Tony was quick to come over and very thorough in his evaluation of the problems. He asked appropriate questions and even brought up a couple of issues that we had overlooked. His estimate was fair and back in a day or two. He wanted to know whether we felt that anything was urgent before he gave us a start time. We didn't, therefore he gave us a tenative date for our work. He had one of his men, Arnold, work on our project, but supervised and checked on things multiple times per day. Arnold was meticulous, clean, neat, courteous, and exceptionally well qualified. He kept us informed throughout the project. We were blown away by the quality of his work. One part required him to match and feather in a faux wall that was 15 years old. He worked on it all day with multiple combinations, but wasn't satisfied. The next morning he was back with a smile and a new idea that blended perfectly. He was terrific. My wife and I couldn't have been more pleased with the work, Tony, and his crew. We already have another project for him.

Overall we received a very good paint job with a few minor exceptions. They paid great attention to the details but I feel the pre-finished molding should have been primed with "kilz" to get better paint adhesion. The timeline was way off from what was agreed to but they stayed steadily on the job until it was finished. Tony went above & beyond on several issues which was greatly appreciated. They came back promptly for the touch ups. We will be using this company again in the future & would recommend them for any type of work.

Promptly returned my call, showed up when he said he would, communicated with me every step of the way, did excellent work on my long list of various projects, did quality work, awesome can-do-anything attitude, very pleasant to work with, committed to excellence, great work ethic
Description of Work: Landscaping, cut down a tree, replaced steps on deck, carpentry work
Tony maintained excellent communication with me throughout the job. He answers texts promptly. He uses quality materials and seemed to keep my best interest in mind during all the work. The crew is polite, professional, and trustworthy.
Description of Work: I had a long list of assorted jobs. My house was built in nineteen sixty-something so a few things needed repair. I had two instances of rotted floors due to water getting under the house and staying there. I could not be home the whole time to monitor the progress so I had to trust the crew to do a good job. I was not disappointed. The crew was very attentive to detail and followed my instructions exactly. This job involved removing rotted wood, replacing it with new treated joists and sub-floor, and putting down new padding and carpet. They did a thorough job, used top quality materials, and cleaned up meticulously. To keep the water out for good, the crew is installing a massive french drain across the driveway. Other work at the house included gutter cleaning, power washing, deck sealing and replacing boards where needed, and replacing outdoor carpet on a porch.

I believe reviews are best when the context of the job and the reviewer are given, so I'll start there. I know carpentry very well. Ran a framing/finish crew in the early 90s and built many of Tyler's nicest and biggest homes during that time (too many to count). I also grew up around the residential home building industry in Tyler, though I haven't swung a hammer in many years. The point is that I know how to do it myself, and the difference between "good", "bad" and "lazy", and have high expectations based on experience. I actually had replaced about 3/4 of the cornice/fascia board on the front of my house before calling Tony, but realized I just don't have time to do that kind of thing myself any longer. However, I always feel nervous that whoever I hire will not live up to my expectations. The reviews here, and a strong desire to stay out of trouble with my wife, led me to bite the bullet and call Tony...I cannot adequately express how impressed I am!!! My house needed painting 7-8 years ago but I kept putting it off. I knew the degraded paint was causing a lot of the outside trim to be damaged, but my procrastination persisted way too long. Finding someone who could both do a high quality paint job, who was fast but meticulous, and still have the know how and resources to replace a lot of the cornice and fascia was my challenge. It is difficult to find a contractor that has the ability to "do it all". Tony assured me right from the beginning that he could handle any need, and he wasn't exaggerating at all. Painting is his specialty, and the end result definitely shows that. But, what become evident quickly was that all of his other work is superior too! The finished paint work is simply outstanding. You would never know my old house was in such bad shape when he started. Really smooth, really detailed, and really clean. After all of these years of stressing over finding a good contractor that I can call for any job, I finally found one and he blows past all of my expectations. Tony is a great guy and really accommodating of my numerous text messages and questions. You will not be disappointed with his work and he will do whatever it takes to make it the way you want. He is very busy, so be prepared for that. This is just an indication of how good he is. People seek him out and he has a great reputation. I highly recommend Tony and his crews for any work you need done. He is just fantastic and I am very fortunate to have chosen him. Thank you Tony!!

Before I begin on the problems I had with this contractor, I will state that the work he DID do for me ? a new metal roof on my carport, a new surface on my deck and one other small project ? were done well. They look nice and I am happy with those. That is the only reason I am grading Mr. Ratliff with a D instead of an F. Mr. Ratliff knew that I traveled a lot and was home for short periods of time. He indicated at the beginning that he would work with my schedule. He accomplished the above-mentioned projects while I was gone since they were outside and I did not need to be home for them to get done. I made sure to contact him via text message when I was going to be home so he could arrange to come out and work on some of the inside projects. But EVERY time I was home, there would be some excuse as to why he could not come out; often he would just text and say he wasn?t coming without a reason given. This was frustrating because with my long absences from home, it just protracts the completion of the projects. There was one small project ? fixing a cinder block support at the back of the house ? which he said his workers would get to in May that still remains undone. They already did work underneath the house in the back and should have fixed it then. His workers had left piles of debris and trash in various locations at my place (this includes paper towels and tamale wrappers ? food items that would attract ants and other bugs near the house.) I had initially told him about these construction remains in April and requested that his workers pick it up and haul it off, as they should have from the beginning. Consequently, these piles of debris and trash were still here to be seen by prospective buyers who have looked at the house. By June 30, when I finally parted ways with Mr. Ratliff, the piles of debris and trash are STILL on my property (see attached pictures; all pictures taken on June 30, 2014). Now I will have to have pay another contractor a little extra to haul off the debris and trash Mr. Ratliff?s workers left behind and have them use a magnet or metal detector to make sure all the nails are found. Also, based on our signed contract, he had claimed he could get all the materials for all my projects for a certain amount. But he was over that amount by $100 with only the three projects I mentioned in the first paragraph. I still had one more major project and several small ones to accomplish. So, I texted Mr. Ratliff and simply asked to see the receipts for the materials he had already bought. He wrote back a very long, catty, sarcastic text message to me that was extremely unprofessional. I considered posting it here in the review but decided not to. It was then that I decided I would start over searching for another contractor to complete my projects ? preferably one more reliable and professional in dealing with clients. Mr. Ratliff might counter my review with comments about how I do not know how contractors work - buying items out of their own pocket and then just reimbursing themselves with the client's money. He made this very clear in his degrading text message reply. To that I would say: Even if the receipt belongs to the contractor because they paid for the items personally, I do not see why the contractor cannot be transparent enough to still show the receipts to the client if they ask. Or make a copy and highlight the particular items that were used on that clients' projects.
Description of Work: Contracted with provider to do 3 major projects outside the house and several minor projects inside the house. Completed projects include 2 of the major projects (new metal roof on my large carport and a new surface for my deck) and one minor project (replacing insulation under one part of my pier-and-beam house and putting up chicken wire to hold it in place). The 3rd major outside project and all of the inside projects never got done.

Response from Ratliff Painting & Repair
This job started out just fine. We were able to do some outside work because it didn’t require the customer to be home. She did travel a lot and was not home during the course of the work that was done. As the job progressed, I took pictures of the repairs and texted them to her. She said she really enjoyed getting the pictures of the progress and always commented back with how great and awesome everything looked. We were supposed to powerwash and seal her log home but the pump to her water was broken, so we were unable to do this. I offered to have one of my subcontractors fix it, but she declined that offer and said she would do that herself when she was home. The pump was never repaired and so we never got to do the powerwashing. Scheduling problems arose on both sides of this deal. She would text me dates that she was going to be home and I would arrange my schedule to be available those dates (I have several jobs going on at one time). Days before she was due to come in, she would text me letting me know she wasn’t coming in afterall. This happened on several occasions and became very frustrating for me and the guys who work for me. Her claims that I said I wasn’t coming out to work and never offered reasons why is simply untrue. There were definitely instances in which I would not make it, but I always gave explanations, and those instances involved dates that had already been changed around by the homeowner. I did the very best I could to stay in constant communication with her and to be flexible with her ever-changing schedule. Regarding the trash and debris – Yes, some of my workers left some trash there and I chewed them out for it. That is always unacceptable. I made her aware of this as well. I offered to send them out to pick it up and she said it would be fine to just wait and do it when we came back out to work on the inside jobs once she was home. She did not want to have to pay for my guys’ travel time out there. I assured her there would be no charge for that, but she insisted we could just pick it up once we started another project. At the time of her review, we haven’t been back out to her home to start any new jobs. Regarding the nails – After replacing the metal on the pole barn roof, we picked up TWO 5-gallon buckets of nails. It is possible that some were missed as there were a lot of leaves and pine straw on the ground. This was certainly not an issue of neglect. I regret that any nails were overlooked. Regarding the home being for sale - I was never told the house was going to be for sale or that people would be coming out to look at it. I would have gone out immediately myself and picked up the trash and debris piles had I known this beforehand. Regarding the materials budget – Being $100 over the estimated materials is fairly reasonable in my opinion, especially considering the work done to this point was about $8000 worth. The bulk of the work had already been completed. I don’t know any contractor who gives his receipts to homeowners. If the initial agreement is for me to provide materials, then receipts are mine. That means it is my job to compare prices, check for items in stock, run to and from the home improvement stores and other parts stores gathering materials and ensuring all of the correct items are purchased. My accountant files those receipts away and I am not required to pull all that back up for homeowners. Sometimes, homeowners choose to purchase materials themselves, thus owning the receipts. That also means they do all the legwork to acquire the materials. Before that last communication between us the last week of June, everything had been fine and cordial. She again texted and said she was coming in and could I possibly go ahead with powerwashing the house. I reminded her the well pump was out and she said she had forgotten about that. She then went into how we were $100 over budget and wanted to see all receipts. That day just happened to be a day I was struggling with an awful migraine headache (that lasted 7 days and ended with an MRI and two doctor visits). I should have waited a while and not responded, but I didn’t. I will agree my response was sarcastic, but I do not believe it was demeaning or degrading. I think a lot of homeowners do not fully understand the stress and strain that contractors go through to pull all parts of a job together – multiple jobs at once actually. I was trying to let her know that being perfectly on budget is rare and that gathering all the correct materials is a task, but that she could take that portion of the job over herself if she wanted to. She did tell me she was going to use someone else and I did tell her I was sorry and explained about the migraine. There are certainly things I wish I had done differently looking back on this job and my interaction with the homeowner. I am sorry for any inconvenience this caused her.

Tony was a pleasure to work with. He was very knowledgable about carpentry and got to work quickly. The weather didn't cooperate and it played h*** with my schedule. After the rain, Tony and his guys came out and got right to work, the majority of the carpentry work was completed in a few days. The only hang up was the local building supply didn't keep a 2x12x20' pice of redwood in stock, not Tony's fault. The house being a two story construction Tony got his guys to start painting right away and by the time they got to the lower level they had the lumber to complete the job without hiccup. I also had a few cabinet drawers that were starting to come apart as is expected in a 30 year old house. Repairing the drawers was a lot cheaper than replacing. Being a do it yourselfer I had high expectation and Tony delivered. The end product was excellent and I would use Tony again for any repair job no matter the size.

The work turned out great. We were very happy with the work that they did. They had to make some repairs to the soffit, and the exterior of our home where the wood had rotted out, and they replaced the wood as well as correcting the area where water was getting in, and painted it as well. We were happy with their work, and pleased with the price.

We contracted with Tony and his team to help turn an empty room in our small older house into a 2nd bathroom off the master bedroom. The space was a 10' square room with simple drywall and concrete slab floors. We had estimates from a couple other providers to perform the work and were looking at around 30K for the whole thing....Tony and his group came in with an estimate for just 13K. He was the only one who found a good way to work within our budget by suggesting the platform setup (rather than the costlier drilling through the slab to get to the lines), an idea which on paper we were sketchy on....once the platform was in place we loved it! Although various scheduling issues extended the timeline on the project, Tony was always very quick to communicate with us any issues or variances to plan. Both the carpenters, plumbers and electricians who came out to perform the services were nice, friendly and on time. We would recommend Ratliff to anyone looking to do remodel work on any aspect of their home
Description of Work: Built a new bathroom in an empty room of house. Constructed a platform to run plumbing, set up a new water heater, ran water supply & drain lines for same. Connected lines to city water & sewer. Set up framing for toilet area and 2-person walk in shower stall. Removed 2 doors and expanded to 36" walkway area. Removed old lighting fixtures and installed new ones. Replaced out of code electrical box with new central exterior unit. Repaired and repainted old areas post install and removal.

I had a little sheetrock accident and needed it fixed immediately. I called Tony and he arrived within 15 minutes to evaluate the situation. He had both areas of damaged sheetrock repaired and repainted within approx. 5 hours of my call to him. It looks good as new! You cannot tell there was any damage or repair work done at all. Excellent work at top speed! I was very impressed and appreciative. I was really in a bind and he came through for me. I have used Tony for several indoor and outdoor home repairs over the last few months and I have been pleased everytime. I highly recommend him for any type of home repair!

The initial meeting and plan started out great and we came up with a plan for the project. We had a slight delay because of problem with the arrival of the microwave. The initial plan was to leave an open area over the unit which did change as the work proceeded, but it was agreed upon by both sides. The greatest difficulty was that the owner did none of the actual work. He schedules various people who all appear to be independent specialists to install, paint, build, etc. Repeatedly we were told someone would be coming to do a certain job, and then no one would arrive, and no call to apologize, or reschedule. This created quite a difficult situation as one of the family members has several health issues and it is a lot a scheduling to make sure they are covered to arrange for the person coming in. After multiple times of having this happen we spoke with the owner at length to get him to understand we needed him to both follow through with what we were being promised when someone was to arrive and we needed the job completed. He indicated he understood and would be in touch to come out by the end of the week. After yet another 2 weeks, we finally had had enough and began making arrangements to have someone else come in and complete the job. That finally seemed to do the trick to get his company to come out and finish the job. The individuals who came out were all very professional and did a good job. It was just a matter of getting people to show up.
Description of Work: This company was to install a microwave/vent hood in the kitchen and then finish the space over the unit.

First let me say I was working with a deadline. Mr. Ratliff's company completed the job before the deadline! Mr. Ratliff met with me and went through the house to see what I wanted done. He discussed what the job would entail and gave me a written estimate. A deposit of half the estimate was paid before the work began. I chose the colors and Mr. Ratliff purchased them. The work was done in a timely manner. The workers arrived on time and worked the whole time they were here. The men were considerate, courteous, and above all completely trustworthy. I gave them the key to my house and most days they worked in my absence. I did not lock up or hide any of my belongings and nothing was ever disturbed. When the job was finished they cleaned up and even swept up. I am delighted with the work Mr. Ratliff's company did and certainly would hire them again! I highly recommend them.

It was mostly positive. They completed the job in four and half months. It wasn't perfect. The main problem that I had was them telling me it was going to take two months and it took four and a half. I think that's pretty common with contractors. They tell you that so they'll get the contract. That was the only thing. It just took a lot longer. They weren't working everyday, so I don't know what they were doing. If they were there everyday working, then you'd understand. When you don't see them for a week or two, then you wonder what's going on. That was my big complaint. It was a really nice guy. I would use them again but I would plan for more time.

He called me one day and asked for an estimate. As with all homeowners, I asked him where he got my name from. I ask everyone that so that I know which form of advertising is bringing in business. Sometimes people are referred by former customers and I like to know this as well. He would not tell me where he got my name and said he would tell me once I came out to his house. He told me any day was good except Tuesday. I told him I didn't know what day I would come but that I would call first. I called twice but never got an answer. After two attempts to reach him, coupled with the odd way he dealt with a simple question, I felt unsettled about his intentions.

The whole thing turned into an expensive, frustrating experience for my wife and I. Tony comes on like a real professional, then shows up the next day and drops off one poor little Hispanic gentleman to do all the work alone. We really felt bad for Tony's worker and brought him water and mosquito repellent. It was a pretty sad affair. Then two days later, Tony shows up with his hand out, wanting his money. My wife pointed out, to Tony an area under the eve that his man had missed completely and Tony, very rudely said well that's the way it goes sometimes. It was a Friday late afternoon and Tony was only there for his easy money. The reason I contacted Tony in the first place was for ceramic tile repair. He kept trying to push me off to a weekend "bum's rush" and I wasn't about to pay for any more poor workmanship. I had to find another contractor to do the ceramic work. I had to finish the power washing myself. I see others have had better luck with this guy. Guess I got Tony on a bad day ...
Description of Work: Tony was originally hired to repair several loose ceramic tiles in my home but Tony;s subcontractor was always busy on more important jobs. In the mean time, I had him power-wash the house and deck plus do a little touch up painting.

First of all, I am a real professional and have plenty of years of experience and reviews to prove that. Secondly, the "worker" referred to here is far from a "poor little Hispanic gentleman." Let's be careful not to profile here. That particular worker of mine has worked for me for 8 years. He is very well paid. He makes more in a year than my wife made as a public school teacher. He has stayed with me as long as he has because I treat him (and all of my subs and workers) very well. All of my workers/subs are responsible for bringing their own basic supplies to a job, including water if they choose. What a nice thing that this homeowner provided him with water and mosquito spray! The fact that he had none, however, is no reflection on me or my quality of work. That particular worker is a very experienced and capable 50-year-old man. Power washing a house is not a 2 man job. Only one man can run a pressure washing machine. There was no reason to have any more men on this job. The first day we were on this job, I gave him the contract to sign so we could get started. The pen he was using was not working, so he threw it across the garage so hard that he lost his balance and almost fell down. As he was throwing it, he angrily said, "this m****r f*****g pen!" I offered him my pen but he said he had his own in the house. He seemed to be quite an angry person and a little hot-headed, and I immediately questioned whether working for him was going to be a good idea or not. I went ahead and did so, but he was rude to both my worker and myself on several occasions. It got to where I dreaded even talking to him because he was always complaining about something and asking me to throw stuff in for free. We did fix the lose tile in the house, power washed the house and did some touch-up painting. After completing the job, I got a call saying we had missed a spot on one of the eaves. I would never have responded to his wife the way he claims in his review. Customer satisfaction is CRUCIAL in my profession. Mistakes do happen, even to the best of us. I apologized for this and said we would get back out there and have it fixed. He said not to bother and that he would just rip me up and down on Angie's List as soon as he had time. I am sorry this customer had a bad experience. I almost never have a hard time working well with homeowners. I am an easy-going guy, dedicated to doing a good job, and deal fairly with my workers and homeowners alike.

Went very well. We had plumbers, cabinet maker, tilers, painters and all around handy men. We love working with Tony and trust him completely. His guys are all so nice.....they became like family! The tile layer was especially excellent. They all tried hard to please me and were very accommodating. I felt completely comfortable leaving them in the house. The work was very good and professional. I appreciated that I felt the workers cared about taking care of my house, tried not to damage anything, and they cleaned up after themselves!!! They also did careful prep work to protect the home. Tony has done work for us for years and always does a great job. He takes pride in doing good work and having happy customers. I recommend him to all my friends.
