduled time. They removed all the old vegetation and filled in the area with dirt and laid down weed barrier before covering the areas with river rock in strategic locations. Also replaced green metal borders with brick work. The crew finished four hours later but not before cleaning up the area and watering the new plants. My wife and I were very satisfied with the results. Jim did have to come back the next day and arrived at the time he promised to do some further planting of two agapanthas. He mentioned not to get paid until the work was complete. He did not request any partial payment up front but rather requested payment after the job was complete. This was refreshing to hear since most of the contractors I've dealt with request partial payment up front. I would definitely use Down to Earth Landscaping again.

James was very punctual and even early when he arrived to provide an estimate. His estimate was right in the target range that I had come up with assuming that I was purchasing the materials to have delivered and the pricing that I came up with for labor. I had previously contracted with another company that barely started and did not finish the job. I was feeling skeptical about contractors at this point, but was unable to finish the job myself under my time constraint. Day of the work James and his team showed up on time early this morning and began work by spreading dirt to level out a drop off on a patio that I felt was unsafe. James returned with materials for the river rock garden and while his team moved through placing the rock he moved on to get the load of mulch. Once James returned with the mulch, his team worked like clock work finishing the mulch bed and laid the grass. Each time I checked outside, I did not see anyone resting or slacking. They came to do a job and completed it in a timely fashion. After the trouble I have had with my past landscape contractor, I admit I was hesitant on hiring again, but James proved that there are still good people in the world and are not out to try and take advantage. I would recommend James to anyone. Thanks James and appreciate your promptness in meeting my deadline and the level of effort you and your guys put in. The yard looks fantastic. I will continue to use James on future projects.

John was easy to work with. He was punctual, professional, talented at landscaping and reliable. He responded to may calls within 24 hours. He was patient and understanding when it took so long for my HOA to approve rehab. plans for the front yard. Once the project started John and his crew were here early and worked steadily for 2 days to complete the job. John always checked with me for the placement of new plants. I liked that very much. I was comfortable working with ideas and sketches instead of drawn out specific plans. John was always flexible and let me work within our plan to make changes as needed for plants and design. A big thank you to John Hall and his Crew.

From start to finish Jim was very professional and fair priced. He always returned my calls and gave me room and time to decide on the price and jobs to be done. Of all the Angie's List contractor I have used or contacted Jim and Down To Earth Landscaping are head and shoulders above them. I have dealt with more than 9 other contractors because we are in the process of upgrading our 1966 home. Not only did Jim and his crew do a beautiful job but everyday when they finished they cleaned up so you could not tell they had been their all day working. Their work and pride in their work shows. We are extremely happy with their work. The yard looks beautiful the grass is already rooting and green. Their landscaping is also beautiful. I have had the neighbors stop by and tell me what an improvement the is in the yard and thank me for caring,of course I told them who did the work Down To Earth Landscaping ,Jim is a hands on guy and has a Great crew that will treat you right and do a job that will be very satisfying.

Jim met with me and gave an estimate, showed up and he and his crew did everything I asked and I only told him once......I never write reviews and if I could fill up this whole page with praises I would. They were here promptly, worked hard, completed our project, and cleaned up before they left. Very nice work that turned out even better than I had imagined! We had told him what we needed and he designed it all. We are very happy with the finished product. He matched our existing stone work perfectly. Reasonable rates for the quality of work. We LOVE it!! We plan on using this company again for future work.

This company was only 2 of the 5 companies contacted to come to my house to provide me with a quote, and he was the first company to respond. His quote was also the best out of the two provided to us. While our job was small in comparison to most landscape jobs, his group handled it with professionalism and did exactly what I asked them to do. They arrived on time and they finished when they said they'd be finished, they cleaned up their work area as well. I am very happy with the outcome and highly recommend Down to Earth to anyone with any landscape job, large or small.

Jim and his crew were great to work with! He came to us and LISTENED to what we wanted! After having a few other landscapers TELL us what they were going to do, this was refreshing! Down to Earth Landscaping came the following Wednesday and by this Friday morning our yard looked fresh, modern, clean and had the curb appeal we were looking for, all within our budget! Jim and crew were friendly and easy to work with! We will be using them again soon to give our backyard the TLC it needs! Thank you guys again!
