This is a couple with a nice business they run. We left a message for them and they returned our call on a following day. They said they would be in the area and since they were passing by they could take a quick look and there would be no charge if no cleaning was needed. We knew it needed cleaning and also could not meet that day, so we opted for the full service, which is $75 for inspection or total $135 for cleaning if needed after inspection. As we expected the cleaning was needed (ours was in stage three, just before crystallization begins according to Top Hat). Before I couldn't even open it up without getting showered with soot, afterward very clean. Also, a LOT of tips were shared about how to operate and some simple maintenance that might come up, like a small hairline crack that needed watching, and could be patched with some home depot fireplace caulk if it got worse. The service visit went very well.

got their name from angie's list. called them on a saturday and received a call back on Monday. I wish they were open on weekends, but it seemed there were not any companies available on the weekend. They had an appointment available Friday. A couple arrived to service the chimney, 15 min early. They were quick and very knowledgeable. Our chimney didn't need to be cleaned and they told us we were ready to go. They also recommended we paint the back of the chimney space before putting in our gas fireplace set up. helpful advice!

They fixed the original problem and then after they left there still seemed to be a problem. I called them back and they came free of charge and corrected the additional issue with the vent. I was very impressed because this second issue was not their responsibility it was unrelated.

I had never used the wood burning fireplace in a home I recently purchased and wanted it looked over to see if it needed to be cleaned. A quick inspection from Top Hat made me feel better that it was in good shape, and they were able to give me some good information about using the fireplace. They also cleaned my dryer vents, and my dryer is working much better. Top Hat was punctual, professional, and they are both such nice people. Would use again, and recommend.

I moved into a house and wanted to make sure the fireplace was safe to use, I called Top Hat b/c of the reviews on Angie's List and has long-time experience in the business. Kenneth and his wife both came over and gave me a "Fireplace 101" lesson since I had questions about using a gas vs wood burning fireplace. It was set up w/ gas logs but I wanted to weigh the pros/cons with wood burning. They were both great with all kinds of information I didn't know about regarding functionality, care, heat enhancement, safety and even minor repair. I grew up with a fireplace and didn't know about the things they educated me on! He inspected it inside and out, and found one minor issue (opening between bricks inside of fireplace due to movement of house). What I especially appreciated about his service was that it was clear he was not going to try and sell me on him doing work that was not needed, or that we could easily do on our own. He told us we could go to a home improvement store and buy tube of special caulking to fill ourselves. He recommended that we down the road would need some exterior mortar repair for aesthetics only, but said we were fine for now. Also a similar issue with the exterior crown of the fireplace. Apart from that, he and his wife were friendly, professional and just real nice folks. It's a pleasure to find service oriented people like this -- and all thanks to Angie's List!

Top Hat responded to my call within 24 hours and set up an appointment to come clean the chimney on my new home. The house is new to me, but built in 1975, and the inspector recommended a chimney cleaning after telling me the chimney was filled with creosote. Top Hat looked at my chimney and told me that the chimney itself didn't need cleaning because we had a raccoon living in there that had kept it pretty clean. Little did I know, raccoons are a protected species in TX now and the owners of Top Hat would have to be licensed to trap it. They gave us some tips on how to get rid of the raccoon and told us to call them after we get him out so they can come back and complete the cleaning. While here on the first visit, they also fixed a disconnected dryer vent in the attic. They spent at least an hour and a half trying to help us scare the raccoon out (unsuccessfully), fixing the dryer vent, and explaining to us the anatomy of a chimney and where the raccoon is hiding as well as inspecting the damage moisture does to a chimney after years with no cap. They explained the differences between the chimney caps we could get at Home Depot/Lowes and the ones they install, and told us about the 6 year rust warranty the brand they sell carries which helped us decide between trying to install a cap ourselves or have them install one. They told us how to do the cosmetic repairs we might want to do and what products to use from a home improvement store. They did not request a payment at the first visit and instead told us they would bill us when the whole job was completed. They cleaned up the dust created from opening and closing the damper to scare the raccoon. We got on the roof that night and were able to put a metal grate over the chimney while the raccoon was out. I called them back on Saturday to let them know. Amy called me on Monday to set up another appointment to come back. They returned on Thursday to clean out the firebox, clean the area where the raccoon was living, oil the damper, and install the chimney cap. Both of the owners were very nice, respectful, and professional. I could tell they knew what they were doing and I was quite happy that they did not recommend paying them for unnecessary repairs (cosmetic) or a full chimney cleaning since the raccoon had kept it pretty clean. I think the value we got for the price was good (partial chimney cleaning, dryer vent connection repair, and installation of a chimney cap for about $250). I felt that they were honest and friendly and will definitely use them again!

The service was excellent. They were on time and even though I had called to have my chimney cleaned they told me that it did not need cleaning for several more years. So I have to add they were very honest. After they cleaned my dryer vent they replaced the dryer and made sure the surroundings were very clean. They took the time to explain how to tell when my vent needed cleaning again and even wrote it down for me. The price was very reasonable and as quoted with my Angie's List discount. I highly recommend this couple and will use them again.

They were very punctual. In fact, I was 7 minutes late getting home from work, and they were waiting on me. They went up on the roof and inspected the chimney and surrounding flashing. Kenneth also went out of his way to let me know what my roof looked like, overall, since he was up there. Turns out, I didn't have a chimney cap, so he remedied that. Inside, they very carefully covered the fireplace so that no dust would come out, into the house, and then thoroughly cleaned and inspected the firebox, flue, damper, etc. Oiled the damper (which is sorely needed) and checked the gas. They took the time to teach me to properly and safely use the gas, talked to me about how to make a good fire, and where to get good wood. Not that I don't know these things, but I really felt like they wanted to make sure I was getting the most out of my fireplace, as possible. Very personable, caring folks! I'll definitely be bringing them back!

The company was prompt and communicated with me by both e-mail and phone. I needed to reschedule once and they were very understanding about that. They showed up right on time and performed the work quickly. They explained what they were doing and also showed me some areas of rust on the chimney cap that I need to monitor over the next few years. They left the area clean and swept. The work was performed by the owners of the company (Kim and Ken, I believe). They were pleasant to chat with and gave me information on caring for the fireplace and sources of quality firewood.

My experience was good from the time I called the office. The office was friendly and scheduled me very quickly. A friend met them at my house and she said they were punctual, courteous, efficient and friendly -- and honest, they found $5 behind my dryer.. They explained how I can tell if the dryer vent is getting clogged in future, which I did not know,. I am very happy with the service. A few years ago I had someone else do this same service; they were adequate but charged me more than this and did not do such a fine job. Also with two people coming I think the job gets done much faster. I am very pleased with the service and the price.

I would consider using this company in the future if they contacted me, or actually answered their phone and email.

Kenny and his wife came to my house on time. They climbed up on the roof to inspect the chimney and told me exactly what needed to be done, how long it would take, and what products they would use. They recommended cleaning the chimney because there was an odor that smelled like wet ashes, but he knew exactly why and where it needed to be cleaned. He also noticed that my dryer was not vented to code and added that to his estimate. They came back the following week and did all the work quickly and professionally. The charges were exactly what the estimate was. I would definitely recommend them and would use them again.

This company believes in old-fashioned service. The phone was answered promptly and I was able to schedule quickly. They were on time and, once here, explained everything they were doing. They pointed out a problem with the vent hose. They also told me that, given the configuration of our vent and the number of people in our house that we shouldn't have to repeat the service for quite some time. (Another vendor had said I should do it every year.) I would definitely use them again for any of the services they perform.

Mr. and Mrs. Fredenburg responded promptly; we had to reschedule a couple of times due to the sudden rainy/icy weather, but they kept in touch and were quite flexible. Work was done quickly. Additionally, Mr. Fredenburg pointed out some problems that he had noticed with my roof plumbing vents (which need to be addressed before it rains!) Cheerful and professional.

Fit me in very quickly. Good work. Mix up with Angie's List discount and promptly fixed the issue.

Very professional, just the facts. They actually came out of their normal service area to service us. Cost would have been less if we had been closer.

Not long after moving into a new (old) house, we lit the gas log fireplace and shortly thereafter detected a gas odor in the house. I thought there must be a leak somewhere and so had the gas line checked first by a plumber, but there was no leak. The plumber advised calling a fireplace specialist. I left a message for Top Hat and the returned my call the next day. They offered a service call but also gave me some tips on things I could look for if I first wanted to solve the problem on my own. I opted to schedule an appointment. An opening in their schedule coincided with mine so they were able to come out that very same day. The proprietor and his wife rolled up to my house at the time scheduled and quickly detected the source of the problem. Whomever installed the gas logs had placed them incorrectly, allowing one of the logs to cover an opening in the pipe located under the fireplace grate. With that problem solved, he gave the fireplace and chimney a full inspection and made a couple adjustments. The price charged was the price for a basic service call.

When we bought our house, the inspector said that the fireplace had flue cracks. Top Hat came out, inspected and told us the fireplace was fine. The only defect it had was the cap was breaking up and leaking. Since we do a lot of out own repairs, they left detailed instructions on how to fix it. In addition, even though we are outside their normal service area, they made an exception and came out anyway.

Everything went very well. They showed up on time and did everything thoroughly and professionally. Both folks were very friendly and went out of their way to explain things about my fireplace to me, even though they said the pipe was clean and the gas connection and gas log were in good shape and didn't need any work. They did a good job cleaning out my dryer vent, and installed a new vent cover.

The whole process was excellent. From the first telephone call, we knew that we were dealing with professionals which added to Angie's List recommendations, made us feel comfortable from the beginning. Appointments were scheduled, they arrived exactly on time and did a great job. The initial cleaning was $155. The followup appointment for chimney repair was efficient, exactly as quoted and a few hours later the job was done. We were advised of possible brick problems surrounding the outside of the chimney and Top Hat will keep us posted when they come for the annual cleaning.

Our vent is probably fifty feet long and they took care of the entire thing. I think that they were excellent-top notch! They were very respectful and made sure to keep things clean and explain what they were doing. They showed me what they did and gave me tips for the future. They were just great. They drove about thirty miles each way and didn't charge me travel.
