Description of Work: installed concrete channel drain across driveway to drain yard on one side of driveway and keep water out of driveway. took some back and forth on the phone before we actually got the work scheduled, but once scheduled, Jim Ellis and his crew were punctual and did a very nice job. one thing worth mentioning: in addition to the channel drain, they installed some drains on the side yard that were to drain into the channel drain. as it turned out, the installed elevation of one of the yard drains was a bit higher than the channel drain. Jim took responsibility for the glitch and recommended and I agreed that the pvc attached to the yard drain run to the closest ditch (at the street) instead of to the channel drain as originally designed, plus he contoured the yard near the channel drain so that the channel drain still drained the side yard. all considered, the modified scope of work was at least as good, if not better than the original scope/design that I had requested. the modified scope required more hours - almost two additional days, but Jim did charge me any more. All work was quality work and I am pleased. I would use Jim and crew again.

I was so pleased with him.
Description of Work: Flagstone Concrete did some work for me. He took off my front walkway and replaced it because it was cracked. Then he took off a back patio and put it back down and basically doubled it with a concrete pad.

Jim Ellis, owner of Flagstone Concrete, was very responsive and accessible from the beginning. He came out to take measurements and give us an estimate and was out with his crew almost every day. Although his price was higher than some of the other esimtates we got, we chose to go with Jim because of his experience and committment to doing top quality work. Jim arranged to get city permits and had no problems complying w/ our neighborhood organization's specifications for public and private walkways. Jim's team was extremely efficeint as they only took about 1 week to finish the entire driveway, patio, and all sidewalks/ walkways-- They covered the window and doors to protect them from dirt and debris during the demolition and removal of the old concrete (took less than 1 day to get it out). Then they spent a least a day or two meticulously preparing the ground by digging out tree roots (we have lots of large trees in our neighborhood) and leveling the ground. Jim was very considerate of the large trees near our walkways and made the concrete curve around the large roots in two places. When they completed the concrete work, they even planted new grass along the edges. Before we had the work done, we had all kinds of pooling in the back of our house and along our drivleway and sidewalks even with a little rain. After Flagstone Concrete replaced our concrete, we hardly have any issues w/ drainage or pooling of water even w/ large amounts of rain. We continue to get many compliments from our friends and neighbors on our new driveway and walkways (probably b/c we went from having the worst looking concrete on the block to what some say is now the nicest on the block). About 6-7months after the work was done, (in the midst of the hottest and driest summers in Houston's history), I noticed small crack at the edge of our driveway. I called Jim to see if there was anything he could do about it and he said that he would come out and assess the situation and do whatever was needed to fix it now and, if needed, in the future. So for now, the crack as been sealed and looks pretty good. I'm glad though, that in working with a company like Flagstone, I can always call back and get help in the future if needed.
Description of Work: Replaced entire driveway, back patio, and front sidewalks and leaderwalks.

Overall, we were very, very satisfied with the quality of the of the work, the professionalism of the contractor his crew and the subcontractor and his crew. We contracted to have the driveway job done in mid June and the walkway/flagstone in mid July to meet our schedule. The contractor and crew arrived on the agreed date at 7:30 AM to begin the driveway excavation. Work went more or less according to the contractor's estimated timeline. Driveway work was completed in the estimated two days. The contractor installed plastic sheeting and plywood work pads to prevent concrete from damaging either the existing brickwork, grass or concrete. The walkway/flagstone work started a day later than originally planned at the contractor's request. He notified me the Friday before the work was originally scheduled to begin and we agreed to the delay. The job took the 4 days he estimated and he returned on Saturday to remove forms and restore the areas along side the walkway/flagstone. Due to minor modifications to the walkways a two extra shrubs had to be removed which the contractor replanted for me without haggling over additional work. One of the replantings resulted in breaking a sprinkler line which the contractor repaired. After all the excavation and sprinkler line rerouting was completed the contractor requested that the line be tested for leaks. One minor leak was discovered and repaired. Due to the amount of concrete removal and installation near the front door of our house the contractor installed thick plastic sheeting to protect the door and existing brick. He and his flagstone subcontractor have subsequently brought potential clients by our home to show their work.
Description of Work: We contracted a two part job. The first part was to have our driveway widened to allow two cars abreast and provide space to allow either car to back out past the other car. The second part was to replace a washed pebble walkway from the street to our front door and to re-lay a flagstone walkway on mortar. The driveway job involved removing shrubs along the east side of the driveway and a tree on the west side. The widening consisted of adding an 18" wide concrete extension on the west side ( about 55 sq ft) and a triangular shaped extension on the east side (about 130 sq ft). The contractor removed and hauled away all the roots and dirt from the two excavations. The driveway additions were reinforced with rebar and tied into the existing driveway with steel dowels every 24 inches of length. The west extension was also tied into the existing driveway by cutting a section of the old driveway so that the new extension would blend into the existing driveway without having a more fragile triangular piece at the side of the driveway. The walkway job consisted of removing an old cracked washed pebble walkway (about 50 ft x 4 ft) and removing the underlying tree roots that caused the driveway to crack. During the course of the work the contractor had to relocate some sprinkler lines that would have prevented the new walkway from being the proper thickness. The replacement walk was built using steel rebar on 16 inch centers and 4 inches thickness. The surface was finished with washed pebbles similar to the walkway it replaced. As part of this job the contractor removed an existing flagstone walkway from the driveway to the front walkway excavated a new base, removed tree roots, laid a reinforced concrete base and recycled the original flagstones onto the new base and grouted the flagstones in place to provide a even surface. The contractor returned the day after the flagstone was laid by a subcontractor to remove all concrete forms and restore all areas that were disturbed during the construction work.

We checked Angie's List and found that Flagstone Concrete had received outstanding reviews from two other members who had used his services. Jim Ellis (owner of Flagstone Concrete) provided us with a very detailed bid. He explained the entire process and the time required. Jim also worked with us to keep the project within our established budget. We were concerned about clean-up after completion and Jim stated that his policy has always included a strong commitment to customer satisfaction with clean-up during and after project completion. Jim Ellis showed up on the day promised and we were duly impressed with the experience and industrious approach displayed by his employees. Preparation is extremely important prior to a concrete pour and it was apparent that Jim's crew paid attention to every detail. The day of the pour, Jim brought in extra workers and the process went smoothly because there was a strong focus on essential team work. Jim was on site to supervise the entire project and he answered any questions that we had both before and after the work was completed. Members of his crew showed up the day after completion to totally clean-up all debris and replace the narrow strips of grass along each side of the new driveway. Jim and his Flagstone Concrete employees met and exceeded our expectations. Our straight "A" rating of Jim Ellis and his Flagstone Concrete Company is a sincere expression of our appreciation for the quality and value we received in return for the substantial cost associated with our driveway replacement and repair.

Jim was very good to work with. I received multiple bids for this project, and while Jim was $500 more expensive than the second place bid, I feel comfortable it was money well spent and an exceptional value. Jim and his crew were able to start within 3 days of notification of award, and they showed up on time and went right to work. Jim payed special consideration to the drainage situation in my backyard. They spent most of the two days preparing the site for the pour, and you could tell that was time well spent because the pour went very well. Jim's crew was very pleasant and polite. I think what separates the good contractors from the fly by nights is a consistent crew. In talking to Jim's crew, you can tell they have worked together a long time. The quality of the poured patio is beautiful. Jim was working the concrete right next to his crew, and took pride in the work. The patio appears to drain how Jim planned it. They followed the design I made, and even made suggestions to improve. Great experience.
